Perfect entry into serious sim setups

For years, I resisted the urge to add a wheel to my setup. Controllers are good enough, I told myself…but then this bundle from MOZA came along, offering many advanced features at a price point that wasn’t totally crazy. I figured I’d give it a spin, and see if the hype about a wheel and pedal setups was true.
For this enthusiast bundle, MOZA has centered on their R5 direct drive force feedback base. Accompanying the base are the SR-P lite pedals and the ES steering wheel. Everything is well packed in the box, along with a basic getting started guide, the power supply, a cable to connect the pedals to the base, some screws, bolts, and wrenches, and a USB cable to connect to the PC. Getting the clamp attached to the wheel base just involves 4 bolts. Mount the clamp on the desk, connect the cables, line up the wheel and just push it into the base, and you are ready to power up and get started.
The R5 base provides plenty of strength and is compatible with all of the current MOZA wheels. It’s compact, but still offers great fidelity and enough power that you can feel the road.
The wheel is a pretty typical “GT” style wheel. The leather wrap feels nice in the hands, and the button layout is intuitively laid out with a D pad and traditional ABXY buttons, along with several other buttons and the shift paddles. It all feels very high quality. If I had any complaint, it would be that the buttons are not backlit. After a while you get used to where they are, but even a basic single color backlight would have been handy here.
The pedals work well for what they are. The base is not very heavy and you may need to mount it to something to keep it from moving during spirited driving depending on the floor it’s on. These aren’t the most advanced pedals out there, but for getting started in more serious simulator racing, they certainly do the job.
MOZA’s software is pretty good, with tons of options that have built in descriptions to help figure out what everything does. Calibrating the pedals and centering the wheel are all easy, and then you are pretty much ready to go!
Using a direct drive base, wheel, and pedals is a revelation. Now I finally understand what the hype is all about. Controllers are a sad substitute for a true wheel and pedal setup. Ripping though the gears with the shift paddles, feeling the road tug and push the car, the force of an impact, all delivered with high fidelity through the wheel, is an entirely different level of immersion. The shift indicators lighting up and then flicking the shift paddles feels like a real race car. I found myself just driving around for the fun of it in Forza Horizon 5, almost feeling like I was really driving a real car, just enjoying the scenery and feeling connected to the car. The R5 base provides strong force feedback, and while there are even stronger bases out there, this is plenty for most gamers. It’s kind of the perfect blend of size and strength.
One little quirk, and this is not the fault of MOZA, is that to get the system to work in Forza Horizon 5 requires loading a special config file and setting up a few things. MOZA provides easy to follow step by step instructions, and it was working in just a few minutes.
Overall, this setup is a great balance of features, performance, and price. If you are moving up from a basic wheel to a direct drive, or wanting to spend once on a setup that will have plenty of features and staying power, this is one you should consider.

Gear Drive to Direct Drive - Worth the Jump!
|

Let me cut to the chase - if you're still grinding away on a Logitech G923 or similar gear-driven wheel and wondering if direct drive is worth the hype, the Moza R5 bundle answers that question with a resounding yes. After spending years troubleshooting everything from servers to gaming setups, I've learned that sometimes the jump from "good enough" to "genuinely good" transforms your entire experience.
First impressions matter, and the R5 doesn't disappoint. The aviation-grade aluminum wheelbase feels like it means business, not like the plastic toys many of us started with. Setup was refreshingly straightforward: connect a few cables, install the Pit House software, and you're racing. No driver headaches, no compatibility nightmares. The ES steering wheel clicks into place with a satisfying mechanical precision that screams quality, though I'll admit the synthetic leather isn't quite as premium as what you'd find on higher-end wheels. At this price point, I'm more interested in function than luxury.
The star of the show is that 5.5Nm direct drive motor. In plain English? It's the difference between playing a video game and feeling like you're actually driving. Every bump, every loss of traction, every subtle change in the road surface translates through the wheel with zero delay. Coming from gear or belt-driven systems, the silence is almost eerie. No more grinding gears drowning out your engine sounds. The force feedback has enough strength to give your arms a workout in longer races, but it won't rip the wheel from your hands like some of the 15Nm+ monsters out there. For most of us, it's the sweet spot between immersion and usability.
Here's where the Moza ecosystem shines. That quick-release system isn't just a gimmick. It opens up a world of wheel options as your skills (and budget) grow. The Pit House software might not win any UI design awards, but it gets the job done with enough customization options to dial in your preferred feel across different sims. Want more rotation for drifting? Less force feedback for endurance races? It's all there, and more importantly, it actually works without requiring a computer science degree to figure out.
Bottom line: if you're ready to graduate from entry-level gear but aren't prepared to drop $1,000+ on a high-end setup, the R5 bundle hits the sweet spot. Is it perfect? No - those pedals will eventually need upgrading, and if you're a console gamer, you'll need to look elsewhere. But for PC sim racers who want to experience what direct drive is all about without breaking the bank, this is your ticket.

This Moza Racing Simulator Wheels and Pedals are replacing a much more budget friendly setup I had installed previously that I was pleased with. However, the previous setup was plastic based and over time of letting a very excitable child play his games with it, I found myself pulling out the soldering iron and building brackets to fix the wear and tear of that device. So when this Moza setup became available, I could not turn down the opportunity to see what a higher price point setup had to offer. Spoiler: Totally worth it!
Immediately out of the box you will feel why this product demands a more premium price point than some other options out there. This Steering wheel and pedal combo includes a lot of aluminum, steel, and leather that will excite even the most mild tempered gamer. The steering wheel just radiates on exotic feel and when mounted to the direct drive base unlocks your chance to feel like you are in an exotic car cockpit without the six figure investment. While on the topic, the steering wheel has a very slick quick disconnect function that will scratch that itch for all of you Nascar fans out there. When your session is over, press the connection collar, disconnect the steering wheel, and hang it up like the pros do! Simple, but a really cool feature that will allow you to mount the steering wheel base at a multiuse desk, but remove the wheel itself to free up desk space for other less exhilarating activities.
This setup includes a gas and brake pedal that are also very rigid. Out of the box they are extremely far apart with the brake being even farther apart than a clutch pedal would be in most cars. However, this pedal base is modular and you can adjust pedal spacing to your liking, as well as pedal feel and engagement.
This steering wheel does include force feedback, which I love, however does require some fine tuning out of the box. During most of the testing, this setup was used with BeamNG, which is very customizable and after a couple hours of testing and key binds, I was able to get the steering wheel to my liking. I will say that if you are using this steering wheel for similar, the force feedback needs turned WAY down as the wheel base has a pretty powerful motor and at factory settings will overbearing.
Moza does have its own program called the Pit House which is fairly intuitive. They also market an app, however I was not able to get it to work successfully with the steering wheel. Using the Pit House program, it will walk you through initial calibration which is quick and simple. Minor problem was that after I went through the initial calibration and got everything set up for my liking, I was advised that there was a firmware update, and the new update requires you to recalibrate everything again from scratch. So pro-tip...skip calibration until you update firmware.
I like this steering wheel. I REALLY like this steering wheel. My only true complaint is the setup instructions and hardware...or lack there of. There are setup instructions included, however they read like laundry instructions for a suit. Writing is not descriptive, no helpful images, and no list of included hardware. Some bolts, washers, and nuts are included, however which ones you use are a matter of trial and error and there is no listing of what parts are included with the kit. I ended up needing a few additional bolts and nuts to affix this setup to my simulation rig, however I got it done and now I am doing nothing but enjoying my experience with the Moza Racing R5 Racing Simulator and am looking at adding on with their other accessories.
Don't let the price tag drive you away. This setup is work the leap!
