Good NAS for shared music, photos, videos

Pros: Easy to set up compared to other network attached storage devices (NAS). Shares are easy to create and password protected; each user can have their own shared folder. Cheap, easy to use NAS and backup device. Best for someone with lots of movies, photos, documents and apps they plan on sharing with the family.
Cons: If you give another user access to your share they have access to ALL your folders/files. You can't set permissions for access to some folders but not other. Not so good for maintaining privacy. Also, Windows makes it very difficult to access more than one share - on the same drive - at a time, even if you map each share to a different drive letter (it can be done but plan on spending time reading the documentation).

2TB of media on this Seagate Central STCG2000100 personal Cloud storage external hard drive, offers the same easy solution to shared digital library and access it securely over the Internet.
Note:
the admin guides illustrate a different external access vendor...which took a few minutes to find new vendor solutions.
The access email from creation via RJ45 network setup...is not personalized to giving other access accounts for remote logon. You should inform the enduser...as most will delete the email.
performance and remote access is based on your IPS connection speeds...so larger PIC, Video & music files can be slow to render if you on a 20mb down and 5mb up.
For a start, remote access drive this is a nice solution, supports smart TV's media sync - However there is only a 4 user access max. Before you are charged extra money per remote access user creation.
- Users can allow access to public data for friends and Family.
Note:
USB - to USB connector did not come with the product, only the RJ45 connector was included

I purchased this item after I returned a previous non seagate device. I have always purchased seagate hard drives in the past and I know they will last and work properly for as long as I have them. This device performs outstandingly and is easily accessible from any device anywhere. I can stream movies and music perfectly from this device on my tv using chrome cast.

So far we love this product. It has been great! The setup was pretty easy and I was very impressed with how quickly I was able to get myself backing up out of the box. That being said, I am fairly tech savvy, and when I tried setting up backing up my computer over the wireless network I was having major issues. Come to find out I didn't install the desktop application. I must have missed that step. Once I did that it worked like a charm, but when I looked on the forums, there were no answers on that. I had a hard time finding any information on any setting on the router I might need to change or even that it was just the desktop app. That is more just advice to the next person rather than a complaint. Other than that, the initial backup is quite a bit slower even on gigabit wired network than a USB 2.0 or firewire backup. After the initial back up, it is really quick. We have also had a hard time getting the iTunes library pushing through. We really like this device and would recommend it.

We were using sharepoint to hold our client documents, but had problems manipulating them. We were able to upload them quickly and have access at the office and at home. It does let you know that a file is open by another user (which is a problem if they don't save and close and leave for the day) but hardly the fault of the drive. We can probably use this drive for another 5-6 years with its capacity and our storage needs. Easy to set up, gets recognized, is secure from a remote place and runs fast enough to allow efficiency in our work flow. I would recommend anyone who has the need to have files in a central location for multiple users get this storage device!

Seagate Central 2TB External Ethernet Shared Storage drive is very reliable and easy to use. It was relativley simple to install and works great with my PC, iMac, iPad, and iPhone. It meets my expectations for a network drive and does exactly what I wanted from an external network drive.
Prior to purchasing the Seagate Central, I tried two other drives that failed to perform as advertised. One of them, in fact, caused signicicant software compatability problems with my PC and had identification problems with both the PC amd Mac. Both performed extremely poorly. I took one back and exchanged one of them for the Seagate Central.
This is a great drive that is reasonably priced for all it does.

I couldn't beat the price for this unit. but I am still trying to figure out how to navigate through all the menus just to send files to storage. I do love that I can access my files on my phone from another location. I just dislike that it will only allow me to play certain video files and not all especially my movies for the kids on road trips.

The Seagate was very easy to set up and access. I am able to view all contents from anywhere. Photos automatically uploaded and I have uploaded documents. It is great as the wife and I can access our separate account or shared account with the ability to add additional accounts / users.
There is just one thing I dislike. I had to download 2 Seagate apps as one is better at viewing pictures and one is better at viewing and uploading documents. I wish that the apps where designed a little better / more user friendly but we are still able to find what we are looking for.
The fact that you can access the storage over WIFI is easy. A good feature is that if you are not connected to WIFI it will ask if you what to connect over the internet as additional charges for data can apply. So if you are watching your data plan or have unlimited at least you will know.

