We hear you and we understand that having the trim kit included with every purchase of the Nest Thermostat can be ideal for you. However, the Nest Thermostat Trim Plate is optional and sold separately, and is only designed to cover any imperfections on the wall, or where you may need to cover up holes or marks left behind by your previous thermostat. Which means having it included in the box with every purchase of Nest Thermostat will make the product more expensive, and may not be ideal for users who don’t need the trim kit.

Worth the purchase

Nevertheless, if it was not included, I definitely would have purchased the trim because it provides a clean finish to the thermostat.

Decent trim kit

So far, I have broken one female bolt holder from a backing plate and broken three bolts. This was all with a manual Phillips screwdriver, and I am not particularly strong. Flaw may be related to blue locking compound (?) on side of each bolt. Spent 1/2 hour with Google support. They would not supply replacement bolts or replace the backing plate. Said three bolts were enough and for more bolts seek out a hardware retailer. The thermostats are fine, but the trim kits are not well made.

Garbage.

The real nest, the trim plate comes with it and actually covers the electrical box behind it because it curves flush into the wall. So irritating it would be designed this way -- especially when the other trim plate works great.
