Expected Wifi Speeds are just not there

We have fiber internet with speeds through our isp modem of 1000mbps+ with wifi speeds of 400-500mbps but have a few dead spots in the house. I purchased the sytems with intentions on getting atleast 400mbps but Have only maxed at 120mbps over wifi. From all of the reviews I have read and different youtube videos you will only get up to 180-200 max mbps with this, which may be great for some. For the price I think the system could be better.

Hi Datl, thanks for sharing the details of your review about the Nest Wifi, and we’re sorry to hear that you’re not getting the speeds that you expected.

We suggest checking the placement of your Wi-Fi router and points, which are important to have reliable Wi-Fi throughout your home. As a general rule, points work best when they’re no more than two rooms away from each other. If the far end of your house has weak Wi-Fi, don’t put a Wifi point in that exact spot. Instead, put it part way in that direction. Try to place it in an elevated position like on a shelf. It may be helpful to try the following steps:
      - Repositioning the points to avoid obstructions like walls, doors, and aquariums can improve performance.
      - Make sure all unused devices are off and not draining bandwidth with large downloads.
      - Check for possible sources of interference such as microwave ovens, refrigerators or other equipment.
      - Restart your network.

If the speed issue persists, we recommend reaching out to us and we’d be happy to help and guide you through troubleshooting and isolation, here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

After using a few months having issues and the support is horrible. We have 400 to 600 gb service and last few weeks we were blaming provider like google does. Well after a tech came out and showed me their modem was sending out just under 500 gigs to Google router and after google router it was sending out 90. Spent last two hours trying to resolve issue and the support is junk. Buy something better with good support.

      Hi chip,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Sorry about the connection issue you have with your Nest Wifi and your poor experience with our support team. This is not the kind of experience we want to leave you with.

There are many reasons why your internet connection drops or might appear slow. Incorrect setups, distance of router and points and their placements and presence of a double NAT are some of the possible reasons.

Even though you may have already contacted our support team, we're hoping you will give us another opportunity to help you with the issue to improve your experience. Please feel free to reach out to us here: https://support.google.com/wifi/contactflow Nest

Not as simple as it seems. Buyer Beware!!

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Please be aware that setup may not be as simple as advertised and that the support from google is severely lacking and the product is such that working through the settings yourself is impossible. I purchased the google Nest Wifi router and point package. It purports to be simply plug and play. This is not necessarily true. I plugged it in and managed to get the router working without fuss. Unfortunately this is where the positive experience ends. After spending a few hours turning power points on and off, disconnecting and reconnecting cables and running factory resets as recommended by the google home app help function I requested help on the google support site. It wouldn't let me request a callback or a direct chat continually telling me there was an error in my form, so I resorted to facebook chat. After again running a number of routine resets and some diagnostic checks, google support suggested I contact my ISP to setup my ISP supplied wireless router (typical of all Australian ISP's) into bridge mode to ensure the two wireless networks were not interfering with each other. I did and for the 100th time tried to connect the wireless point with no luck. I am taking it back to JB Hifi today to exchange for a different, hopefully functional and easy to use product.

Worked ok for a while and then it started dropping the points or the points would be a weak signal despite our router having a strong signal so it wasn't our internet provider. We did every single thing that google suggested to fix the issue. Nothing worked and we found a lot of others online with the same issues. There are other mesh systems that are highly rated but much less expensive. Very disappointing.

      Hi Apb25,

Thanks for letting us know of the signal issue you’re experiencing with the Nest Wifi. We know how frustrating that can be but we appreciate your patience and efforts in performing the troubleshooting steps to fix it.

Factors like thick walls, mirrors, windows and even signals from other wireless devices may cause interference that will shorten the distance Nest Wifi router can cover. You may need to shorten the distance between your Nest Wifi Router and Nest Wifi Points to get a better signal coverage.

