    A Nice Surprise

Shadow of Mordor is a pretty good game for fans and non-fans alike, and it also has one the best innovations of this gaming generation. The gameplay is a really nice blend of the Batman: Arkham series (Free-Flow combat, light stealth) with some Assassin's Creed (climbing and traversal). If you're a fan of those games, you'll love this. What sets this game apart, however, is the Nemesis system. The ability to have an on-going, procedural antagonistic relationship with the villains is just such brilliant addition, and it adds a significant amount replayabilty to an otherwise pretty standard framework. However, the story is only serviceable, and the scope is unfortunately limited. This is a very thin revenge story stretched over 30-plus hours of game, and while the developers did their best to vary up the environments, this game is still entirely set in Mordor. It gets a bit dull after a while and could've benefited from seeing some of the wider Middle-Earth. This product includes the base game and all of the DLC. Interestingly, the Trophy/Achievement information is considered separate from the standard version. So, if you're hunting for Platinums or Gamer Score, but you already played Shadow of Mordor, maybe give this package a look.

While this does not hold true to the original series of Lord of the Rings, it does well at diving deeper into its imaginative lore. Making this fun fantasy realm that you can play in. Outside of that it does have this Assassin's Creed style of gameplay. Running and jumping all over the place, while you either stealth kill or fight your enemies head on. The gameplay itself is fairly fluid and the graphics despite this being an uspcale of the previous gen releases are pretty good. Plus it has more RPG mechanics added into it with the leveling up and skill board that you can dive into. This follows the movies as once again Wargs cannot talk. Also the elf speech and so on. Tolkien does not dive into those separate languages so much in his books and the Wargs said some horrible things in human tongue. It is definitely on the violent said as heads will fly. Not really a lot of blood, but definitely a lot of decapitations. For me this has been a nitty gritty blast with a fantasy world that I know fairly well. The gameplay is easy to get used to and I get to run down my enemies in various ways while searching high and low for little power ups and upgrades.

I will list my findings and experience: 1.This is not an actual RPG game, it have RPG elements but aside a skill tree and exp bar there its not much from it. 2. The stealth mechanics are pretty basic, just pass over the enemies quick enough for it perception bar not to turn red and you'll be fine. 3. Story wise not the best narrative, if you like a strong story driven game, go somewhere else. 4. The Battle mechanics feels like a refined version of what WB did with Batman Arkham Origins (which its a good thing). 5. Sometimes the camera get stuck at walls in the middle of a fight, specially if you try to climb over a structure. 6. I feel they needed to polish more the parkour/climbing elements, sometimes i get stuck on ropes or if I want the character to jump in a certain direction the response does not reflect what I'm trying to do. Despite all of this the game feels fun and its fun to play so I'm still giving my 4 stars, also to have all the DLC content avaliable its a great bonus, in term of difficulty this is no dark souls but you will die 1 or 2 times in each session witch is nice, that way I have the sensation of challenge from the game.

Fantastic game! I absolutely loved my time with Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. I earned the platinum trophy playing daily for a week (approx. 34 hours.) The story is good and written so that anyone with even casual knowledge of the Lord of the Rings trilogy will have an easy time following it. The combat is where this game really shines, it is an adaptation of the combat style used in WB's Arkham games. The finishing moves are gory and really add a flourish to ending a difficult foe. The Nemesis System makes combat very exciting, as you never know when a past adversary will make a return to exact revenge. The world adapts to your actions and you can hear guards talking of your past exploits when you sneak around a camp and captains will reference things you did in past battles when facing them a second time. Very immersive. The Game of the Year edition adds both DLC packs and all available character skins. I haven't played the DLC yet, but I've read it is very similar to the main game, fleshing out a couple of the side stories. Fans of third person action games will love this. Fans of Lord of the Rings will love this. Fans of good games will probably love it too!

Complete edition of great game, with one big flaw

Shadows of Mordor is a great game. It takes the very responsive and empowering combat system from the Batman Arkham series (another WB interactive property) and transplants it into an orc-slaying wonderland. The Nemesis system is second to none and should be implemented into other games immediately. Being able to forge rivalries and revenge with NPCs that other games treat as cannon fodder adds a lot of unique depth and fun. Like with Arkham, the game was released and then offered a constant trickle of DLC offerings, so having all that content in one place for one price cant be beat. Here's the really unfortunate part. This game CAN NOT use existing save files from the copy of Shadows of Mordor you might already own. This seems crazy to me. "Game of the Year" editions are nothing new, and when I popped it in and found out I'd have to start over it just about killed my interest in playing it. So would I recommend this game? Yes, if you've never played it before or are trying it on a new system. No if you've already got a save file with runes and progress that you want to continue, cause it's a clean slate in these lands.

