Best external drive I've ever owned.

Samsung - T7 Shield 2TB External SSD Drive Interface USB 3.2 Solid State Drive – Black I found the Samsung external SSD to be very fast and reliable. It is smaller than most external drives and comes with both a USB C and a USB A cable. It is wrapped in a rubber like case. When testing on my main PC the read and write speeds were about half of what they should be. My main computer is 2 years old but has specs that should support the full speed of the drive. I then tested it on a brand-new computer, it got the full stated read and write speeds. So, by conclusion I can assume my main computer is not as up to date as I think. I went back to my main computer and wrote a 6 GB file to the drive. It wrote that file in about 4 seconds. That same file would take about 20 seconds to write to one of my other external “normal” drives. Both my main computer and my new computer have NVME SSD’s as their main storage. So the discrepancy from main to new must be in the USB ports. After seeing the difference in speed, I am now considering adding an updated USB card to my main computer. Even though my main computer states USB 3.2 on the box, I’m willing to bet that was just a selling point and they never really intended to get that fully implemented. Looking at my ports in computer management they state USB 3.1, so the box for the computer is just wrong. It was not really a fair test, my main computer has had 2 years’ worth of programs put on it. Anything in the world could be messing with it. That’s why I tested on a brand-new one. Nothing installed that it didn’t come with out of the box. I will be slowly replacing my old external drives with this type. And possibly adding a new USB card as well. Time is money, don’t need to be waiting on file transfers any longer than needed.

I don't get what's so special about the shield part but I haven't been in a situation in which I and this hard drive survive, so more on that one that happens. Now down to the other basics, easy to connect and ridiculously fast, in the past I've had trouble with external hard drives and their speed because I want to access the information right away. Take nothing away from a good external hard disk drive, but just nothing beats and SSD drive. My windows 11 computer recognized it right away. Did a mild install of whatever minor software need it to be on the computer and then I put it to the test with video and music. So not only the loading but the quality was definitely all there. I'm considering buying another one for my PlayStation 5, but my desktop needed the attention in terms of more hard drive space at the time. It's very pretty and design and lives up to its beauty and its performance. Not much more you can ask. SSD drives should be the standard going forward, and when you buy this and connect it, you'll feel just like I'm feeling.

I have been using the drive for the past week while I was out of town. I had some huge files I needed to be editing and updating. A huge training presentation which required a multitude of images and actions. I was able to store the presentation and files on the T7 and when I launched the presentation the images appeared flawlessly as if they were on the built in MacBook drive. I was very impressed with how smooth everything went. I made edits at a location away from wifi and internet service without any issues. Sometimes when you don't have access to wifi and you need to work with files offline which has many photos and images, you need a storage device which doesn't take space on a limited drive on your laptop. I am now glad that I purchased a laptop with a small harddrive because the drive is very small and portable. Easy to put in my case and take with me. Plugs in with the USB-C connection and is ultrafast. Love the size and the look, very sleek, no-one even noticed that I had a small harddrive which I placed on the table behind the laptop. I plan on using it to place music on and play in my car on my weekend trip to KC. Can't wait to load it up and then let it play my favorite songs. It fits nicely in my car storage unit right next to the usb-c port. Not afraid of carrying this drive wherever I go.

This tiny external ssd is lightning fast. It comes with a usb a to c cable and usb c to c connection for even quicker transfers. The speeds are great hitting almost 1000/mbs transfer speeds. This is also a great little drive for console storage. I'm using it currently on the ps5 and it's great for holding storage of my ps5 games. You can't play them directly from the drive but thats a PS5 limitation and not a limitation of the drive. The drive itself is very lightweight and smaller than you would imagine. You can definitely tuck this in your pocket and go somewhere with it. It also feels rugged in the external design that you don' have to worry that if you dropped it, it would still be ok. Plugging into the PC on the usb a or c cable let's it pop right up in windows and ready to use right away. I ran some test transfers to and from the drive they exceeded my expectations. You can till immediately that you are getting an nvme drive and not just a standard m2 sata drive. Overall if you are looking for an external SSD with lightning fast speed you will not be disappointed by this.

