I thought this would be a good addition to my home but I was wrong. The install was pretty straight forward everything was working and I was glad to see it working. After a few hours i saw it went offline then i started diagnosis only to find out 1 out of 3 people will have this issue that requires extensive work to fix. There is no easy fix everything will require rewiring the device to work.

Wi-Fi issues and no warranty

I purchased two nest learning thermostats 3rd generation more than 2 years ago. They were great and working fine until they weren't. All of a sudden they're disconnected from the network and failed to find the Wi-Fi network. I have several other gadgets connected to my Google WiFi mesh network, most of them Google products and they are all working fine. I did everything it's suggested on the support page but they are no longer connected to my network and controlled via home or nest app. There are hundreds of the same complaints on the Google forums. Somehow, as soon as the warranty is expired, devices go bad. I don't want to make any accusations but it's fishy that so many products have the same issue all around the same time. I'll just continue using them offline as I'm not going to spend another $400. I'm obviously very disappointed and recommend thinking twice before making a commitment. Keep in mind that you'll be very likely experience the same problems and you'll not be happy then.

The learning system in this thermostst is atrocious and even though it says it lets you “disable” it it does not actually disable it. My first thermostat decided to keep my house heated to 79 degrees, with no consent from me in the app or settings. The second one has decided to set my house to cool to 55 degrees at 4 am every night. These temperatures arent just uncomfortable, theyre bordering danger. Additionally, the wifi app controls work less than 10% of the time. Truly an awful product, i could not be more disappointed. Buy literally anything else, even a 20 dollar themostat.

Poor reliability

I had an Ecobee thermostat and it had the occasional cloud issue where it would either log you out of cloud randomly or you'd be told it could not connect due to back-end issues but the Nest worked for all about two weeks and since then it will not detect ANY WiFi networks, which is leading me to believe it's defective. I tried resetting just the settings and then resetting the entire thermostat but when you go to setup the WiFi it doesn't find a single WiFi network which is unusual in an apartment -- especially considering if I go to WiFi on my laptops, it finds over 2 dozen networks almost instantly. Outside of that, devices like the Logitech Harmony remote that are supposed to be able to control it constantly throw error messages that they can't connect so you end of using your phone for the most part. For all of the trouble I would go back to an Ecobee if the Nest wasn't what was pre-installed by the apartment for energy saving credits. Plus Google was late to the game on using room sensors to make sure rooms were heating and cooling to your preference based on occupancy, which Ecobee had from the beginning and it's also HomeKit compatible so you can control it along with all of your other home automation devices from a single Home app that's already pre-installed on your iPhone (not to mention the setup process is as easy as scanning a barcode and going -- trying to enter the name and password for a WiFi network by rotating a circle around is painful, especially when you consider you have to switch keyboards for upper and lowercase and symbols).

Not sure how this gets such high reviews I have had 2 of them and nothing but issues search for "nest thermostat jumping to 90 for no reason" or "Nest thermostat w5 code" and read all the people having issues. any time I am asked about nest I tell people to stay away.
When this fails it costs you a lot of money or leaves you with no heat

I really wanted to like this thermostat , But A right pain in the A
There is no way over ride the temperature without it deciding what temperature it believes your house should be at
This could take up to several hours for it to decide when it will turn on the heater
Google needs to modify their software to allow humans to override the thermostat temperature
Since they are the ones paying the gas and electricity bill

WORST PRODUCT & SUPPORT (rant justified - really)

I have two Nest Thermostats that i purchased and installed in May in my home for two furnace/AC systems we have. Everything was working fine until last week at which time one of the units died. After MANY hours of debugging/resetting and swapping units I determined it was the Nest that had died and after MANY hours on chat with nest support they agreed. After an attempt to have me send my unit back and the send me a replacement we agreed that they would ship the replacement and then have me send the unit back - charging me if I failed to do so. I was to receive an email with confirmation that evening. A week latter and COUNTLESS HOURS on the brain dead support chat later I have no confirmation (although being assured it might be coming) and no next step. Literally every day I have inquired and pleaded my case and each day I get further away. NEST/GOOGLE have hit rock bottom. I am ready to move away and embrace Apple something I thought I would NEVER say. I am a google wifi, pixel 4, nest home, nest thermostat x 2, android developer with Play store apps, etc etc person. What a let down.

