I have the 480 gb in my HP 2-in-1, and the 960gb in my old gaming laptop. For the price-per-gb on an SSD, this is a really good deal, even without the sale price. Performance wise, there are better options out there. Installation in my 2-in-1 and in my gaming laptop was pretty straightforward. The hard part was opening up the netbook since it had to be completely taken apart and had no access panel, but youtube was very helpful with that. Once I had it open, it's pretty much just plug-n-play. Ideally you'll want to just do a fresh OS install, and mount your old drive in an external enclosure to copy your old files over and use for extra storage. Pick up a USB thumb drive if you don't have a DVD drive. All versions of windows can be downloaded for free from Microsoft. You'll need an activation code to validate though. Just type in all zeroes if you don't have an activation code. Windows 10 doesn't have the annoying windows activation popups found in previous versions, you just can't right click the desktop to change the background image unless you have a valid activation key. You'll have to right click an image and set it as your wallpaper from there. Most pre-built systems have an activation key sticker on them somewhere. If you can't find a sticker, and you're a smart person with access to google, you can probably find a way to recover your current activation key. If you prefer to have all of your old programs and settings, just on the newer drive, and not have to go through the whole setup process, you'll still need an external drive enclosure to clone your old drive to the new one, unless you have room for two hard drives. In the instructions with this drive you'll find a free product key for a hard drive utility. Follow the instructions there to do a complete clone of your hard drive. You'll need to make sure the entire drive image is cloned over, not just copied, otherwise you'll have problems booting into windows, and you'll need to load up a windows installation disk to load up into boot recovery mode. If you're having trouble with the included software, there's plenty of other free options available that will do the trick like "clonezilla". Either way, before you pull your old drive out, make sure you have the following. 1: New Hard drive 2: Windows installation drive, for installing windows, or recovering boot manager, either on DVD or USB thumb drive. 3: External hard drive connector or enclosure so you can clone your old hard drive, or copy over important files, and to use the old drive as external storage/backup 4: Your windows activation key. If you're going from an old-style hard DISK, you will notice a MASSIVE improvement in load times of windows and all of your programs. It will make your computing experience overall snappier. This is a great upgrade to breath new life into an aging computer as long as you don't have too many other limiting factors. If you're just looking to upgrade from a smaller SSD, the performance of this drive can be a little underwhelming. The drive is lighter in weight than a traditional hard disk, has no moving parts, so you don't have to worry about your disk headers crashing from bumps and bangs. There's a 3 year warranty, the manufacture doesn't specify any limitations on this drive as far as maximum program/erase cycles. Generally SSDs have a limited number of read/writes they can perform before they start to give up and become unreliable. As long as you're not writing 100gb/day to this drive, you shouldn't have to worry about it not lasting the 3 years. Everyday users who don't do a whole lot of file transfers could expect to get 5-7 years out of their drives. If you have important files though, it's always a good idea to do regular backups. It's definitely worth picking up one of these drives, especially when they go on sale. Pricing at BestBuy with this particular product is often competitive with online retailers, sometimes cheaper, especially when you factor in the cost of shipping.

My laptop came with a rather powerful AMD APU but was held back by a small amount of RAM and a spacious but incredibly slow HDD. (5400 RPM!) I swapped out the HDD for a SSD and the performance change was noticeable in an instant. I decided to remove my optical drive and put the HDD in it's place for a ton of storage, it caused lag between the drives and my games would lock up for 3-5 seconds while online and that can't happen in a competition! Replaced the HDD with this PNY SSD and not only did the lag go away, but I've never seen a computer run this fast! Windows 10 start up took 10-12 seconds, while shut down took 15-30 seconds (the platters of the HDD needed to spin up and down to perform the operations.) Now, with both SSDs in place... Start up is about 5-6 seconds and shut down is about 10-12. I can barely close the lid before the PC is shut down. It's incredible! The access time on this SSD is blazing fast compared to a HDD and apparently there are even faster PNY SSDs! (Trust me, an average PC user wouldn't need much more than this. There is such a thing as overkill. lol) Reading and writing to the disc is almost instantaneous and there are times when the visuals of the PC don't match up with the work happening in the background. Such as saving a word pad, the saved file will show up in my personal folder before the pad itself even has a chance to close out in the window that I had just been working on. It used to be a pretty good lag of 5-10 seconds to save (which is reasonable on a lot of PCs, really) and now, I can't even describe the time taken, it's just so doggone fast. Installation was simple, just slide it into a caddy or bolt it to the case with a couple of screws, plug in the sata cabling and reboot your PC, done. It's incredibly simple. Very thin, very light, but packs a lot of power. Highly recommended, especially at sales pricing. (full disclosure, I bought this at sales pricing) The first upgrade you should do for your PC is swapping out your HDD for a SSD, you'll revitalize an old clunker into feeling brand new and this PNY SSD is a good place to start.

