Mediocre entry-level OLED

Compared to the 2019 model A9G Master Series, which was much more costly when it came out, you can definitely tell where Sony cut corners to bring the price down. Unfortunately, the A80K is the only 77 inch television that Sony now makes. The A80 models do not use the “Master Series” moniker, as they’re not considered part of Sony’s “premium” line of televisions. The picture quality is quite dim and colors are overly-saturated to make up for the lack of brightness. The built-in speakers are tinny, flat, and unbalanced; dialogue mode helps, but it reduces the bass to almost non-existent levels and the highs are boosted to the point of being harsh and unpleasant, even after manual equalization and acoustic calibration. The older A9G had 3.1 channel sound and the center channel really made all the difference there; the A80K removes the center channel and instead goes with a 2.1 channel sound setup. It features 4 HDMI connections, yet only two of them are HDMI 2.1 and one of these 2.1 HDMI ports is what is used for a sound bar, so if you use a sound bar, that leaves only one HDMI 2.1 port available for use; definitely an oversight on Sony’s part. If you have a PS5 and Xbox Series X, and a sound system, that means only one of them can be used for features like variable refresh rate, 120hz. Also, keep in mind that this TV CANNOT do VRR and Dolby Vision at the same time, you have to pick one or the other (standard HDR 10 is used with VRR; the LG C2 can do Dolby Vision and VRR at the same time). Onto the good: The saturated colors do make this television stand out when compared to other brands and it makes ordinary content look vibrant. The sharpness is nice and crisp and holds up when in motion. The perfect blacks really stand out when watching content in a dark room, and there is not any perceptible crushing of blacks even when slightly boosting the contrast to help boost the brightness. When connected to a PS5, this tv auto-calibrates to the optimal settings for the best possible picture quality with low latency and no additional tweaks are necessary; pretty neat feature. The built-in Google TV is snappy and responsive. It’s much better than the clunky mess that is LG’s WebOS. The remote works like a remote with no gimmicky waggle features or too many buttons. In summary: Yes, the A80K is Sony’s entry level OLED television and it shows. The LG C2 is the main competitor, and the C2 is LG’s mid-tier line of OLED televisions. LG really brought their A-game this year and the LG C2 has really bested Sony at the same price-point - offering more features, a brighter panel, 4 HDMI 2.1 ports, and very natural non-saturated colors. It seems that LG’s C2 is the better value for the money. Although Sony has built a very strong brand reputation in the electronics market and LG’s reputation has been…spotty at-best…you may want to take some time, do some side-by-sides, and some research before making your decision this year, especially if you’re in the market for the best 77 inch OLED TV.

Image Retention / Burn-in Failure!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this TV in November of 2022 and it already has significant image-retention / burn-in issues, despite the SONY rep at Best Buy that day saying that burn-in wasn't an issue with this TV due to "Pixel Shift" and "Panel Refresh" functionality. My "Pixel Shift" has been "On" since day 1, and I've accomplished "Panel Refresh" to no avail...and you can only perform "Panel Refresh" once a year at the most. Screen still shows significant burn-in after such a short period of time. Best Buy told me to call SONY to explain and "SONY National Customer Relations" told me there's nothing they can do for me, other than to tell me to stop watching the same channel...just WOW! (SONY ref 08858276) My old Panasonic plasma screen lasted more than 5 years before I had the same issue. So, in short, I'm rating this TV as a 1 star not only because of the "burn-in" issue, but because the SONY rep misrepresented or didn't know anything about the performance capabilities of this TV coupled with the fact that SONY National Customer Relations wasn't willing to stand behind their product...they told me it's not their problem and they'll do nothing else to make it right. SONY has lost me as a customer!

Note, I have not bought a new television in over 8 years. Mike, works the sales floor at Best Buy, Fayetteville, N.C. Ask for Mike. Why? Mike is professional, zero pressure, showed me several options for a 65” smart television set. Straight up, seeing is believing. One should visibly see what they want before they purchase. Again, it’s been several years since I purchased a new TV. When I seen this 65” Black Sony TV on sale plus the sound quality without the sound bar is amazing… I kept walking back to this one because of the features built in and the quality of the picture. Sony is built to last. My 42” Sony TV, 8 years + is still going strong. Best Buy is offering 0% financing for 24 months too. A+

I thought there was something wrong with it, slow and glitchy. Updated it and it works a lot better. The Google TV is a nice addition. Still getting used to it. Not as seamless as TV plus from Samsung but comparable.

We have never experienced any problems or issues with these sets. They have also integrated well into our sound systems. We have had other brands, but none as durable as Sony.

good not great

Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.decided to get this instead of the C2. not sure how much better the C2 is but the sony is a good oled tv. only knock is the brightness. the dark bright scenes are perfect but darker scenes like in the batman could be much brighter. ive read different reviews thaf say the C2 is brighter and some that say it is not. Hopefully the 2023 sony oled will inprove on this. overall im happy with my purchase. love sony products.
