REVIEW of LG Refrigerator LR______
Highly recommended. Very functional and high quality.
Cannot comment on longevity. Only had it for four months now.
WHICH MODEL? LF or LR?
Note that LG makes two series of very similar looking refrigerators – the LF series and the LR series. You really can't tell from photos of the outside. This review is for the LRFXC2416S, one of the "LR" series. This is three doors with the ice maker in the top door and the Craft Ice in the freezer. The LR series differ from the LF in these ways:
• Higher-priced ($500-1000 more)
• A tiny bit taller (about ½”),
• Chrome trim inside (instead of white),
• LED lighting on the SIDES and top of the upper section
• Better quality drawer rollers
• “Craft Ice” in the lower ice-maker.
• 3 drawers in freezer (rather than 2)
FRENCH DOORS? OR SIDE-BY-SIDE?
We were pretty happy with our old side-by-side and debated the switch to French Doors. We went French and are very happy. Bottom Line: going French makes the refrigerator section MUCH better, and the freezer a bit worse.
The refrigerator section seems roomier and it’s a lot easier to move things around due to the wider shelves. We like the crisper drawers at waist level rather than ankle level.
The shelves on the door are HUGE on the right door – that seems standard these days – and tiny on the left due to the icemaker. This works out well. We don’t buy gallons of anything, so our door shelves are filled with bottles of mayo, pickles, garlic, etc. The small shelf on the left is dedicated to hot sauce, a major convenience.
Having the freezer on the bottom is just not as convenient as the side-by-side – but even as a family that uses the freezer quite a bit, we’d do the French Doors again. We are in the top section 20-30x a day, and in the freezer 4-5x. And over the three months we’ve owned it, we’ve learned to utilize the space better and remember where things are. The little extra freezer drawer on the LR series is helpful, but it is so narrow it takes some getting used to.
ICE MAKER IN THE DOOR?
We were reluctant to buy another model with the ice-maker in the door because our last one broke and couldn’t be fixed – and it seems everyone has problems with them. Plus, you lose some space in the refrigerator section.
However, (1) my wife uses a LOT of ice, (2) I mean a LOT of ice, and OFTEN, and (3) we have all the space we need in the refrigerator section. After three months, this seems a good decision. My wife gets ice up to 10 times a day, so not having to open the freezer is handy. The drawer is just not as easy to open as the side-by-side freezer door was.
Hopefully the unit will not break, or if so be easy to repair. In any event, we now have TWO ice-makers. If one breaks, we use the other.
CONTROLLER:
I ddon’t really like this. You can adjust the temperature of freezer and fridge sections easily from the ice dispenser. I don’t need this front and center, as we’ve changed it a few times without meaning to. Unfortunately, if you use the “lock” function, you can’t change from ice to water dispense.
DOOR ALARM:
Some reviews note the door open alarm chime is annoying. I totally disagree and presume they changed it? I find it soft and just the right tone to remind me to close the door if I left it open by mistake, or if one of us is spending way too much time deciding if the leftover pizza is too old to eat or not. If you ignore the chime, it stops quickly. Glad it’s there, actually.
CRAFT ICE:
The LR series have “craft ice” in the freezer – round golf ball size. You can make 3 a day (clear ice) or 6 a day (cloudy.) (They have to freeze them slower to keep them clear.). They’re pretty cool looking, and they last longer in water bottles, but overall we’d rather just have a regular icemaker. We don’t entertain much, maybe that’s different for you. Minor drawback. They are a good conversation piece.
COUNTER-DEPTH?
This was a no-brainer for us. Space is at a premium, the fridge location is central, and it sticks out much less. It has significantly less space, but it’s plenty big for us (family of three) even though we eat at home most days, my wife is Vegan, and use tons of fruits and veggies.
The only real issue is that the crisper drawers are small. I’d like them to be larger. Actually, I’d like to have four of them instead of two. Even at this size I have trouble getting to the stuff on the bottom. A tad shorter and twice as many would be my request.
COOLING AND ICE-MAKING SPEED:
We’ve had no issues. When you get this installed, you need to give everything a week or two (!) to get cold and catch up on the ice. It makes it within 24 hours, but somehow it needs to hit a rhythm. Those first few days are a bit nerve-wracking (“will it work??”). Now that we’re in the groove, we’ve got all the ice we need. For parties – maybe not, but we haven’t had many of those lately, and probably will need to just buy some ice.
Some reviews noted poor cooling or trouble making ice. Importantly (and a bit unusually) both the air intake and exhaust are on the BACK on the bottom. So you MUST have clearance in the back, plus either the top or the sides. Ours is a pretty standard install in a wall of cabinets with a countertop, and we left 2” in back, 3” on top, and is open on both sides between the upper and lower cabinets. If your space is closed on all sides and top, or if you stick this right against the back wall, I doubt it would work well unless you put some vent holes in the cabinetry somehow. Just to be OCD about it, I put a 1.5” foam cylinder (insulation sleeve for a ¾” pipe) on the back wall mounted vertically from the floor to the top of the refrigerator so that the intake air would come in from one side and the exhaust air would go out the other side. It also keeps others from pushing it too far back. Not sure if that does any good but it seems like it should. I like the intake in the back because we have two dogs, and most refrigerators that have the intake in the front suck up a lot of dog hair and dust.
NOISE:
This is quiet, same as our last fridge or maybe quieter? We don't notice either. Some have commented on how loud it is? Not our experience at all. It does make a bit of a racket when the ice is dropping, sounds kind of like.... ice cubes dropping...
LR or LF?
Which model to buy? (See top of review) We are pretty frugal, and the price of this sucker was more than I liked. We almost stuck with our old side-by-side with the broken ice maker. We have cube trays for a while. I almost got the LF series with no ice in the door, as it was way cheaper. But I really wanted the upgrade to the LR series, so I looked around and waited until I found a scratch and dent, which took many months. I am glad I did, I liked the upgrades, but my wife would definitely go with the cheaper model.
I like the LED lighting on the sides (makes everything easier to see and brighter), I like the chrome trim inside, I notice the upgraded rollers every time I use the crisper drawers (the drawers in our last fridge were basically plastic scraping on plastic!), I like the extra drawer in the freezer. Hopefully it will last longer and cools more evenly. I don’t even know if the cooling systems are different, but hopefully the mechanical inside is better as well.
Overall, the space and convenience, and having ice out the wazoo has been great. Worth the $$ for something we use so many times every day.
LINEAR COMPRESSOR
Ah, how could I forget the Linear Compressor issue? Lots of stuff on the web about this. I read quite a bit about it, and was amazed that there wasn’t more information from LG out there addressing this issue when there is so much negativity. I almost did not buy LG due to this. However, I really liked the design, and assume they fixed the manufacturing or design issues in the years since this became a problem. There is a 5 or 10-year warranty on the compressor. At work, there are two LG basic refrigerators that have been working for years. I liked that it was made in Korea. Not as good as being made here in the USA, but I couldn’t find a real USA unit that I Iiked.
Overall, not sure exactly why I decided not to worry about the issue – NOTE TO LG – why not explain the issue and what you are doing about it in clear, plain language somewhere? I assume this must be something to do with liability. Our last fridge (non-LG) had a known issue with wires going into the freezer door to the ice-maker, I found quite a few videos about it and complaints online – but nothing clear from the company was ever found. I guess big companies can’t admit fault too publicly?
OVERALL COMMENTS AND QUALITY
Love it.

