First impressions: The Sony PG 10 Speaker, looks rugged, loud and heavy. To my surprise, the speaker is lighter than it looks. When the table top is folded, there is grooves that act as handles for carrying. It doesn't provide the best grip, but it is sufficient for carrying it to where you are going to set it up. The speaker isn't so heavy, so moving it around is not a big task. When extended, you'll find four cup holders and a honeycomb textured tabletop to set whatever you feel like on it. The specs state it can support up to 10kg of weight on top, So I would not recommend sitting on it even though it looks like it could support a person lol. The speaker cabinet itself seems to be made of mostly wood, except the front and top. A wood speaker cabinet is best when it comes to sound. Wood is dense, resonant and rigid. Meaning, you will get a well balanced sound without distortion. It has two tweeters and a sub, when closed the tweeters front fire, and when open the tweeters fire up and out. It sounds great, indoors and out. Bass is deep, low, and thumps and stays clean at loud volumes. Mids are warm and full, highs and treble are clear without being too harsh even at louder volumes. The speaker is compatible with bluetooth, RCA, and USB connections. The usb port will charge your device while plugged in, a nice addition. It also has a microphone input for all you Karaoke lovers! It has separate volume buttons for a microphone and you can add effects and echo to it. To my surprise, the FM tuner has a very good and strong antenna. I took it to a local drive in theater and the movie sounded great with this speaker. Lol the people beside me appreciated the speaker and thought it was pretty cool. As you can see in the photo, the cup holders aren't very big. I had a 32 ounce cup and it did not fit in the holder. Still nice to have, will definitely hold smaller cups and water or beer cans and bottles. I can't comment on how this speaker would hold up in the rain or at the beach. But it should be great just about anywhere you take it. Sony provides two apps that you can download on your android or iOS device. The sony music center app provides music playback for hi res tracks on your smart phone or computer through network. It also lets you play with equalizer settings, so that you can set it to your liking. I honestly loved the sound straight out of the box. I'd recommend this speaker if you are an avid music listener, and love blasting music wherever you go. Great for tailgating, parties, poolside, patio, and drive in theaters! If you so happen to have one near you. The speaker battery made it through the double feature at the drive in. Pros - Wood Cabinet - Great Sound Plenty of connection options and an FM Tuner Table top mode for snacks and drinks Excellent Battery Life. Usb port will charge your devices Cons - carrying grips are small for my hands

I don’t normally open a review on a negative note, but I really feel Sony missed one major thing with this outdoor wireless speaker that they even advertise as “Easy to carry.” No one wants to carry this 14lb speaker with two hands. If you are bringing it to a party, you are going to want to carry your favorite beverage in one hand and this party machine in the other. Even a simple fabric strap would have made all the difference. The carry handles are shallow and flat, so it is even difficult to try and hold it on your hip with one hand. Ok, rant out of the way. This Sony GTK-PG10 speaker is a nice party in a box though. You can connect to it through Bluetooth, USB, or stereo audio cable (not included). It has a FM tuner built in so you can listen to local stations or the broadcast at your favorite sporting event. It also has a microphone input and some simple microphone settings so you can use it as an announcement system of karaoke machine. It can even be set on a tripod pole like other event sound systems. Sound from this system can be heard clearly from a fair distance. I know my neighbors were wondering what was going on while I was first testing it out on my nearly acre lot. Flipping the top open makes a noticeable difference as well. With it closed the tweeters are strictly high sounds. However, when flipped open it is like some mid range sounds are pushed through them to help project the audio. As with most of Sony’s speakers, it has the usual Mega Bass option that even with it off this system delivers decent bass. However, since it is the only speaker for everything other than the highs, it can flutter a bit at high volumes in mixed range songs. The front panel on this speaker can be a bit overwhelming, with 13 buttons. Then, if you actually read the manual, you will find there are even more settings that require combinations of pushing buttons. Like being able to truly disable the demo mode, enabling child lock so kids don’t have fun with the buttons and checking the battery level. Some of this can be handled through their Sony Music Center app as well as some additional settings. They claim up to 13 hours on battery life, but there are so many variables to this that you are unlikely to get that time unless you are just using it to listen casually in a small room at low volumes. However, at “party” levels you are still going to get several hours of use and you always have the option to plug it into a 110v outlet. The USB port on this can also provide your mobile devices with a charge, so long as you aren’t using USB as a function to play music. So, if you want to keep your phone running while nowhere near an outlet, you have a life line. Another thing I find odd that they didn’t include is the party chain option. With two or more of these speakers linked you could truly have the big event feel wirelessly, but hope you have a device that can stream to two Bluetooth devices to do it. The audio cable input for this is also standard red/white RCA instead of 3.5mm aux, so depending on what you are intending to connect, you will need to consider the cable. As the weather starts warming up, this speaker will definitely get more use. With it’s splash-proof top it can sit on a table without taking up useful space. With it’s simple design it doesn’t look like I’m trying to throw a rave, but just having some music for a party.

