Faster than internal SSD on M2 MacBook Air
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The SanDisk Pro-G40 Thunderbolt SSD is an external drive for those who need uncompromising performance from their storage devices. Connected to my M2 MacBook Air, performance is simply astonishing and up to 50% faster than the internal SSD that my Mac came equipped with from Apple! Thunderbolt enables PCIe performance so it shouldn't be a surprise that the drive can hit 2700 MB/s reads. What I love about the PRO-G40 is that it also offers regular USB-C 3.2 backwards compatibility for use with devices that don't have open Thunderbolt ports. It does come with a short TB3 cable in the box which is a plus. As a byproduct of having internal NVMe level performance, the SanDisk Professional drive is a great choice for those who work on UHD+ video projects. My previous external SSD was a USB-C 3.2 model which seemed pretty fast at 900 MB/s R/W performance when I got it about 2 years ago. However, when working on video projects I often found myself copying the input files to my internal storage when possible, so I was working off my internal drive with its higher performance and maximizing the speeds when it came time to export the finished video to my larger external SSD. With the PRO-G40, this extra step is eliminated as the drive is both larger and faster than my internal storage. Especially when stitching dozens of small clips, this drive can easily handle anything you throw at it. The PRO-G40 is also built like an absolute tank and can easily survive being tossed in a camera bag for an outdoor trip. The case seems to offer substantial heat dissipation capability as well. I say this because it gets warm quite quickly and doesn't seem to drop performance by much when hitting it with lots of writes. Finally, the drive comes formatted to work with Macs for Time Machine and is thus incompatible with non Apple devices out of the box. I've left mine formatted as APFS as I haven't used Time Machine for a few years, but I may eventually reformat for compatibility with my Android phone and Windows PCs. Just something to keep in mind if you plan to use this drive with a Windows computer.

Crazy fast! Lost my excuse of taking a break.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.WHAT? SanDisk Professional - PRO-G40 SSD 2TB External Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C NVMe Portable SSD in black. Out of the box this SSD drive is preformatted in APFS, a macOS drive format that natively supports Mac Time Machine backups. Plugging into my Mac required no more than confirming that I approved of the accessory, as is typical with Macs. The newest iteration of SanDisk’s Professional Drive is compatible with both USB 3.2 Gen2 1000MB/s read and write speeds and Thunderbolt 3’s 2700MB/s read and 1900MB/s write speeds. How well it meets these specification I’ll talk about in a few minutes. But, moving my movies around takes seconds, not a snack break anymore. WHY? When I’m operating last year’s Apple M1 Pro (14” 2021) with its 1TB drive, using a typical external hard drive can feel sluggish. Yes, we’re spoiled. I’ve been creating videos and working in Photoshop for 30 years, so I can easily remember an over-night rendering task. Even more contemporary drives will take hours to back up my MacBook Pro. The current M1 pro configuration with its Thunderbolt4/USB-C ports begs for a drive that can support some fraction of its potential 40GB/s data transfer. This drive gets a whole lot closer than most other drives to Thunderbolts 40Gb/s maximum speed. The advertised transfer rate 2700MB/sec represents over 50% (2.7GB/s / 5GB/s) of Thunderbolt’s top speed. PERFORMANCE? This is a solid, attractive, rugged drive that’s easy to handle, even outdoors, because of its ruggedized, rubberized feel and crushproof, rustproof case. I’ve avoided packing my drives on anything but extended trips, but the Pro-G40 gives me confidence to take it more places. There’s even a Thunderbolt 3 cable in the box to save you the frustration of shopping and validating the claims for all those cables you find online. The Drive is pre-formatted in APFS, just like my Mac laptop. All my MacPro ports are Thunderbolt 4, so I don’t need to make a conscious effort to connect to the right one. But for others, just be attentive to this crucial detail. My file transfer times dropped dramatically. I copy mostly large photo and music files from my MacBook Pro M1 to my backup and work drives. Where I once took a break and looked for a snack, I now have to expect those transfers will be completed quickly. I’ve moved 4K movies from my computer SSD to the SANDISK in under a minute. An entire 60Gb of music videos was moved onto this drive faster than I could untangle my mouse cable. The drive operates at a reasonably hot temperature when pushed but this is not unexpected under continuous use. There aren’t a huge selection of drives who have this set of features, proven performance, and can reach these speeds. I can recommend this SANDISK PRO-G40 for any power user.

