This can be a little bit of a double edged sword though. If you have a schedule that changes constantly, it may not be able to properly learn your schedule.

After about a year of use it started falling all over the place and disconnecting from the Wi-Fi and going blank screen. We'd notice that air would be off for hours and the notice that the nest was just black screen. Not good.

Posted .Hi Rvfarmstead, thanks for taking the time to share your experience with the Nest Learning Thermostat and it’s unfortunate to learn that it didn’t work for long. We understand how inconvenient it could have been for you when your system was off for few hours.
If your Nest thermostat isn't receiving enough power from your system wires and a common (C) wire is not connected to the thermostat, it will slowly start draining the battery which may result in an unexpected shutdown or disconnecting itself from your Wi-Fi network to preserve power. It may also be related to Wi-Fi connectivity issues where the battery drains due to the network usage of the device.
You may try to completely disconnect your Nest thermostat from the Wi-Fi network and try to use it manually for at least 24 hours. If the issue is resolved while it is disconnected, the battery drain could be caused by your Wi-Fi network. If the issue continues to occur, then the system wires are probably not delivering enough power, and your Nest Learning Thermostat may need a common (C) wire to get adequate power to stay charged up.

However, in this case, it recharges it's battery by tapping into your AC's circuitry. As a result, the day after I installed the nest, I had a burning smell coming from my AC system. It turns out my heating system was somehow getting switched on even though the AC would be off. In other words, with the system off and no air circulating, the heating circuitry was on. The repair bill was $250. At first, I thought maybe the Nest was not the culprit. However, a day after the heating relays, wiring and elements were replaced, the burning smell came back. I removed the nest thermostat and reinstalled my old thermostat and have not had any issues since. It's too bad, because I really liked the thermostat with it's wireless smart technology and functions. I will look into the ecobee next which comes with a power extender kit for those systems without a C wire.

Oh and it's a great product too!

It could not detect my home network after working flawlessly for a few months. I also reset my network, thinking that would help. Unfortunately, It did not fix the issue.
