I bought this receiver after purchasing the ONKYO TX-RZ840 for my Home Theater. This product resides in my home office. It is the central node in my "Office Home Theater". I use it with a 55' 4K tv, and a 4K Blu-Ray Player. It delivers power to the Polk Audio speakers and 2 Sub Woofers. It delivers excellent sound quality when looking at a movie or listening to music. It has all of the features of its bigger brother, so setting it up was easy. Just follow the prompts from the receiver and you're up and running in a few minutes. This receiver also controls the TV so I have fewer remotes to keep up with.

I had replaced a 7.2 Yamaha Customer service was “not the best” I wanted a 9.2 setup This receiver was hard to find Best Buy was the only place that had it in stock The setup was relatively easy LG Oled C9 Sony Blu-ray player cablebox 9 speakers 1 sub There were a few problems Getting the cable remote to turn on Tv and cable box due to the Sony blu ray had to disable CEC on Blu ray Problem solved Receiver turned off due speaker wires touching It displayed speaker wires were problem With 9 speakers was it on receiver connections Or speaker connections Using banana plugs really helped Solve that part Found the faulty connection when checking the calibrations of each speaker Receiver turned off as it tested the faulty speaker I had read a lot of negative reviews about Onkyo customer service The above problems were solved by them I had called 4 different times and was connected immediately with a knowledgeable rep Who helped me quickly The receiver so far is great everything works I hope Onkyo’s reliability issues are in the past If using Arc make sure on Lg sound Out is HDMI and set to AUTO I am getting Atmos where available on Netflix So far so good

I needed a receiver that does 4K video switching. I already had a 7.2 receiver and was hoping to get into atmos at the same time (2 new benefits instead of just getting a overly complicated HDMI switcher). In my price range this was the only piece that would allow me to step up to Atmos without sacrificing my existing audio setup. I had an older receiver that was truly top of the line....9 years ago, which sounded absolutely incredible but no longer had the features I needed. So I grabbed this and a pair of the Sony Atmos speakers that sit on top of my front towers. Setup was.....lengthy. A half hour to perform the firmware upgrade before connecting anything. Afterwards I was finally able to get away from using the ARC from my tv (which had its own series of quirks and problems). I was able to pull out about a half dozen no longer necessary cables AND connect my turntable to my receiver for the first time in about 8 years (another sweet benefit). The room calibration was straightforward to anyone who’s done it before. It yielded results that were close but not quite accurate. Tweaked levels and distances a bit and was ready to go. All HDMI sources now worked great and CEC actually functioned as intended. I sadly used an unfamiliar Atmos encoded disc to test the system. I was totally underwhelmed and started to consider the option of returning it (after having just spent almost 3 1/2 hours setting it all up). I started to watch things I was more familiar with, and was even more critical of the sound. Surprisingly things sounded almost as good as I was accustomed to. From air playing music, to spinning vinyl, to Apple TV+ and Disney Plus programming everything sounded pretty darned good. The Atmos was decent (I think a better pair of speakers would result in a better performance) but not life changing. I am happy and can live with the audio performance because of the multitude on benefits the receiver brought to my home theater system. So many issues and idiosyncrasies were ironed out and alleviated. So while the audio is really good, I cannot call it great. But for me to the headaches that no longer exist plus the new Atmos sound really make me happy with the purchase.

I purchased the Onkyo TX NR797 because of its compelling price/feature ratio. It certainly offers a lot of features for a reasonably low price. THX Select Certification, Dolby Atmos, and IMAX Enhanced for $550 on sale? wow. The unit itself feels pretty sturdy. Its hefty enough and feels well made. It comes with a good amount of accessories and feels like a quality product. Not premium. But good quality. The setup was a snap, and pretty quick. Where i had some issues was with the HDMI switching (as many people have mentioned). I had lots of dropouts from my HDMI picture. Audio, after calibration - was overly harsh, and seemed to lack precision and punch. I was surrounded by an aggression of treble and bass, but found myself wanting more mid range and vocal presence for music and movies. Not a horrible unit - but if you are a critical listener or someone running 4K HDR and high bandwidth - look elsewhere.

I shopped around for a 9.2 atmos 4k receiver for a while and this one was what I decided on. If you are looking for a quality receiver with loads of features and Atmos is hard to find under $700. I use this with a 7.2.2 set up and have two up firing speakers in the front. You can not use this receiver and have 7.4, you can only do 5.4. Had some issues trying to ensure it was actually producing Atmos sound out of the speakers with streaming content. Had to end up buying Apple TV 4K to finally get the receiver show up that it was producing Atmos sound. It was because the tv and receiver do not support HDMI eARC. ( to be fair, very few do at this time) I could see how this could be confusing for people. Also, not having a printed manual included is total crap. You have to download the pdf and print it. The up-converting and 4k switching is great. The video quality is improved dramatically. Sound quality is great and I am using TruAudio speakers. Very happy with the receiver at a great price with all the bells and whistles.

