This version of EA's NHL game is pretty awesome. The feel of controlling the players is very fluid and it has all the bells and whistles of being able to start a franchise/create a team, etc.

This is a great entry in the NHL series, and the first worthwhile one for this generation of consoles. The presentation, graphics, and controls are all solid, and you really feel like you're playing a hockey game. There are still some quirks that are annoying to deal with, however. There are times when the AI will hold the puck in the zone for what seems like forever, missing bodies with shots and seemingly unable to have the puck stolen from them. There are also times where an opposing skater will exactly mirror the puck handler, giving you no outlet to either skate away or make a pass. Generally the game is pretty fair, however. Final Recommendation: It's a huge improvement over the atrocity that was NHL 15, and you'll be playing it all winter. The problems are there but they're not gamebreaking. Buy it.

    It's in the details

As a long-time NHL series aficionado, there have been features over the years that have become a "wish list" of sorts. I'm glad to see that this year's entry to the series has marked a few more off the list. At face value, this is a similar game to the others in recent memory. The controls are essentially the same, the camera views, the settings, etc. all have a familiar vibe. The difference in this game, and what makes it a standout, is in the details. This game feels more like a hockey game I'd watch on TV than in previous years. While they were on-board last year, Doc and Edzo doing commentary gives me that familiar national broadcast feel that I get watching a playoff game on NBC. They also give you the NBC logo and the signature music of NHL on NBC. You even get Wedensday Night Rivalry games presented differently. It's a nice, subtle touch . You can grow a playoff beard. That's right; grow. You can determine your start length and max length and, as you advance, you'll see the progression of growth. While an outsider might see this as minor, the playoff beard is one of the most celebrated parts of hockey culture and its inclusion in the game is a heartwarming treat. The goal horns have been updated and are the best they've been in years. I used to cringe hearing the misrepresentation of the majority of teams' goal horns in years past, and every year I would hope beyond hope that this would be corrected. While being able to define your own in prior years' games helped a little, it was off-putting to have to do that to get right something so important to a team's fans that should have been right in the first place. This year though, they are very well-done. While I haven't audited every team, the ones I've heard all seem spot-on. Many of the signature goal songs particular teams use are included, which is fantastic. Touches like post-whistle scrums, fighting mid-play after a big hit, and the goal hug all help the feel of the game seem closer to the real thing. The Be A Pro mode has improved somewhat with coaching interactions. Now, you're given objectives to accomplish to earn extra XP and better grades. Better still, you're given an overlay above your skater that shows you how to accomplish certain tasks. This is incredibly handy when tasked with something like a specialty deke that you might not know how to pull off, otherwise. There are still flaws, however. There are certain shots that you can take from the high areas that seem to always go in, no matter the goalie or situation. Should you call for a pass, but your teammate has already started to pass to you, you'll find yourself simply passing straight ahead of you right off the touch, most times resulting in a turnover or icing. In a particularly egregious oversight, if you win the Stanley Cup in Be A Pro, your created player doesn't get passed the Cup (unless he's been named captain or is the goalie). This one should be automatic. To not see your player's work get paid off with getting to touch the Cup is very disappointing. All in all, this is a great upgrade over last year's entry. Many things have been improved that create a better game feel, and in a sports game, that is vital. There are still things that need to be addressed, but overall you won't be disappointed if you're a fan of this sport.

Very realistic. It's cool how the pre game commentary is real footage. It's not the easiest to play, there is a learning curve associated with it.

NHL 15 was a train wreck on next-gen systems. It lacked basic features/modes and didn't play particularly well. I"m happy to say that NHL 16 improves on 15 in just about every way. Even the menus, which were very laggy in 15, are improved. They're still somewhat laggy, but not as bad as before. Graphics are nice, commentary is much improved and the on-rink player physics feel good. If you're a hockey fan, this is a good solid game...finally.