Not What I Imagined, But Far Better

Perhaps I didn't have my expectations as high as I should have, but this game has exceeded them in every possible way. I've played for a total of 12 hours so far, and I've only completed 10% of the story. Though the main quest may not take very long, if my game progress is anything to go by, there is obviously plenty to do in Mordor. The stealth is probably the most enjoyable factor for me. I love how you never run out of enemies. You can clear an entire area of Uruk, only to have another hoard walk by seconds later. There is always chaos around you (in a tasteful way) - Uruks fighting each other, trolls rampaging, caragors invading enemy camps causing hysteria that works to your benefit, etc. If anything would take away a star from my rating, it would probably be the story. Not the best I've seen. Not bad, just maybe mediocre. Still, I love the game too much to take away from the rating for that. Excellent excellent game. Highly recommended! Also, thanks Best Buy! Got this for an extremely low price for a limited-time-only sale.

    Fun button masher

I really enjoyed this game. It was a fun button masher with not much strategy needed. I really liked how the enemy uruks gain rank when they kill you and they become harder to kill the next time you fight them. Whenever you find a captain or warchief they always have some comment to make about the last time you fought them. I enjoyed the way the game is set up, you can go do story missions, or side missions whenever you want. they have all of the items labeled on the map. You just mark the quest you want to do and it'll show up in the world view and show you how far you are from the start point of that quest. You just go there and start the quest, if you didn't play the game for a month, you could pick it up and continue without having to remember where you needed to go or what you need to do. If you like a god of war style button masher, then you'll probably enjoy this game.

This is one game you don't have to be a Lord of the Rings fan to enjoy - over 30 hours in and I still can't stop playing. Amazing game with great graphics and a fun open world to explore. Combat is similar to the Batman Arkham series and flows well - just be careful not to get swarmed! The enemy AI is quite challenging, especially in large groups, and the Nemesis system adds something to each encounter. Captain Uruks and above will remember each encounter - I'd even seen some return with missing eyes and scars from our last encounter! Nothing gets the blood boiling like seeing some no-named orc promoted after he kills you and gloating about doing it again your next encounter! Don't hesitate to pick this one up if you're interested - I'd go so far as to say it's worth buying a PS4 or Xbox One console for!

NOTE: This GOTY edition is not compatible with the standard edition's save file, so if you have saved progress from the standard edition, you'll have to start all over again with this one. The most interesting thing about this game is the way the enemy hierarchy works. Kill a leader and another will take their place, or intimidate them into revealing intel on other captains (their whereabouts, weaknesses, strengths, etc.). The gameplay mechanics borrow heavily from the Batman Arkham series (understandable, also a Warner Bros Studios franchise) which I think is a good thing, and there are also a few other powers that feel unique. The playable area is a decent size. Graphically it's a little monochromatic but otherwise good, and there's enough lore to keep the most die-hard LOTR fans satisfied.

I read many online user reviews of this game at Best Buy, Amazon, Game Stop & professional reviews at IGN, GaneSpot & more. Most user reviews & professional reviews were very favorable. I agree with the very favorable reviews. Gameplay is a bit challenging in the beginning until you start getting rewards for upgrading your powers & weapons. Upgrading your combat moves & weapons make the game more interesting & fun & increase your ability to take on tougher Uruk Captains & larger hordes of Uruks. Combat is similar to Batman Arkum Night but somewhat easier to use. Visuals are very good in general. The game does get a bit repetitive, but most games do at some point. But the game is fun & definitely worth the sale price I paid at $29.99, especially with the Game of the Year edition with all of the added content.