After recently upgrading to a 4K Television, it was necessary to upgrading my remaining Home Theater System (Sony UHD Blu-Ray, Klipsch Speakers and Onkyo Receiver). Having previously owned a Onkyo TX-SR608 receiver and SKS-HT870 7.1 Speaker system since January 2011, the choice to me was fairly obvious. Since my speaker choice had already been preordained, needing low profile flush to the wall mount speakers for my living room(which would not be Atmos capable), it was just a matter of finding a receiver that would deliver not only the sound and output power I desired, but the features lacking in my older unit (Wireless and Bluetooth). After doing a bit of research, this model fit the bill exactly as I had hoped, and giving me a bit of additional speaker capability (2 in ceiling mounts, should I choose to do so). Delivers crisp clear sound to my Klipsch speakers, and set up was a breeze. Plan to enjoy this for many years to come...

This receiver was simple to set up and has amazing sound. The auto speaker adjust works well bit leaves the music slightly lacking but with the on screen quick adjustments it's easily remedied. Replaced my Harman Kardon with this and it had no problem keeping up. The sound why slightly sharper with the onkyo at lower volumes. The sound adjustment for position is very focused if you move one seat to the left or right there is a noticeable change in audio( I didnt like this). The Dolby Atmos is very clean. Makes you feel like your there. Overall I would definately reccomend this for a home theater.

Awesome Amplifier/Receiver. I need something to replace my Pioneer VSX 1021 that stopped working after several years of use. 1. Easy setup. 2. Pushes my 5.2 speaker system to its limits. 3. Zone 2 has my outdoor living area Rockin. 4. Handles my 75inch Ultra Hd Sony perfectly. 5. Onyko App simple to use. 6. Huge sound for the price. 7. Works great with PS 4. 8. DVDs and Streaming sound are excellent.

I bought this receiver to replace an old Onkyo Tx-Nr 609. The previous receiver still worked, but I wanted something with WiFi and Dolby Atmos. This receiver did all that and then some. It has plenty of power to run my 9 Klipsch Reference series speakers and seems to stay cool to the touch. You can connect to WiFi and stream with the built in Chromecast or use the other built in apps, Tidal, DTS Play-fi, and Amazon Music to name a few.

I was waiting for the IMAX ENHANCED firmware update before I wrote my review for this one. All I can say is great deal 4 real!! Paired with my panasonic dp-ub820 4k ultra hd player, these two work together perfectly to give you everything you could possibly want for a home theater. You can definitely see and hear a difference with the IMAX ENHANCED feature. I own over 425 4k uhd discs, and I love how the Dolby Atmos takes you to a whole different level of entertainment. It will make you want to replay every movie in your collection.

Reason for purchase was to replace a $1,000.00 Denon because i was tired of the USB to my DAC. so set this up WiFi using both Spotify Connect and Airplay. now it took awhile as the setup is so different then Denon. but none the less very straightforward was amazed how much in one word musical without the veils that Denon sound creates. Really like the Class A/B Amplification both receivers are 100 watts but the Onkyo goes why louder with no distortion i literally feel like i'm at the rock concert. there are cool features as well that help you adjust sound to different movies as well not going back to Class D that is for sure. oh btw my DAC's where Modi 3 and Mini DSP 2X4HD both reputable DACS for the $$$. Ran the Onkyo half power for about a month then cranked it to 80% for a rock concert, it took about 6 weeks to fully break in and warm up. To Much to List, Well worth the $$$.

Bought this to serve as the brain box for my DIY budget basement home theater project. It doesn’t disappoint! Hard to find features in a 9.2 home theater receiver like this one has at the price this sells for. I bought it months ago and finally just got everything hooked up last weekend. The sound is great and the features are awesome for the price. Easy to hookup.

i bought this to replace a 7.2 onkyo receiver, i have dolby atmos enabled speakers and needed the 9.2 to be able to use all of my speakers, this was the one i kept coming back to, 4k, dolby atmos/vision, thx certified, you need to use the calibration mike to be able to set up the different listening modes, i had one doubt but quickly found out that the I ( info ) button on the remote control is the same, if you push it during movie playback it will show you what type of listening mode you are in, i have always had onkyo receivers and will continue to do so, for sound, setup, and customer support they cant be beat.

Very easy to set up and configure. Also very easy to reconfigure to match the room dimensions and acoustics. Great surround sound performance for 5.1+ systems. One drawback - Chromecast built-in is for audio only. But solved the video streaming problem with a $40 Fire TV Stick. Works great.

Was looking at a couple of 9.2 AVRs the Pioneer LX503, the Onkyo NR797 and a Denon x6400H. For my budget of around $500 that ruled out the Denon even though I listened to it in-store and enjoyed it. The LX503 is a one year older AVR compared to the 797, missing a few dolby\DTS codecs, you can't adjust speaker individually but had external AMP pre-outs a definite plus. The pioneer was $399. Finally settled on the NR 797 open-box missing a power cable for $420. Its connected to a Frankenstein speaker setup of flea market speakers: 4 Yamaha NSF150 towers, two Boston Acoustics Bookshelf speakers, two Cambridge Audio cube speakers from the FPS2000 speaker set and two Klipsch R-115SW subs. All total the speakers cost $90 . The NR797 has all the usual codecs for music and movie enjoyment. Setup and auto calibration was a breeze although the subs were set too low. I manually adjusted those. I have two old desktop computers and PS4 connected through three of the HDMI ports. The AVR is outputting to an 85" 4K TV and everything works beautifully. No HDMI board issues older Onkyos had or any other issues for that matter. This is after about a year and one month of use. Happy with the purchase overall. and its unfortunate that Onkyo has gone under due to the pandemic.