Was going to get a more subdued fridge w/o ice/water on the door but saw the Craft Ice feature on the LG and was sold.
In general great fridge. So much more usable space than the GE fridge it replaced. Crazy knowing both fridges have the exact same measurements.
Rich looking inside, doesn't smudge on the outside. Runs quiet except with the party Craft Ice drops it's 3 nuggets.
So on to the Craft Ice, that's why your here now isn't it? The pics provided by LG show crystal clear ice that look like about 2.5 to 3 inches in diameter based on the glass and models hand. I just reread the product description on BB and I didn't see ice dimensions. If you download the product manual off the LG site it does say 2 inches.
So the Craft Ice balls are two inches, one end tends to be a bit flat with a dimple, the rest of the ball perfectly round. They are clear, not quite the crystal clear from the product images but about 85-90% clear for me. When they are plunked into a drink they look even clearer.
They said the water supply can affect things but where this fridge resides the water is excellent, also water goes through the supplied filter so was expecting better.
I waited one month before doing this review as they say the Craft Ice get better over time. And it goes get better, the first week or so the Craft Ice is a bit malformed and not so clear. Sometime in the second week the Craft Ice peaked and has remained consistent.
They're good, I like them but was slightly disappointed hence the 4 out of 5 stars. They come in batches of 3 and each batch takes 18-24hr. There is a cool option to double the speed but they say the clearness degrades. I haven't tried the 6/day but will and update this review.
Just fyi there is regular old-school ice too that comes out the front door, smaller size cubes which I like, regular cube shape, creates quickly, operates well. LG cleverly put the regular ice bin in the left French door behind the food panel. E\asy to get to if you want to pull out the regular ice out to fill an ice bucket. So don't think you'll run out of ice. Just the big boys take a day, and I will say, they are worth the wait.
All that aside, I do like the Craft Ice. I had tried molds, they're never clear even using boiled and distilled water, plus what a pain. Right now I have about 30+ almost perfect bad boy balls of ice in my fridge heading into the weekend. How cool is that!
Cheers!