We care about your experience with our products. If bringing them closer doesn't fix the issue, then we may need to have a look at it in order for us to isolate the problem and do our best to help. You can always contact us whenever you visit the Nest Wifi support page here: https://support.google.com/wifi/gethelp Nest

I spent way too much money on google's wifi, at first it worked fine, but over the long haul, connectivity was really poor. After spending 8 hours with the technical people (who are not bad and really tried to help), I had to throw $500 worth of Google crap away. I would not recommend every buying google's products they are poorly made.

    DO NOT BUY!!!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

DO NOT BUY THIS!!! I purchased the two-router pack, supposedly covering 4000 sq ft. After spending 30 minutes or more with a Google Tech going through sequences not in the setup instructions, we were able to get the mesh network to work. Then, two days later, the wireless (point) router went offline and was no longer recognized. I went through all the initial setup instructions, including connecting the 2nd router to the main router by ethernet, and then after connecting, moving it to where I wanted it – about 30-40 ft away from main router – where it worked before. My iPhone shows 3-4 bars in that location, but the 2nd router couldn’t connect. So, I called Google Technical Support again. During the session, we went through all the original setup instructions, with the additional step of hard rebooting 2nd router. After about 2 hours of circling through the same exact troubleshooting procedures, nothing worked, Then, the Google Tech started blaming my Apple iPhone X and my Spectrum internet provider. He actually wanted me to call Spectrum Tech Support and report the problem, even though I have had zero problems with Spectrum. When I refused, he accused me of refusing to follow his instructions – that’s when I hung-upon him. DO NOT BUY THIS!!!

This is the worst router I have ever owned

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this router and started having issues with it about 6 months in. The internet drops at the access point about 3 or 4 times a week. After talking with support 3 - 4 times a week they are unable to help me and never get back to me after they escalate the issue. After a year of regularly troubleshooting this and hoping that an engineer would look at logs I sent to them they never got back to me. They eventually agreed to replace the system after almost 2 years of issues and then told me that my product was out of warranty even though I had originally reached out while still under warranty. Do not buy this router or anything google it is not reliable at all. My Nest hub screen went out just after the warranty expired and the remote for my google TV needs to be replaced for the second time due to buttons going out.

Beware of this product. I have had google wifi and nest wifi devices covering my whole house for years carefree. Google made a recent change and it has been a nightmare since. The internet keeps dropping and the points go offline constantly. After hours online with google tech support they finally said i need to contact verizon and have my fios router reprogramed into bridge mode. I did that and it still is horrible. If you are thinking of purchasing this, google "nest wifi dropping internet" first and see all the people giving up on google wifi and buying different mesh systems.

    google wifi router/nest doesn't work

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have a google wifi router and two google nests. My internet service is At&T fiber optic at 300+mbps. I set up the router on the second floor, connected with the AT&E gateway through an ethernet cable. I have one Google Nest on the second floor and one downstair. Everywhere on the second floor, I am getting about 300mbps wifi performance. BUT, downstairs, it has been consistently and frustratingly poor in performance. It fluctuates from 5mbps to 100mbps, for reasons that I have been trying to find out with the tech support from Google, but with no success so far. We have been at it for about 6 months now an nobody is replying my emails.

      Hi there,

Thanks for letting us know of the connectivity issue for your Nest Wifi. We´re truly sorry for falling short on your support needs. We can only imagine how frustrating the experience may have been for you.

If you´re willing to try, we recommend trying out some steps below that may be helpful if you haven't tried them out before:
      - Check for possible sources of interference such as building materials and other objects located between your router and Wi-Fi points or between your Wi-Fi points and mobile devices may slow your connection. Or signal interference due to traffic on your Wi-Fi network, on your neighbors' Wi-Fi networks, or from other sources like microwaves or baby monitors. If possible, try to use your device within a clear line of sight to your router or point.
      - Check the distance of your Nest Wifi Point, located downstairs, from the Nest Wifi Router. Ideally, both Nest Wifi Router and Nest Wifi Point should not be farther than 2 rooms away from each other.

