This is my second Home Security System from SimpliSafe that I got for another property, and its contents are fairly similar to the one I have at my main residence. This kit comes with four entry sensors, one motion sensor, control keypad, and base station. It’s a great system for a small home or apartment and is expandable. With a monitoring plan, it can contact emergency services if there’s a break-in or other emergency. A 1-month professional monitoring trial is included, and the monthly plan is contract-free, allowing you to activate or cancel your subscription at any time.
While there aren’t any cameras in this bundle, you can add to the system with SimpliSafe’s indoor and outdoor cameras as well as hazard sensors for smoke, carbon monoxide, moisture, noise, and temperature. Devices are easy to add to the system using a one-touch pairing button. Setup is straightforward using the SimpliSafe mobile app, and the system connects to the cloud via WiFi for remote control and automatic updates. After registering, you’ll first add your base station and create a 4-digit Master PIN code. The Master PIN is used for arming/disarming the system and changing settings, while user PINs only allow the former. If disarming the system with the app, you won’t have to enter a code.
If you prefer app-less setup, that’s possible by connecting the peripherals via the keypad and linking them to the base station. All settings for the devices can be set directly on the keypad. The keys on the pad are backlit making them visible in the dark, and you’ll navigate the menu using the clickable sides of the screen. Interestingly, the keypad has an accelerometer so the screen lights up when you handle it, and the wall mounting bracket is a slide-in holster, allowing you to take the keypad with you to another room or hide it.
There are various levels of paid subscriptions, from self-monitoring with camera recordings (but no professional monitoring), to those that provide 24/7 access to emergency dispatch (police, fire, medical), AI detection of threats, and live agent monitoring and intervention services. Plans that include camera recordings allow unlimited cloud storage of footage from up to 10 cameras for 30 days, and professional monitoring plans use a built-in cellular connection (SIM card included) plus backup battery that lets the system contact emergency services even if your system goes offline or loses power. Just note that without a subscription emergency dispatch will not be contacted in the event of an intrusion or sensor trigger.
Placing and setting up the various included sensors takes only a few minutes with the adhesive stickers. I like that these make the devices removable and won’t damage your wall paint, perfect for renters. You can also mount them more permanently using the included screws. The motion sensor performs best when installed within 100 ft of the base station, and its field of view is 90° with a 30 ft range, giving you whole room coverage when placed in the corner of a rectangular room. I found this placement accurately detected when I entered or moved about my living room. There’s a pet mode setting on the motion sensor that prevents them from triggering, which is also useful if you use robot vacuums.
The entry sensors can be placed on doors and windows as long as one part moves away from the other when the entry point is ‘opened.’ It doesn’t matter which side of the two-piece sensor moves and which one remains stationary, and they can be installed vertically or horizontally. I found the two halves don’t need to be exactly flush as long as they are within 2 inches each other. When triggered, a chime sounds on the base station.
All the sensors and the keypad have replaceable batteries that are easily accessed for replacement when they reach the end of their life (up to 5 years). While the base station needs to be plugged into the wall, it has re-chargeable backup batteries for when the power goes out; it also immediately announces any power outage through its speaker, which doubles as the built-in siren, which I found to be sufficiently loud and clear (100 dB).
As a security system, you can set it to ‘Home’ or ‘Away’ and ‘Off’. All modes can have separate criteria you define at the device level for actions like sounding the siren, contacting emergency services, and notifications. For example, each of the modes can have different lengths of time for the entry and exit delay when arming and disarming the system. Note that you will always receive a phone call for verification prior to any dispatch action allowing you to cancel it with a verbal “password” in the event of a false alarm. With a subscription, you can also elect to use "secret alerts" that will only send you notifications but not contact emergency services or sound the siren; if forced to disarm the system by an intruder, you can use a Duress PIN which shuts the system off but silently sends a notification to emergency responders.
Overall, this starter kit offers plenty of basic home security measures at an affordable cost. Setup was quick and easy, and the sensors work as expected. I like that there’s remote control and monitoring via the app and various subscription plans, including a free tier to meet your needs and budget. You can expand it with more devices with Simplisafe’s wide range of add-ons including smart locks, doorbell cameras, and panic button, and for larger homes with multiple entrances, it’s easy to add additional keypads or a key fob to arm/disarm the system.

