Great looking and performing turntable from JBL!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The turntable: For me it was an easy setup, but this is not my first TT. The shipping boxes contain everything you need, including a cable for your preamp, a platter matt, a cartridge (more on this later), evn a 45 RPM adapter. Once it was all together I tested the table with the iPhone app "RPM Pro". I measured a speed of 33.47 RPM, and wow/flutter at 0.20%. JBL doesn't seem to list specs like this, but I couldn't detect any wow or flutter in my listening tests. When you press either speed button on the front panel there is a little pause, then it takes at least one full revolution for the platter to get up to speed. I usually give it a couple more revs before placing the needle on the record. Once it's at speed it is very stable; using my record brush doesn't seem to faze it, while my old ttable would stall. Maybe in version 2.0 the orange LED in the speed switch could turn green when the platter is at the correct speed? Now, the cartridge supplied (Audio Technica VM95E) is VERY bright, well, too bright sounding for me. I have a number of cartridges that I can swap out, and those sounded great. And that is as specific about the sound as I'm going to get, as the cartridge you use will have a far greater impact on the sound quality that any other part of the table. So, IMHO, the overall performance of my records on this table is excellent. I am very pleased with the design and appearance of this TT. I wanted something that wasn't just another boring old black plinth and straight arm, and this is exactly right. One last note about the grey smoked plastic cover. It is slightly frosted on the inside, maybe to conceal fingerprints, or cracks. But this also made it difficult to see where the needle was on the record (was the record almost over?) I might have preferred a clear lid. Again, just my thing.