PNY is the cheapest actual Name Brand

I bought an older PNY SSD, and I must say they've really upped their game since then. In the past, they had slower SSD's, but not they're almost as fast as industry leaders like SanDisk and Samsung. My older PNY XLR8 drive was actually noticeably slower in real world use, but this new one may be slower on paper than a Samsung Evo, but in real life usage I can't really tell the difference. Almost 500gb for this insanely low price is a GREAT deal. Boot up times for the computer I put this in went from over 1 minute (on a magnetic spinner "regular" hard drive) to around 10 seconds flat. I used the included Acronis TrueImage code (which was on the paper flodout "manual") to active a copy of TrueImage that I downloaded online and then used to clone the contents of the old hard drive to this new one. Then I just set the bios to boot from the new SSD instead of the old HDD (which I kept with its contents intact, but as a storage drive) and poof, the computer was ready to go and better than it was when it was new. Now, since this is a budget drive, it won't come with a SATA cable or a 3.5" adapter bracket and it only includes 4 screws, and it doesn't have a CD with the Acronis software, but I knew all that going in, and I was fine with that. The case I was using had 1 SSD slot anyway, although if you have an older case, you may need a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter, which you'll have to buy separately. All in all, this is the cheapest SSD that's actually worth it imho, and cheaper non name-brand drives may not actually work as well. PNY is the cheapest brand name I've run across that is actually good and that I would consider a "name brand", so if you want good stuff for cheap (albeit not GREAT stuff, just decent to good) PNY is a good way to go. If you need ram, Best Buy often has some heat shielded, low-profile DDR ram from PNY on sale as well, even inside physical stores. It's often worth looking at because the prices are as cheap or cheaper than prices you'll find online.

I cannot honestly rate this drive as I returned the item before using it. I assume it is as good as they have said it is. I just wanted to let you guys know that I had placed my order while the drive was available, in quantity, from a local Best Buy store. Sadly, my item wasn't pulled in a timely manner and after hours of waiting for a confirmation text, I called. Turns out stores are docked if they miss a pull. My item wasn't pulled and had the inventory manager been more concerned in not getting pinged for a missed pull than in satisfying my order, he could have passed it to along to a nearby store saving me the trouble of calling the main service number, twice. Long story short - I had to convince a customer service rep that I was telling the truth in this matter even though the time sequence of events in their system clearly showed my order was finally dropped while I was talking with the store's manager about it. Funny thing was, the inventory manager didn't tell me he was dropping my order - it was only after we ended the call that I got a text from BB telling me that that was the course of action he had just taken. Had he done anything sooner, another nearby store could have fulfilled my order. By the time this all happened, stock was gone. The customer service rep I talked with took more effort than should have needed to finally get my item shipped to meet the same standard had my item been dealt with in a timely manner. So, after receiving the drive - I returned it. I liked the drive and the price - just not the manner in which I had to jump through hoops in order to get it. If by some chance there is less than ten of an item at the time you order the item online it might be in your best interest, fellow shoppers, to check on that order within an hour of doing so or you might have the fun of writing about your experience as I just did. Good luck!

    Best Upgrade I ever did

The drive works flawlessly. I upgraded an Intel i5 system. Here's what I recommend to anyone trying to upgrade an a computer that has a standard (non SSD harddrive). 1. Back it up to a USB drive. (stop complaining, you should have been doing this all along!) 2. Ignore the cloning function even if you have the software for it (it came with the PNY drive.) Cloning clones all the problems you have on your existing PC. The software itself is not always friendly either. 3. Make sure you have the license number for the windows system that's installed on your machine. You'll need it. (Mine was on a sticker on the back of the unit). 4. Go to microsoft site and create a bootable windows 10 install disk (I used a 128 gig USB for that). 5. Research how to access the bios on your machine (you'll need to be able to set it up to boot from your CD or USB) 6. Install your new SSD HD (pretty easy for newer pcs.- it'll probably use the same cable that plugged into the current HD - sata drive) 7. Boot from the install disk you created with Microsoft 8. Let the boot disk install Windows 10 on your new harddrive (you will be asked some questions in the process). It will help if you have access to the system and component drivers but you can find them on the web. 9. Do this upgrade and you have a clean PC with no bloatware and it will be screaming fast!