I came home to find nest on, in heating mode, at 59 degrees when it is set to 63. I have no idea why, but apparently houses in my area had a very short power outage (less than 5 minutes). Maybe it is related, maybe it's not but this is not acceptable. I am looking for a replacement that can go to heating after a reset, if programmed so.

We're sorry to hear about these issues you've experienced after a recent power outage. The Nest should resume operation as soon as power is restored, so it's unexpected to hear that the Nest didn't activate the system once power was restored.

Cost me hundreds in HVAC repairs

After having the nest for a year, I started having significant problems with my AC/Heating unit. Multiple items on the unit were breaking, I wasn't able to switch between AC and heat as the weather shifted, etc. After over $500 in HVAC repairs/service calls, we finally found out that the issue was the Nest. Something went wrong with the thermostat, causing my unit to short out and the box to burn up. After replacing the nest, my unit has been fine.
I've contacted google, and they won't do anything to replace it. While it is out of warranty (the warranty is two years, and I've had it two and a half, but the issues started after one year of ownership. It just took us a little bit to figure out it was the thermostat), I don't think a $250 thermostat should go bad after only two years.

I purchased my nest at Best Buy about 5 years ago. 3 years ago the batteries in the nest stopped charging, Figuing it was a fluke, Google replaced the unit. Here I am 2 years later holding a dead nest. Out of warranty.
Certainly not worth the price tag.

Delayed start is big problem!!

I spent $250 on this piece of junk and end up wasting $7000. After I changed my old thermostat to the nest, I noticed the room never cooled to my set temperature. I thought my AC system was old and inadequate and replaced the whole system for $7k. The new AC still did not cool the room. Then I noticed the Nest kept going into delayed start, and would stop cooling after only a few minutes. Called customer service, their reps were clueless even though I had wait long time and spent couple hours with them.
Apparently this is a problem affected incredible amount of customers. I googled and found many complaints on this. Tried many solutions offered online, and none worked. I had to switch back to old thermostat and now everything worked.
If I can sue Nest to get my $7k back, I would. Really the worst purchase in my life. Be warned if you want to buy this piece of junk. If you donot believe me, google Nest delayed start. I would give it negative one star if the option exists.

While I used to be able to recommend this product to anyone as I have been a user since the first Gen Thermostat....I can no longer do so. Today 05/10/19 an article was posted about the Nest Thermostat becoming fully phased into Google. Nest had privacy settings, a smart hub that could control other smart devices, and a fantastic app....there all going away. But the most important item of all was the Firewall that Nest developers built into the system. That is also being erased. Google will now have access to you data in your home ranging from your location down to the IP address of your wifi Router.
https://apple.news/AF9xQOBCfQ7Kw-mfdCqq-Jg
this is the article detailing the "Death" of the Nest system. While I can say this is a sad day for me as I have become accustom to using this product it is not the end of the world. Considering I spend a significant amount of money at Best Buy I will try other smart Thermostats and give everyone updates that are needed.

Buyer Beware

This thermostat cost me more money than what its worth. Nest have techies developing it, and the techies don't have a clue what HVAC is or means. This thermostat is made to shut down the compressor with out your control, which means your house will get cold. It's made to save the inviorment, not keeping you warm.
After all the money and time I lost from nest thermostat, I bought a ecobee, and it worked like a charm.
I also threw away all my google assistant speakers, apps etc... and went to Alexa.
I finally have my house warm without being dictated from a thermostat telling me me what Nest thinks It should be.

Bought mine before Google bought them out; If I knew that was coming I would not have ever bought this as I do not like my information to be sold for a profit. The device works as expected BUT is not HomeKit compatible. I am going to sell mine to the highest bidder and buying a Honeywell Lyric. Lyric does everything Nest does bit at a much lower price and is HomeKit compatible.
