This game is ridiculously fun and super easy. The graphics look amazing on the tv or even hand held. No lag what so ever and the music is very nice. Easy to get lost in the game for hours. Super fun game for all ages. Side quests are fun, and battling dragons. Much better than Minecraft. Can't wait for the second one to come out. Highly recommend this game.

My wife and I stream video games on Twitch and we had asked our chat to recommend a game that we would enjoy. They mentioned Dragon Quest Builders on the Nintendo Switch.
After downloading the free demo off the Nintendo eShop (which I highly recommend you do), we both instantly fell in love with the game and immediately purchased the full version.
NOTE: Your progress in the demo does NOT carry over to the full game, so if you are playing that and enjoying it, your best bet is to then hold off until you get the full game so you aren't replaying too much of the story.
You play as the Builder in what I would say is a cross between Minecraft (for the building) and an RPG set in the Dragon Quest universe. You'll face off against many recognizable enemies from the mainline series, including the Slime!
The game is broken up into four distinct chapters. You cannot carry over your progress from chapter to chapter BUT you can return to your previous chapter town if you want to build more (or go after the hidden challenges). At first I didn't like this feature but then you get used to it.
Look at it this way, even though you build up your first town in Chapter 1 and gain all of this experience in what you can craft that won't carry over into Chapter 2, you are instead given another clean slate that you can design from the ground up in a completely different way than you did your previous town.
There is also a mode unlocked after completing Chapter 1 called Terra Incognita which is an entire world you can craft without having to go from Chapter to Chapter. It's more of a free open-world mode without the story to drive you forward. The more main chapters you complete, the more you can unlock in Terra Incognita to play. Your mileage with this mode will vary...we both haven't played much of it as we both have been enjoying progressing through the story since that gives you more of a purpose.
All in all, I would highly recommend Dragon Quest Builders! If you never played any of the Dragon Quest games before, that will not affect your enjoyment of this one. And with Dragon Quest Builders 2 right around the corner (which, if you have save data from Dragon Quest Builders, you'll unlock a few cool goodies in the new game) it's the perfect time to jump in and start building! :)

Overall fun game. Not the greatest port from PS4, but still looks good and I love the portability of the switch. It sucks that Best buy got rid of their gamer club. It made buying games from them so much better.
I love the game play and the story of rebuilding a world destroyed by the possible bad ending to a rpg. You will go through hours of gameplay and not notice the time.
It's like mine craft just without the multiplayer element. With rpg story thrown in. Has all the familiar characters from dragon quest...well the NPCs.
Enjoy!

This game kept getting great reviews, and I finally I ran out of games to play so I figured I’d try it out. This game is not Minecraft, there is a clear goal and really you only have to build what is required. But... they suck you into having fun while building. They give you designs to build and you’re like, I could make it better than that. And before you know it you’re making your defenses better than the minimum. Finding the side quests and unlocking new armor and weapons. Bigger and badder enemies with bigger and badder rewards. And it is impressive just how much you can manipulate the world. With a great story that sets you up right at the beginning as NOT being the hero. An idea that intrigued me. Highly recommended!

In the past I would buy and play Minecraft, but quickly loose interest because there was never any point or end goal, and I had to find all my own recipes. The creatures were also boring.
In this game, you are given a story, a goal, recipes, new locations to travel to, things to fight. How very exciting! And that drive to build that I got from Minecraft remains because you are always wanting to improving your Base. Of course, during boss battles, they sometimes knock holes in your defenses, so that gives you an opportunity to think of a better strategy for next time.
There is always a goal to keep you busy. You will sink hours and hours into this game.

Like Minecraft, but with direction

At first glance, it's pretty easy to dismiss Dragon Quest Builders as a Minecraft clone, and in some ways you'd be right. What sets it apart from Minecraft, though, is the sense of direction the game gives you. As you rebuild your town(s), the people who live there give you quests for how they want the town to grow, asking you to build different structures, collect different resources or fight monsters that sometimes attack your town. Instead of just being plopped in the middle of wilderness and leaving you to your own devices, it feels more like a traditional game, with goals and progress.
The game is made up of multiple chapters/lands - once you complete a land by rebuilding a city, you can move on to the next land and rebuild the next city. Its worth noting that each land is essentially separate - you can't travel back and forth between them, and you can't bring materials with you to the next area. Its a bit hard to move on to the next land because you're definitely going to be wishing you could bring some of the cool gear you've found/built with you, but as a game mechanic, it works well enough.
Probably my biggest gripe with the game is the size of the cities - they're rather tiny. You can build anywhere in the world, but the area that your villagers will live in (and recognize what you've built for them) is a fairly small square (you can tell the edges because it's brighter inside the town itself.) There's probably technical reasons for it, but it leads to everything being crammed into a tiny area, preventing you from building the amazing town I'm sure you want to create.
It also exacerbates the second issue the game has, which is that the camera doesn't work very well in enclosed spaces. Its fine out in the open, but when you get into small spaces, its hard to figure out what you're looking at/interacting with. Just about the only time this is a problem is in town, since you have to build it like a rabbit warren to fit it inside the small city borders.
Still, it's a fun game. If you like the idea of Minecraft but have a hard time getting into it because of the lack of direction, this is pretty much the perfect game for you.

I had already played and beaten the game on the ps4, but the wife wanted this version so she could get the Saber cat cub and so we both could get the extra stuff for when the second game comes out. Everything still runs great, the music is still peaceful and relaxing and the game play is still smooth and no hiccups. If you have a kid that loves minecraft this is a perfect story driven block building game with some Sim elements to making residents happy and monster beating!

I loved the sims growing up so I gave it a chance. Oh man was he right! This game was soooo addicting. I spent countless hours building my castle. Buy this game. It is MADE for the swtich

This is my second time purchasing this game, the first being for the PS4 when it first launched. Very enjoyable in either short or long bursts, especially now that it is portable. The visual charm of Dragon Quest and more structured story/quest/mission style makes this is a superior minecraft-esque game, especially for those already attached to the series.

If you like either Dragon Quest or Minecraft this might be your thing. It has role playing game elements along with building elements combined. This game has better graphics than Minecraft. And it will take a good while to complete. It is also very addicting to play. It is so fun building your town and then defending it from the monsters.

I've always liked building games but I could never play more than a few minutes of minecraft. It was lacking a story, and this is exactly what Dragon Quest Builders does. Takes the mechanics of a building game and adds a story. If you're on the fence I recommend trying the demo. I finished the demo and bought this game right after it.

I'm not a huge fan of Minecraft but I found this game to be quite enjoyable due to the story and RPG elements. I usually need a hook like that to get into sandbox style games. The game's story is also very fun and interesting if you are a fan of the Dragon Quest series. A nice look at an alternate timeline. So I recommend this if you are interested in getting into building games like Minecraft but need a little direction and/or guidance to get you started.

Great Dragon Quest story, coupled with Minecraft gameplay. I had a hard time getting into the latter personally just due to lack of direction, always prefer games with an engrossing story, this game delivers that and gave me a deeper appreciation for Minecraft as well.

I have always liked the dragon warrior/quest games since the original NES so I had to give this a chance. A lot of people try to compare this to mine craft but about the only thing that it shares in common with that is the mining and building part. I say this because in this game you actually have a story to follow and quests to fulfill but there is also a Freeplay mode where you can explore and build to your hearts content just like in mine craft. So even if you like mine craft but don't know much about dragon quest I think that you'd still enjoy this game and if you like dragon quest but don't care for mine craft I'd still say that you should give it a try. Now if you like both games but always wanted a little more from mine craft this is definitely the game for you.
