Played through God of War until story finished on PS4 slim. I played the 3 previous main games on their original systems (God of War - PS2, God of War II - PS2, God of War III - PS3), but none of the side games.
Kratos returns in a game that is actually more "mature" than the previous games, and the core of the game is that struggle, the dramatic irony that the audience and Kratos himself are the only ones who know who he truly is, or was, or maybe still is, and how his somewhat estranged son will effect him?
That and an absolutely stunning game with equally beautiful and violent depiction of Norse mythology and locations, and that has effected the combat as well. Kratos has lost his jump but gained a magic axe, but otherwise feels like God of War added a little Dark Souls. Blocking, parrying and dodging return and the combat is just as visceral, including brutal finishers. The view has shifted to behind Kratos, but this actually allows for a closer and more brutal experience. His son, Atreus, is never a nuisance in combat, and aides through damage, status effects and control, allowing focus on Kratos to rip and cleave the denizens of Midgard apart.
An excellent modernization of a modern franchise, excellent in gameplay, smooth and detailed visuals, fantastic setting, and moving story.

This God of War is the best to date - by far. By best I mean, all elements of a complete video game are there. The battle system has greatly progressed from the fun, yet child-like simplicity of older versions. The equipment and skills leveling is simple enough for the hack-and-slash fans, yet deep enough for an RPG fan like me to get into. The pace and aggressiveness of the enemies may still force you to revert to hack-and-slashing, and you may not need all the complexity, but it's so much more satisfying to use all the tools and skill you've earned if you can master them. The story and accompanying script are much more memorable than previous versions, and that's an understatement - it is quite the cinematic play-through, while not boring you with sequences that feel too long (as other games can do). Finally, the graphics - wow. This was always a highlight of the GOW games, but this is as good as it gets by AAA game standards. From the character animation to the environmental details and the incredible lighting, just beautiful. Overall, the game defies genre norms, churns out the gameplay fun, keeps you interested in the story and gives you incredible eye candy. Is it the best RPG I've ever played? No. Is it the best action game I've ever played? Probably not. Is it one of the best hack-and-slash RPG hybrids I've ever played? Yes.

I put this game off for a while and really regret that. I'm a fan of the GoW series and thus is hands down the best and biggest adventure for Kratos I've ever played. Everything about the game just drips quality, from the story to the gameplay. It's tough, but well worth the hours you'll put into it. Simply put, buy this game.

Ive also played and finished all the God of War of games and loved every minute of them. When I saw the new one with a slightly aged Kratos I was very interested...so much so I ordered a PS4 Pro just to play it.
I set everything up tonight and popped the disc in. I have to say the opening scene alone was incredible! The visuals are jaw dropping and the audio in my theater room is some of the best Ive heard in a while. This was all excellent but I still didn't get to try this new game style something that was totally different than previous iterations of the game.
I dont want to ruin anything but I played until I met someone willing to upgrade my Leviathan Axe. All I could think about the entire time I played was how amazing this experience has been. The way the snow pushes out of the way when you or Atreus walks through it is mind blowing. The combat system so far has been very cool a welcome addition to the franchise in my opinion. Fast paced, but not as hectic hack and slash as previous games...It just feels more controlled and I love throwing the Axe! The story is very cool so far and Kratos has this maturity to him that's just awesome (don't worry hes still a beast!). Overall Id say purchasing a PS4 for this game alone was well worth it!!

This game is a game where everyone involved put their full creativity into it. This is a game every competitive gamer should experience. The bots are amazing and well coordinated to keep you challenged every minute of the game. It is non stop action and countless boss fights. What I love the most about this game is that it is challenging for even the most experienced gamer even on the easiest difficulty you will encounter a boss that will make it worth your bucks. I am currently playing this game on the hardest difficulty and currently seeing my buddies struggle with even the easiest difficulty. I am usually the gamer who passes single player games in 2-3 days. However, this game playing in the hardest difficulty, not rushing because it is such a great game, as well playing all the side missions can say this game is EPIC. Hours and HOURS of fun. Even in 1080p the game looks amazing. I have found absolutely no glitches while playing this game which is a plus in todays gaming standards. Combat system is one of the best out there. The story is actually quite intriguing but I will leave you guys to find out! I would buy this game twice just to support santa monica studios...

I've been gaming since the 80s. This rendition of God of War is one of the best games I've ever played. My husband and I were going to share a copy but it is so good that I had to buy a second one so we could play at the same time. The game is flawless, beautifully written, looks fantastic on the PS4 Pro, and extremely addictive. There are several game saves unlike the recent Farcry 5. Although, I find myself not needing to go back and play earlier saves because the game does a great job of going back to where you need to go if you die. I love the fact that there are puzzles that make you think and you aren't just running and gunning constantly. Or in the case of Kratos, running and chopping everyone with his ax. I'm also a huge Stargate SG-1 fan so have enjoyed hearing Christopher Judge's unmistakable voice as Kratos. It continues to surprise me at every turn and it is not repetitive at all. I highly recommend God of War for any gamer who appreciates an excellent story with RPG/open world elements that makes you think about how to kill bosses and complete puzzles. As reviewers have mentioned, you can't just button mash and expect to win.

