Lasts a little over a year and that's about it.
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been a Samsung buyer for many years and thought I'd "step up" my quality by going to the Sony XBR-900 series. Unfortunate mistake. It lasted a little over a year and got a well documented "flashing red light error (x4)." I've never had a TV go bad this quickly. I won't buy Sony again. Stick with Samsung. I've never had one fail.

Has features that I will not use.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Good picture. Sales staff did not explain features well. As a result paid too much and have buttons on remote that will get in the way for me since I am disabled.

Pleasantly surprised by color
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Here's my situation, as I owned a 6 year old Samsung (1080P) TV. It had great color for outdoor scenes like Football/baseball and good quality for well lit scenes on CNN/Fox News. However the dark scenes (ie. Blacks were terrible). One more background point: I utilize Directv and Netflix) I did my homework on the web and I'm a Consumer Reports subscriber. I wanted a solid long term performing TV and know OLED has the best blacks ..... but for how long? I read about consumer complaints but what really resonated was Rtings. They have been testing OLEGs for a few months and these set already have burn in. So before buying I looked at my viewing habits ... lots of news with the constant CNN/Fox logo. Also watched a football game for 3 hours ..... ditto, the same constant logo. So my needs were good "blacks", but also wanted dolby vision, solid HDR and an ACR port for my new Sony 5.1 sound bar system which has Dolby Atmos, The results are amazing. The daytime colors without 4K are significantly better than my old Samsung (probably because of upscaling) and the picture quality of dark scenes is wonderful without bleaching. Would Oled be better, probably, but to me it wasn't worth the risk. There are 8 picture settings, I use Vivid for Sports and Standard for News. Finally the 4K quality from Directv is phenomenal. Finally set up was easy. (Purchased at Best Buy on January 2, 2019)

Another great Sony!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Been a long-time Sony customer and wanted to babble about the latest set I'd purchased, to replace a nearly 20 year old model that's still in good condition but not useful beyond 720P anymore and the CCFL bulb has amazingly lasted this long to begin with... I was surprised to see the striking quality of the color on the demo unit at the store. When setting it up, I was happy to see no dead or stuck pixels. Nor blemishes on the LCD panel from handling during the manufacturing process. Those things I'd expect on $500 models, not models costing 2x, 3x, or more. Since my home's furniture cannot accommodate more than 50", I was happy to go with 49". Hearing that it is true array backlit LCD instead of edge-lit means there's far more control over backlighting and contrast. Sony has always been the go-to brand for native contrast ratio, but combining screen quality with a full array of lighting LEDs makes a HUGE difference in picture quality. I don't have any 4K titles yet, but the TV does an impeccable job at upscaling 1080P. I've not really noticed the difference. Upscaling 480i is easily above-average as well. Another Sony hallmark. Black levels are fairly uniform throughout. Great for the price point. There is some mild clouding at the corners, but nothing to get concerned over. Local dimming is also quite good - the 65" model does a better job as it has more controlled lighting zones, but the 49" model is no slouch. Experiment with dimming settings since the defaults can cause light blooming on occasion. It didn't bother me, but it might for some. The panel technology is PVA, meaning contrast will degrade at wider angles. At the same time, VA panels allow much higher native contrast ratio and that's important for dark rooms and vibrancy of colors. And banding - or the lack of it. Being an LCD panel that's LED backlit, there is no risk of burn-in. The image processing chip, in tandem with the full array backlighting, for which 60 zones on the 65" model but there will be far fewer on a 49" model because of its smaller size,. Using my computer on it, 4K and 1920x1080 work without a hitch, but for 4K on a computer I'd recommend a 60" or higher set because everything otherwise looks too small at standard DPI... but at 4k or even 1920x1080 upscaled, the TV excels at doubling as a computer monitor. This rocks! Color tone - on so many models I set the hue to "warm". This is the first set where the default "neutral" had the most pleasing, and accurate, picture. I did not expect phone compatibility. I didn't set it up yet, but I bought the TV primarily as a TV and not a peripheral for my phone. Still, there are benefits in having the functionality. For those who need it. Audio is passable, but HDMI routes everything to a receiver. No problems with 5.1 audio. The TV's electrical power cord is directly attached - I was hoping for a detachable one or one with a brick, since having to get through the stand furniture is a pain but I found a second way to hook up everything without problems. Was hoping the RF connector would have been on the left side. But color has never looked so good on a $1100 set.