This may be the first drive I have ever used that exceeded its claims! I was able to really push this drive as I am a creative professional and I am always looking for fast external storage for the colossal file sizes I work with every day. The drive’s compact and portable design makes it easy to carry around and use on-the-go. It's perfect for those who need to transfer large files quickly and securely, without having to worry about the device getting damaged. With its P68 dust- and water-resistant rating, it can withstand harsh environmental conditions and accidental drops, ensuring your data remains safe and secure. It's particularly useful for video editors, photographers, and other creatives who work with large files, as it allows them to transfer data quickly and efficiently, without sacrificing performance. One of the best features of the SanDisk Professional PRO-G40 SSD is its Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, which provides incredibly fast transfer speeds. I was able to hit almost 2900MB/s read and 2300MB/s write speeds—THAT IS NUTS. This makes it an ideal choice for professionals who work on tight deadlines and require quick turnaround times. Additionally, the USB-C NVMe interface ensures compatibility with a wide range of devices, making it easy to transfer files across different platforms. Another great thing about this product is its durability. It's built to last and can withstand rough handling, making it an ideal choice for professionals who work in the field. Thunderbolt to shine! Excellent!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The reliable 2tb I take with me! The 2 things important to me in an external hard drive is 1) how fast is it, and 2) is it reliable. That's all I really care about. If i'm bringing 2tb worth of data, this drive better be able to withstand a few things, and be able to maintain the advertised speed. With that said, I'm happy to report this is a reliable brand and the product is reliable. I've uploaded some photos to give people a sense of the size of this thing, fits in the palm of my hand, smaller than a PS5 controller. And I posted the speed. The speed is where it gets interesting. I'm able to get USB-C speeds on the PC, which was just over 1000MB/s but the Thunderport is where it shines, you can see the write >3000MB/s and read >2400MB/s. This was just a quick plug and play, I didn't do any optimization, tinkering, etc. Just plug and go. I would caution that if you do plan on using this with the thunderbolt on Mac computers, it's just a plug and play. If you are using this on a PC, make sure you have the Thunderbolt drivers if you plan to use the thunderport, if not it will default to USB-C speeds, which is a little slower. Double check your computer, double check your drivers. As for reliability, I do some drone film editing, always on the go. I've dropped this once. It's sat in the heat >92 F degrees that day, still a speedy little hard drive. Love it. Trust Sandisk!

Incredibly Fast. Best Option for Extra Mac Storage
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love my Mac but Apple's pricing for extra storage is... well... let's just say unreasonable. If you are creative, work on video, etc. you are kind of stuck paying Apple. This is because as much as we all love the cloud, working on large complex video files locally is still the best option. Enter the SanDisk Professional Pro-G40 SSD. All black, with, it looks premium. It also comes with a short thunderbolt cable so it's ready to go out of the box. Built for your Mac, this connects using Thunderbolt and aside from a brief "permissions" pop up on my Mac M2, it seamlessly integrates with your Mac as an additional drive. So it was already formatted. And it's fast! Like blindingly fast - file transfers, completed before I can even blink. Unarchiving multi GB files on the Sandisk G40, as fast as doing them locally on your Mac. I have edited video natively on the drive and played it back without a stutter, blip, issue, or lag. I even pressure tested it by playing a large video file with DRM off the drive back though iTunes - and even that worked flawlessly. I just cannot fault the Sandisk Pro G40. In a few hours of use, I also didn't notice any real temperature increase, the drive got a little warm but not hot. I am impressed.Would definitely recommend, especially if you want extra storage for you Mac but don't want to pay Apple directly.

Astoundingly fast, and sustains transfer rate. WOW
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There is no downside to this drive, whatsoever. Literally. I have a couple Type C flash drives and another Thunderbolt 3 (TB3) drive, and they don't even come close, and I've got an older generation TB3 laptop that I've been using it with. I tested it with a longer cable that is rated for USB-C 3.2, and didn't notice any degradation in throughput or response. I'm sure this wouldn't be the case for all cables, but I think I'll try to stick with the cable that came with the drive since it's most definitely rated for TB3. Physically, the drive is pleasing with the rubberized shell and chamfered corners. It feels solid, and such that heat dissipation should be good. I've not had an issue of a "hot drive" from sustained read or write. I took some pics of packaging. It was shipped in a padded envelope, which is sufficient. The drive is nestled in an inner cardboard shell with the documentation and Thunderbolt cable. I didn't have any issues getting into the package, which is a plus. The other photos are to show how small the drive is, as it will fit in a shirt pocket or the little pockets in my backpack quite easily. .