We've had the fridge delivered on 11/3/20. Delivery and installation went very smoothly, especially considering the amount of stairs and sharp turns they had to maneuver! The delivery team gets an A+ from me! The door finish does a good job of not showing fingerprints. We are very pleased with the french door style and ease of use as compared to our previous side by side model. The internal space is well laid out and it feels much roomier that our last fridge. I was surprised by how much regular ice it produces. With 4 heavy ice users in the house, we've yet had it run out. Craft ice is a bit slow, but that's for special drinks. It makes 3 per day. Oh yeah...the "craft ice" looks like little Death Stars!
One thing to consider, is the way the door hinges are positioned. On our previous model (Kitchenaid side by side) the door hinges were much closer to the door corners. The LG hinges are sitting further back from the front. This would not be an issue unless you had the fridge right up against a wall or doorway to the side. The door wouldn't open all the way as it was touching the doorway trim. The options were to just not push the fridge all the way back or trim the doorway trim piece. I paid more for a counter depth model, so I cut the trim.

Wow this is our first new fridge in 19 years and the improvements are amazing! The French doors with the WIDE deli tray could be my favorite feature but a close second is the different types of ice cube shapes, including round golf ball sized balls. Who knew ICE could make me this happy?!? The doors are deep and hold so much more than our old fridge. I just open the doors and stare inside in amazement and the annoying (yet helpful) beeping starts to tell me the doors are open. Yes, I know!!! And getting it from Best Buy was the right move! They installed it easily and leveled it. The stainless finish does show fingerprints but nothing a quick wipe with a micro fiber cloth can’t handle. The freezer is finally where it should be, on the bottom. I read all the reviews for two options before purchase and this one lives up to the hype. This fridge made our entire kitchen (which needs updating) automatically look better. LG for the win!

We have had this fridge for almost a year and love it. We did have someone come out and measure and they ordered it for me while they were here. A week later it came and the delivery team was great as well. We did buy the $599 Geek Squad extended warranty. Everyone loves the Craft Ice and our family of 3 doesn’t not use up the normal ice. I was a little nervous about that due to the small compartment. I like the 4oz, 8oz and 32oz pre-measures water dispenser. I do wish it was a feature you could touch and it would fill without holding it.
I have recommended this fridge to others and would buy it again. I have noticed it is quite a bit more expensive a year later.

I like this refrigerator for the counter depth and the size. I did take one shelf out for taller items and think there could be more spaces added to the bottom to have more options for adjusting the shelf heights. I am still getting used to organizing the freezer drawer. It seems to keep my veggies fresh longer. Overall, I am happy with the refrigerator.

Nice looking fridge. Performs well. My only critiques are that I wished the craft ice was larger. They are roughly 1.75”-2” in size. Also the shelving set up is adjustable but I personally would like the adjustable shelf rails to go two notches higher and lower. That would give more options for shelf set up. I created my own 2.5” craft ice (see attached pic for comparison) I also prefer a side by side vs the French door models. Due to lack of inventory lately I settled.

Perfect So Far!
Nice Looking, Nice Features
Spent hours researching appliances online and finally decided on LG based on reputation and quality ratings. Purchased about 1 month ago and so far it's been outstanding. The counter-depth design looks great in kitchen. We really like having 2 Icemakers . In-Door Icemaker, the slim design ice maker saves a lot of space and Freezer Icemaker(CraftIce). The refrigerator layout is great and easy to organize food. Very quiet, water and ice dispenser work great. I have not had any problems- works great.

LG tilting right refrigerator

This refrigerator was delivered and tilted to the right, the delivery and set up people could not correct this condition and recommended a replacement. The floor, where two previous refrigerators GE and Electrolux have been before, is perfectly level and the kitchen cabinet is perfectly square, so the tilting LG refrigerator must have a design and/or manufacturing defect.
A Best Buy agent called me and we arranged for the replacement to be delivered on 11/30/2021: when it came it had the same tilting right condition. We like the refrigerator, however the tilting righ condition prevents it being leveled with the two front adjustable feet that are intended to only tilt the refrigerator towards the back so that the two doors will self close when opened 45°. I had expressed to the Best Buy agent I spoke about a replacement that if the tilting condition would be in the replacement that we would want to had it replaced by a refrigerator of another brand, and she said that that was a possibility. Being that the case

I am very happy with my LG counter depth refrigerator.
It replaced a side by side Kenmore that was purchased in 1995.
The water and ice dispenser on the door are great because you don’t have to keep opening the door .
Sabastian was the installer and Di d a great job and removed the old refrigerator too.
One problem was a large dent in the freezer door handle.
Sabastian wrote it up and assured me it will be replaced.