I've used all brands of SSD's in the past, so consider this a professional opinion. On white paper, online reviews this controller #cs1311 is the budget line, however in performance it beats the more expensive #cs2111 series drives. Longevity? Never had one go bad yet on any brand. Speed wise this drive out performs the Samsung EVO 850 in the "real world". That's my tests via Crystal Disk on my system. Mileage may vary but the speed is what it is. It hits the specs on the box easily & consistently. The entire CS1311 series drives are just awesome drives. Why pay more? This is the best middle road drive you can buy for the money. Spending more on Samsung, is more paying for the name than anything you can time in real life. Ease of installation is another key feature, even comes with a spacer for thicker drive bays. You get a free Acronis download to use to clone your old drive & you can keep using it's other features as well after you're done. I've installed 10 of these for customers with zero issues.

I got this at Best Buy when it was on sale so for the price per gig it was a great deal. The build seems sturdy and it was easy to install. The performance is good for a triple cell SSD. It came with migration software, drive utilities and the latest flash version. For cons I'd say at it's price point you could get a 500GB SSD Samsung EVO for a little more than would perform better with extra space This SSD wouldn't perform a RAID 0 with my Sandisk Ultra II 480GB SSD when it should of. I couldn't load Windows 10 on it in a RAID 0. I guess it's best to have matching drives from the same manufacturer and the same storage capacity. I was however able to still install programs on it after it was formatted. A little tip for some people that may have a problem with this. Sometime you'll get a drive like this and a Windows install won't recognize it. It's best to make sure the drive is formatted before trying to put an OS on it. I ran into that problem before and after a format it was not an issue anymore.

Until now, I have been very skeptical of the SSD drives, mostly due to price. I went to Best Buy to replace another drive that had lived it's useful life. I was inquiring as to whether one of the new drives was a 5600 or 7200 RPM drives since it wasn't listed on the box. The associate began talking up the SSD, and I was again skeptical, however, the more he talked it up, the more interested I became. I bought the 480 Gb drive and loaded my "heavy hitter" programs on it such as PhotoShop, etc. It made a tremendous difference as to how fast the large programs now load. Also, no noise, no fan, just lays there and does a tremendous job. If you get a chance, pick one up. It's worth the money.

It has been a while since I purchased an SSD (and am used to Macs now, for which their internal SSD specs command a significant premium), so I was more than pleasantly surprised to find a SSD in the 500 GB range for just a little over $100. Simply stated, this drive is big for a SSD and it is fast. This was an upgrade from a 5400 rpm hard drive that was in my gaming PC. My Windows 10 boot time went from 30'ish seconds to under five seconds with this drive. The 480 GB also gave me plenty of room to install the OS and numerous games. I still have another mechanical drive in my computer for storage of videos, songs, and other media as 480 GB is still on the small size for storage of those files (at least for me). Given the speed and price, however, I have no complaints with the size, which is still pretty good for an SSD at 480 GB. This upgrade was a no-brainer for me!

I have used PNY products many times and have not found one of them to be faulty. They have proved to be reliable with good performance. This is my first time to convert a laptop from hdd to ssd and, I have to say that I'm inpressed with the speed and performance. I read several reviews on ssd's and decided to go with the PNY. The boot time was approximately 6 times faster than the hdd (5400 rpm) that came with the laptop and battery lasts considerably longer. Programs (apps) load much quicker than before as well. I use Speccy to check components and it indicates the laptop temperature is cooler (30c or less). This has been a great performance improvement for this 4 year old laptop.

My thought process prior to buying an SSD was that the price was too high, now however after buying one, that opinion quickly changed. $100 for a 480 GB the day I bought it, which caught my eye and after debate, I figured it was worth trying. I immediately swapped my hard drive out of my laptop the day I bought it, set the SSD up which was easy, installed my OS and I was amazed at how much faster my laptop ran. What used to take 20-30 seconds to boot up now takes less than 5 seconds, 3 at most. Never going to use a regular hard drive again for anything but backups and storage, SSD's are great and I am more inclined to buy them at normal price now thanks to the experience I had. Highly recommend trying it if you love speed.

I guess I don't have a 100% full experience yet. I don't use my laptop as much as I used to. Anyways I did have a little bit of a hard time installing it, but I'm blaming it on not being able to get the entire back off my laptop. After changing my hard drive from an HDD to an SSD I've been able to do things a ton quicker. An example was that I was in a select class and it had been a while since I had restarted my laptop so it was extremely slow with the poor internet. So I went to restart it and for turning it off, and back on took almost the entire class. After installing this it can do that in like 30 seconds to a minute rather than 5 minutes for off and 5-10 for on.

