A Necessity for any sized Smart Home

Look past the price of this sensor and just buy it. One for every door and window in the house. Pair it with Phillips Hue and your Nest, Ecobee or other Smart Thermostat and transform your home into a fully automated smartHome with automatic lights, fine tuned control over temperature and voice prompts with voice control. At first glance it appears to just notify SmartThings that a door/Window is open, however that is just the tip of the iceberg. It can monitor open/close state, vibration, pitch and yaw and temperature. Left the front door open and the A/C on? Get an alert on your phone and the A/C automatically shuts down. Bedroom to Hot and Living room to cold? Link it to your thermostat to set temperature to a whole home average. Tired of fumbling around in the Dark. Create automatic lights that switch on after sunset when a door is opened and off again once it closes. Attach one to your washing machine and quickly know if your load is off balance. Attach one to the lid of your mailbox for mail delivery notifications. Or stick to a gate as a knock sensor and know when Fido wants to come in or go out or if the kids are sneaking out the back gate. 1 sensor with endless possibilities. The fact that this sensor does so much however is probably its biggest downfall as some programming will be required. While SmartThings has a very active and helpful user community getting your hub set up and tailored to your house and unique needs can Leave holes in drywall from repeated impact from fist and foreheads. Take a deep breath, walk outside, pet the dog, walk back in, and start from the top. It works if you work it.

    SmartThings Sensor

Sensor was easy to install although the magnet part (the smaller of the two parts) was too thick for my application. This led me to improvise a solution. No fault of the product it was just where I wanted to install the sensor was on a door with a very 1" thick door trim. To resolve issue I replaced the included magnet with a thin magnet strip purchased at a local craft store. The sensor still is operational with the replaced magnet. For installation the sensor is mounted by peeling the paper off the adhesive tape and mounting to the surface of the door. Configuration of the sensor to work with the SmartThings hub was quick and easy. The sensor is in stalled on a door that is used frequently. After about a month the battery life is reported to be 75%. Battery life may become an issue as I was expecting to get 1 to 2 years from the battery before replacing it. The sensor is truly multipurpose because in addition to detecting open/close conditions it also reports on temperature and acceleration.

This Smartthings sensor works as expected so far, but the battery (CR2450) life is a concern. I tried it first inside my freezer and remarkably it communicated successfully with the Smartthings hub located on the other side of my home just fine. The battery reading dropped over a period of 36 hours from 100% to 5%. Maybe it was just a bad battery, or maybe the cold temp (approximately 7 degrees) affects the battery life. I replaced the battery and it seems to be lasting a bit longer at room temperature, but still declining faster than I would expect. I've seen other folks comment about this issue after a few Google queries so I'm not alone. Otherwise the sensor works as expected with good response to vibration, temperature, and open/close detection.

    Samsung Devices Compatible?

Even Samsung devices are almost impossible to connect, and then they don't stay connected. Great, new technology for having a smart home. There are few competitive systems. The hub was easy to set up. Even the Samsung SmartThings devices where almost impossible to connect to the hub. I almost packaged the entire thing up and returned it, had I not spent so much time and money trying to get it to work. When everything worked, it's great. As things get off-line, it's not worth the work to get the system back in working order. I'm not convinced that other manufacturer systems are better. Checked 'would recommend' because there wasn't a 'might' option.

I originally picked up 2 of these for the garage doors to let my wife and I know if we left either open before we went to bed. The downside originally was that I set them up in the new app, and then had to go into the old classic ST app and change it to work as a garage sensor. Despite not being a great user experience it's been great knowing the status so much that I went out and quickly bought two more. I now am able to turn on my basement lights with the help of these. Better yet, these sensors also can tell me the temperature and vibration so much that I'm planning on using more of them throughout the house for other projects.

I purchase 4 for these multipurpose sensors to accompaniment my home security system which presently has installed three of the 1st Gen sensors. Being able to receive alerts on your device when doors or windows are open or trigger lights to turn when configured to do so in the app is a good approach to a Basic home security system which doesn’t require a subscription fee. Having a temperature monitor is an added extra. I have read online that the battery life has been improved with the 2nd Gen, so now I have to wait to see.