SimpliSafe really has an easy to install system that works based off your home Wi-Fi with a 4G LTE connection for a backup. The main unit also has a battery built in so if you lose power in your home, you will be covered with power and connection. The monthly service is currently $21.99 for the basic service, and I have seen the price increase over the years, but I find that to be a reasonable monthly fee. This kit comes with everything you need to start protecting your home, but you will want to expand it. Inside the box you will find the Base station, keypad, motion sensor, 4 window/entry sensors, and a yard sign. You can very easily expand your system, as I have, to include many more devices. I have purchased about 10 more entry sensors, another motion sensor, a glass breakage sensor, keypad, and some water sensors. So to put it another way, you can add much more to this system. They also have cameras that you can purchase to keep an eye on your home. However, the cameras require the more expensive plan to use them to their full potential, you can just lot into them and view the live view with the cheaper plan. If you have an alert from a motion or door sensor will alert the SimpliSafe staff to call you directly, so be sure to program their number in your phone, then you can either accept the alarm and they will call the police, or you can cancel using your safe word. Other alerts, say from your water sensor, will just send you a text or call you and let you know it has detected water. This has been very helpful on a few occasions when a bathroom toilet has overflown and I was able to stop it before any damage occurred. The SimpliSafe app is also a great tool. You can arm/disarm your system, see the current status, and set up authorized users among many other tools at your disposal. I really have been a fan of the system, and I have recommended it to my in-laws and my family and they have all purchased their own systems and they love it as well.

DIY home security with monitoring options

The SimpliSafe - 7pc Indoor Security System is a DIY security system from SimpliSafe. My first experience with SimpliSafe was almost ten years ago with one of the first at the time products, a doorbell with integrated camera. Having that combination of camera and doorbell was a new concept at the time and Ring also led the way, eventually being bought by Amazon. I always liked the SimpliSafe doorbell camera due to the option to not have a monitoring or cloud service associated with it. These days every consumer electronic item seems to have some type of subscription model, which includes cloud services and that is the case here with this 7-piece home security system. Now I am not going to get into the debate of regarding subscription services other than I am not partial to having multiple subscription services and like some type of local functionality without a subscription of service. For this review I am basing my review on subscribing to their monitoring services since the product comes with a thirty-day trial period. I am not however including a review of their monitoring services.
As for the 7-piece package, it contains a:
- Base station, which is the brains of the system, connecting it to your Wi-Fi system AND having a cellular network backup. (A little research discovered that they use T-Mobile and Verizon networks – the latter being the secondary network of choice). The base station is AC powered with a rechargeable battery backup that will last for twenty four hours in the event of a power failure.
- A single motion sensor [wireless] for detecting movement in your room at up to 35 feet (with a pet mode to prevent false alarms). This sensor uses a CR-123 replaceable battery.
- Four entry sensors for either your entry ways (doors) or windows. These sensors use a CR-2032 replaceable battery.
- One wireless keypad used to arm/disarm the system, control and configure. The keypad also has a panic button on the top and a silent alert can be triggered if you enter a configurable panic PIN number. The keypad also has a proximity detector and non numbers light up, all the numbers light up after you press any of the number keys. This keypad uses four replaceable AA batteries.
Setting up the system uses a smartphone app (in my case iOS) and guides you through each step of setting up the base station. The app also guides you through setting up an account (I already had one from previous device). As part of the setup process it guides you on how to and where to place the motion and entry sensors. I had no issues connecting any of the sensors, including one on my front entrance door that was over sixty feet away from the base station. Each configuration confirmation is provided at the base station by a voice indicating successful connection. There are also tones when any of the sensors detect activity. The sound volume for these events can be configured in the app. The app overall is well laid out and gives you all the options you need to manage the system. You can also login via a PC using a web browser and see activity and configuration items.
Overall SimpliSafe has come a long way since my first experience with them almost a decade ago. The monitoring service is a good option to have if you want to deal with a monthly subscription fee. Of course, without a subscription you do have less functionality, but I still see the system as useful.
Pro Tip: You always have the option of only subscribing to the monitoring services during extended periods of travel or when you are going to be away from your home.
Pros:
- Easy setup
- Monitoring available after 30-day trial
- Various other devices can be connected to the base unit including various sensors: water leak, carbon monoxide, smoke/carbon monoxide, temperature
- Support for SimpliSafe wireless outdoor or indoor cameras, SimpliSafe Wireless doorbell with camera.
- Capacity for up to 100 devices/sensors
- Backup cellular connection included with most plans
- Cloud camera recording only plan available if you connect a SimpliSafe camera equipped device (no monitoring)
- Text (with monitoring subscription) and App notifications
Cons:
- Monitoring subscriptions are highly recommended to fully utilize the functionality of the system.
- Relies on cloud recording, no local video storage from SimpliSafe camera you may attach to the system.

