I came into this movie expecting to completely hate it because of my love for the original 1987 Robocop movie. Fortunately it's not a shot for shot remake and tries to make its own mark with an original story and take on the character. Granted I still dont think this remake holds a candle to the original but its a really good social commentary and an entertaining film. The main sticking point for me was the bump down from a hard R rating the original had to the safe PG-13 rating this new one contains. I'm not saying extreme violence is needed for a good story but for a story of a crime fighting robot in a place as dangerous as Detroit you're going to depict it in a way that's not safe for children in my opinion. The cast was also phenomenal with heavyweights like Michael Keaton, Samuel Jackson, and Gary Oldman bringing gravitas to the proceedings and really giving the movie legitimacy. I wasn't a big fan of Joel Kinnaman's portrayal of Alex Murphy. When he becomes Robocop he does just fine but pre-Robocop Alex Murphy is depicted as a very hard edge street talking cop, a far cry from the All American hero cop version of Alex Murphy from the original. I feel the original iteration of Alex Murphy worked better because it allowed for more sympathy for the character after he is brutally murdered and turned into Robocop. One thing I really liked was Abbie Cornish playing Alex's wife Clara in a much more important and fleshed out role than the original. It helped especially since I found the Alex character so lacking. The original Robocop had very dated special effects for things like the ED-209 and such but the visceral violence was very grotesque and gritty. It's a surprise with the advancements in computer generated special effects since then that I didn't find this remake's effects more convincing than the original. There's this quality to them that makes them obviously CGI and its very distracting and pulls me out. It reminds me how the effects in 'I Am Legend' made me feel. It's worth a definite check out but whether or not its worthy of a purchase or rent is dependent on how much of a sci-fi fan you are and whether you can get past the fact this is a very different Robocop from the original.

I came into this with the gloves laced up, ready to annihilate this remake of a movie that I have loved dearly since I was a child. I came out respecting the effort put into this and actually hoping for a second installment in the future. This is by no means a great film. It lacks the biting, satire and audacity the original brought to the table. It does bring some new ideas to the table that were never really fleshed out in the original films. The first one being how did all of this effect his wife and son? We are given much more material devoted on the impact that this transformation has on his family and the implications of that. Second, the filmmakers weigh in on the ethics of bringing a human back to life as a machine. While these two topics are barely dabbled upon in Paul Verhoven's classic, this gives them quite a bit of time to be fleshed out. The PG-13 rating is a factor here and it draws attention to the fact that many things are toned down to make this a more lucrative, "vanilla" action film. I was heavily disappointed when I found out that Murphy's iconic gun is basically a stun gun in this film. Also, the city doesn't feel run down or overrun with crime. There are a few mentions about crime rates, but we are never allowed to see how the city has devolved into a distopian, gritty, violent place like it was in the original. I really enjoyed the performances, especially from Gary Oldman and Michael Keaton. Their presence adds a lot to the film and I'm glad they are given meaty, important roles. While Joel Kinnaman does fine as Robocop, I feel like any capable actor could have been placed in his shoes and the difference would be minimal. My hat goes off to Jose Padilha and crew for paying respect to the past, while trying to bring a new slant to the classic story. They injected very relevant themes about the media and corporations, much like in the 1987 film, and they brought them into the new millennium. While this leans a bit more on the "been there, done that" side of things, this is a solid action film that dives a bit deeper into ideas that made this character and this universe so memorable and ingrained them into pop culture history.

I remember when the original came out in the theaters and I loved it. This is a pretty good upgrade to the Robocop franchise. Lot's of action and twists in it. I enjoyed it at the movies and now in my home.

When this movie was announced, I knew it stood as much of a chance of recapturing the feel of the original as every PREDATOR or TERMINATOR movie stood to recapture the magic of those franchises. Watching the film confirmed my beliefs, but I must admit that I found myself thinking this was still entertaining and worthwhile. Detroit and its problems have been replaced by the dual problems of rampant crime and the inability of government to agree on the obvious and get things done. Gone too is an almost comically sanitary Alex Murphy. He's still a good guy, but his toughness and Detroit street sensibilities come through here; each makes the cop he becomes more believable later in the film. I enjoyed the absolute certainty of conservative bloviater, Pat Novak (played by Samuel L. Jackson) about "robo" cops stopping crime in Detroit, even though the theme of uncertainty about combining a human mind with a cybernetic body played out in numerous ways throughout the film. This added a 21st century problem that speaks to some of our concerns about our reliance on technology. I'd be lying if I said this film was as good as the original, but I'd also be less than truthful if I didn't say it's worth a watch.

I loved the Peter Weller version so much that this redo didn't appeal to me for a while. Then I decided to give it a look and was I ever so shocked to love it, too. The director and writers found a way to take the original concept and work it into a very credible movie that stands on its own. The new look - the more detailed reveal of what a RoboCop's biological and mechanical fusion might be - was thoughtful and touching. I wasn't familiar with the lead actor but he certainly worked his role emotionally. I liked that RoboCop didn't have to weather this alone, or become a total mech without human contact. Made me think of how humans could live intimately with a construct such as he. It was an exciting movie that didn't make me hark too much on the first one. It looked suitably techno-urban and kept the villains within credible meanness and not easily vulnerable. Great job, worth the effort of doing a good movie over again and doing it justice.

