Sony Studios make some great games! They always look good, have a great story, and are fun. Sony has set a high bar for single-player games. Can't beat the Playstation Hits price as well. Games like this are a Steal for $19.99 or under. I put in a lot of hours on this game and do not regret it at all. This was one of the better RPGs I have played in a while.

Fans of the series from its PS2 and PS3 days will not be disappointed. One of the best games of this console generation. The story is engaging and the combat is so fluid and visceral. Moving to an open-ish world was a fine choice, and there are always little secrets and side quests you can go off to do, when you need a bit more currency, exp or crafting materials. Oh yeah, this game has crafting! I could go on and on, but just do yourself a favor, and grab this. You will not be disappointed. BOY!

Well that was unexpected! After playing through the original trilogy and spin off PSP titles God of War had entertained but also wore out its welcome as gaming matured. God of War was always a graphical showcase with an entertaining plot and gameplay but the formula had undoubtedly aged past its prominence. When the new game was announced myself, like many, was left shocked. I was surprised not only by the return of a long dormant franchise but by the tone of the initial reveal. It showed something the previous games didn’t even hint at, heart. While impressed by the trailer I certainly intended to eventually play but it was low on my list of expectations. When the review embargo was lifted and seeing all of the glowing reviews I had to see if it was deserving. Turns out this is not merely the best God of War games but one of the best this generation has yet offered. Besides again setting a new bar for visuals, the game has a dynamic combat system that opens up as the game progresses. The story is a well told story if a bit derivative. The plot makes good use of many well-worn fantasy tropes and is by no means groundbreaking but what sets it apart is the characterization of the various protagonists. Kratos finally gets a small bit of depth but is overshadowed by Atreus and their dwarven compatriots along with other characters met along the journey are each lovingly crafted and acted. The structure of the game is much more open and resembles modern action RPGs more than its predecessors. The upgrade system and skill trees can come across as cumbersome and daunting but can be left alone for most of the game. Those who wish to dive into the gameplay systems will have much to customize in terms of loot and skills and play styles similar to that of the Soul’s series of games, barring the notorious difficulty of the aforementioned games. This is a rewarding and surprising title through and through. I recommend this to anyone whether familiar with the franchise or not.

I've played and enjoyed all of the God of War games and this one is by far the most enjoyable. You get all the same great action, but with a great story and beautiful visuals. Combat isn't as simple as the previous entries, but controls are logical. Battles can be very difficult even on the easier difficulty settings.

    Must have for PS4 owners...

...and absolutely <<must have right now>> if you have a PS4 Pro. Absolutely gorgeous game on a 4k display, and to top it off, one of the best modern re-imaginings of an old franchise ever created. If you are a diehard fan of the arcade-y hack&slash, frenetic combo driven gameplay of the prior GoW and DmC games, you will absolutely be disappointed, no question. But if your tastes have changed towards story driven fantasy RPG's with incredibly fluid, dynamic combat, this is a game for you. I'll go right out and say I never really liked the original GoW games. Played 1&3, never replayed them. Just not my style of game. This is a much more thoughtful, slowly paced experience with a lot going on in the story department, and much more skill, item and stat management in the combat. You can easily get through just picking up gear as it comes, or you can hyper min-max to fit your play style. Combat is very similar to Dark Souls, but at a much faster pace, and with far less weapon options, but infinitely more combat skills and movement variety. The game world is breathtakingly gorgeous and varied. It's not as grand and epic in size as some other open world RPG's, but the focus allows it's two main characters and landscapes to be fleshed out beautifully. Never did I think I'd say Kratos, the epitome of revenge and unbridled rage, is a complex and brooding protagonist. Atreus is exactly as you would hope he would be. This is not an endless escort mission as many worried, this is a powerful journey where two inseparable companions grow their bond to become more than the sum of their selves. All of the side characters all well voiced and interesting in their own right as well, and their interactions range from emotionally moving to downright hilarious. It's just a great gd game. Go get it. My only complaint is that eventually it ends. This is one of those games that forces you to lower your expectations when moving on to another game.