This is a great start to getting a home security system setup at your home. I still need to get more sensors but I like the fact there are four open sensors which worked perfect for the three outside doors and one basement window. I know I will need to purchase more sensors, but price wise they are competitively priced.
Setup of this system was a total breeze using the app and included keypad. Simplisafe made this so simple that really anyone could install this system in their home. You will need to create an account with simplisafe but then just fallow along in the app to get your system setup. They even explain how to place the sensors on a door or window. My last system did not talk about this and changing batteries was a pain, but simplisafe explains how to mount so you can easily swap out batteries when the time comes.
I didn't notice that my door is not flush with the trim, and I have about a half inch gap. This gap means that the sensor is not perfectly in line with the magnet. I did some test and there were no issues with functionality and even the app talks about this during setup. I should have paid more attention to the app during setup but I was excited to get everything up and running, but If I would have paid more attention it would have walked me through the issues I created for myself.
I really love that this system comes with a nice yard stake sign and two window stickers. My other system included one small sticker and then wanted to charge to get additional ones. I placed the yard stake by my front door and the window stickers on a backdoor and basement window. The places I thought would be high targets for break-ins. The stickers are bright and noticeable but do hinder the view from my window/doors.
The motion sensor needs to be mounted high up to get a full view of the room. I mounted mine on top of my kitchen cabinet. The great thing about this motion detector is you can select during the setup that you have pets. This way you can set the alarm with animals in the home and the motion sensor will ignore them. My last alarm did not have this function and so whenever we left the house we had to set the alarm to home and armed instead of away. This basically turned off many functions of the alarm that I wanted to have on when we were out but the dogs where home. So thank you simplisafe for including this important feature.
The keypad is more than just a keypad. You can control many different aspects of your system from this keypad. You can see what sensors are open and even add new sensors. Also, the keypad doesn't need to be plugged in and runs on batteries. During the day the keypad is down by the door for easy use, and at nighttime I bring it to my bedroom to use in case of an emergency. There is a red button on top to sound the alarm. I really like that the keypad is portable, and I don't have to buy additional ones like my prior alarm.
The app is also very clean and simple use. The landing page shows you the status of your alarm (off/home/away) and what is selected. You can also change the status from the app just by clicking on what status you want to use. You can also run diagnostics testing as well and review history of doors/windows opening, alarm being turned off, etc
I have not signed up for their professional monitoring. They did include one month free, but I will probably just stick with self-monitoring for now. I have cameras throughout the home so if I get an alert when away I can always check the cameras and make my own judgement call about calling the police if needed.
Overall, the system is easy to use and get setup. I'm glad I ditched my old system and will continue to expand my simplisafe system with more entry sensors, motion sensors, and even add on water sensors, glass break sensors, etc. They really do have all you could need to keep your home safe and secure.

Excellent DIY security system

I’ve been using SimpliSafe since 2017 and it is truly the easiest and best do it yourself security system I’ve ever used. My girlfriend and I recently converted one of her properties to an Airbnb and got this system to give the people who stay a sense of security. For my primary home, since installing it back in 2017 I don’t pay for the monitoring and that’s how we plan to install this system. Even without the monitoring it still gives you peace of mind. My girlfriend’s aunt lives alone and we installed SimpliSafe in her condo and we signed her up for the monitoring and she has been very happy with it. She unfortunately has had a couple of times where she inadvertently triggered the alarm and SimpliSafe promptly reached out to her and even dispatched the police when they couldn’t reach her. So, if you’re considering the monitoring service I can say it is worth it and they do respond.
Installing SimpliSafe is truly a very simple process, especially when you use the app. With the app, it’s easy to name or rename sensors so you know exactly what was triggered or what battery needs replacing. The app allows you also to arm or disarm the system wherever you are, and the timeline will show you all the events like when it was armed, disarmed, something was triggered etc. The one improvement I’d like to see, is for the home base to say what was opened instead of just a beep. So if the front door sensor was triggered it would say front door instead of just a beep. Adding extra sensors or other components is extremely simple even after the system is installed. Though this system doesn’t come with it, if you get the camera, unless you pay for monitoring, you can only use the live view function. So you must pay for monitoring to get recorded playback with the camera. Though there are things I would change about this system or would like to see improved, it’s still the best DIY system I’ve ever tried even after 8 years.