Great Party Boom Box with Nice Bass!

I'm usually skeptical of portable devices that promise great bass but I was not disappointed with the Sony PG10. As far as Bluetooth speakers go, this is one of the best with some nice extra features that indoor and outdoor party-folk might really enjoy. The unit is fairly portable, although you will need two hands to carry it. It is lighter than you would imagine, considering the 13-hour battery and size of the woofer. It has two modes for indoor and outdoor and each is triggered by the position that the tweeters are in - folded out for outdoor and left folded in for indoor. To really enjoy this system, you should download the Sony Music Center app. It will guide you through connecting the Bluetooth as well as centrally manage your library and external players such as Pandora and Spotify which makes changing tunes a little more seamless for the host. There is a second app that works with it too called Fiestable but I did not try that. It supposedly allows more remote control of the front features as well as voice control which could be useful for the busy party host/DJ. I found the unit very easy and intuitive to use and it did not require too many instructions to explore the features. There are several preset equalizer settings that are accessible through the Sony Music Center app as well as the ability to customize them yourself although I found this harder as the sound cuts out for a split-second each time you make a change. That said, for party/dance/most other types of music, I found the default setting to be more than satisfactory. This would be a good tailgating accessory. It is more than loud enough and has a built in FM radio as well as the streaming capability. I played around with tuning the radio and most local stations sounded great. You can save them as presets as well which is useful. I'm not sure if the included cup holders are as useful as promised but the unit does claim to have a spill-proof top in case someone's red solo cup gets knocked over on top there. Still, I would prefer no liquids near any of my sound equipment. The indoor mode sound was very good although I was hoping for slightly better mid range. The bass cannot be faulted though and for entertaining, it is more than adequate and fills any room. To test the outdoor mode, I took the speaker out to a 6-acre spot of land as it would definitely not go down well in my part of suburbia at full blast! The wider sound dispersion from the outdoor mode worked very well and I could hear all the tracks very clearly and loudly from quite some distance away. I probably walked about 150 yards or more away and could still hear everything very clearly, from all angles and not just in front of it. No quality seemed to be lost despite the unit's relatively modest size and the folded out tweeters seemed to fire up and out in that position which helps spread the sound in a wide arc of dispersal. I cranked the volume up to its maximum on the unit and then you can still control volume further on your streaming app. Stood right next to it was a little uncomfortable but a few steps away it was comfortably loud and the sound did not distort at all. Sony also added a hole for a standard speaker pole so you could put it up higher for even better sound dispersion. The unit also has the ability to plug in a microphone so the host could make announcements on it as well as have party goers join in with karaoke to any songs - the unit has buttons to alter the pitch up or down in case anyone is really struggling which could be a lifesaver on occasion! Battery life seems to be very good. I have run it for about 5-6 hours so far and still around 50% of battery life reported. Charging it up is as easy as plugging it in with a standard power cable but you don't need that when you head outside although it will keep charged up if you have a power source to hand. Things that would run the battery down faster include charging a phone (with the included USB port), running the Extra Bass mode (but really, why wouldn't you do that?) and having the volume cranked up but these are just things to bear in mind and should not affect anything but the longest of all day/night parties. I am very impressed with this unit. It is great to have on hand for outdoor parties. It would make a very powerful indoor, Bluetooth speaker that puts most other portable units to shame with its superb bass. When I am not using it for outdoor events, it will be my garage/workshop unit and I look forward to that thumping bass when I next head out for some garage chores.

