This is a movie I never heard anything about but placed my bet on the actors in it!! I skipped all the others companies offering this Movie with a #-D cover, Steel Book Case, and Yada, yada because I've found the bonus disc very often well worth it thru Best Buy

An Apocalypse Film With Depth

There's no shortage of apocalypse flicks, but this one focuses less on Name-Brand-sponsored survival gear, gratuitous amounts of arterial spray, and the undead; it focuses instead on the mental aspects one would probably experience if the world as we know it disappeared. Themes of loneliness, isolation, and remembrance of what was will pluck your heartstrings and, hopefully, make the viewer more grateful for what we have while we have it. Though not perfect, our world could be a lot worse.

he first hour of “Oblivion” is filled with Oscar-level special effects and set pieces, from the those relentless drones to Jack and Vika’s Skytower home base, which is so cool and provides such amazing views of the universe, even Tony Stark/Iron Man’s house would have Venus Envy. (Apologies.)
Jack and Vika know their memories have been wiped — the better to perform their task without asking too many questions — but like most sci-fi heroes who have undergone a memory erase, Jack occasionally dreams or has visions of another life, another woman, another … mission?
Working from a short story that was eventually fleshed into a graphic novel, director Joseph Kosinski (“Tron: Legacy”) has created a terrific-looking futuristic world. Claudio Miranda follows his Oscar-winning work on “Life of Pi” with another stunning visual feast of digital cinematography and visual effects that almost never feel tacked-on or “thin” or herky-jerky. It’s a visually arresting movie.
But as the plot layers are peeled back, and we’re given one answer after another, “Oblivion” actually becomes less interesting. A few twists are pretty nifty; you can see others coming light-years away. And the biggest payoff of all carries a lightweight emotional punch precisely because we’ve been told too much, so it comes off as vaguely creepy instead of deeply romantic.
Even though Cruise has gone through these paces before, he’s rock-solid here. Leo and Freeman deliver the kind of crackling supporting work you’d expect from Oscar winners. Kurylenko (also in this week’s “To the Wonder”) is a real screen beauty. She tries hard.
Having seen “Oblivion” in the IMAX format, I encourage you to do the same. It doesn’t mean you’ll forgive the script flaws or you’ll miss the non-stop references to other, mostly better films — but it’s the best way to see a film that shoots first and worries about plot later.

Good SciFi, Great Video

I will refrain from getting into a long review of the story and focus more on the Blu-ray video of the movie, Oblivion. While some critics have panned the story, I felt that it was an engaging and a well told truly science fiction story. It has a clear human connection with imagery that is truly unlike other scifi movies.
As for the disc, it is simply a single disc and a digital HD streaming version. The disc had no issues and the video transfer seemed to me, flawless with no artifacts. The color pallet of the movie is a bit washed, in most scenes, intentionally, but some scenes the color popped.
In the audio department, that too, was very clear, clean and without any issues. The surround sound was effective in the various settings with dialogue always understandable. Even better, the music! The music is spot on and very enjoyable. It is even possible to just play the music only throughout the movie isolated from the rest of the sound. It's great!
Another aspect of the movie is that it is not gory. There is one brief scene where the main character is getting some first aid that may make a few a bit uneasy, but for the most part, any of the action is limited to vaporization, so no guts or blood everywhere as some movies seem to relish.
I highly recommend this movie if you like science fiction that isn't merely an action movie. It has a story that takes its time to unfold, but unfold it does. You feel the isolation and loneliness of the main characters. But enjoy the movie with a friend. It is a good story well told.

One of Cruise's better sci-fi roles. The visuals and sound warranted a 4K update. Overall the action is good as well as the story.

With varying degree, I enjoy most Tom cruise films. I know I'm in for a charismatic performance and a large production budget so I usually tag in to see how good Hollywood can be.
This film has some solid sci-fi ingredients: set in the future, man vs. aliens, human cloning (mild spoiler alert), dystopian earth, robots, etc. and it's all very slick but very quiet as earth is shown as a functioning earth. The setting and look of the film are cool enough to carry most viewers through act one with ease. Act II leads to the unveiling of act III that's loaded with enough Twilight Zoneish irony to create a mild eye roll.
Hollywood loves irony. Whereas I like it. But I really like villains as I believe they can make or break a story. Jaws, Alien, Star Wars - the villain drives the bus (even the film's title) and gives the story impact. Note: only one of those three films contains any irony. You never really get a sense of a villain in this story until act III when all of the irony cards are played so viewers get to have that a-ha moment - ala most episodes of The Twilight Zone.
