Overall a pretty good laptop. Speed is pretty good for the price. Not a hard core gaming machine but can handle some less intense games. Processes video and photo editing nicely, could be faster but for the price I'm impressed. Handles Office products very well. Screen is a good size with nice color rendering and great resolution. Keyboard takes a little getting used to but not too bad; could also benefit from a numeric keypad but livable without. The Smart-pad also takes getting used to but once I figured it out I love it; the buttons are also part of the movement area so it can be a little jumpy until you get it down but it makes movement very intuitive. I am still getting comfortable with touch screen use but so far am happy wit the touch performance of this laptop. Very happy with my purchase so far.

I got this laptop about 3 weeks back and I love it. I was searching for a laptop for use at home mostly for recreation. I needed wide screen at the same time wanted it to be sleek and compact. This one fit the bill perfectly. It came with Windows 8 and last week I upgraded to Windows 10. The i5 processor and 6 GB RAM work well.. This is certainly bang for the buck. I would definitely recommend this for those looking for a great laptop at decent price and not very keen on having the fastest/latest config .

I love this computer, though there are some quirks

I purchased this laptop after graduating college and preparing to begin graduate school. What I cared about most was portability: that is, long battery life and relatively lightweight. On the whole I love this laptop, and all the specs are great. The only downsides are there are some weird design quirks that just make me wonder "Why did they do this?". If you're willing to put up with some "what were those designers thinking" feelings, this computer is perfect. The quirks are as follows: speakers are under the lip of the bottom half of the computer, so sound can be muffled if you're trying to play high-quality music with it sitting on your lap; no number pad even though there was definitely room for one; there ARE dedicated volume and brightness keys, just co-located with some function keys you will never use anyways; and the lid is a little stiff to open and close, though that is actually perfect for touch screen usage. The touch screen is great, and it makes using Windows 8 very intuitive. The battery life is impeccable; even when streaming HD video I can get at least 4 hours out of it, and when just doing word processing or internet surfing I can get 6-8. The screen resolution is amazing and clear. The screen is very big and perfect for probably anything you're doing, though it is bigger than my previous 15" laptop and I will have to buy a new backpack to carry it.

Purchased this laptop as an in store open box. Got a great deal on it and it really fits all my needs after I upgraded the ram to 12 GB and swapped out the stock hard drive for a PNY480 GB Solid State drive. The computer is really fast and extremely quiet after the upgrades. Upgrading to Windows 10 was a breeze and I love the improvements over windows 8.1. This is my first Dell computer and I am glad I purchased this machine over buying a newer MacBook Pro.

Previously purchase a Toshiba Satellite on a whim. Decided to return it because I just wasn't too satisfied with it. Came across this last minute during an online promo. After looking at specs and seeing reviews I went for it. Glad I did! Great price, size, weight. Loads quickly, handles numerous running at the same time without any issues, doesn't run hot and battery life isn't really anything to complain about. I was hesitant about keeping the Toshiba from day 1 (I love Best Buys return policy). This one is definitely a keeper

This laptop has everything! Problem is I, at age 74, am very "tech challenged". I'm using, probably, 10% of what can be done with this new computer. Even though, I am enjoying it and will have my grandchildren educate me on using the other 90%. Touch screen is very nice. Touch pad is very "touchy", but not an issue. Lighter than my old laptop but I miss the CD option I had with my Toshiba. If you want QUALITY, this is your laptop.

Note: Purchased as open box special in store. Amazing deal at that price. Switch from Apple largely because of price but also to partition and install Linux. Great machine, actually get good use out of the touch screen/Win 8. Only complaint is the touchpad and its clickers. A mouse solves this was enough except having to deal with everywhere but my desk.

Questionable design choices keep this good laptop from being great.
FIrst, the keyboard. There is very little key travel. The keys have nice, tactile feedback but because there is so little key travel I still find myself making typing errors. I'm a pretty heavy handed typist so your results may vary. Keylighting has 3 settings, high, low, and off, but the difference between high and low isn't that big.
Second, the touchpad. It takes some getting used to. It's a uniform clickable touch pad, a lot like the one's on Apple's offerings, but not as precise. Dell doesn't provide options through software to configure it to your liking. I'd like to turn off tap to click, but it seems I can't do that. Using the right click can be a chore.
Where this laptop shines is the screen. Its gorgeous. 1080p looks great and the colors are bright and accurate. However, the screen itself does not get very bright. You won't have a very good view when taking this thing out on a sunny day. The screen is touch, so you can maneuver around Windows 8 by touching the screen if you like.
One thing I didn't like about the screen is that has a strange protective plastic coating on it that does not seem to be removable. It's a pain to clean, and is prone to little dents and scratches.
Speakers are ok. Sound quality is good, volume is ok. Placement of the speakers are on THE BOTTOM of the laptop, riding the lower edge facing you. If you have the computer on your lap or a thick carpet, your sound will be muffled.
System performance is perfect for what I use the computer for: Documents, web browsing, media, and digital sketching. I'm able to run some of my games on lowish settings with high frame rates, like Legend of Grimrock, Super Meat Boy, and Team Fortress 2. Don't think you'll be playing new AAA titles on this thing though. Intel's graphics solutions have come a long way but cannot do the grunt work of a dedicated GPU.
I've tried installing Ubuntu Linux 15.04 but there are wireless issues. Fedora 22 beta runs great.
Overall I'm pleased, but a little disappointed in some design choices.