As we all know, the market is oversaturated with wireless Bluetooth speakers in all shapes and sizes. Kudos to Sony for stepping up to create something innovative with features that incorporate what many people, including myself, might find useful. While using most Bluetooth speakers, I noticed I would typically take them with me when I was heading to the park, a friend/family member's house for a barbecue, or on a road trip. The one thing I found that most portable speakers lacked is deep bass or loud enough sound. I definitely no longer need to worry about that with the Sony PG10 Portable Bluetooth Outdoor Speaker as they designed and optimized it for outdoor use. After unpacking it and upon first look, the speaker, which is a title that doesn't do it justice, might be a little intimidating due to its aggressive box shaped look. However, don't be fooled by its size or Transformer-like top shelf. It was surprisingly light considering its size and easy enough to carry around with the side handles. It has most of the basic features you would find on any Bluetooth speaker including wireless connection, on/off, volume up/down, etc. It also includes a built in FM tuner with a retractable antenna, audio input, microphone input, microphone volume up/down, and a USB port for music or powering/charging a device. The functions are shown on a scrolling display. It has a button for mega bass which I'll definitely be leaving on most of the time. If you fold out the top shelves, the tweeters fire upwards producing much wider sound which comes in handy outdoors. It claims to have a 13 hour charge time and I'm sure that fluctuates depending on how loud you have the speaker set and whether you are using the USB port to power or charge a device. That being said, I'm sure it's good at a party for several hours unplugged. It also has an option to attach it to a tripod to use as a monitor speaker for events or karaoke. The speaker is splash proof if you plan on using the built in cup holders or top shelf. It was very easy to pair the speaker with my smartphone via the Bluetooth and by downloading the Sony apps you can control the speaker and stream music using other streaming services. Even given all the innovative features they put into this box, the incredible sound is what stood out the most. The Digital Sound Processor (DSP) automatically adapts audio settings to optimize performance for both indoor and outdoor environments. The music is crystal clear and loud in both the compact and expanded shelf options. I attempted to turn it all the way up indoors, which was way too loud, and the music remained clear without distortion. Given all these features, I would recommend the Sony PG10 Outdoor Speaker to anyone in the market for a well made, great sounding speaker.

Next Level Portable Speaker with Big Time Sound

Portable speakers are becoming more mainstream so companies have to stick out from one another when creating new ones - and this new Sony Speaker will definitely turn heads for many reasons. PROS: - Right out of the box you are really interested in this design. It's big enough to make a statement but not too big to ruin its portability factor. It has a rugged look that will protect it but not over the top rugged. - Set Up is really easy. I recommend reading the manual and downloading the Sony Music Center App as there are a few tricks and options I wouldn't know unless I used those resources. - The sound will really blow you away. The volume goes from 1-50 on the device and you get to 25 and think it's really loud. This Sony Speaker just really fits the bill for an outdoor speaker with its range. - I really like the versatility of Radio, Bluetooth, USB, Audio-In, and Microphone. It makes the speaker that much more useful because of all the options. - The top panel's tweeters sound incredible and to me it's necessary to have this thing open to play music. When you open and close the top panel with the tweeters, they have these nice clips to ensure the panel stays closed unless needed. - Lastly, the battery is such a huge part of why this speaker is great. You would not expect a speaker of this size and with this many features to be able to last on a battery let alone 13 hours on a battery! It really makes this a steal. CONS: - Probably the most noticeable con with this is how the upward firing tweeters operate. Overall, the Speaker sounds so much better when the top panel is open and the upward firing tweeters are being used. Technically, they still work when the panel is closed but it just does not sound like they are relevant at all. I just think they should make the speaker sound that great all the time and not just when it's open. - Also when you are opening and closing the top panel, there is a noticeable pause in the music so the speaker can adjust to the tweeters being in the closed or open position. It does not make it feel like a smooth transition. - The Speaker isn't easy to carry one handed and you will need two. Not that it's too heavy but the hand grips are better used when you have two hands on it. - The Audio-in port is a L/R component cable and there is no straight aux chord plugin which is a miss to me. - The charging chord is just a regular power chord. I would have preferred a USB-C charger since more devices are moving in that direction. BOTTOM LINE: - Although this speaker is large and requires an extra hand while carrying - If you are a music lover who wants a speaker that can do it all on the go with power and portability, you will be very happy with this purchase.