Honestly this is like the 8th SSD that I get from Pny, and none have fail me, the speed and reaction time of your computer will dramatically change with this drive... I'm planning to get a 960GB for my workstation no matter what computer you have MAC or PC this will do it as the best Upgrade, in case you already don't have an SSD drive... You don't need a New Computer, Just an SSD Drive and at least 4GB of RAM, depending on your use... If you are not sure about it, get a price match and go for it... don't be cheap, this will save you time... My Specs... 2012 MacBook Pro 9,1 intel i7 16GB Ram 480GB SSD running currently 4 OS on Parallels 11: Win7, Win 10, WIN XP and El Capitan

For the price I would like a larger SSD but this one is of decent size and from a good brand. My biggest complaint: it was not made clear that this SSD did not come with ANY cables. That should have been specifically noted on the product page. To make matters worse, I had to go to Micro Center because my local Best Buy and even the Best Buy website didn't have SATA data cables with a 6gb transfer speed. Don't sell SSDs with that speed if you aren't going to sell the necessary cables. I am just lucky there is a Micro Center near by that stocks a wide selection of such cables. I have always counted on Best Buy (the website if not the store) to have what I need so this lapse was very disappointing.

I don’t know what other reviews are saying this SSD isn’t Mac compatible, it works perfectly with mine and has since day 1. I replaced the stock 320GB HDD that came with my MacBook as preventative maintenance since the computer is a few years old now and drives will fail at some point. Startup is faster, large apps like photoshop and illustrator start and render faster, and the noise that comes from a spinning plate Drive is gone, the fans run less at full throttle, this switch was fantastic. The price for storage is great and it’s speed is awesome for someone like me who needs a machine that can perform, but doesn’t need a super-computer.

Purchased this SSD for my laptop which I purchased 2 years ago with an i7 4700HQ processor and a 5400 RPM HDD, laptop always seemed to be holding back since purchase and finally decided to upgrade it to the 480 PNY SSD. It's like night and day, boots to windows in under 10 seconds, application launches in half the time, and working with multiple windows open does not seem to bother it at all. Great item and was on sale for $106, looking to buy another for my other laptop with an i3 processor. Only bad thing was that the cloning software which came with it sucks and was outdated, so ended up purchasing the cloning software with cable Apricorn sold by BestBuy.

Loved the speed of the hard drive, but had much difficulty using the Acronis software to clone. Finally gave up trying to clone it with their software and tried some of the freebies, but no luck. Used my recovery CDs and installed 8.1 and then upgraded to 10 again. More problems, couldn't open anything in Documents or Pictures. So gave up fighting that and did a fresh restore of Windows 10, same thing, can't open Documents, file moved or renamed, couldn't set Chrome as default browser, Pictures wouldn't open. So swapped out the the SSD and put the old hard drive back in. Not a happy camper. Originally wanted the Samsung, suppose to have 3 in stock, no one could find them.

As promised this drive really made my old laptop seem like it'd gotten a hyper dose of RAM. The difference in speed of opening files, how quickly it boots or shuts down, etc is amazing. The cloning software it came with was a little confusing...nowhere did it mention the need for a boot disk. Guess I should have known about needing one. I copied the drive, installed it in the laptop and...nothing. After some digging figured out I needed a boot disk/program so found another program to do this, booted into BIOS and all was well and working great since. I'd say the drive itself is a 5 but the software is a 3 so giving a 4 overall.

Replacing a standard hard drive with an SSD is a no-brainier for laptops today. The price and performance justify the investment while adding years of life to the laptop. The only issue with this unit was in cloning the hard drive. It never worked. After 5 times of cycling through the procedure, I just booted in repair mode with the SSD installed then reinstalled Windows and my other software. It's actually been OK since my files are on my HDD (in an external case) so I just move what files I need. It's like cleaning out your garage without the issue of toiling over what to discard. The SSD boots very fast and runs software very well.

This SSD drive was extremely easy to install. It increased my Startup/Restart Times by 10x Fold which was the longest part of my mornings beside waiting for the coffee to brew! -The Bad: although my computer can access files faster its nowhere as fast as my original HDD at writing files and viewing thumbnails. Plus I get artifacts on my loaded/loading/transferred thumbnails (ex. Sometimes shows no image with and x above it...Weird) -More Pluses: It loads all my Applications in no time flat which is the selling point for me because my Adobe products alway took FOREVER TO OPEN in the past. OVERALL... I'd Say Buy it.