Amazingly Small and Fast
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For the past several years I have been using a 1TB disk hard drive to backup my computer. It has done its job, but it typically takes hours to complete a backup. In addition, the device is bulky and can be loud when activated. I was curious to see how this product compared. I was pleased to see that the process which usually takes my older device hours only took 30 minutes for this device. It also completed the backup so quietly, I had turned my attention away from my computer and forgot that I was even backing it up. Accessing videos is much quicker than my old disk hard drive and saving edited files occurs almost immediately. The size is also quite small and easily portable. Another pro to this device is its rubber backing, which keeps it from being dropped. The case is designed with metal features that give it more heft than my old plastic, blocky external hard drive. In short, I would recommend this device to anyone needing to back up an average-sized hard drive quickly and efficiently.

Fast, efficient, and reliable.
|Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There is nothing to dislike about this product. Its compact and packs a punch. I use it to run MacOS as the internal harddrive is corrupted in my iMac. It runs the MacOS smoothly, with no lag and the SSD doesn't run hot. Great product, great price and easy fix to my problem.

Blazingly Fast
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had no idea that my 2017 iMac was capable of 40 Gbps data transfer speeds until I purchased this SanDisk SSD and hooked it up to my Thunderbolt 3 USB-C port. The performance is amazing and absolutely worth it. Hopefully the drive proves to be reliable as I have read some reviews where this particular model has failed not long after being put into service, but I've had no issues with it myself after two short weeks of use. My only real negative comment is that the supplied USB-C cable is too short at around 6 inches in length. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this drive, especially for those lucky enough to possess a Thunderbolt 3 (or higher) device.

Perfect for storing or backing up media library
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Fast and compact with plenty of space! I love that I can slip it into my carry-on and have my entire media library available on trips. At nearly $270, the SanDisk is substantially more expensive than other comparably-sized drives. But you're also paying for the speed of Thunderbolt 3 connectivity -- a good investment if you're streaming or transferring lots of data.

A Pro Drive for Anyone and Super Easy to Use
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’m astonished by how quick uploads and transfers were to and from the Pro-G40! I wasn’t hesitant on its performance because I’ve always trust my most precious photos to San Disk’s products. Last November my 13 year old Frenchie passed away. It’s been so tough grieving him and every picture I have of him I’m scared to lose. I wanted the Pro G-40 for saving his photos but also for my trips for some contract work I do. About 6-8 times a year I travel with my company to work on social media for our brands. Last October I found myself in Santiago, Chile managing hundreds of photos on a small SD card and it was horrible. My next trip will be a lot easier to maneuver through photos and data using the Pro G-40. The body is really well built with matte rubber accents, smooth edges, a light case, and best of all a USB C cable to help facilitate those fast transfers. I have the 2 TB Pro G-40 and the set up was as easy as plugging it into my MacBook. My next project is to learn how to manage the photos, organize them, and archive them. I’d love to surprise my grandma with all of her photos from the 50s-70s that she has in memory books by scanning them to my G-40 and adding them to her iPad for Mother’s Day! A family member said they hadn’t seen me this dedicated to a project in a while so you can say, I’m having a lot of fun with the Pro G-40!

Love the read and write speed
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When I’m backing up my 4K footage OTG, this purchase was worth it. Wanted a thunderbolt 3 portable drive for some time. Great quality and seems very durable. I did purchase a longer Thunderbolt 3 cable to use it with my setup. You can see in the pictures of this product they show it is connected to a coiled up cable. Big difference compared to the included 6” cable.

Very happy I chose this drive for my Mac!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great drive! I use it on my Mac Mini M4, plugged in to the back ports to use it as a Thunderbird 3 drive. This drive can get hot, so I came up with a simple solution to help it run cooler. I grabbed an old metal iPhone holder I wasn't using and lay across in there. Being up in the air, it runs cooler than lying on my desk. I took my summer tower fan and have it off to the side of my desk, rotating to keep me and my gear cool. It's working very well. When it first appears on your desktop, you'll probably have to open the Apple Disk Utility and Mount the drive. If you ever want to unplug the drive, either Eject the drive, or turn off your Mac, and then unplug it. I would buy this again!

Extremely fast, simple and reliable!
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As a Mac user, I use external SSDs for a variety of reasons. They work well as my Time Machine backup, in addition to storing my VMs for Parallels and other external data storage needs. And, I gotta say... this one blows all of the others out of the water in terms of speed, simplicity and reliability - but especially speed! I could not believe what a significant difference the additional speed this SSD would make. I've never had Time Machine backups finish so fast as they do on this. Highly recommend!

Fast & Warm.
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This thing is extremely fast (which can’t be said of my WiFi connection. It does get pretty warm after a while, but that appears to be the norm in this and other similar drives and review of others who have had it for a while are reassuring as far as longevity. It made its connection quickly on my MacBook Pro with M1. It’s pretty compact, but can’t help but wish for even smaller in the future. While I’m wishing: Just as fast, but wireless, would be nice, too. Anyway, expensive but worth it if your situation demands extra high speeds!