    Speaker and Table Top

The Sony GTK-PG10 wireless speaker is Sony’s endeavor to create a wireless, battery powered, primarily outdoor use speaker. It has an FM tuner, Bluetooth integration, USB input, and composite cable (red & white) input. Its most discussed feature though is the foldable top that opens up and has four cup holders. After a week of using it, I think it’s a fairly solid speaker. Designed with an advertised 13 hour battery life and splash resistant table top, this speaker was meant to travel. Ideal uses would be at the pool, beach, tailgating, camping, a construction site, or maybe just in the backyard. It has multiple types of connectivity so that you can play music from a variety of methods. There is also a karaoke feature that allows you to plug in a microphone and sing along. It even has a Key Control feature that will change the key of the music in case the song isn’t in your key. After trying the speaker out for a while here were the things that I liked and disliked. Likes *Long Battery Life *Comes with some charge out of the box, so buy and go. *Multiple inputs for connecting medium *Strong FM reception *The Key Control works on all functions (was fun to hear songs in different keys) *Bluetooth pairing was really easy *Can pair up to 3 Bluetooth sources at a time *Opening the top spreads the sound out and seemingly amplifies the sound *Carrying handles on the sides *Cup holders are different sizes. 2 hold a regular 12 ounce can. 2 hold a 12 ounce can in a thin koozie Dislikes *No mini (headphone size) input. Must convert it to composite (red & white) cable. *USB device input is limited to 5000 songs. Can’t play my whole MP3 library on it. *Apple products have to be connected through the Bluetooth feature. Not sure why. *If using an input all inputs are uncovered so there’s a way to get water into the speaker. *Input area would hold water and not drain out. Could be designed better. *Bluetooth connection plays at a much lower volume than the radio (even with my device turned up) *Bass was not strong enough. Even with the Mega Bass feature turned on there wasn’t enough kick for me. This was my biggest issue with the speaker. I assume that this correlates to the longer lasting battery, so there is probably some give and take here. *Cup holders do not hold bigger cups or cans with thicker koozies. Overall, I think the speaker is pretty solid. The long battery is pretty amazing, and it can be used in more ways than just a Bluetooth speaker. The table top feature adds a new dimension to the speaker, and is fairly usable. This product could definitely add some enjoyment to your time outdoors.

Sony is grinding out some fun speakers lately! The PG10’s top features are: built in rechargeable battery for tailgates, microphone plug, cup holders, and the crisp sound/bass! So this speaker reminded me of Friday nights in my hometown where we’d tune into the radio station that shared the scores of rival teams! Then there are college alumni tailgates which are going to be a blast with the sound this delivers. You can add your phone via Bluetooth, add a microphone and place your tablet on top for karaoke night and attach it to a stand if you want. My family and I usually take river trips and dock at the base of the river and just listen to music. I’m excited that I can also use the speaker to charge my phone in case it runs low on battery. Overall worth adding this to your household because it will come in handy this summer more than you know! Just posted up outside with some drinks to enjoy the spring night!

    Not your ordinary bluetooth speaker

My initial impression of this speaker was a bit underwhelming for the size of the speaker. Dramatically larger than your run-of-the-mill portable pill-shaped speaker, I was expecting something with some serious kick to it. Unfortunately, this speaker isn't going to be rattling any windows, even with "Mega Bass" turned on. That said, it's still not a bad bluetooth speaker. Indoors it can fill a room with sound, and probably better than most other portable speakers, wings open or closed. Since this speaker is obviously designed for outdoor use, I took it out to see how it performed. I was pleasantly surprised how well it did in a big open area with wind blowing. I cranked the volume to max, turned on mega bass, and also cranked the volume to max on my phone (Galaxy S9+). The sound never sounded distorted or strained, and it sounded clear from all angles. Battery dropped about 10-15% under this maximum load over about 20 minutes... meaning if you plan on cranking it to max you may only get just over 3 hours of listening. At more reasonable volumes, you can probably get much longer battery life. Although you the Sony Music Center app isn't required for this speaker, it grants you extra settings and control over the speaker. After I paired to the speaker with bluetooth, it wanted to pair again through the app, and it didn't work until I "forgot" the speaker in my phone bluetooth settings. Besides this odd hiccup, setup was fine. The app works well enough, you can power off the speaker, change the volume, check the battery level, and turn the voice guidance on and off (though turning off the voice for the battery level didn't seem to work). You can also adjust the equalizer settings, which despite being 5 taps to get to in the app, work well as well. It seems the speaker by default is set for "Excited" which I did not like at all, so I strongly encourage playing with the EQ settings and find the one you like. You can also set a custom EQ. I found I liked "Energetic" and "Relaxed" the best. Overall, if you're looking for a capable speaker than can be used at BBQs, Camping, or Tailgates, and also hold your drinks, this may be what you're looking for.