This game is really good. The campaign is long, it feels like you play minutes even though it’s actually hours. It WILL keep you entertained and satisfied. My favorite game difficulty is second to god mode. It’s truely challenging and fun. Unless you are extremely skilled, do not choose god mode. It will end you in mere seconds. Other than than, the game itself has good controls, story, graphics, fighting, dialogue, cutscenes. I am truely glad I bought this.

A More Mature God Of War

It's been about 8 years since a mainline God Of War game (God Of War 3 on PS3, 2010), and it appears the hiatus has done the series some good. With this latest entry, entitled simply "God Of War", the story takes a step in a more mature direction–showing Kratos in a fatherly role, regretting his violent past and the repercussions it entailed. With the Greek gods vanquished, Kratos now reluctantly sets his sights upon the pantheon of Norse mythology. The perspective has shifted into an over-the-shoulder view, which makes for slower, albeit more visceral combat. For a good portion of the game, you'll be using a frost axe instead of Kratos' signature Chains Of Olympus. Throughout your journey, you'll be accompanied by Kratos' son, Atreus...but he's much more of a boon than a hinderance; rarely will he need to be babysat. Instead, he has no life bar and acts mostly to assist in stunning enemies with his bow attacks (although he will quickly become more lethal). Your weapons AND armor can be upgraded as well, which is a new feature to the God Of War franchise. In fact, your armor and attachments greatly influence your stats; different builds may be needed to take on the more difficult foes. The graphics are quite nice on either the standard or pro PS4, though only the latter is capable of 4k and a consistent clip of 60 fps. Still, it's totally playable on the standard PS4 at a respectable 30 fps. If there's one gripe I have, it's that you really don't feel like much is accomplished story-wise by the end of the game–it's clearly a setup for a new trilogy. That said, I'd welcome a couple more entries into the God Of War series using this new perspective and gameplay style. Definitely recommended for action aficionados!

The god of war story continues! The story is so deep and good and the single player campaign is perfect. Love the open world mechanics that you can do for hours. I highly recommend this game if you played the first games. You wont regret it. The music is good and the graphics practically look real.

Omg if you're a God Of War fan then this is most definitely the game for you. Not going to lie I have only played about 2 hours of gameplay but I have been playing the game longer than that I just keep dying. I have the game set on the next hardest difficulty level and boy it is intense. Graphics are phenomenal on basic PS4 so I can only imagine how GOW looks on PS4 Pro. Game controls feel smooth and fluid and story/plot seems to be great thus far.

I've played the entire series of God of War games. Santa Monica Studios have outdone themselves. This game is immersive, beautiful graphics, excellent voice acting, epic boss battles, a Father and Son story, and so much more. The controls are tight and responsive. I'm playing at standard difficulty and it is still quite challenging at times, but not frustratingly so. If you own a PS4 or especially a PS4 Pro with a 4k TV you must play this game!

I was skeptical when this game was announced but I have been proven wrong. This game is so amazing. The gameplay and combat is so fluid, the story is so good at sucking you in and staying great throughout, and there are no loading scenes in the whole time (it was all done in a one shot). Can not say enough good things about the game, they also did really well at the open world concept where there isnt so much content it is overwhelming

Excellent game. GOW is a beautifully made game that has just about everything — great story line, intuitive controls, power-ups and leveling are very good, lore and treasure are well thought out, characters and dialog are best in class, lots of hidden gems, fun and immersive game play. This is one of the nicest looking ps4 games with hours of game play. GOW has my vote for game of the year. Lives up to the hype —It’s a must buy.