I had one of these systems in my last home but I just recently moved and of course I need another one. The best part by far is how easy this thing is to hook up. First you download the app and you just follow the prompts. It'll ask you to plug this up. Put this here. Put this there and it also comes with install tips. How far to connect something? How close to connect something. The simplicity of this is so amazing. It took me less time to install it than it did the first time. The first time was like 15 minutes. This time was like 8 minutes. Now some small tidbits are for 24/7 monitoring service from Safelite. Of course you have to pay for it on a monthly subscription. This is a good starter kit with a motion sensor that is kind of Hit or Miss from time to time but enough hit that I'm comfortable with it. Other attachments are going to be per the customer so if you need a flood sensor you would buy one. Or if you want to put an emphasis on the doorbell sensor, you'll buy that first. The base doesn't have ethernet connection. It only works with Wi-Fi. That's a small flaw but still noteworthy. If they sold the base separately with ethernet connection, I would be interested that way this doesn't act as a hack point for hackers. Short of that, I love this thing! Definitely want to add on to it and maximize its capability. I highly recommend it.

Overview: I feel safer now that I have SimpliSafe installed in my home. It may not be much but knowing I have something that will alert me if someone breaks in or will wake me up in the middle of the night makes me feel more confident. Installation took me 15 - 20 minutes.
Install: Installation was quick and easy. Forget about using the manual, download the app on iOS or android, create an account, scan the QR code on the bottom of the SimpliSafe base and then the app will give you step by step instructions. The base will update first which did take about 10 minutes (not included in the setup time). The app will guide you on installing and connecting each of your sensors. I installed a door sensor on my front door, back door and my basement door. My motion sensor was installed in a central location in my house so it could capture from a variety of points and angles. The keypad was installed near my back door as this is the entrance I typically use. The app does allow you to put the sensor in pet mode to help elevate any false pet movements. Once everything was installed and I picked my code, my system was ready.
Usage: Once installed and the app has full access to pushing notifications, it’s easy. To be honest, it’s too simple. On the keypad you have three primary buttons including off, home and away. It’s all I use including the number pad. Before I go to bed I select home which activates all my sensor other than the motion sensor. In the morning before I let my dog out I push off, hit my code and the system is off. I do the same thing before I leave my home; however, this time I will click away which activates all sensors. Once I’m home I click off, hit my code and the system is off. Other than that, I don’t mess with it.
I primarily use the keypad. It’s the first thing I see when I enter my home and the last thing I see when I leave. The monitor will inform me of anything irregular on the screen or it will say them out loud. I keep my base in the basement so if you’re not quiet you won’t hear it speak but if the alarm goes off I can still hear it. The keypads screen is not touchscreen but it does serve as a D pad so click the screen physically up, down, left and right will allow you to move through the settings and fields. The keypad is also illuminated and takes 4 standard AA batteries.
I have not test out the siren and how loud it could get but I assume it is loud. There is a test feature within the control panel to test the system sensors and alarm but I have not used it at this time. My son is under 2 years old and I didn’t want to scare him.
I installed the sensors on the top edge of my door and I don’t notice them. Every sensor is bleach white so they hide in easily to your trim and surroundings.
SimpliSafe does offer protection packages with a trial period. I have chosen to use the self monitor feature as I will get an alert instantly on my phone and can call the authorities if needed. What I like is if I ever go away I can activate and pay for the premium plan that way I know I’m protected.
I recommend this security system to anyone. Easy installation, easy to use and reliable protection so you can sleep a little easier at night.

I have had a SimpliSafe home security system before and I’m a huge fan of the simplicity style of this system. As a female, I don’t care for anything too difficult to install, especially in a wires because I’m not an electrician so this advanced security system has a simple installation process. Installation for the keypad took less than an hour. The sensor took a few minutes. The homebase took a little long because of my Wi-Fi issues, but that was on my side, not the system side. And then the sensors are all tape magnet based and so making sure that they are positioned correctly was the hardest part, but I just made sure to take the old ones off and put the new one on The entire system took a few hours to install set up and make sure everything was working correctly. That include downloading the app running it and completing any logins that I needed to save.
If you don’t have a huge two-story home with a bunch of doors and windows, I feel like this system is perfect. However, you can add sensors and add cameras and anything to increase the size of the Security so you are not limited.

Setting up the base station, kepad, and sensors were such a breeze. I like how easy it is to managing devices, turning on/off alarms, and receiving alerts through the app. I gave it a 4-star due to a connection issue. The base station suddenly started beeping repeatedly showing a "No Link to Dispatcher" alert. I followed the instructions to reconnect back the base station and that seemed to fix the issue. Overall, this is a good setup to get started on protected your home.
