Even though these are sold out in most places, I believe a lot of this feedback applies to the second generation and is even improved upon from what I hear. The dials are the best feature on these headphones, hands-down. It's a simple and elegant way to control the sound and noise-cancelling. Surface hardware generally has stellar design and this is no exception. In the WFH age the physical mute button is a welcome addition as well. Battery life isn't up there with Sony and Bose but hasn't bothered me in the slightest: I use these for 8+ hours a day, and I only have to charge them once every few days. I've thoroughly enjoyed using these headphones and anticipate that I will continue to enjoy them for many years.

    The complete package

Such a great pair of cans, great noise cancelling, USB-C, good sound... and easy switch between multiple devices. No it's not the best noise cancelling (Bose QC35), no it's not the best sound (Sony 1000xm3), and no it's not the cheapest. But I owned a pair of Sony and Bose noise cancelling headphones, and I'd rather have the Microsoft ones any day. I had a real preference for the Sony headphones, but the simple fact that I can't connect and easily switch between multiple devices made me returned them. The surface headphones are relatively light, sound great and perform very well. I'm very happy with this purchase. I use them every day at the office and I can't wait to try them on the plane.

I loved these headphones because of the build quality, the unique way to interact with them, and the noise cancellation was great. They're sharp looking and stood up well while I had them. However, with iPhones they would consistently drop connection and interrupt audio when my phone was connected to another device (smartwatch). Looking at the supported audio codecs I saw that AAC wasn't supported. This has been remedied with the second iteration, but I wanted some ANC headphones for my daily commute on public transit (rip). Went with the Sony equivalent and might come back to surface headphone when those kick the bucket.

Better than Sony, better than Bose

At the top of my priority list is a quality product that provides premium noise cancellation and comfort. This product delivers in spades. These are easily the most comfortable over-the-ear headphones on the market. They're the perfect weight and the soft leather wrapped memory-foam ear cushions are the best on the market. I can wear these all day without 1) getting a headache, 2) my ears sweating, or 3) remembering they're even on my head. I own the Bose QC35's as well as the Sony WH1000M2's. They're the same price as the Surface headphones and I find them lacking. First, the Bose provide excellent noice cancellation but little else. They lack in comfort, style and features. The Sony's are great headsets, but oddly, they don't fit on my head well, they give me a headache after extended use, and the noise cancellation gives an annoying hissing noise that irritates after a few hours. Additionally, your ears will sweat profusely. Annoyingly, they also auto-shut off after 10 minutes if you just want to use them as stand-alone noise canceling headphones without a bluetooth connection. These Microsoft headphones have simple tactile controls for dialing up sound, dialing down outside noise, or amplifying ambient noise. Simple and intuitive. The feature to pause your audio when you set them down is brilliant and flawless. The tap to pause feature works well; call-clarity is adequate considering there's no boom. The quality is exactly what you would expect from a Microsoft Surface product. I'll be honest; I bought these on name alone. I own both Surface book 2 sizes, three surface pro tablets, and buying my wife the new Surface Go tablet. The quality of this line is impeccable and these headphones definitely do NOT disappoint. For the first time in my life, I find myself wearing my headphones all day while I travel or work in my workshop. The only downside is the the battery life is not as long as its competitors; which i don't really care about. 15 hours is plenty and the USB-C connector charges them 3x faster than the usb micro does. So again, advantage Microsoft. Now, MICROSOFT, get on the ball and get us that Surface Phone. It will revolutionize a tired phone industry hungering for something innovative and new. Tiles are superior to icons and I miss my old Windows phone. Make it compatible with android apps (or universal app standard) and you'll have yourself another absolute winner.

I bought this product to compare it with other noise cancellation headphones that I own. I was thinking I will return it quickly as the Bose and Sony have better quality. To my surprise, I ordered the second one. This one has the best noise cancellation and it pairs with my iPhone and Android phone at the same time and flawlessly.