I've had this game for about 2 weeks and it's a great game. It feels very much like the Assassin's Creed or Batman Arkham series of games in regard to stealth and combat. Like those games, some of the quests may seem repetitive, but if you liked those games you will like this one. It may take a little while to get used to how the game needs to be played in order for you to be successful, but once you get a hang of it, it is difficult to put down. Seems to stick close to the Lord of the Rings story line for those who love the movies/books. This is definitely a Mature Audiences game as you will spend a lot of time slaying enemies and some of the graphics are gruesome. Awesome graphics, sound and voice acting. Great game with high replay value.

TROPHY HUNTERS - easy platinum! Everyone else: SOM is not an overly beautiful game and the storyline is nothing special. It does however provide lovable characters within a fascinating lore that will have you entertained for roughly 20 hours (time it takes to 100% the game, plus a few hours for skill variance). The DLC offered will easily double the hours played, if that is your cup of tea. The game has a very Assassins Creed feel to it and the combat system is much like the Batman Arkham series (just used as reference points). Not a difficult game to beat, nothing too challenging. It offers enjoyment for gamers of all ages. At the Best Buy price ($18, before reductions applied) it is well worth it.

This game was an awesome surprise, not a lot of hype until it came out, but delivered. You can play for 40+ hours easily. The game play is a lot like he Batman Arkham games, but with LOTR feel. I played it when it first came out and bought it again to play through a second time after giving myself a break from it. Even if you don't like LOTR this game is awesome. Manipulating the enemies and turning them against each other is a lot of fun. Also, starting random fight is cool, even when you pick a fight with someone you shouldn't, you can get stronger and try again eventually. I would give these 4 1/2 stars if it was an option because of the final boss battle which was a huge letdown, but the rest of the game is flawless.

Shadows of Mordor is a great game. Not just for fans of Lord of the Rings, but for any action game fans as well. If you enjoy the Batman games on Xbox 360 and PS3, you'll like this game as the combat system is very similar. The reason being that this game started off as a Batman game, and gradually evolved into a mature action game using the LoTR license. The game has great depth, and the Nemesis system is revolutionary. You can watch a standard Orc/Uruk kill you and become a future boss that you'll have to kill. It's random. This version includes all the DLC as well as PS4 Pro support in the form of better graphics and higher resolution. It's also budget priced. It's well worth your time.

If you love lord of the rings, this is the BEST game they have put out. This game is a mix between Assasins creed, Batman Arkham series, and the most gruesome game you can think of. It is an open world game where you can climb, sneak, and murder everyone just like in the game assassins creed. If you have played any of the batman arkham series, the mechanics in this game are similar, which is awesome. Well timed pushes of buttons create combos that make for a smooth battle between you and hundreds of orcs. Along with a good story, chopping off heads, stabbing orcs in the face, its no wonder why this game won game of the year on plenty of websites.

I original past on this game because I thought it was an RPG (Role Playing Game) which I do not have time to invest in. I later discovered by reading some reviews that it was more of an action/adventure game... and because I waited long enough I can now get this 'complete' version with everything ever released for this game included on one disc (no download codes needed). There are some strategy aspects that I really never bothered to understand and you don't really need to. You also do not need to be a LOTR fan to enjoy this gory and well-crafted adventure.

This was great price for a really awesome game and all its DLC. The only negative thing I have to say about it is, because all of the DLC is on disc (which is great), it has a different trophy set than the first run of the game. So, if you buy this hoping to flush out your original trophies or achievements, it's not going to work as neatly as you might want. Overall, I really liked the game. I thought the graphics were great. It did get a little repetitive. And I'm no expert on LotR, so I won't comment on how it ties in with that universe.

Shadow of Mordor GotY edition combines a fantastic game with all the extra downloadable content you'd ever want. With an intuitive AI gaming experience Mordor provides multiple hours of gameplay even after completion. Game play is very reminiscant of the Batman Arkham series. Enemies "remember" you from past encounters and comment accordingly. With some guest appearences from, your favorite, Lord of the Rings characters, surprises lay ahead. DLC gives more than just extra weapons and costumes, but extra missions as well. Should have won Game of the Year and this edition proves it.

This game came out of nowhere when it first released a few years ago, it took everyone by surprise by how similar it was to the successful Arkham games. There wasn't any doubt in my mind that it would be a hit. Especially since the reviews and word of mouth were praising the unique nemesis system. It can get a little repetitive with it's content, but it's a brawler and those are fun the way it is. As of the writing, the sequel was just announced, so if you're playing catch-up, now is the time to do so. Plus it's very cheap!