So So
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great picture but this is the 2nd Sony I've had with an annoying glitch. This TV's display setting keeps resetting itself after every episode I have to go into settings and fix or the picture is distorted. Every Episode!!! I did a factory reset and still the same issue. Ridiculous. I am not buying any more Sony TVs and still need 2 more. I wish I could give this back.

Sweet!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.an amazing tv with the best UI I've seen. i first got a samsung Qled, I hate Samsung's very bright white menus and awful layout, disliked its skinny featurless remote, and most of all, unable to opt out of pushed content ads on menu(ALL SAMSUMG TVS)... this tv went beyond my expectations!! amazing picture, fabulous UI/menus/remote and features, a little extra coin but SO worth it. Oled still the king in picture (except for burn in!!), but to much money and for my space i cldnt do bigger than 49/50inch,(which no oleds come smaller than 55" at present)...if shopping for 55"+, sum reviews put Sony's 2017 930e model above this one so do sum research. great body with metal edging, a great tv for years to come as u need to look for when spending big bucks. awesome gaming tv, looks amazing wit low lag. seriously doubt you wld b unhappy wit this tv n any way!!, if u have the means, i wld recommend Sony's oled over this and anything..(though burn in a threat for gamers and pc'ers)... move over Samsung, your days are done!

Excellent mid line Sony
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've lived with this set for about 2 months. My rating would be more like 4.5 stars. There are a few minor flaws that prevent it from being a 5 star but most of these issues do not really subtract from the overall visual and day to day usage experience. The rating up to this point is based only on modest cable TV images and upconverted DVD and Blu-ray. Sony units are usually among the best upconverting sets and this one is no exception. It's one of the main reasons I choose it. Compared to my former state of the art at the time 10 year old XBR8 the cable images are smoother, more detailed and with better color processing. DVD and Blu-ray upconverted images look clearly superior. Even on these older sources the HDR technology really pops the contrast and creates a much more 3D presentation. Colors are much richer and the blacks are deeper with less crush and more gradients of grey present. Clearly, technology has moved on in the last decade. I would whole heartedly recommend this mid line set as a reasonably priced replacement to your much older higher end TVs. Even if your sources right now are not Ultra HD you'll see clear improvements on your video performance. There are some minor blooming issues. Static white lettering or other bright objects against a total black background do show some slight blooming but is not noticeable on normal moving images. And, if the sources are less the pristine, you may notice some noise and crawly distortion on the HDR upconverting of bright light sources against darker areas such as daytime skies against a building, etc. I'd imagine that on full native UHD sources this would not be present so might not be the TV. Just less than optimum sources trying to be upconverted. You'll need a good sound bar or surround system. The speakers, as with most modern flat screens are minimal at best. Ok for news and casual listening. But, tinny and thin for movies, etc. I'm very pleased with this 900F. It's a clear upgrade from my well worn XBR8 and I cant' wait to dive into UHD streaming to see what the full technology can do. Easy to set up and use. A solid home run for a mid line Sony. If it lasts 10 years like the last XBR did I'll consider it a bargain!

don't buy Sony
||Posted . The Never-Improved Upon Line from Sony
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Poor functionality and unimpressive color settings. Very difficult to fine tune brightness and contrast to get realistic image quality. Also been having a recent issue where the display is completely black when turning on the tv which is less than 5 months old. Regret this purchase.
