Don’t buy for smart homes

Annoying to use and terrible for smart home devices. Most smart speakers or smart home accessories will have trouble connecting to the network since it tries to combine 2.4 with 5g and they say your device will know how to differentiate, but it never works out that way

Hi SPC409,
Thanks for letting us know of the issue with your Nest Wifi. Sorry to hear that your smart home accessories are having issues connecting to Nest Wifi and we’d like to improve your experience.
Nest Wifi uses the Band Steering feature to guide your connected devices based on their capabilities, and attempt to select the band that will deliver the best performance. Both radio bands are active simultaneously and Nest Wifi keeps it simple by automatically choosing the band that gives the best Wi-Fi connection.

Nest is garbage. Don’t waste your money on it. They sent an email saying the router is bad and will replace but I’ve been jumping thru hoops trying to get info they want. I finally said enough. I’ll write off $250 to bad experience and never buy a Google product again.

I was switching from a Google Mesh to a new unit and got the Google Nest WiFi. After over 2 hours of trying to get it set up and searching help forums, it went back to the store. I picked up a Amazon Eero and in 10 minutes of unboxing I was up and running. What more can I say.

This item was recommended by a geek squad tech during an in home visit. Unit would not cover a small 900 square foot house. Base unit performs OK. One satellite connected but at a much diminished speed, Second satellite would not connect at all from second bedroom.

Hi notgreat,
Thanks for reaching out to us. We're sorry to hear of the connectivity issue you have with Nest Wifi.
Factors like thick walls, mirrors, windows and even signals from other wireless devices may cause interference that will shorten the distance Nest Wifi router can cover. You may need to shorten the distance between your Nest Wifi Router and Nest Wifi Points to get a better signal coverage.
We care about your experience with our products. If bringing them closer doesn't fix the issue, then we may need to have a look at it in order for us to come up with a resolution. You can always contact us whenever you visit the Google Wifi support page here: https://support.google.com/wifi/gethelp

1) Setup fails with "problem connecting to cloud" and there is no way to debug that. Never had a problem with many other routers over 10 years.
2) Setup has a few steps that take too long -- 30+ seconds
3) Factory reset takes 5+ minutes. Why?

This is a short review. Why? Because thing thing ROCKS. The looks are sleek. Set-up is a breeze. The connection is so much better. Compared to my previous router (supplied by the internet company) this is a Lambo. Make sure that you have your Google Home app downloaded on your phone. Click the PLUS sign and it will automatically detect the router. Follow the instructions. When you are done, just go to another room and plug-in your POINT. Follow the instructions and you are all done. I cannot tell you how the performance of our home internet improved, in minutes. Highly recommended. Done.

Hi Googlefan,
We appreciate you for sharing your feedback with us. We're sorry to hear that you're having trouble setting up your Nest Wifi mesh system and that you didn’t get the support you needed from us.
We also recommend to make sure you have all setup requirements ready by checking the following:
- Google Nest Wifi router - Any additional Wifi devices you would like to add (Google Nest Wifi points, Google Wifi points, or Google Nest Wifi router). This is optional to expand coverage. - A Google Account - One of the following mobile devices: - An Android phone running Android 5.0 and higher. - An Android tablet running Android 6.0 and higher. - An iPhone or iPad with iOS 12.0 or later - The latest version of the Google Home app available on Android or iOS - Internet service with a modem: Some ISPs use VLAN tagging. You may need additional equipment for Google Wifi to work. Learn how to set up your network with an ISP that uses VLAN tagging.

Hi ThomasM, thanks for reaching out. We're sorry for the shortfall in providing you with your support needs. We understand how frustrating this experience may have been for you.
Nest Wifi works with most ISPs, including AT&T Uverse. If you're using a modem/router combo, we recommend setting it up in bridge mode and disabling its Wi-Fi functionality. This will avoid any network issues caused by both your combo and Nest Wifi Router, broadcasting the same SSID and password. You may then connect your Nest Wifi Router to your modem using an Ethernet cable, and then connect your Nest Wifi Points to your Nest Wifi Router wirelessly.
If you're willing to try, here are some steps that might prove to be helpful as well: - Try setting up the Nest Wifi by changing the WAN settings from static to DHCP on the Google Home app. To change: Open the Google Home app > Tap Wi-Fi and then Settings > and then Advanced Networking > Tap WAN > Choose DHCP > Make any changes, then tap Save. - Then, in the AT&T UVerse Gateway’s firewall settings, choose the Google Nest Wifi and set it in DMZplus mode. - In the LAN settings on the AT&T Uverse Gateway, change the IP Address Allocation from Private to Public. - Lastly, do a sequential reboot on both AT&T Uverse Gateway and Google Nest Wifi to start accessing the internet.
If the issue persists, please consider contacting our support team once more. We may need to escalate your issue to our higher level support team and see how we can help you best: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp

Hi Gocsteve,
Thanks for your feedback to let us know about your issue with your Nest Wifi's coverage. We know it can be frustrating when you can't get the Wi-Fi coverage you need.
Ideally, each Nest Wifi router is capable of covering up to 2,200 sqft. and each Nest Wifi point up to 1,600 sqft. unless your Wi-Fi is getting obstructed by objects like walls and furniture. We recommend placing your Nest Wifi router and points on a higher place like a shelf which can help broadcast signals in a more effective way. As a general rule, Nest Wifi points work best when they’re no more than two rooms away from each other.