Started to fall apart. Mostly on me as I threw them casually here and there. A bit broke off and that started a chain reaction. enough about that. No matter what you do its a good headset. Just don't work outwith them, less of a chance of them breaking that way. They will last and work lovely as long as you treat them as such

Sound great, noise cancelling is OK, had Bose and have to say those are miles away from the surface, but the surface are good enough. The controls are great, feel so fancy and the build quality is great too, as expected on the price point. That said they are not flexible AT ALL, they don’t bend or fold, the earcups have a bit of movement and twist to one side when you put the headphones on your neck (did I mention that the headphones auto pause when you take them off and auto play when you put them back on?) Cortana app sucks 1000000 Recommend it a lot

These are awesome headphones! The battery life is around 10 hours. With the COVID-19 issues, a lot of training classes and even throw in a PC gaming session with friends online and yep, again 10 hours at least, at 9 hours Cortana told me i had an hour left. :P I was able to plug them in and they charged while continuing to game! Great dials and buttons! Work very well and I've been told my voice has sounded awesome! Great Buy and Great product! Thx Microsoft you didn't disappoint the Surface name!

We own the Sony WH-1000XM3 and I think they're amazing but we were looking for a second pair of headphones. Both the Microsofts and the Bose 700 were on sale so I decided to try them both. The Bose had a much more premium feel but the actual sound quality was pretty darn close in back to back comparison tests. Since the Microsofts were MUCH cheaper given the recent steep price drop, I decided to keep these.

I have spent a few weeks researching these headphones and seeing them compared to the Sony WH1000MX and the Bose QC35. I took a bit of a risk to buy them (but that's why we have 14 day return policy right?). Please note I do own a Microsoft Surface Book 2 and love the Surface line-up, and I also purchased these open-box for about $230. Pluses and Minuses here and then a full review below: Pluses: -Great convenience features such as dials to turn up and down music, and taps on the ear pieces to pause, etc. If you are coming from a pair of headphones with lots of buttons, this will greatly simplify your life! -You can pair up to 5 devices with these headphones and it will automatically know which one is playing music, taking a call or not. You can switch seamlessly between all the devices in your life. -Bass is booming on these headphones! That is definitely some bass rich stuff. I personally love that, I can understand why others might not. -Ear cups are comfortable and the noise cancelling is pretty good (not best in class, but definitely good). Cons: -Cortana is included. She really isn't that useful (sorry Microsoft). I don't really use Cortana much, and she isn't much of an addition here. -15 hour battery life isn't up to standard in this price range. I am coming from a pair of Sony CH700N's which I bought from Best Buy in Black Friday of last year for $99. The CH700's are a good set of headphones. The noise cancelling is good (saved me sleep from a lot of noisy parties outdoors). But I always felt they were somewhat cheap feeling, and also it is a chore to switch between devices with them, you need to press/hold power button and then go to device to pair. I switch between devices often and that is a major nuisance. Also adjusting the volume on the CH700N's is not amazing and noise cancelling is non-adjustable (it's all or nothing). Pausing and playing music requires pushing buttons and knowing which button is which (a learning curve I haven't mastered yet). So, I am brought to the Surface headphones because I just want a much more simple experience with my headphones. The touch controls so far are good. It doesn't respond immediately to every touch but it doesn't take long to get it down. One tap pauses, two taps skips a song, three taps goes back one song in the playlist. Simple, super convenient, and intuitive. You don't need to fish around for the right buttons with these headphones. The headphone dials are also very interesting, and I like them alot. This is just a really simple & easy way to turn up or down the volume and the adjustable noise cancellation is nice. One thing that was unexpected - I thought each dial would have a physical stopping point, a point at which you know the volume is max, or the noise cancelling is max. However, you can actually spin the dials completely around without stopping. The volume control/noise cancelling is completely software/device based. You can spin the dials into infinity. I think music benefits in some ways from the noise cancellation being down. If you did not know "turning off" the noise cancellation actually lets you have "sonic hearing" with the headphones (similar to Sony WH1000MX when you cover the right headphone). It feeds the mic input back to your ears, pretty cool and convenient for the office so you can still hear your coworkers. Another neat feature is that the headphones know when you take them off and automatically pauses the music. It takes about a second for the music to pause when you do so (which was my mistake a few times) but it does work accurately as far as I can tell (you just need to be more patient than you think). These headphones also work seamlessly with my Xbox which is a major benefit over the Sony WH700N's - I always had weird problems with them. If you plug in the Surface headphones to an Xbox controller using the included AUX cable you can utilize these for games and for party chat AND the noise cancelling and volume control also work in this configuration. The headset charges via USB C and features a 15-hr battery life. The battery life is quite low for headphones in this price range. Sound quality is really pretty good. Maybe not best in class, but definitely better than my previous pair. The bass is quite the experience on these headphones. That stuff is meaty and deep. I'm not sure if everyone on the planet would like that, and I hear that you can rebalance them using the Cortana app. My goal in purchasing the Surface headphones was to find the one set which will rule them all. I can play Xbox. Pair with my work computer, phones, and personal laptop all without touching the headphones. And the convenience factor on playing, pausing, and adjusting volume is significantly better than my previous pair. If I had to buy against the WH1000MX at $299 vs the Surface Headphones at $299, I would be remiss to not choose the Sony's. However, at the $230 or the $250 price point for the Surface Headphones I feel they are totally justified. They are really like 90% of the 1000MX in terms of sound quality, but also pack a punch with their own interesting features.

