Would not be my first choice
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this 2 weeks ago. When I first set it up it worked, and worked as it claims. Then 4 days after it wont connect to push notification. Having the system notify you when there's motion detected when your not home is the whole idea. I have tried uninstalling and then reinstalling, but the same thing. I read the reviews on this product and it sounded good. Now that I'm having troubles I'm finding a lot more bad reviews. I wish Id did a little more research before buying this product. My advise, if your looking for security cameras Night owl would not be my first choice!!!!!

Likewise, have you tested your internet speed. Our systems, as do all security systems, have certain compatibility criteria. Often times our customers who are having difficulty with remote viewing are having such because of their internet speed. We recommend a 2.5 Mbps upload and download speed. You can test your internet connection speed at www.speedtest.net. I would strongly recommend you try our tech support. They are 24/7 and will be happy to assist. Awesome system for the price

Quality is amazing, more than I ever expected, so good in fact I ordered 4 additional cameras to complete the system. Was on sale when I purchased , which made it even more of a bargain! Don't pass this system up, it's worth the money.

Excellent quality for the price

Granted, the screws supplied to mount the cameras left something to be desired but that was a very minor problem. The hardest part of installation was crawling under my mobile home (no attics) and running the cables up through the floor. Everything else went exactly as described in the easily understood instructions. The quality of the 720p video is excellent. Night vision is great, very detailed. Playback is as easy as one could want. I highly recommend Night Owl to anyone who wants extra security.

Horrible qualitly

Just needed a simple system to watch my front porch and cars because of a few break ins in the neighborhood. I got out of the box started installing it. No camera's would work. Chatted with customer support told me the power splitter was bad. To submit an email and they'd send one out. After that I discover a camera cord is bad as well. Submit online. They tell me to call. I call in and after 45 min on hold they are no help. This is going straight back to best buy for another system.

owned for 4 mo. - great system!

The mobile app for Android is wonderful and is very responsive. The video clarity is really good and the motion recording works very well. Documentation was easy to follow; Night Owl puts in the effort to ensure a good customer experience. I can't say how the cameras would work outdoors as I'm forced to use them indoors but I'm sure they handle the elements without issue. The internal hard drive noise can become noticeable during periods of heavy recording but it's not annoying or distracting. I really wish the DVR could stream video to web browsers other than Internet Explorer; if using IE, you are forced to use an antiquated ActiveX plugin. The mobile app is much better for remote viewing. It's still early to tell if the system will fail or have issues, but so far, so good! I'm really happy with this system. I've owned other systems from other brands and this has been the best.

Camera system seems to work great

I never knew it was so easy to pull up the videos of any date and time for review. They can be speeded up or slowed down for a closer review. I really am liking the system. The cameras have good resolution but the viewing angle is not the 70 degree they advertise. Mine are closer to 60 deg. I plan to find at least one more camera that has a wider angle for my main overall front yard camera. You might as well order longer wires for the cameras or get some Cat5 cable which is easier to run.

No Push notifications,app drains battery in 20 min
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Dvr works great,cameras record really clear during the day, at night they record ok,but really disappointed with the knight owl hd app and customer care wait time. Only reason i bought this system was because they advertised push notifications through their app, after been unable to set up the motion alerts I called hem up and after 35 minutes of wait time finally i was conected to a representative, he helped me set up the email alerts and told me that push notifications stopped working more then a month ago. Motion Email alerts take 3 to 5 mins to be received,but i wanted push notifications because those are received instantly,i want to be able to monitor motion as it is happening and not 5 minutes later when the intruder might be gone, so for this reason and because app drains battery in like 20 mins even when app is just running in the background. I WILL BE TAKING THIS SYSTEM BACK TO BEST BUY TOMORROW MORNING and buy the hd swann system insted.

Posted .Good Afternoon. I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble getting your motion activated alerts set. Yes, the HD App, if left running continuously will drain your battery as any remote viewing application will. However, when motion activated alerts are set all you have to do is swipe them on your screen and quickly view the video. This does not drain your battery. Running the App for lengthy periods of time will though. If you need assistance getting your motion activated alerts set, please email [email protected] (to the attn: Customer Service) and you will be provided assistance. Currently, the wait time for our technical support team is longer than usual. The holidays are our busiest time of year. Thanks for choosing Night Owl.

Although, there was an issue with one of the cameras in which I contacted Night-Owl Customer Service/Support via their website. With no hassles, they were quick to respond and shipped me a free new replacement camera immediately.

easy set up
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.got my system real fast from Best Buy, took a few hours to run cables and had the cameras up and running in about 6 hrs, not real fond of installing this kind of stuff but when a local guy wanted $2200.00 to do it, you know the drill, all went well and would tell anyone to give it a shot if you have the time, so far so good, Thanks for making it easy