SONY PG10. Sony must be mess’n with us by not using a more distinctive product name. Like, maybe, “Party Central.” Surely that’s exactly what they have in mind here, since they’ve provided the featured performer at any party, this PG10. After opening the box, I took Sony’s PG10 straight to my outdoor deck, setting it next to my gas grill. There can’t be any doubt about how this sound machine is going to be used. If not here on the deck, then the tailgate of a SUV/truck, or at least near a pool. FEATURES and SETUP. The only items in the 15 lb box are this uniquely designed music system (13” x 14 7/8” x 12”) and its power cable. Beer (or Tequila and limes) are a separate purchase. Don’t worry about that power cable. It’s not always necessary, ‘cause there are long-lasting rechargeables onboard. (5-13 hours depending on volume). You’ll probably want your music loaded onto a USB drive or your phone/tablet. The former can plug directly into the USB port (plays MP3, WMA, AAC and WAV) and the latter connects via Bluetooth (iAP). There’s even an FM radio built in (pulled in stations easily without extending the antenna). Or try the analog Audio (RCA L/R) for connecting other music sources (CD player, portal tape player). Do yourself a favor and download the MUSIC CENTER APP for your phone. Don’t judge the speaker sound until you’ve dug down into the Settings >> Sound >> Sound Field >> Music >> Preset EQ >> where you’ll discover 7 different EQs plus a Custom you can create. These EQ changes only kick in when you select “Done”. They’re all different, interesting, and offering immense control over your listening experience. [Sony: seriously? 4 levels down to find a feature I just love to play with. Life is already too complicated. ] This version of MUSIC CENTER works wonderfully, fully integrating its various settings seamlessly between my iPhone XR (playlists, volume, music selection) and the PG10 (input management, etc). No hiccups. No unintended interruptions in the music. Then there is the FIESTABLE APP. One of its features adds “motion control” whereby your hand gestures, while holding your phone, adjust volume, or skip to next song, or pause and stop. It worked nicely on my iPhone XR, but don’t try dancing while this feature is enabled. Within FIESTABLE you will also find ways to manage your Karaoke session. Oh, did I forget to mention Karaoke? Yep. Plug in a Microphone, adjust the level of MIX into the music selection you’re playing AND even modify the KEY (although I thought it was the pitch that was changing). PERFORMANCE: I think it’s fair to say that the SONY PG10 is especially designed as an “outdoor” speaker, which is to say it should sound best in a setting that is large, and ideally, out in the open. (see note) [Note: Speakers for outdoors? Why and how do they do that? Typical rooms have lots of reflected sounds with treble and bass all easily reflected or reinforced by walls and corners. You tend to sit closer to your music indoors and your room has a big influence on the sound you hear. But, what about outdoors? You’re much further away from the sound source. Few, if any, reflections occur. Upper treble sounds might need to be louder and bass will need to be even more powerful.] Of course, then Sony added fully customizable EQ in their Music Center App, giving you the ability to over-rule the speaker design. I also set the PG10 in my family room and listened to it for a few hours, thoroughly enjoying the EQ I had selected for indoors (Chill). Sony has done a nice job meeting the entertainment needs of party goers, while also delivering an easy-to-use entertainment center for anyone else. It’s an all-around 5-star player. Just don’t get caught disturbing the peace.

This the perfect addition to my other Sony portable speakers. The likes: it has an retractable antenna for the runner included. USB and Analog inputs in addition to the Bluetooth input, foldable cup holder. Sony has a nice useful app to control most of the speaker features. It’s easy to set up and use. You can add other Sony speakers as well. The neutral: Despite the size it is lightweight, however the sound is not that loud compared to similar sized speakers. The sound does not get distorted at high levels but it is not a high powered woofer. The tweeter make perfect combo for full range sound. The dislikes: it’s not as powerful as the size deserves, but it’s not heavy so I didn’t take a star for that. The retractable antenna can be easily bent or damaged. Two cup holders are not round so it’s tricky to put cups in. All in all is perfect for outdoor such parks and the beach!