When you try to remake a movie you in for a bumpy road. When it comes to a cult classic like RoboCop it makes it even harder. So many people like the original and don't want to see it ruined by a remake mess like some movies have. I however, don't think this one was a mess. It was an enjoyable movie and has some cool features to it. The action was pretty cool and has some great scenes in it. The plot was a little thicker than I remember the original being (it has been a while since I saw the original). I thought they modernized the story very well and made it more relatable to this generation. I like the design change that they did in the first part of the movie, but brought it home with the climax of the story. I thought they had some great actors in this movie and they all did a good job. It was a fun action movie with some heartfelt moments for the characters. I really enjoyed this RoboCop reboot and would like to see them continue it one into other movies.

I know the trendy thing to do is dismiss something just because it's a remake, but you'd miss out on some great things this way, like John Carpenter's "The Thing". I'm not saying the new "RoboCop" is at the same level, but it's actually pretty good. We get a bit more humanity out of Murphy due to the presence of his wife and son. Obviously the violence isn't at a level of the X-rated original and the studio tinkering is apparent, but just because it's PG-13 doesn't mean there's nothing shocking. There is a truly horrifying image when we get to see the full effect of what the scientists have done to Murphy. Some of the classic lines from the original are present, albeit a bit forced. For all of the praise "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" gets, it suffered from the same problem. While I'd love to see the director's original version, I'd still recommend this to anyone, be they fans of the original or not.

A collective groan greeted the announcement that MGM was remaking RoboCop, followed by howls of protest at the news that the remake would be rated PG-13. Director Paul Verhoeven's 1987 original famously pushed the limits on gore and goo. Director Padilha may have lost the ratings battle, but he won the war of ideas. A devoted fan of Verhoeven's Robocop, though Padilha's film borrows key story points, and his film is studded with affectionate references to the 1987 original, several critical differences radically transform the story Paul Verhoeven's 1987 RoboCop remains an unsurpassable classic, partly because it came first and partly because Verhoeven's cheerfully offensive visuals have a unique panache that no one else could hope to equal. But Padilha's 2014 version offers its own pleasures, if one approaches it with an open mind and doesn't expect it to replicate the Verhoeven experience

There are tons of people who dislike this movie purely because they don't feel the Peter Weller version needed a remake. Truth of the matter is, there was some seriously good acting all throughout the film. Gary Oldman is fantastic as usual. Michael Keaton provides whimsical evil to Sellars' character. The imagery is very true to the direction law enforcement is following, with black on black tacti-cool. Which...kind of makes the acrobatic shootouts seem somewhat out of place, when we're talking about cop power, cop suspension, and cop turning. It seems too agile, too anime-like. I grew up in the eighties, and watched Robocop (1987) non-stop when I was a kid. I played the Nintendo game until my eyes hurt. Nostalgia didn't cause me to dislike this movie. I might have left Samuel L. Jackson out of the political loop. Maybe throw Aaron Eckhart into the role.

I simply loved this movie! It definitely should have had a follow-up sequel and unlike the majority of the time the remake was actually better than the originals. I feel that improvement of this film could have only been had the film been in UHD

First, you must understand this movie is missing the satire, humor, and social commentary of the first film. It is a reimagining. It focuses on how technology is evolving to the point of controlling us (ie: drones). And that the people behind this evolution are not to be trusted. Into this they bring the Robocop franchise. The movie was okay... I enjoyed it. The graphics are spectacular. Watching this makes me think that the second could be much better since they dont have to re-establish the backstory during the second movie. The origin of Robocop pretty much takes up at least the majority of this film. This film had some really awesome actors in it... although I didn't really know the lead actor. Anyway, if you like the franchise... you will like this movie. Just don't expect it to be the classic that the first one is.

Considering there have been so many great 80's and 90's movies that have been re-made, in recent times, I didn't really have high expectations for this one. I loved the original, as cheezy as it was. There are so many quotables from the original movie, that it was hard for me to really consider that I would enjoy this. I was wrong. This re-make is one of the best that has been done, in recent times. Some of the cheezy 1 liners transferred over to this new version, but not in the same manner as the original. It was a nice touch without destroying the integrity of the lines from the original. Considering there was a great sale on the blu ray, it was worth purchasing. Would I buy it at full price, I'm not really sure, but I definitely didn't regret this purchase.

    Robocop for a new generation!

When it comes to remakes I'm always skeptical since many fall short of the originals or try to hard to pay homage rather than being their own film. As a huge fan of the original I was dreading this new film. But after giving it a chance I was truly surprised at how good it was. The new Robocop manages to exist as its own film and does a lot of things differently than the original. The basic plot is the same with Alex Murphy being a cop who gets killed and is turned into a cyborg crime fighting machine who goes up against an evil corporation. But the story is handled very differently from there. I don't wanna give too much away but this time around Omnicorp is a supplier of robotic technology to the military and police which are banned in the US. When Murphy is injured they decide to use what's left of him to create a cyborg officer with a human quality in hopes the public will be more accepting of robotic police. Unlike the original Murphy isn't killed and brought back to life when he gets turned into Robocop. Hes only severely injured so he still retains all his memories and humanity which cause conflict with his new robotic programming. We get to see more about the man that creates him as well and we also get to know Murphy's family better this time around. Robocop himself isn't the slow moving version of old but instead is state of the art with speed, strength, and multiple tactical modes. And instead of just some low life criminals this time around Robocop has to go up against Omnicorp's slew of cyborgs and technology which makes for some very fun and cool action scenes. The movie doesn't quite go into the satire like the original but it still touches on modern social commentaries. The movie has soul and heart and isn't a brainless action film. It's also not the bloody R rated like the original but instead a PG-13 movies so its a bit safer for kids to watch but as an adult don't let that rating turn you off. As a fan of the original I have to admit I really like this one as well. One of the better remakes to come out of Hollywood.