So far it seems easier to score; like the goalies have been nerfed a bit. For experienced players be sure to customize to your liking as the in game tutorials seems a bit much at times. For anyone who is brand new to the franchise the in game help makes it easier to acclimate oneself to the game. Overall a good solid hockey game.

I skipped out on NHL 15 coming from 14 after hearing how stripped it was of features. Did end up renting 15 just to try it out, but didn't feel a big jump from 14. NHL 16 fits the bill with lots of features and top solid gameplay, as it has been for the last few years. Can't go wrong!

Sadly, I was a diehard fan of this series. I played thousands of games online through EASHL and Drop-in over a 4 year stretch. I loved it. Then NHL 15 happened and they removed my beloved game mode from next gen consoles. I grumbled but patiently waited for it to return... EA released a bare-bones version. Sure, I can have a beard now. And so many new faces to choose from for my player. But that's where the customization ends. Want a little more speed for your "Playmaker"? Sorry but every playmaker has the same speed as the next playmaker. Same goes for every "class." Gone is the ability to tool with a player class and make it a little how you want it to be. Everyone has to play with the same set attributes. They also introduced "leveling up." Nothing levels up. A number next to your name changes. That's all. Level 1 levels up to level 2. Bragging rights? You play more games than the next person. Congrats! I played roughly 20 games online. Puck control is off the charts. Anyone can weave through a crowd like Gretzky. Even if you manage to bump a player off of the puck, they'll get it right back as your player stares at the puck without controlling it. Passing is a roller coaster of emotions. The AI built in this game has set the AI population back 100 years. I give it a fair grade because it is pretty and they added a lot of presentation to it. Sadly, no one buys a hockey game for those reasons and that is why I will not be playing this year's version any more.

If you've been a fan of the NHL series, you're going to love this year's game! I've been buying NHL since '09, and the gameplay is smooth as ever. The PS4 lacked some features last year, but they are all back, and I can't stop playing the EA Hockey League!

After Last years NHL15 for PS4, I personally boycotted all EA games for an entire year, and vowed to not buy another EA Product until they fixed my favorite sports video game series. EA has done a good job of putting most of the existing features back in this game. The excessive advertisements, and Pay to Win features of console games NEED to go, and until they will I will continue to boycott EA products, or stop charging me $60 for a game that your going to charge me $100's of dollars in micro transactions to stay at the top.

I purchased and played NHL 15 despite the glaring lack of features. This year's offering brings back all the old features that were stripped away while maintaining the solid core hockey experience. The individual arenas and goal horns really help make each of the arenas feel unique. Finally including the United Center (*in the day 1 patch) is a tremendous bonus for Blackhawks fans. They did a great job with the arenas. Overall, I don't really have any serious complaints about the game. They still do not call enough penalties during most games, but hopefully they will fix that one year. If you passed on NHL 15, you are safe to give this year's game a try. It has a lot to offer.

I owned NHL 12 and enjoyed every minute of it....but it was very arcade based. You could skate end to end and score goals easily from above the circle nearly every time. I also purchased NHL 14 but I believe EA went too far to slow the game down. Playing single player or season, I would incur far too many game stoppages due to off sides or cheap boarding calls. NHL 16 has been a perfect mix between the two games. The graphics are far superior to NHL 15. I also love the Hockey Ultimate team game play. Earning new "card packs" with no namers and your favorite all stars and then being able to use them to play against friends or others online has been great.

I like to play with the old 98 4 button controls. This has it as a choice. Only prob is rookie is too easy and pro is too hard. Wish you could adjust just the defence or just the offense.

This new version of NHL is a major step up from last years trainwreck. The gameplay feels great and much more realistic. The new on ice trainer feature is great for people new to the series as it gives feedback on how you are playing and suggests ways to improve your game. Graphics look great and the inclusion of many minor details in the stadiums, such as mascots running around and authentic sounding goal horns, all add to the overall atmosphere during gameplay. If you are an NHL diehard or just a casual looking to get in to hockey I would highly recommend this game.