Excellent small drive for long-term storage

This is a solid drive to use. I have recently been prepping to record music in a studio, and they recommended having a pair of T7 drives to store the master recordings, so these seem to be the gold standard for the recording industry. I cannot comment on the “shield” aspect of this drive, as I haven’t thrown it against a wall or dropped it just to test it, but it is a comfort to know that the files should be safe for a long time. Physically, it is a very nice touch that the exterior is rubberized, making it much more difficult to drop than the plain metal cases of the non-shield version of the T7. You also get a USB3 to type-C cable to connect to your computer or hub. Transfer speeds seem to be good, though I'm not an expert on what to expect. I'm interested in using the drive for long-term storage, so the SSD should be better than a standard spinning HD which is more delicate and susceptible to magnetic interference and such. Overall, this is a great little drive, giving about 2TB of storage in the size of a credit card, just about 1cm thick.

The Samsung - T7 Shield 2TB External SSD Drive comes in a tiny package, but offers enormous storage in SSD technology. 2TB of storage in the size of a stack of 6 credit cards. Thin, compact, and fast storage for on the go and for anything you need to add more memory. Perfect for the newer style computers and laptops where they have sealed systems, such as Macbooks, and you need more storage. Works with Mac, PC, Xbox, and other devices. I found this device to be a perfect match for my on-the-go office needs. Using my Macbook (256GB), I needed more storage, but could not update the laptop itself. The size is perfect as it easily fits into my bag or pocket. The outer covers adds a slip-resistant affect and ensures that it won't slid across your dash or desk and will be ready when and where you need it. Small and compact - Perfect! PROS - Samsung quality and innovation - Brand recognition you can trust - Easy plug-and-play design - Works for a variety of uses and OS - Rubberized exterior - anti-skid CONS - Nothing at this time

I use this as my Time Machine backup disk. Far faster than the HDD I was using before, which became so slow under the most recent Mac file system that it was effectively unusable. This is smaller than you would expect, very light, very portable, and the rubberized surface feels more durable than a plastic enclosure. It's nice not to have to worry about a spinning platter going bad or being tossed around in a bag.

I’ve been a fan of the Samsung T-series external hard drives for some time now…they’re commonly regarded as among the fastest portable SSDs you can buy, and while the price is not trivial, they’ve been in the space for some time and have demonstrated decent reliability. The T7 Shield is another portable SSD from Samsung with a sort of “encrypt” function which optionally locks down the hard drive (provided you install the Samsung software) with a password. It is cross platform capable, supported on Windows, Mac (although not iOS, sort of) and Android. Without the software, it is just an external hard drive. It has a rugged, rubberized design and comes with two USB-C cables (one A to C and one C to C). As such, without the software, it can be used on virtually any platform supporting external storage (including iOS). With the software, and assuming the drive is locked down, only the read-only partition shows up on iOS devices. The only way to unlock the drive is with the software and the password, and without the password any stored data is inaccessible (it would be a pain if you forget the password, so make sure you store it in a vault or can remember it). When connecting the drive while it is “locked,” without unlocking it your computer will show a read-only partition with the installation media…so you won’t have to worry about being in front of a computer without the software installed. The software is super basic - allowing you to name the drive (although that doesn’t show up in the naming of the partition), and to turn on and off the drive lock. It’s a relatively simple installation unless you use a modern Mac. On a Mac, you need to boot to system security settings (something that I would bet most casual Mac users have never done) and adjust what kind of software is permitted for installation on your computer. It’s fine that it has to happen that way, but I really think the instructions for this should be included with the device. Other than the somewhat irregular installation requirements for Mac users, there isn’t a lot to complain about here. The price at $239 is in line with what I’d expect to pay for Samsung’s drives (considering their speed capabilities) currently, and having added functionality allowing locking down access to the drive is a nice bonus.

