This game builds on the successful Sonic Mania port on the Switch and makes for a quality gaming experience. Graphics are crisp, controls are responsive, and its portability makes for a unique choice in this generation. A physical game cartridge, special edition cover, and art book are welcome additions, especially at this price point. A must-have for any fan of platformers.

Until the real Sonic Team can figure out how to make a Sonic game, we've got this excellent fan made game! These fans know how classic Sonic gameplay is supposed to work and every character feels so fun to control. While we mostly got levels that we're basically ripped from other Sonic games, I'm not complaining as the few new zones we have are fantastic. Every time I boot up this game, I go straight to Studiopolis Zone; so much fun!
Also this launch version of the physical package is fantastic as well. DLC is included on the cartridge, you get a shiny slip on cover, the reversible box art is amazing and the art book is filled with fun doodles and other art to see.

EASILY the best 2D Sonic game, and arguably the best Sonic game period. It truly feels like a 32-bit Sonic sequel to the class Genesis titles. However, while many of those games had pacing issues, inconsistent level design, and odd difficulty spikes, this is about as close to perfectly balanced as a 2D Sonic game can be. With the DLC include and some wonderfully retro reservable box art, it's a must for any Sonic fan.

Sonic the Hedgehog games has had a mix of good and bad titles over the years. Most the Sonic games have deviated from the formula that made Sonic the Hedgehog a fan favorite in the past. Sonic Mania brings back classic levels and new ones to the mix. It is an easy game to pick up and play with no real learning curve, just run as fast as you can, collect rings, avoid dangerous obstacles and bosses (the real challenge is finding and collecting all of the chaos emeralds). Sonic Mania Plus adds a little bit more of replay value with new playable characters, and a few other modes like time attack, and mirror mode. The switch version runs great, and the advantage it has over the other console versions is that you can play it on the go.

For $30 this is a steal for one of the best sonic games in the series. Everything is perfect with this game if you played the old games you will feel right at home. Also the music is magic to the ears.

Sonic games have been hit or miss (mostly miss) over the last 15 years or so. Sega hasn't been treating their blue mascot all that well.
But look what happens when they let a fan studio take a crack at it! This is a return to classic Sonic.
This game is as good, and often better than the best Sonic games from his old Sega Genesis days. With classic zones from the original games, to brand new imaginative levels. The music is great, the controls spot on, and the level design fantastic.
If you think Sonic "got bad" when he went 3D, this is the game for you. And this version has additional characters and modes, plus, if you're a collector, it has a physical edition. Grab it now.

For Fans of the Older Sonic Games

I'm not a diehard fan of Sonic, but I did play Sonic 1 and 2 on the Genesis when I was younger. Sonic Mania is a beautiful love letter to those games (including 3 & Knuckles, so I hear) and returns you to the classic 2D platforming that those games were known for. This game includes remixed versions of older stages and there are, I believe, two completely original stages in this game. That may be a bummer to some people, but it didn't bother me too much. I just can't review the two new characters that come with this physical edition because I haven't played them, but this game is still worth the money you spend on it.

Admittedly, I'm not the biggest Sonic The Hedgehog fan out there given the quality of his games tend to be too sporadic in the modern era. To me, Sonic's strength has always been in his 2D outings. The 3D games in his arsenal (even the critically acclaimed ones) never sat well with me, so when I heard that the blue hedgehog was returning to its roots, that caught my interest.
Thankfully, Sonic Mania Plus is an excellent comeback that actually improves upon the formula in some ways. The simple addition of the drop dash mechanic is a standout in particular. Gameplay, music, and level design are as tight as ever but the visuals have gone through a bit of an improvement. The best way I can describe the graphics in this game compared to the old Sega Genesis titles is by saying that this is what I imagine a 2D Sonic game would have looked like if one was released for the ill-fated Sega Saturn. Also, the extra screen real-estate from the game's 16:9 aspect ratio is put to good use, which makes levels not only feel more full but also helps you get a better feeling for for stage layout.
If you're a fan of old-school Sonic, then this will surely be a treat for you. All all, while Sonic 3 & Knuckles will forever remain my favorite entry in the series, I've gotta say that Sonic Mania plus is the best game since Sonic Advance 3 way back in 2004.

