This is a good usb hub if you don't have a case cover. In my case I have a case cover so I'll have to look for a different option. Pros Conveniently small hub pack with essentials ports like 2 USB port, 1 HDMI, 2 thunderbolts, its snaps in place Cons No case cover can be used The price is a little higher than other brands its kind of difficult to take off.

Velez379, Due to the nature of the JCD382, having a cover may impede proper connectivity resulting in the mini dock not functioning as intended and we apologize for the inconvenience. We have other models such as the JCD383 which connect via a cable and that may work better for your setup. If you wish to learn more about the model, please contact the support team and an agent will gladly assist.

    Added ports and convenience

For on the go or stationary use the j5create has 2 Thunderbolt ports (male) that plug into the side of a MacBookPro replicating the 2 Thunderbolt ports of the Mac and adding 2 USB3, 2 cardslots (which I have not used) and an HDMI port (full-size) on the back of the product. I mainly needed some normal rectangle size USB3 ports for external hard drives and the Thunderbolt ports for the Power Cord and a Thunderbolt monitor (which needed a thunderbolt3 to thunderbolt2 adaptor). I plugged a 4 port USB3 hub into one of the USB3 ports on the j5 giving additional flexibility. I could not use the thunderbolt3 power cord and my Thunderbolt Display on the j5’s thunderbolt3 ports and I am not sure if one of the ports acts as a USB port as opposed to both as thunderbolt3 but my Mac has 2 ports on the other side of the computer too so I just power on the port closest to the mini headphone jack on the right side of the computer. I do not think the monitor/Power issue is a j5 issue but an Apple one. Or I may have just not given it enough time to sense the connections. But through the j5 I am able to power the Thunderbolt monitor (port furtherest back on the unit), an external Thunderbolt SSD on the next thunderbolt3 port and the usb hub (where there is an external Blu-ray writer as well as usb mouse and one more USB port for another external harddrive) on the first USB3 port of the unit. All work without a hitch and required no drivers to use the j5. It seems the j5 can also be flipped and attached to the right side of the MacBookPro but this would cover the mini headphone jack so I did not try it. I also did not try the hdmi port as of yet but I should be able to drive an hdmi monitor alongside the thunderbolt monitor and the laptops screen so 3 desktops would be available. The j5 has operated without a hitch allowing me to copy files to and from harddrives, write cd’s and dvd’s And have on the go convince if I just need the laptop when traveling. I would be cautious because the j5 hangs off the side of the Mac only connected by the 2 thunderbolt3 ports and is a target for hitting and knocking it senseless but this would be an issue with any one of the several j5-like products out there. If this is a fear for you there are products which have relatively the same expansion possibility as the j5 but are attached to the Mac via thunderbolt3 cable.

A great extra port solution for a MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro (15", 2018) that was assigned to me for work. (I am a Mac person, so this was not a burden!) I had previously had a 2015 model with Thunderbolt 2 ports and had purchased expensive docks to attach to my peripherals at the 3 offices that I work out of. When I got this newer laptop, I bought some usb-c docks that attached with a short 6" cable to the MBP. I still had to attached the power cable also. When I started having issues with one of those, I picked up this j5create dock in hopes that I could get back up and running. The really cool part is that I could plug the MBP usb-c power supply into the j5create and now it is just a matter of plugging in the j5create and I am ready to go. In terms of video support, it is driving a 34" ultra wide AOC monitor with 3440x1440 resolution with no problem using the HDMI port. I also have a webcam and Time Machine backup drive attached to the usb 3.1 type A ports and I am plugging in my iPad (via a usb-c to lightning cable) on the usb-c port. With all the ports occupied, it gets warm, but not hot. While I generally don't use the sd card reader, it is a nice to have feature if I were importing photos, etc. The 4 stars instead of 5 is that I would have liked to have one more usb 3.1 A port to attach the occasional external data drive that I use.

Great device for Mac users due to the plug and play nature allowing you to add monitors, pass through charging, read SD cards and more all in one. Simply insert to the side of the Mac, watch the blue LED light turn on and you're ready to work!. As for needing more ports; we have other adapters that may better fit your needs and if interested, we would value the chance to discuss them with you; our support information can be found on the device packaging and a representative will be ready to help.

Absolutely a great product. Really makes the laptop function as it should. Adaptable with regular USB ports, HDMI port, SD disk port, macro disk port, USB 3.1 port 1& 2. If there is a disadvantage you must plug it into a power book with two power ports it needs two ports to support it one doesn’t work. Other than that no disadvantage that I can see.

I went through 2 different usb-c/Thunderbolt Docks. The first was $130, the second was $180 and both would not display my on my second monitor. I bought this J5Create as a last ditch effort. I'm glad a I did. Plugged in my HDMI cable and plugged into my Mac and BOOM, second monitor turned on right away. This is exactly what I needed and happened to be the cheapest option.

I purchased this device for my MacBook Air. It doesn’t work unless you hold the device when inserted at just the right “sweet spot”. Not acceptable. The packaging said not to return it to the store, but contact them. I did that and they said to return it to the store I purchased it from. I bought it while traveling. It is now past the return time period. I would just like a device that works.