I have used several different external drives over the years and this is fastest yet! With this being a solid state drive, it gets super fast speeds which is great. This external drive is very light and compact and is surrounded by a protector that feels great to hold and is sturdy. This drive is really solid and well-built, so it should hold up great in any situation thrown at it. In the box, you get a USB C to USB C cable as well as a USB C to USB A cable so you can connect this to any computer. I have used various different solid state drives over the years and have always been impressed with Samsung’s drives. They make great solid state drives (both internal and external) and I definitely consider them to be a leader in this space. This drive does not disappoint and lives up to Samsung’s record for making reliable, fast, and great quality solid state drives. The only downside to this drive is the cost. Solid state drives get very expensive for storing a lot of files, so if you need storage space beyond 2 TB, it becomes less practical to solely use solid state storage. But for situations where you need or want fast file transfer, you really cannot beat this drive. This is an excellent external solid state drive that I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for fast external solid state storage! The sturdiness and rugged features (drop resistance and IP65 water resistance) are also a great added bonus to have!

The packaging is minimal and includes the drive and usb c to c and c to a cables. The drive is smaller than others I have, 2.5” x 3.5” x .5”. The rubber like enclosure is one of the best features. I don’t have to worry about scratching it and can put in my bag without worry. The surface has a wavy texture to it, it is easy to grab and more importantly it stays put. Too many slick metal drives slide around, and this one will not. It also provides dust, water, and drop resistance. The material is also supposed to help with heat dissipation. Performance has been great. Running a test in Linux resulted in avg reads of 1GB/s and writes of 980 MB/s. However, the important thing here is that it feels very fast in every day use. Copying large files to and from the drive is really quick and doesn’t interrupt my workflow. There is software included on the drive to install on Mac and Windows, and a link to install the app on Android devices. This allows you to install updates and set a password for the drive. It comes in 3 colors. I have the black, but the blue and beige also look nice. The large 2TB capacity is also great to have. Overall, Samsung is a very trusted name in storage. This drive lives up to that and the rugged materials make it practical for everyday and travel use.

Ruggedly durable, the SSD T7 Shield is built to survive along with your data. The IP65 rating for Dust and Water resistance means you worry less about data integrity failure due to dust and water intrusion. In addition to toughness combined with a shock absorbing, breathable Dynamic Thermal Guard elastomer covering that controls heat to maintain steady performance (no throttling), this SSD is very fast, and quite compact.  I have transferred extremely large files in seconds and am able to carry all of my gaming or photo / video editing files with me when going to a meetup with friends or out in the field. On my system with USB 3.2 Gen 2 and PCIe® NVMe™ (10Gbps) it has sequential read/write speeds twice as fast as my older SSDs - your milage may very. I have used it on Windows, MacOS and iOS and it should work on basically all of the common platforms, and comes with USB Type C-to-C and Type C-to-A cables allowing USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 functionality. You may have to reformat the drives for your system. I got the black 2TB version and love the way it looks! The included Samsung Portable SSD 1.06
Samsung Magician Software is great for benchmarking. It also has AES 256-bit hardware encryption for security. It is small enough to carry in a shirt pocket. I love it!

This device is simple to use. I also didn't think it was going to be as small as it was. I have Apples ecosystem of technology and use the devices in every day life and they all perform some type of task differently. My point being... Apple implemented a new feature for the iPhone 16 pro max camera and now you can record in 4k 120/60 FPS. You cannot record on iPhone storage so you will need an external ssd like this ssd that'll plug into the phone to use that feature. As follows: Plug into iPhone. Enable 4k 120/60 recording in camera settings on iPhone. After you get done recording, it automatically stores photos/videos directly to the ssd. In the camera app with the iPhone still plugged into the ssd, you will see the external storage icon that you can click and then have the option to manually send items to your usual iPhone photos storage location. Plug it into the MacBook Pro and open ssd and the footage came through perfectly. It's the easiest thing I've used in a while that works! 2 TB oughta be enough for me! They didn't have 4 TB in stock... Just remember that before you unplug the ssd from your computer, click the "eject" button to avoid possible file corruption.