Awesome physical release for a simply awesome game
Fans of old school Sonic rejoice! This is exactly the game you were waiting for, from the music to the physics and the graphical style this is exactly like the Genesis games we all grew up on and is in many ways better. The plus version of the game just makes it that much better and with this physical version you get a cool art book and a reversible cover themed after the Genesis ones. Truly an excellent deal for an excellent game and a must for Sonic fans.

The packaging for the game is amazing without having to pay too much for it! The golden box the game is in looks wonderful and it really is a nice addition that most games do not give you today! The gameplay itself is great and re-done classic levels of Sonic are done in such a great unique way! It feels very vintage but modern at the same time! Only wish there was a bit more content and levels but but overall a wonderful addition to the Sonic games!

After years of mediocre Sonic games, the blue hedgehog has been downgraded to meme status these days, with most people expecting each release to get worse and worse. Some people even question if older sonic games were even good in the first place. Let me tell you, this game proves that the old formula still works better than ever. Sonic and friends return to their 2D roots and it' glorious. Blast through well designed classic stages at sonic speed, find hidden bonus levels to collect Chaos emeralds, and unravel the mystery of the Phantom Ruby. Sonic isn't alone in this endeavor. Knuckles and Tails return, their classic gameplay intact, along with old retro throwbacks of Mighy the Armadillo and Ray the flying squirrel. All five character control wonderfully and are quite fun. After you beat the main game? You have a Encore mode to playthrough with revised levels and even harder bonus stages. This mode has a added feature of being able to switch between characters during levels to change up how you progress. The only downside, the boss's are kinda easy and your able to spam them. But the levels more then make up for this. Now if only we could get 3D Sonic games to this caliber.

Overall great game, especially if you like the classic games. My only gripes are I don't like having to go back if you die, meaning if you lose all of your lives at the end of zone 2 or at a boss, you have to start back at the beginning of zone 1. Now, I know that it's better than going all the way back to the beginning of the game like the olden day's, still I would have preferred starting at the zone you were in. Also other minor gripe is, the music felt alot like Sonic CD music, which I would have preferred more of a 16 bit soundtrack, just my opinion and I am sure many people love the music. Overall great game and fun. Classic Sonic is back!

Sonic has been in a rough patch for a while. Even Sonic Forces was kind of a joke. This game though is amazing. It feels like you are playing the old Sega Genesis again, but instead you can take it on the go with your Switch. I love the reversible cover where you can make your Switch case look like an old Genesis case. A very fun game with some cool new characters added.

Sonic Mania Plus is a return to the glory days of Sonic the Hedgehog. If you enjoyed the original 3 games (& Knuckles), you're going to have a blast. This physical release also includes a lovely little artbook filled with behind-the-scenes stuff and a reversible cover that's not to be missed for Genesis fans. Ten billion thumbs up... that's how happy this game made me!

Sonic Mania Plus is easily the best way to enjoy Sonic Mania. The new characters added are awesome, along with 4 player multiplayer, but the new Encore Mode is only really a palette swap of previous levels, leaving much to be desired. But, for the game's price, you will be getting a fantastic experience along with a nice art book.

This port of the game is the best you can likely get right now. For 30 bucks you get a decent artbook and the cart. The game itself is very solid and this version comes with extra characters. It runs smoothly on the switch and has increased eye appeal in the handheld mode. Controls are tight and the characters handle like a dream.

Sonic Mania brings the original Genesis series back into the limelight with dutifully remastered levels and some great new additions. The original stages are just as challenging as I remember and there is enough new content to no doubt keep me replaying them for years to come.