Perfect Laptop for my Budget

I did buy this laptop for my cousin and it fit into my budget well. But the features it offered for this price was awesome, i5 is always better than i3 in my personal opinion - so getting an i5 with 6GB Ram was an added pro for this buy. Moreover, 3 user kaspersky anti-virus as free with this - could use it for my laptop as well. :-) Satisfied

Main attraction for me was the screen, it is bright, excellent resolution, good viewing angles (IPS screen). The laptop is solid, not much flex, looks good (simple clean design). My machine came with Windows 8.1, upgrade to Windows 10 was easy and no wait. I did replace the 2GB ram with a 4GB card, so I have a total of 8GB (2x 4GB SODIMM PC1600) and I replaced the rather slow drive with a Sandisk 240GB SSD.
Plus:
1) Fantastic display
2) Nice clean build
3) Keyboard has back lights
Cons:
1) Keyboard has no num pad, has very short key travel, you need to press FN for the function keys
2) Battery can be replaced but you need to open the cover of the machine to get access
3) No DVD player/recorder
4) Wifi seems a bit slow, I get low connection speeds with my router, I need to investigate this some more.
5) No hard drive activity light, this is really bad when you have the slower 1TB drive, you really want to know if the drive is busy or not. You can install software that shows the HD LED in the task bar.
Over-all I am very happy with the machine, upgrading the drive to a SSD makes the machine really move.

I bought this laptop to replace an old HP laptop that had died. It is lighter, smaller, faster and has been a great upgrade for me. The staff person that helped me with the purchase was really great, easy to work with and listened to my needs. The Geek Squad staff were a great help with set up.

Great Laptop For The Money

This is a great laptop with very good specs for the money but it does have some minor issues, both the touchscreen and mouse are very nice and responsive but it does take some getting used to. The things that I don't like about the laptop is that the mouse became unresponsive until I called technical support and they disabled a feature on the mouse and then it started to work again, also I keep getting an error message regarding something with the screen but I don't notice a problem so I have not called on it yet. But what I am worried about is the very faint clicking or rain drop noise I keep hearing coming from the laptop, I hope I don't have a bad hard drive. If it wasn't for these issues I would have given it 5 stars.

The "Dell - Inspiron 15.6" Touch-Screen Laptop - Intel Core i5 - 6GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive - Silver" is a great laptop for home usage. It has enough performance with Intel i5 processor and 6GB RAM for home usage. It looks nice and has a Full-HD touchscreen, which looks great and is very good for multimedia viewing. Recommended highly.

After having the laptop less than a month, it began having a freezing problem where whenever I would turn on the laptop for the first time, it would immediately freeze on the Dell starting screen. Then after turning it off and back on again, it always worked then. Although it was still usable, it was too new for me to put up with a problem like this. Took it in to Geek Squad who determined the hard drive failed. Had it replaced. Geek Squad made me contact Dell myself to get them to mail me the new hard drive and recovery media for Windows, which I had to take in to Geek Squad. (I ended up making a few calls back and forth, because Dell wanted the error code and validation code from Geek Squad before they'd send me the things, and Geek Squad had to diagnose again a different way to get Dell's codes, etc... I don't see why they couldn't just communicate without using me as a middleman- but I digress; this isn't a Geek Squad review!) Since my laptop was still under warranty (which I made sure to point out), Dell provided those parts to me for free under the condition that I mail back the old/defective hard drive within 10 days (yikes!) and as long as they determine the defect is not in any way my fault (hoping that goes well).
Only other problem is that sometimes the click button decides to not work properly and will take a number of tries to click something, and also occasionally, the mouse arrow on the screen freaks out and jumps around everywhere, making it extremely difficult to use the mouse pad- similarly, sometimes when typing, the insertion point will jump to a new place and mess up my typing. At first I thought it was something I was doing, but I've been very careful with my hand movements and this has been happening without me causing it.
Otherwise am happy with the laptop. Mic and camera work well for Skype. Computer has pretty decent speed.
I suppose I recommend it. Since I don't exactly have a lot of experience with other laptops, I can't say how acceptable the above issues are. I think if I get another one in the future, I'll try out another kind.