Decent inexpensive hardware, HORRIBLE software

The software s u c k s big time though. Not long after getting the system I needed to get a section of video off the system to help resolve a shoplifting situation in my store. Very challenging! Just getting the file downloaded is very non-intuitive. The system does export a file, but good luck using that file anywhere. It claims it's standard H264, but it cannot be recognized by anything, even VLC. Eventually after a few (!) calls to tech support I got someone who knew of a converter program that would let me convert the "standard" export format to something I could bring into a video editor. Two other techs knew nothing about this app, so not only are they super challenged on the technical front, but they don't share info between their phone people. That app wasn't available on their downloads section, I could only get it via a DropBox link the tech sent me. So professional! The app is PC only. I'm a mac user, thankfully I have access to a PC, I was eventually able to get the video converted. What a ridiculous hassle though. The converter app works fine, but why is that even required?! I write software, that app has the look of something someone put together in an afternoon. No doubt someone had a developer throw it together due to complaints from callers like me. I'm selecting "yes" to will I recommend the product. But that yes is with a VERY qualified warning about the frustration you WILL experience using the software. I suspect that video systems that aren't c r a p cost much more, so I guess I got a deal? Whatever, be prepared to put in time and accepting shortcomings if you take the leap with this product.

DVR wouldn't power on after 15 months
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.To start this out, I'm basing my 1 star review on the fact that the system is obviously useless without power... Setting the system up and accessing the DVR was very easy. I usually keep my Night Owl app open on my computer at work all day so I can see whats going on all the time at my house. Yesterday it wouldn't connect so I had to troubleshoot the issue when I got home. The system was plugged into a UPS surge protector with other devices like my Router and Switch plugged into the same Surge strip. Everything was getting power except for the Night Owl DVR. I tested the power cord to another device and it worked so I knew it wasn't the cord or Jack. It appears the DVR's power adapter within has failed and couldn't had been from lightning because it was on a surge strip. I reached out to Night Owl support and opened a ticket and because its been over a year, they don't want to fix their system. I feel like this is something that should be warrantied a little longer than a year because of it being a security system and the fact its not cheap. Maybe at least 3 years from purchased date.. $100 a year seems like an average cost to justify it breaking and not having a warranty in 3 years. This is ridiculous to me because I spent $350 on a system I thought was going to outperform my P.O.S Zmodo DVR which even after 6 years still works and just became my back up DVR.. Pretty sad. I can understand if a camera goes out, but when the whole system doesn't work then its completely useless... Good Job Night owl, not only have I referred people to use your product, I will make sure they stay away from your product too.

You have mentioned a couple of issues i would like to briefly address, the first being our warranty. Night Owl offers a 1 Year Manufacturer's Warranty for all of our products. However, upon purchase, you have the option to purchase an extended warranty plan for the product through Best Buy. This extended product replacement warranty was offered through Geek Squad for an additional fee. The second issue i would like to address is your 3rd party UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). We are not able to offer any assurances outside of the products that we sell. There are a number of issues that can be caused when a power outage occurs. I would like to arrange an advanced tech support call to further troubleshoot your issue. Again, we apologize for the experience you are having and look forward to finding a solution.

FIRE HAZARD- DO NOT BUY
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had my system for almost a year before I noticed issues starting to happen. I am not sure if it was software upgrades or what, but over time things just got worse and worse, to the point of the whole system failing. I recently had the issue of my cameras clicking repeatedly, and the image going in and out. So I went to check the DVR, and it was so hot that it burnt me. So I disconnected everything, and even the plug was really over heated. I called tech support, and their instruction was to plug it back in and see if it gets that hot again, and call them back. I did not do this! Why would I risk burning my house down? So I called back the next day and a new tech confirmed they should have never told me to plug it back in. That is was crazy for him to tell me that. Since my DVR is out of warranty, they said you can just buy a new one. But after this one nearly caught my house on fire, I will not be purchasing another DVR from Night Owl. Seems like they would want the malfunctioned product back before something worse happens to another customer. WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! FIRE HAZARD! Please check your DVRS and make sure they are not running super hot!

You get what you paid for.

Only headaches. I called to program this on my mac and they did not know what to do. The cables are cheap, had to call a friend of mine who does surveillance system himself and he told me there is not much he can do,we called customer service and they did not help at all. The guy did not know what to do. We bought Ethernet cable but still not the best system, We called to add another camera from another company which it was a great camera and they told me only their camera works. Already one of the channels don't work. The camera on my back yard is 24/7 black and white. Dont know why. Lot of times I cant use my iPhone when Im away to see my home. Soon I'm getting another system with my friend and use this one for minor surveillance.

Poor instructions. Forget 24/7 tech support!

Videos do not include trouble shooting. My password allows access to my account, but not my cameras. I have call tech support many times and they are not there. 24/7 tech support is simply untrue. I regret purchasing this system because of poor support. Best Buy should tell people.

Worked at first
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Purchased this camera set in October was happy with product at first come December, 4 of the cameras night vision went fuzzy and hard to see no longer had the quality picture at night I had before, called Tech support and left a voice mail no returned call, called back next day waited on hold for a hour, finally was able to talk to tier 1 support explained what was going on and sent in pictures tier 1said they did not know what happened or why I was having the issue and said that tier 2 would call me back in 24 to 48 hours never received a call back. Called back waited on hold never spoke with anyone again, Very unhappy will never buy again.
