With that being said this game has its own identity, however if you are into pet collecting and raising this does have that in it. Charming characters and story, good graphics, and a ton to do. If you like monster hunter this is not like the others but an rpg where you have a story, hatch, collect, and level up your monsters you find. Yes there are items to use, armor, and accessories you need to better equip as well as gathering materials for better armor, gear, and also getting them through Subquest. Great game definitely a must buy

This game is so much fun. I have played it for hours and hours. I have a few issues with the way you choose your eggs and some of the controls are a pain, but nothing worth knocking a star off. This game is a mix of Monster Hunter series and Pokemon, so it will appeal and be like by a large crowd. The amiibos for this game are amazing as well, if you can find them.

    Not just another Pokemon clone

As a fan of both Pokemon and Monster Hunter, MH Stories was on my radar the moment I saw it's announcement. I mostly expected a Pokemon clone with Monster Hunter elements sprinkled into it but instead it feels different. It borrows very few conventions from Pokemon that Monster Hunter Stories stands strong on it's own legs. I would venture to say that it is 85% MH and 15% Pokemon as far as that goes. The game revolves around a village of Monster riders who were attacked by a Nargacuga shrouded in a purple mist. Your overarching task is to find it's source and eliminate it. Like proper Monster Hunter games you outfit your character with giant weapons and armor and take on quests from the quest board. However instead of one quest at a time you can take on as many as possible as these serve as the sidequests to the main game. Once you are geared up and quest log filled you now take on the open world. Along side you is your monster. These serve many purposes. Battle partner, open world mount, item seeker, vine climber, swimmer, etc. With the ability to have 5 with you at a time, your Monsters can help you traverse the open world with their special abilities (Think HMs from Pokemon). In battle, monsters use attacks and abilities at their own discretion unless commanded to do different while you perform your own attack/ability. If either you or a monster is downed you will pop right back up and use a heart. You have 3 hearts between you and your monsters which act as lives more or less. Once all three are depleted you lose. These can be recharged in towns. Combat revolves around a Rock, Paper, Scissors system that is easy to use and understand. After a while you will be able to mount your monster in combat and use powerful special attacks. Monsters are gained from finding and entering monster dens and collecting their eggs. This become a very fun and addictive side of the game as each monster hatched has different passives. Overall this game is very enjoyable. It has more than enough Monster Hunter elements to keep it true to it's series and enough Pokemon elements to scratch that itch. Overall I have been very much enjoying this game.

I have tried to play Ultimate Monster Hunter 4 and Generations but I just can't seem to get into it. This monster hunter is so much more fun to play. It looks better, has similar quests and you get to fight monsters but you also have monsters on your side and each monster has a different strategy and abilities. This is one of the best game on the 3DS in my opinion.

I don't have much experience in the Monster Hunter series, but the look and style of this game really caught my eye, so I figured I'd try it. So far I have put 35 hours into it and have yet to finish it or be bored with it (I've seen that some put 200+ into it). Rock/paper/scissors style turn based battles. Great Zelda/windwaker style graphics and cutscenes really keep the game fresh and going for me. Time to look into the main MH titles.

I haven't played this myself, but I've been given a detailed overview of the game from my son. He's 10, loves most RPGs, especially the Fire Emblem series, and he won't put this game down. It is different from previous titles in this series in that this is a more straight-RPG experience than previous Monster Hunter Titles. I would recommend that any parent give this a shot for their kids if they like Zelda, Final Fantasy, or Fire Emblem.

Capcom has had a spotty record of releasing Monster Hunter games in the past. Dos for the PS2, Portable 3rd for PSP/ PS3 and ALL of the Poka Poka Airou/ Felyne Village games have failed to escape Japan. Given that Japanese sales of Stories didn't really set the world on fire I was sure that it wouldn't get a North American release. Happily, I was wrong! The introduction drags a bit and some systems like armor crafting take awhile to become accessible but it's a solid little title that does its own thing. They're a little simplified, but many of the systems from the normal Monster Hunter titles are present. Armor's a single piece now instead of a mix-and-match. Item combinations are restricted by 'recipes' instead of just maching stuff together until something works. It's kind of similar to the original Monster Hunter's 'tiers' where high-rarity items couldn't be made without a high enough 'combination' skill. It's super-dumb that you can't just make super potions out of the gate but it gives an excuse to go on more side-missions to collect new recipes. It's fun, colorful and has more going on than its cutesy look implies. Hatching favorite allied monsters is good but once gene transfering is available it opens up tons of possibilities! The tutorial example results in a fire-breathing lagombi, a fuzzy ice bunny. It runs fine on the original 3DS, though in towns it loads low-detail people placeholders very frequently. The detailed models eventually pop in. I don't know if the New 3DS eliminates this, but it's perfectly playable on on the old hardware.

First off, this is nothing like the Monster Hunter games as they've been. This is a turn based RPG set in the Monster Hunter world, though instead of hunting, you're riding and making friends with the monsters. It's a great story with lively characters that shows you all aspects of the Monster Hunter world with a splash of Pokemon in there. Great for kids or adults.

Monster Hunter Stories is everything I'd hoped it would be. A solid, albeit cliched story, excellent gameplay, and even some PvP. Gameplay is turn based, rock-paper-scissors combat. While you still can deal damage if you lose the contest, it is reduced. Each move must be carefully thought out turn by turn, unlike many RPGs where you just throw out your most powerful move until you can't use it anymore. Speaking of powerful moves, pulling off the cinematic Kinship move feels extremely satisfying. The story revolves around you, a fledgling Monster Rider, as you quest to put an end to the Black Blight that is slowly infecting the land. As you travel you will make new friends with not only the Monsties you hatch, but also the NPCs you meet along the way. The only complaint is how slowly the game renders sometimes. NPCs will sometimes appear as a grey collection of polygons until you get very close, and the draw distance for NPCs is very short. I've had this game for about a week, and I've already sunk over 88 hours into it. I highly recommend this for anyone who has a New-3DS.

I played the demo of the game and was completely hooked. Gameplay is fun and exciting, story is interesting. Only reason for 4 star rating is there are a few glitches and frame drops. Other than that, if you're a fan or games similar to Pokemon then it's a must buy for any 3ds owner.

This game is simplified compare to the original. This feels like a pokemon game with the paper, rock, scissors attack patterns. It has the classic turn base rpg, bright lively colors, and great graphics. It can be a turn off for serious gamers, or those who are really into the Monster Hunter series. The worst thing about it is the amiibo feature, where certain amiibo are Japanese release only.

Really well and a new twist from the other Monster Hunter games, the RPG mode is fun to play with especially the "Ride On" mechanism of the game, it get's repetitive though once you try to level up and try to collect the monsters, also get's a bit tough if you don't have a guide on which monster is what egg...all in all enjoy it and a fun hand held game to have on the road.

Monster Hunter Stories is a wonderful experience and addition to an amazing system, though if you've never been into the Pokemon style "creature-catching" concept you should try the demo provided on the Nintendo Eshop before purchasing.

This game combines traditional turn-based combat with the action RPG universe of the MoHun series, while throwing in some added mechanics to keep combat and progression fresh. I would definitely say Stories is a fun MoHun Lite game with a slightly higher focus on storytelling. The artwork and graphics are very stylized and are pleasant to look at, and seeing the monsters in this style makes them look pretty cute. The story is decent and provides a good motivation for the MC to improve while adding a Kingdom Hearts esque trio of friends. You do get a sidekick in this game besides the monsters, but his dialogs do get repetitive during fights. Overall he's fine though As a fan of MoHun, I Rate Monster Hunter Stories a 4/5, not perfect but still a very excellent game,
