    Not as good as expected

I read the reviews prior to purchasing this product with the hope that it would do what I needed it to do. It was marked down in price and I decided to take a chance on it. I wanted to use this microphone with my compact Sanyo camcorder to get better quality sound when filming. Using the built in mic on the camcorder produced a lot of noise such as popping and clicking sounds with an overall muddiness of sound because it picked up everything including sound from your subject. This external mic had a wind cover, band pass filter and some amplification abilities. I was hoping that these capabilities would give me a little more control of my sound and I could adjust for non-optimal environments but that was not the case. The overall build quality of the unit is not good and the amplifier produces unwanted noise. The size of the mic and the battery compartment is ungainly and makes the camera feel off balance. I have used many external mics and I would not recommend this one even as a low cost alternative.

I went with this Insignia model in the hopes that it would be comparable to the RODE Videomic but for a cheaper price, and I think it serves the purpose well enough. The high-pass filter helps with background noise, the build seems sturdy enough, and the shock mount works well against vibration. The only issue I could find is what seems to be a limited effective range. The mic range seems to drop off much closer than expected, especially outdoors, but overall still a good way to get better sound than a built-in mic.

The unit provides reasonable equivalent sound levels to the camera's internal mic. Avoids some of the camera generated focusing noise, and wind noises. Fits the mount, and the shock supports seem to do their job. Have not determined battery life... but with internal battery and low draw on the electronics... one should get well beyond a 2 hour video shooting window. Without special test gear, can't confirm what the pickup pattern is, but seems ok for an inexpensive device.

Save yourself some headaches!!! I have overlooked the bad reviews expecting to have something different, but this shotgun is a waste of time. It has a whistling noise when you get near it while plug into your camcorder, and it worse than the built in microphone of my Sony AX53. This shotgun won't give a clear sound but noisy! I mean I even called the company, all they said is nothing else good may come out of it and I should return it! What a waste!

The sound quality isn't the best on this microphone. It's pretty average. There's still some white noise during silence, but I think that's pretty normal for a microphone in this price range. The biggest benefit is that the shotgun-style picks up what's in front of it, and doesn't get as much background noise as an omnidirectional mic. It fits well and works fine. Just don't expect any great audio. It's not bad, just not great.

This isn't, nor shouldn't be considered pro quality. That being said, I have used it for two weddings along with my Canon Vixia R700 camcorder, and I got nice results. Just make sure to check the manual for proper settings for each situation i.e. is there loud music? Although the sound quality isn't great, it is certainly clear. I would recommend this to anyone who does light video/audio work where built in mics are lacking.

This unit provides decent isolation from camera related noise such as operating the camera. You will need a flash mount to connect the microphone to the camera. I have used a camera brace The sound focus is on the wider end of shotgun pattern so it will not provide great isolation at distance. For more typical camera to subject distances, the focus is solid.

Did what it's supposed to do, I had no problems with it. Pleased with the product and especially at the price it is, you can't beat that. I'm sure there are bigger better things out there. For me as amateur videographer, this was a very helpful and useful tool. Two thumbs up.

Insignia On-Camera Shotgun Video Microphone (Black) is a very inexpensive option when compared to Rode Video Mic Pro. On the plus side, it is an inexpensive product and the high-pass filter helps with background noise On the negative side, it has limited effective range. Furthermore, the quality didn't seem any different than the onboard microphone. Lastly, it feels cheap and flimsy.

Purchased this to boost the sound for video taping a school play. Worked well and noise level seemed pretty low. Plus was that I found it in store at a very reasonable price. Needs a 9 volt battery - can not use the camera power which is fine as I would rather ensure longer battery life by not sharing. Ran it about 4 hours on one battery with no sign of the 9 volt going dead.

As expected this microphone is a much improved addition over any cameras built in mic but it does have it's flaws. The construction feels cheap and flimsy. The audio quality is good but only as good as you would expect for the price. Overall i feel that it fulfills my need for an upgraded mic but i would advise anyone to consider another entry level mic.

I found this microphone on the open box shelf at the Best Buy store it normally was $60 but I got a for 35 because it was an open box so far it seems to work very well for what I need but if y'all are going to do a lot of talking or video photography I would suggest you invest in a better mic but this would be a good for a beginner

I was looking for a microphone to attach to my note 5 as I use that to make my youtube videos. This mic connects via the 3.5 audio port and when in video or recording mode, picks up all the sound beautifully. Its clear, crisp, and no choppiness.

You need an adaptor if you have a Canon camera. But other than that I have no complaints. It does have a little white noise but that's something you want for reference for when editing a video. And if you need to, it's really easy to get rid of it.

Without spending too much money getting a road Mike, this would be your next best microphone to buy. This for microphone gives you awesome quality without breaking the bank and is definitely a great starting off point for videography!

I found this mic on a clearance rack at my local store and it worked without a problem. I have had it for a few months now and has survived plenty of travel including an eleven-hour bus ride. I am enjoying it thus far.

If you have a Sony, you have to get a Sony mic. This one will not work with it. I didn't have a chance to evaluate it because it wasn't compatible with my camcorder. That's the only reason I wouldn't recommend it.

This microphone is really good for the cost. The only draw back is that if you’re using a Canon DSLR you’re going to need an adaptor to plug it into your camera. Other than that I highly recommend it.

I used this and my audio was ruined. All that was recorded was a ticking sound. I have it 3 stars because I don't know if it was something I did wrong but in not taking that chance again. I returned it.

I bought it because of the price but now I wish I hadn't purchased it and gone with a better one. The mic is not very secure when it sits on the DSLR even though it comes with the mount. It's not very sturdy.