This game is beatiful graphics wise and the storytelling is top notch. I've always been a god of war fan but this game is a complete overhaul of the series. The old ones were petty cool but Kratos didn't really have any depth and the combat was pure hack n slash. This new entry portrays Kratos with a lot more depth and emotion and the combat is even better and harder, because it's not just button mashing. At first I wasn't sure if I would like this one because it's so different then the others in the series but I gave it a chance and it really blew me away. The relationship between Kratos and his son is well done and you start feeling for both of them. You explore a semi open world and you can revisit areas later on. You don't really need to play the previous ones to enjoy this one but it kind of gives it a foundation. It's emotional like the last of us but it's a completely different game, not merely a clone. I honestly can't put it down because I just want to see what comes next in terms of story and locales. Would highly recommend as a fan or a newcomer. If you want to feel really powerful like a beast just try this game out.

This is one of the best told stories in a video game that I’ve ever experienced. If you haven’t played the originals don’t worry too much since you’re not missing out but if you have there’s a lot of differences. The combat with the axe is excellent and the open world style is a welcome change from the originals.

The graphics and story are fantastic! We purchased this as a Christmas gift for our son, and we have all taken turns playing because of how enticing this game is.

What else can I say that already hasn’t been said? Great game that can be as challenging as you want it to be. I suggest playing on Easy to enjoy the story. Then play again on each higher level to see just how each step up in difficulty poses new challenges. This game delivers on all the hype leading up to its release!

This game is awesome. You have an axe you can recall at any time. The story is great and the action is intense as all God of War titles. Kratos has a son called Atreus which helps you in battle and solve puzzles. Some puzzles are a little hard but internet sources help out. I recommend this game fully. 10/10

God of War finally returns in this long awaited sequel. Story is better the previous title as Kratos takes on a new role as a father to his son Atraus. The action is the best its ever been with various challenges. and it is a visual delight. A long journey more than worth a gamer's time.

Really I dont want to spoil anything for anyone by talking about the story much besides its awesome, This game is a must own for anyone with a PS4, especially if you have a Pro and an HDR TV, if you don't, this game in of itself might be reason enough to take the plunge. The scenery and graphics are gorgeous, the acting by Christopher Judge is superb (As is the actor who plays his son, the two of them have EXCELLENT chemistry together). Definitely play it in 4k mode.
Gameplay its God of War with a fresh twist, its gone more open world and RPG, the game is just as enjoyable taking in the gorgeous scenery as it is when you get into the very superb and challenging combat. The game has grown up significantly and is no longer JUST the over the top violent boss fights of the original games. That said, not for the kiddies, Not at all. Likewise, Kratos as a character has grown significantly from the last time we saw him, but thats all I will say.
This is my game of the year so far.

I was a little hesitant when the newest God of War was announced a couple of years ago. I enjoyed the series but between God of War III and God of War Ascension, I felt the games had become stale.
God of War (2018) proves that a classic can be reinvented and deliver!
I won't spoil the game with plots points but I will say that the Nordic mythology backdrop is breathtaking! I played this on my PS4 Pro and I was constantly in awe of my surroundings. As I progressed, I was anxious about what was in store for me with the story that I was fully into.
Do you need to have played the previous games to fully enjoy this God of War? No, but if you have played the previous games then there's a fuller understanding of the head nods/easter eggs.
There's a lot to do in the game with side missions and collectibles which brought my initial playthrough around 40 hours.
If you like good looking games, solid combat mechanics, and pure fun then this God of War is meant for you.

What else can be said? This game is an absolute masterpiece and represents the best of the craft. Incredible storytelling, addictive and satisfying gameplay, an immersive open world. God of War is a game that just doesn't check all the boxes, it delivers on them in full force.

Santa Monica/Sony had a difficult job of taking an established, fan loved franchise, updating it to make people want to continue playing, while not alienating the core fan base. Well, with GOW, they not only did that, they exceeded all expectations. This game is amazing. They took the series in an all new direction, while keeping the core things people love about the series intact.
As for the game itself, without giving anything away: graphically it's beautiful, one of the best looking games right now. Gameplay mechanics are top notch, and will keep you engaged/wanting to play more. Story/plot are a great continuation of the GOW series.
I highly recommend this game. If you like the GOW series, you'll enjoy this game a lot. If you a ps4 owner and just want to play the best games the system offers, you'll enjoy this game a lot. If you've wanted for a game to get you into the new gen of systems, this is it & you'll enjoy this game a lot.
A must-have if you like big meaty single-play game

This game is quite interesting. It looks like it plays radically different, yet alot of the things you do in previous God of War games, they do transfer into this game. So it is new, but if you have experience in previous games, you can also see where they implemented the same concepts. But on top of that, there is this big, meaty game. The best comparison I can give is that it feels well-paced like Resident Evil 4. It has open hub areas, but that isn't the same as your average "open world" game. So, its both open and linear at the same time. Now, I am not the type of person that replays a game multiple times, my goal is to do everything I can possibly do in one playthrough, but it feels like it may be worth playing through if you excel at learning the combat.
On top of that, it looks great, it present a great story. If you want to find a single-player game that is worth owning, this is among the best for the PS4.

I was thoroughly done with the God of War as a franchise, and then they went and deviated from the tiresome formula and made this masterpiece. Rich in story, awesome combat, and satisfying open world make this the best experience on PS4.