This Sony Bluetooth speaker has the best bang for your buck I have seen in a portable Bluetooth speaker.... and it has cupholders! In the box: - GTK-PG10 Speaker - Power/Charging Cable - Manuals Setup is very simple like all other Bluetooth speakers. If you want you can connect it to Sony's Music Center app which give you a little extra control of sound settings and settings in general. Design: The design of this speaker is very unique mainly due to the integrated grab handles which turn into cup holders and a shelf on top. The front features two large ports for the just over 7" speaker and the two tweeters reside in the folding section on top. The buttons are large, easy to use and have a rubber texture. The USB, RCA, and Mic inputs are located behind a plastic cover towards the top. Sony's says the top of this unit is splash proof in case drinks happen to spill on top and I have to say I agree although I would try not to do it all the time. Features: - USB, RCA, Microphone, and Bluetooth inputs - FM Tuner - Tripod Compatible - Cupholders - 5+ Hours at max volume (LOUD!), Up to 13 hours at 50% volume. - Relatively easy to carry/portable Sound quality: The sound quality combined with the features of the PG10 is where the huge value proposition comes into play. The volume range of the PG10 is very large so it has the ease of playing indoors and outdoors. The actual sound quality is good not amazing but for its intended use its more than clear. The Mega Bass function actually provides a decent difference and is a must for playing outdoors to get the most range out of the music. My only complaint about the speaker is when the top is unfolded the unit recognizes this and changes the "fade" between the large speaker and tweeters so it becomes almost a little unbalanced and too "tinny" sounding. I know this is to get the most sound out of the unit and is perfect for outdoor use but if you wanted to use the cup holders without this change in sound it cannot be done. I just wish it was a mode rather than controlled based on when the top is open/closed. Summary: For $250 the PG10 has TONS to offer! I have had experience with speaker that where smaller and cost the same as this one and did not provide nearly the same sound quality and functionality. I would definitely recommend this speaker to anyone who needs a speaker to take around to small/medium size events that runs on battery and provides a great sound.

    Weird but Cool Party Speaker!

Yup - weird but cool. A Speaker with "ears" that flip out and change the sound dispersion. Interesting idea - and it works! Sony will likely have a hit for backyard party goers and tailgaters with this portable speaker system. A splash-proof top help to protect from accidental liquid spills - so not to worry. My biggest fear is somebody deciding to use it as a stool or chair - which is bound to happen. It's only rated for 22 lbs. Sony - should have beefed that up a bit. That is one of me reasons for only 4 stars - along with the fact that my Yeti does NOT fit into the cup holder. Dang. Aside from those gottcha's, the speaker produces big sound from a wide variety of sources including: Bluetooth, RCA, USB, and ¼-inch jack. In addition, the GTK-PG10 has a built-in AM/FM radio,a feature I think is often overlooked! Good job Sony! It paired easily to my devices, carries nicely with side handles and like toe option to mount on a pole speaker stand. Overall - I'm impressed and will use this all summer at my bonfires!

This Sony PG10 portable speaker is meant to be a great companion for outdoor parties. rechargeable battery is enough for 13 hours and system itself not to heavy.Offers a lot of music connection choices; BT, FM/AM Radio, USB" input and charge out" and microphone input 1/4 inch jack. top panel can be open like wings to form a table that can hold 4 cups and its splash proof and easy to wide down taking into consideration the front panel is not water or splash proof. buttons are durable. the most feature that I like is the Fiestable app that allows me to control the speaker through my smartphone by voice and also control volume/play/pause by tilting the smartphone to direct directions. The system is portable and versatile and looks pretty.

Admittedly havent actually used it OUTSIDE yet-- but indoor use has been pretty much perfect..... Bass is strong, albeit a LITTLE muddy maybe...but for the price it's great... Fold out top works easily....it's VERY easy to pick up and move around...and sound is very good, and great volume when all the way up. ONLY reason not 5 stars- is the lack of a remote control, which would make the usability MUCH more convenient, because u do have to GO OVER TO the unit to turn on, turn volume up (u could just turn vol on unit ALL way up - and control it from whatever source ur using as well). Very satisfied with it for what i need....a loud wireless speaker to blast for myself and roommates.