Overall, I like this product. Works easily with my PCs and Roku device. Only reason I am knocking a star off is the case seems totally enclosed and no way to open it to replace the hard drive if/when it fails. Hopefully that won't be for a while though (storage in the future will probably be all in the cloud anyway)

Love it now that it's set up, though I had to have my tech kid set it up and teach me to use it (I still don't know how to use it online--and I'm pretty good with technology). I recommend it to all my friends and offer my son to set up.

After trying to find numerous ways to share files on my home network this is by far the best product I've purchased. Assuming the hard drive lasts I have no problems recommending this drive. The cloud functions are decent. Nothing special but it all works perfect for me.

I recommend this product over WD's MyCloud and I will compare why. I was able to setup 3PCs and 1MAC Seagate Central within an hour. WD's MyCloud took me hours to setup, because of its clunky backup software; even after it was setup it wouldn't backup properly. Seagate's user interface was easier to navigate, this interface is way more responsive and hasn't crashed on me in comparison. I have not used the multimedia sharing portion of it, I only use it for data backup and over the internet to upload/download files. I didn't see or find what happens when the drive becomes full; I assume the user will have to data manage and to delete older files, but I could be wrong. I recommend this product over the competitor for its ease of use.

I bought this device to serve as (a) a back up for all the computers at home and (b) as a media server for shared content. Right off the bat, however, I found that the data rates I got over our home WiFi network was 10 MBPS or less. This was nothing to sneeze at, oh about 10 years ago, but in this day and age of 10Gig Ethernet and 5Gig USB 3.0, this seemed truly pathetic! By no means could we fault Seagate for this, of course, but I'm just commenting on the VERY IDEA of a NAS in this era of the Cloud.
Geek that I am, I set up the device to work with a Mac, a desktop PC, and several Windows laptops. This was by no means challenging to me; however, I can't say this for the average computer user. This device will stretch the limts of the average Joe's computer fluency (NFS, DHCP, Windows Share, IP Addresses, drive mounting, file system.. etc, offering a mind-boggling array of buzzwords and acronyms, ALL of which you should have a working knowledge of to some extent or the other). So, the question is: why bother? Dropbox/ windows cloud storage/ google drive offer adequate (and easy to use) backup options. Moreover, who serves their own media these days? (In the era of netflix, hulu, spotify, and sling TV.) This will entai a change in lifestyle/philosophy but that's bound to happen sooner if not later. So, if I were you, I wouldn't bother with NAS at all.
Finally, one redeeming factor: It is tautologous that anything you upload to the cloud will eventually find its way to the hackers and the Paparazzi. So, if you've something on your hard drive or media server that you'd BY NO MEANS want criminals and extortionists to get hold of easily, then NAS is your option. However, if your content is indeed this sensitive, why put it on the Internet for all and sundry to hack into? Unless you're a security geek, do not expect your NAS to be secure either. The best way to prevent people on the Internet to hack into your content is not to put it there in the first place!

Since a home networked computer finally died I've been trying for a couple years now to find something to take its place. This works exactly as described. I can easily access it from any of my networked laptops locally. Online access works pretty good too but I think they need to improve the ease of use. I would like it better if when you navigate around in your music library it remembers where you were when you went into a folder. The way it works now when you navigate back you go right to the top of the list and have to scroll back down which takes time when streaming. It would be even better if it saved at least the last state of your folders on the local device to save from having to reload each time.
Other than that it is easily accessible. Before I bought this I was using external drives attached to my network. That works ok but sometimes you have to wake up the drive to get access by typing in the network address. My less tech savvy family would never adapt to that. This seems to stay accessible and can always be browsed to under Networks.

This external drive by Seagate is a pretty solid buy. It was very easy to set up and the it was an excellent deal for the price that I paid. The drive does not support USB, but only works thru a LAN connection. The device included software from Seagate which was also very helpful and easy to use.