I have this on my front door, with a bit of setting up. Every time the fount door opens my Alexa Say’s “Front Door open.” which is really cool for about a month. Now just a nice security thing for me. It’s also setup so when it closes it send the signal to lock the door, which also nice security setup. Not so much when got a lot of groceries and making several trips, with hands full. I just leave the door open for that now. Side note it also reports temperature.

I bought this to be connected to my Wink Hub v2, It paired just fine, but would only show temp and open/close, and the temp would only update once an hr. Since i also am running a SmartThings hub i removed this sensor and added it to the ST hub and it also has accelerometer (knows when someone is knocking on the door). And an even better option is Google Assistant picks this sensor up when connected to ST and i can ask if its open/closed or even the temp. Very nice!!

I used to use the Iris Smarthome system, but had to change since they are shutting down. After deciding to go with Smartthings I grabbed a few of these to replace some old door sensors. These worked great. Connected quickly and were ready to stick up. They also read temperature and vibration. I ended up getting another one to use in a dresser drawer. I told Smartthings to alert me when it vibrates when the drawer opens.

Work very well. Easy to set up. Love they do motion, temperature, and door close, They also show how much battery power left. Do on occassion disconnect from base unit, but could be my location of the base unit. Even when it has show disconnected it would still let me know there was a warning. Like how small it is. The curved edges make it more difficult if you have to route out some of door molding for positioning.

Used this device to automate the lights in the pantry. Setup and installation was super easy and now, the pantry lights comes on once the door is open and off when the door is closed. The device helped me to solve two issues, one, ensuring that the pantry lights are turned off when not being used and two, ensuring that the door is closed. Extremely happy with this purchase and highly recommend this without reservation.

We are very happy with our SmartThings sensor We were a long time Lowe's Iris user and when Lowe's decided they didn't want to be in the security business any longer we had to find another system that would work best with our existing system. SmartThings was easy to install and it integrated well with our existing devices. This multipurpose sensor has a lot built into it.

This thing is handy, I used it as a sensor to tell me if my garage is open or closed, and as a side effect of having it there I can see what the temperature is. I think this could be used for a lot of different purposes. Only problem is that it loses its connection with the hub pretty often, and I have to physically take the battery out and put it back in to fix it.

I would rate SmartThings a 5 but it lacks in one area, and, it's important. There is no way to arm or disarm the system outside of the APP. SmartThings needs to listen to the people that buy this system and get either a FOB or KEYPAD to perform a simple function to arm or disarm. My experience with Samsung is that they don't listen to the consumer, at all.

Works for multiple things, i have one in my mailbox, and just the sensor, not the magnetic part, u can use them in otherways, like i use it for vibrartion with acelometer on my mail box, works great to tell me when mail comes. Also on most of my doors i use the temp monitor besides just if the door is opened or closed. Connected to my thermostat.

I'm always second guessing whether I put the garage door down. I won't admit how many times I've turned around the car to go check. Now I know if it's closed simply by checking on my phone that the sensor is closed... also have one on the freezer door which is handy as it doesn't always stay closed if ice is building up. Totally cool little gizmos

Easy to attach to smartthings hub. Placing sensor on flat door/window surfaces that align is easy, but when they don't a little creativity is required. Range between sensor and hub is impressive. I would have never imagined that the downstairs sensor would ever link with the upstairs smartthings hub, but it does and has without a problem.

I was a little leery because of my experience with the 1st generation multi sensor. It had horrible range & was a pain to connect. No such issues with this model. I've got it on my shed door & it hasn't lost the signal yet. The build quality is a bit better too. It does seem to drain the battery a bit, but I can live with that.

I've got this hooked up to SmartThings of course, but also have a notification through IFTTT to notify me of the freezer I threw this inside of raises past a certain temperature because the GCFI circuit pops from time to time when the power goes out. This helps me know that it has popped and I need to reset it before my frozen food thaws.

We’ve installed this on our back door. We have small kids and a pool in our back yard. We have this sensor paired with our SmartThings hub and echo. We’ve programmed the sensor with our echo. Once the door is open our echos—upstairs and downstairs—tells us when the door is open. This is envaluable to us for such a small price tag