Hi Smit22192, thanks for posting your feedback. We regret to hear that you’re having connectivity issues with your Nest Wifi.
Wi-Fi signal coverage may be affected by different factors and we recommend trying out some tips below to improve your connection. - As a general rule, points work best when they’re no more than two rooms away from each other. For example, if the far end of your house has weak Wi-Fi, don’t put a Wifi point in that exact spot. Instead, put it part way in that direction. Try to place it in an elevated position like on a shelf. - Building materials and other objects located between your Nest Wifi Points and mobile devices may slow your connection. If possible, try to use your device within a clear line of sight to your primary and secondary Points. - There could be signal interference due to traffic on your Wi-Fi network, on your neighbors' Wi-Fi networks, or from other sources like microwaves or baby monitors.
If you'd like us to take a look at the issue, feel free to contact our support team so we can help you further. You can visit our help page using this link: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp

A Top-Notch Mesh Wi-Fi Solution
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I’ve used many different networking products over the years at home. The list is too lengthy to recall, but it includes pretty much all major manufacturers. In spite of claims that their networking solutions can cover a house of our size, I’ve always found areas where coverage was terrible. I’ve installed network range extenders, Powerline devices and other products, all to no avail.
In 2018, I decided to bite the bullet and purchase a Mesh solution. I chose Google’s Wi-Fi. It’s now just short of two years since I installed it, and it has continued to be remarkably good. I purchased the 3-unit solution and spread them evenly throughout the house. No dead-spots at all. It even allowed me to reach my shed that sits more than 60 feet from the house.
And here I am two years later upgrading to the newest Google Mesh solution – the Nest Wi-Fi. I want to clarify, however, that my getting the Nest Wi-Fi was in no way the result of problems with the Google Wi-Fi. It’s remains a great product. I got the Nest Wi-Fi because the opportunity presented itself and no other reason.
The Nest Wi-Fi pack I received comes with two units: a Router and what they call a Wi-Fi Point. I could have just added these two new units into my existing Google Wi-Fi setup, which would have kept a Google Wi-Fi unit as the router, but that was not what I wanted. With the new Nest Wi-Fi router offering much greater throughput, I wanted the Nest Wi-Fi router to be my network’s formal router – not just a node on a Google Wi-Fi network, which you can do.
With that as my target solution, here are the steps I undertook:
• Use the Google Wi-Fi app and to run the option to blow away
the existing network configuration. This is necessary if you plan
to port over old Google Wi-Fi units to the new setup. If you
don’t plan on doing that then just turn them off and unplug them.
• I plugged the Nest Wi-Fi router into my provider’s modem and
its power cable into a receptacle.
• I used the Google Home app to add the Nest router as a new
device and to create a new network – although named the
same as my original network.
• Once done, I used Google Home to add the new Nest Wi-Fi
Point, followed then by adding the older Google Wi-Fi Points.
The above steps only took about 15 minutes to complete. I now have a network that consists of the Nest Router as my main router, the Nest Wi-Fi Point, and two of the three original Google Wi-Fi units.
Thus far it has worked great!
For those of you who want to spend the time documenting and naming devices in the new Nest Mesh, I recommend making note of all your existing devices and their IP addresses and MAC addresses, and I’ll explain that in a moment. When I created the new Nest Mesh network, I named it the same as my older Google Wi-Fi network. And by keeping the password the same, all the devices on my network immediately joined the new network. I didn’t have to go to each device to individually link them to the new network.
The problem I ran into was with my printers. All my desktops, laptops, and smartphones run software that need to know how the IP location of the printers. On the old network, for example, my Epson printer was at location xxx.xxx.xxx.197. On the new network, which was set up with DHCP turned on, that same printer was found at location xxx.xxx.xxx.217. In trying to print to the Epson, my print jobs failed because there was no printer at the old location. As a result, I had to determine which device was which on the new Nest Mesh. Fortunately, the Nest Mesh provided the printer’s name, thus making it easy to spot.
I mentioned above that you might was to document your device MAC addresses before shutting down your old network. That’s because once the new network was up and running, I had a number of “Unknown Devices” showing. Selecting each one, all you know is each device’s IP address and its MAC address. For me, I want to know what these devices are in the event I have a problem I need to address. Full disclosure, I did not document MAC addresses before shutting down my old network and spent a good bit of time trying to identify these devices.
If I had to be critical about something, however, it would be the Google Home app’s Wi-Fi interface. I use Google Home all the time, yet I had to hunt through the app to find where options were located. By contrast, I thought the older Google Wi-Fi app was more intuitive.
Another issue with the lack of Ethernet ports on the Nest Wi-Fi Points. The Nest Wi-Fi Router had an Ethernet port, but not its accompanying Point. These Ethernet port come in handy when you have a device nearby that doesn’t support Wi-Fi but does support Ethernet. Or if you have a number of non-Wi-Fi devices in a common area that could be connected to the Mesh by way of a port concentrator. Since the older Google Wi-Fi units all had Ethernet ports, it seems like a step backwards not having them in the new Nest Wi-Fi Point units.
On the plus side, the Nest Wi-Fi also offers the following:
• It has a Guest option for allowing visiting guests access to your
network
• Each Nest Wi-Fi Point comes with an LED ring at the bottom to
illuminate the surrounding area (very handy at night)
• The Nest Wi-Fi Points includes a speaker that performs like a
Google mini and responds to Okay Google commands
• The Nest Wi-FI operating system includes a Family option that lets you pause internet access and create Wi-Fi access schedules for selected network users
While there might be other comparable Mesh solutions on the market, I can say without pause that the Nest Wi-Fi continues to be a top-notch solution for us.