Noise cancellation is not the level of Bose's devices. This is a lot more of a multi-purpose headset where you can rely any devices to connect easily via Bluetooth or 3.5 cable. Great thing is that it has type c cable to charge and connect to devices, and also have really great, one of a kind, unique user control. It uses specific techniques to find out where you took the headset off and will auto play and pause. material is made finely and feels great. I personally use it more than 8 hours a day almost everyday and I dont find any wear, tear, or breakdowns over the past 3 months since this review's date.

It’s a little heavy after I used it for 1 hour. And with noise canceling, I felt a little dizzy. Maybe it’s caused by different air pressure in my ear. It’s also a little hot to use in Summer. After a period of time of not use, it will turn off. Next time when a call comes in, I have to do some extra action to use it, which is not convenient.

Originally, I was skeptical because of Microsoft not having a huge history with audio. But the noise canceling and the comfort on this easily competes with the Bose for similar cost. I recommend this even a bit more for the comfort side, didn't realize any heat over hours of use.

These headphones are top notch. Sound quality isn’t as good as bose or sony but they match up pretty well to them in sound and definitely beat them in comfort. Really easy to connect to multiple devices as well

    Pros mentioned:
Ease of use, Noise cancellation, Sound quality
    Cons mentioned:
    Mobile phones

If you depend on a headset for your job THIS HEADSET IS NOT FOR YOU. For casual music great , looks great, comfortable and battery life is fine to last a couple work days and it charges fast enough not to concern yourself with it. Big dials make easy to use controls for volume and noise cancellation. Please read on for some of the bigger issues with Microsoft Surface Headphones: This is a big one - No mic noise cancellation. The microphone in this thing can pick up the sound of crickets dancing in my neighbors yard. And while everyone is complaining who is causing that noise on the call? You'll be oblivious to your own noisy environment as your active-noise cancelling is likely working perfectly for the moment. Why for just 'for the moment'? After extended use the surface headphones noise cancellation will sometimes just not activate. Turn on/off again, usually having to wait 10-30 seconds between turning at back on some times helps, but sometimes not. If you're on a important phone call the headset may decide to blow out your eardrums with a BRRRRRRZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ noise. Not due to low battery mind you, this appears to be a hardware or noise cancelling defect. Sometimes you're able to power it off to resume, but sometimes not. Sometimes connecting the charger fixes it, but not always. Either way, you're jumping out of your skin for your phone to save face and you're not likely to care what the headset did wrong this time. Speaking of what the headset did wrong. The headset mute is supposed to auto-enable when it thinks you're done talking, or if you remove your headset. This is a fine idea, but in practice it mutes and unmutes randomly enough to the point where you have no idea if you're able to speak effectively on a call without the constant worry of what did the surface headset do this time. When you combine this with additional mute settings on collaboration tools like Zoom, Webex, as well as your own device laptop/phone local mute settings... its a mess .. this headset is a wild card better avoided. Part of the problem is you will not find this out right away. You'll think maybe it's your phone acting up... or bluetooth interference.. or just a glitch/hiccup ... and then once you've narrowed it down to the headset .. you're past the return period. Bummer! Make sure to leave your review next to mine and please do not buy the "2nd Generation" Surface Headphones that are identical except with paint change and slightly extended battery life.

I was hesitating to pay so much for this but it has good connectivity to my office laptop where I normally use for conference calls on Microsoft teams.