I am typically really excited about these reviews on the products I own, because usually the only reason I review them is to tell everyone how amazing they are. This isn't far from that, but not 100% perfect. To get the bad stuff out of the way, this dock is believe is overpriced. There are very similar products out there that do the same things for other devices that are 1/10 of the the price of this device. The only other downside to this product is during use, it tends to get very hot. From other reviews from other customers, this just seems to be a typical case for this product. So be careful when handling the product during use, because it gets warm enough to cause harm. NOW, for the good things. This drive has everything I'll ever need in it. It has a Mini SD Card Reader. It has a Normal sized SD Card Reader. It has (2) USB Plugin Ports, (1) USB Fast Charging Plugin Port, an HDMI Port, an Ethernet Port for internet, and a USB-C Plugin Port for charging your computer while using the device. It is a very handy device to have if you own a newer MacBook Pro, because you don't need all of those other devices to be able to hook up multiple things. This device can do lots of things in 1 bodied device. 8 out of 10 for this based of price, heat, and usage.

    Poor consideration of laptop cases

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I was pleased to find that the physical connection of the dock to the ports was tight and “clicked in”, but only if I took off the bottom half of my already super thin laptop case. Maybe if the USB-C parts had some kind of minuscule extension from the dock to give more space that would help? I’m no expert on product design, but at least there’s a perfect fit on a MacBook Pro *without* a case. It’s kind of cumbersome to take it off each time... though I didn’t consider this variable either. Also, the HDMI connection doesn’t work for me, not sure exactly why, so I’m still using another j5 adapter for that on the other side. I regularly use an external monitor so that was a bit disappointing. Still, I love the design and usability when my charger, mouse usb dongle, and other accessories are plugged in. I got tired of multiple adapters hanging off when my laptop was up on a stand, so for that reason I’m keeping it!

Because the JCD382 requires a full insertion to the side of the Mac to function as intended, you may have to remove the cover on the computer; we apologize for this inconvenience. We have other adapters available that may be better choices such as the JCD383 which connects via a host cable and then you can keep the cover on.

I needed an SD and USB port reader for my MacBook Air and this did the trick. I prefer this one because I have a laptop stand and I don't want it dangling from the side. Only downside is I have to remove it when I want to charge my laptop but it's not a deal breaker for me. Other than that it's very easy to use and works well.

Since Apple decided to change the charging port/cable and remove the USB and SD card ports I decided to purchased the J5create. It's a nice product that works as it claims. It made the transition to the new MacBook Pro easier, didn't have to buy additional cables or adapters to over come this problem. I think this is the best fix for this issue. I haven't used all the ports on the J5 but the ones I have, USB, charging port and SD slot all worked as they should, didn't see any difference in performance. It would be nice if they provided a case to keep it in when not in use. I don't leave it plugged in all the time only when needed. I'm glad this product was available at the time I decided to purchase the new MacBook Pro.

Pretty expensive for what it is. The good: - Looks good. The finish is very close to that of a MacBook Pro. - Feels solid. It feels like a quality accessory. The bad: - Doesn’t support Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adaptors. This was confirmed with support. - Doesn’t support charging through either port. - The SD card writing is very slow. The limitations make it hard to recommend this. There are much cheaper ways to get 2 USB-A ports and a card reader.

Works well and gets the job done, but the only downsides are: 1. Can't be used if you have a case on your device. The USB-C connectors aren't long enough to fit. If you have a case, you'll need to remove it. 2. It gets quite warm. Definitely not hot enough to harm anyone or anything, but absolutely very warm to the touch when it's plugged in. 3. Since it's plugged into the MacBook ports, it's drawing power to work. It doesn't have a primary power source other than your laptop, so it will drain your battery faster. Either way though, this is WAY better & more convenient than any single single and thus has every port you'll need, including Thunderbolt3 & 4K HDMI.

Purchased for use with my 2018 MacBook Pro. Does exactly what is designed to do, and helped me eliminate multiple adapters. The only downfall is how this item fits into the USBC drive if you have a case on your Macbook. Was designed to fit flush against the MacBook, so a case makes it tricky... It works with a case but you do not have a secure connection causing it to disconnect from time to time. That is the only downfall I have experienced with the item.

Greg, constant connection and disconnection could be due to a cover on the Mac, or possibly loose USB-C connectors. Along with my new MacBook Pro my wife purchased the j5create USB-C multi-port dock since the newer MacBooks do not come with USB ports. Best Buy highly recommended this unit, without being pushy, since she told themI have several USB devices. When I first plugged this in it didn’t appear to work so I checked their web site which showed I needed a special driver. It was for a model older which I downloaded and installed. I still could not get it to work but soon noticed it had to be firmly pushed in with a slight click, at which point the blue indicator light lit up. After noting errors with the other beta software I was running I contacted j5create’s tech support and explained the problem. They responded within a day and after trying several fixes they had me send a System Report. They immediately responded back telling me the unit I had was a newer model and was plug-and-play, thus requiring no additional drivers. They provided step-by-step instructions for removing the previous driver components. This dock has worked great with all my USB devices from USB 1-3 as well as SD, micro SD, and USB-C. I have not tested the HDMI since I have no need for that functionality. The only issue I have is the USB ports are too close together and will not allow two thumb drives at the same time, unless they are very narrow. I can’t say enough about their tech support. I will definitely purchase their products in the future.

There are dreadfully few docking solutions for my taste in the Apple realm. The PC has so many better options for all things docking. This device works great and is a good solution for what I needed. I had to have a way to use USB 2.0 and 3.0 devices along with having an HDMI output for presentations. This is way smaller than an iPhone and gives me the connectivity I need. I through this in the small (change/pencil) pocket in my work backpack and always have it with me. I do use this in conjunction with a larger docking solution so when in my home office I have my built-in MBP screen and then 1 additional screen off of each dock. This is a good solution for mobility and general connectivity, especially when trying to reuse older USB devices. Many of us don't have all the USB 3.1 (USB-C) devices yet and this is a good bridge.