For fans of the GoW series, there is much to love as we see Kratos transform from a rage filled deity to a troubled and secretive father. Those who know his past are treated to incredible character development as the Ghost of Sparta tries to be a good father to his young boy. Those who are new to the series get to learn about Kratos and his past through his sons eyes, the truth hidden from them. Beyond this, the new gameplay reflects the more tempered life that Kratos has built for himself. Gone are the days of frantic button mashing, for now players are expected to master precise combat which demands the right tool for the job. The combat feels more akin to Dark Souls rather than Devil May Cry, for those familiar. However, the game does an excellent job introducing new concepts slowly and is fairly forgiving on lower difficulties. For those seeking a challenge, you will be easily satisfied with the challenges God of War throws at you. All in all, this game has quickly become my favorite game I have ever played. When playing it, you can tell that it was made as a labor of love, that the story it tells was meant for someone special, and that the creators poured their hearts and souls into their work to tell this story. Other games I have recently enjoyed include Horizon: Zero Dawn, Zelda BotW, Mario Odyssey, The Last of Us, and the Dark Souls series. I can not recommend this game enough; it has become the new standard to which I hold action adventure games to. Well done Santa Monica Studios, all the praise is well deserved.

God of War is amazing. The graphics are insane, especially if you are playing this on a PS4 Pro. The story is one that should be in a movie. If you played God of War 1-3 you will be in for a surprise because it is not the same button layout. This is definitely an open world game. I love it. I haven't beat the full story yet because I am also doing some side missions as well. You will not want the story to end, BOY!

I’ve loved GOW since the PS2, and own every game that has come out. The only issue I’ve had is they started to get repetitive. I love the more adventure style of gameplay of this one. This is also a very beautiful looking game. Controls are tight, and story is epic. Can’t beat BB’s great sale price as well. Don’t miss out on this one, it is superb.

This game is the perfect combination of action, story and graphics. I played on the 3rd hardest difficulty setting (give me a challenge) and found progress fair but challenging. The story from start to end is fantastic, and can not wait to play the eventual sequel(s). I only have the original PS4, and the graphics blew me away. Can only imagine what it looks like on a PS4 PRO with 4K TV.

This is a front runner for Game of the Year. Red Dead 2 might give it a run for its money. Pros: Story story story, Learning Norse Lore, Graphics, some what open world, 20 hour story gameplay. 40-60 hours with everything else, no load times during gameplay (secretly hidden in cut scenes) Cons: If I was to give it any cons, it would be lack of Boss fights. Im not counting Soul Eaters and Ancients

This game represents the next evolution for Kratos with a whole new setting, weapons and powers compared to the previous games. The story is well-written and the action ramps up over the course of the game. The addition of his son introduces an interesting and emotional dynamic to the game play. The graphics look stunning, probably one of the best looking games on the PS4 to date.

One of the most striking aspects of God of War is its narrative depth. The story revolves around Kratos and his son, Atreus, embarking on a perilous journey through the realms of Norse mythology. The character development is exceptional, revealing layers of Kratos that extend beyond his rage-filled persona from previous games. The bond between father and son is central to the plot, adding a layer of emotional complexity rarely seen in action games. The game's visual prowess is nothing short of breathtaking. The detailed environments, character models, and mythical creatures showcase the power of the PlayStation 4 hardware. Seamless transitions between cutscenes and gameplay contribute to an immersive experience, making the player feel like a participant in an epic saga. Combat in God of War is a highlight, combining brutal, satisfying melee action with strategic depth. Kratos wields the Leviathan Axe, a versatile weapon that can be thrown and recalled, adding a unique dynamic to battles. The addition of Atreus as a companion introduces a layer of tactical complexity, as he aids Kratos with ranged attacks and assists in puzzle-solving. The game's level design is exceptional, featuring a semi-open world that encourages exploration. Players encounter a variety of challenging enemies and puzzles, keeping the gameplay engaging and rewarding. The integration of Norse mythology is seamless, offering a fresh perspective on legendary creatures and gods. Musically, God of War is elevated by a powerful and evocative score composed by Bear McCreary, perfectly complementing the game's emotional beats and epic moments. In summary, God of War for the PlayStation 4 stands as a masterpiece of modern gaming. With its gripping narrative, stunning visuals, satisfying combat, and emotional depth, it not only revitalizes a beloved franchise but also sets a new standard for the action-adventure genre. Whether you're a long-time fan or a newcomer to the series, God of War is an essential experience for any gamer.
