One of the best 2D platformers available

Retro Studios, the team that developed the Metroid Prime games as well as the more recent Donkey Kong Country Returns is back with another fantastic game. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze takes everything that made Returns great, and ups the ante. The levels are larger with incredible attention to detail, there are more characters to use alongside Donkey Kong, the music (composed by the renowned David Wise) is one of the best soundtracks you'll listen to, and the graphics have gotten a large facelift with the move from the Wii to the Wii U. Everything also controls like a dream. Thankfully now, the rolling mechanic is mapped to a button press instead of the shake of the Wii Remote like it was in DKC Returns. That was my biggest complaint with that game and it's been fixed here. With that being said, the multiplayer co-op is just not something I find very fun. This is meant to be a single player game first and foremost. Also, unfortunately it takes about 10-15 seconds to load each level which feels a bit too long for a platformer. Other than those two issues I have, the game is nearly flawless. I have played many 2D platformers over the years, but this is easily one of the best. Do yourself a favor and pick this game up, and if you don't own a Wii U, this is worth the price of admission alone.

    A Wii U must have

Though the Wii U often has to live in the shadow of the more popular Xbox One or PS4, it is home to many excellent games you can't find anywhere else. DKC Tropical Freeze is one of those games. If your fan of 2D platforming games or the DKC games this is a must own. Tropical Freeze controls very well, looks great, and has an excellent soundtrack as well. Like every other DKC title it can be pretty challenging, but still easily worth the purchase. It's not only one of the best Wii U games, it's one of the best games of this console generation.

I was blown away by this Donky Kong Tropical Freeze. The level design and the glorious music keep you glued to the screen. Though it may be a challenging game like most of the DK series, I enjoyed it very much.

Haven't really played this game on single player the wife and I play it together. However I will say that playing with two people can be hard as in order to gather certain items the second player needs to make sure they pick the write character or they have to drop out and select the right one for the next level. The game does a good job of introducing you to the controls and the different second character abilities. The boss fights can be a bit on the ridiculous side and it is not uncommon to have to replay a boss battle a few times to get timing right (that is what platformers do).

I have not played a Donkey Kong game since the Nintendo 64, but this was a great game to bring me back into the franchise. I love the different sidekicks you can play with and the different abilities each of them brings. Some of the levels can be frustratingly hard if you are trying to collect all of the puzzle and KONG pieces, but all in all, this is a really fun game.

The level design on this platformer is some of the best I have ever experienced. That being said, I find that the controls are somewhat clumsy and are nuanced so that they make the game more difficult. I didn't like this approach in Resident Evil of old and I still don't care for it today. Otherwise, the game is beautiful, dynamic, and anything but boring--you will die, and you will die often. Loading times tend to run 30-45 secs on my Wii U.

I just started playing this and I am blown away by how fun it is and the graphics. It's not a hard game if you just want to run through the levels without collecting every little thing. But finding some of the puzzle pieces can be pretty tricky. One of the best Wii U games, hands down.

This game has been greatly anticipated by the WiiU community for several months now and the end result does not disappoint. Let's get the best out of the way first. The soundtrack is stupendous and does not miss a single beat throughout the whole game. The graphics are beautiful as well as charming, and the platforming is old school Donkey Kong at its finest. Game length is good too as I ran straight through it in about 14 hours with trying to a lot of bonuses or collectables. The only potential drawback the game might suffer for is later on, some of the levels can get down right ridiculously hard. Other than that, its a great 9/10 experience.

This may seem like any normal Nintendo game, but this game gets complicated. If you enjoy challenges, pick this game up, because you may get frustrated several times here and there. Grab a friend and play co-op, or go at it solo, but beware, it's definitely harder than it looks!

I loved the classic Donkey Kong Country games on the SNES and more than 100% Donkey Kong Country Returns. Tropical Freeze just improves on it all. Longer levels, more collectables, beautiful graphics, and the return of the Funky Kong Shop.

We got this game for our 8 and 11 year old daughter and son, and they had a very good time playing it. The graphics are excellent and the game is very entertaining... The little one, though, got a little frustrated as she advanced, as it becomes quite difficult, so I wouldn't recommend it for kids who get easily frustrated with challenging games.

I grew up playing the original Donkey Kong Country on the SNES so I was looking forward to the current gen version of a classic. THE GOOD: - nice graphics - nice fluid gameplay - awesome soundtrack - hours of replayability THE BAD: - VERY VERY DIFFICULT - not able to play on both screens (only controller or TV) Got this game to play with my 7-yr old daughter but it's just too difficult for her. Other than that it's an excellent game.

This is a great game. It carries on the donkey kong traditions but man is this game hard. But if you don't mind a good challenge there is a lot of game here for your money.