Other than our email support, we also have additional contact channels like chat, as well as our community and other social media platforms. We're hoping you will give us a chance to improve your experience. Please feel free to contact our support team again here: https://support.google.com/wifi/gethelp Nest

    Parental Controls DO NOT WORK!!!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The devices themselves work great and are a breeze to setup. What parents especially should be aware of is that the Parental Controls are easily bypassed. All new iOS and Android devices have MAC address randomization on them so each time they connect to the wifi network they show up as a new device. The only way to control access and usage times on Google WiFi is by manually adding devices to a group. But since these iOS and Android devices show up as a new device each time you would have to manually login and add them to a group daily. Until this is solved DO NOT rely on these to protect your kids.

I have had Nest Wifi since it was released. My house is firmly in the Google ecosystem with several Google Home/Nest units and other Google-branded devices. However, since the release of the 12871.57.12 update, my download speeds have plummeted from ~350 mbps to ~80 mbps on every device. Google support has not been helpful with troubleshooting or suggestions. Factor in the frequent dropped connections to mesh points and disconnects of devices, please please please steer clear of Nest Wifi.

Not for Large Smart Homes or Advanced Users

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Starts dropping connections after 60 devices. If you have a large smart home, you will be surprised how quickly you get to 60+ devices. We have 75+ devices. Had to replace with a Linksys system that supports 120+ devices. Also you can't separate the 2.4 & 5.0 bands which makes it impossible to connect some older IoT devices. No web interface, no advanced network settings. This system is for smaller "dumb" homes only. Great for your grandparents, otherwise stay away.

One of the worst purchases i've made. Set it up (app took way too long to set up wifi ) and the wifi was working fine. 5 minutes later the wifi stops working, and I was able to connect but the internet would not work (pointless to even connect to). Attempted to trouble shoot and all of a sudden the device couldn't even be found. Tried to troubleshoot that on top of the wifi. Customer service wasn't available to help, so I was left with no other option but to return it. Overall, wouldn't recommend.

I am pretty tech savvy, having built PCs since I was a kid. have tried using this system with two ISPs. CenturyLink routers are incompatible with this. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

If you have any devices in your home that require 2.4G, then look away from this. There is no real separation between the two. Google says that the device will just do the right thing but I can tell you that is not true. Some devices, especially IoT or smart appliances will not connect to it. I tried to have them connect to the same credentials, same settings, but on a "dummer" router with 5G disabled, and it worked perfectly.

Hi HaoDaoBao, thanks for sharing your feedback with us. We´re sorry to hear Nest Wifi didn´t meet your expectations.

Your Nest Wifi keeps it simple by automatically choosing the band that gives you the best Wi-Fi. It uses the same name for both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. Both radio bands are active simultaneously. Based on the device capabilities, Nest Wifi will attempt to select the band that will deliver the best performance for each of your device. Devices that support only the 2.4 GHz band (an older phone, for example), will automatically connect to the 2.4 GHz band. Most dual band devices that support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz will automatically pick a band based on different factors like signal strength and guidance from the mesh Wi-Fi system.

If you will allow us, we may need to have a closer look at the issue and figure out what may be causing it. Please reach out to our support team for further troubleshooting and isolation here: https://support.google.com/wifi/gethelp Nest

      Hi Grant,

Thanks for letting us know of your experience with Nest Wifi. We understand that it can be upsetting when your device doesn’t meet your expectations and we’re here to help improve your experience.

The connectivity issue may be related to a few reasons and if you're willing, we recommend trying out some troubleshooting steps below that might be helpful:
      - Home layout: Building materials and other objects located between your router and Wi-Fi points or between your Wi-Fi points and mobile devices may slow your connection. If possible, try to use your device within a clear line of sight to your router or point.
      - Check congestion: There could be congestion on your Wi-Fi network if you have many connected devices to the network. All these devices consume a portion of your available Wi-Fi bandwidth. You can try relieving the network by disconnecting some of the devices to see if this would increase the Wi-Fi speed for the device you’re using.

If the issue continues even after restarting or resetting your modem, then we may need to have a better look at what may be causing it.

Your Nest Wifi comes with a 1-year limited manufacturer warranty starting from the date of original purchase. We'd be more than happy to provide you with your support needs by visiting our support page here: https://support.google.com/wifi/contactflow Nest