There was a Sony speaker sale going on, this speaker and the HUGE plug in speaker we’re both $150... I didn’t know which one to choose, decided to sleep on it, woke up the next day and the sale was over and it went back to regular price.. spent the next 2 months hating myself for not buying this one, moment sale popped back up I bought it instantly and haven’t looked back! Absolutely a beast, way louder than you need, perfect for tailgating, bbq, bonfires or whatever! Battery says it lasts 13 hours... I think that’s on the low end, I went 2 weeks without charging it using it everyday max volume and it barely went down to 30%. I have dozens of speakers, and this one is the best. I do reccomend you buying a $15 speaker stand, makes it way better!!

Setup: Unboxing and setup was very easy. The Sony PG10 is a single unit; no assembly. The box contains the PG10, an important information sheet written in pictograms, power cable, and the instruction manual. The built in rechargeable battery arrived with a 50% charge. It was ready play straight out of the box! Being a man of little patience when it comes to new toys, opted to go straight for the FM radio instead of going through the hassle of connecting iTunes over Bluetooth. I found out, ten minutes later, that blue tooth was just as easy to setup as the FM radio. Features: The PG10 has a number of features. It has FM radio (no digital tuner), Bluetooth, USB, composite audio connections, and a microphone jack. The buttons on the front of the unit are easy to navigate. The buttons are hexagonal, oversized, and made out of some soft rubbery material. The USB/Composite input housing and the power cable housing have covers made out of the hard plastic. Sony states that the top of the PG10 is spill resistant. The buttons and port covers leave me with the impression that some of that liquid resistance extends to the sides of the unit. I have no intention of putting it to the test for the sake of this review. I hope you will understand. There is a function button to cycle through the different inputs/functions of the unit. The LCD screen will display the active function. It will display the radio station information. It will not, however, display any information about my music such as track title or artist. I would have expected to see this when connected to iTunes over Bluetooth. Instead, the Bluetooth function only displays the name of the connected Bluetooth device. I think Sony could have done more here. The PG10 has two tweeters, located in the wings of the expandable “drink and chips tray” top. The unit will automatically switch between an open sound mode and a closed sound mode depending on the status of these wings. The system does sound different depending on the status of these wings. There is also a one second pause in audio when making the transition from closed to open and back. Open Mode, the tweeters sound more spacious and inviting. Closed Mode, the PG10 sounds like it is being stingy with its audio performance. The PG10 sounds like it is underwater. My preference is to keep the ears open in all listening environments. The woofer has some thump to it. I had to turn on Mega Base to get any real thump out the PG10. Tuning, power, volume control for both speakers and microphone, Mega Base, and a play/pause button are also located on the front face of the unit. There is one unexpected feature that is also available. There are two buttons named Key Control. Instead of reading the instructions, like a normal person would, I chose to press the left button. I was playing Queen’s “we will rock you” at the time. Freddy Mercury’s voice immediately turned to mud. Ouch! So, I kept pressing the button until the PG10’s display read -6. Freddy’s voice got super super super deep. It was strange. It was so strange that I just had to press the right-side button until it was +6. Yes! Chipmunk Queen! What fun that was! My whole family laughed for a good ten minutes. I am guessing that this is a karaoke feature and not meant for regular musical enjoyments. However, definitely go full chipmunk on your favorite music. It’s a blast! Connectivity: Connectivity is super easy. FM radio just works. My iPhone instantly found the PG10. I was streaming from my iTunes account in seconds. I do have an old MS Zune that I do use with my Sony SRS-XB31 for multiple fun reasons. I had to connect my Zune via the composite inputs. The PG10 would not recognize the Zune as a USB device. Connection was easy with the right cable. The one major benefit to using the Zune is that it does have a Digital Tuner. I have a lot of Digital stations in my area, so the feature is important to me. Sound: Please read all of this before making your conclusions. My very first sonic experience with this unit left my ears feeling sick. I was thinking to myself, “for the money this was the best Sony could do?” I tried everything from Rock to classical to Japanese K-Pop. Everything sounded metallic with heavy treble sauce. I did not find a way to adjust the speaker’s EQ or DSP settings from the speaker’s control panel. Those settings are controlled Sony’s Music Center app. The default preset was set to something called “excited”. “Excited” sound mode sucks for everything! I cannot believe the speaker shipped from Sony with the worst preset in the library. I cycled through the different EQ presets settling on “Chill Out.” It saved the day! Why Sony does not lead with this preset is a mystery to me. There are several presets available including a customer EQ preset. Play around and eventually you will find something that works for you. Wings open mode sounds better to me than wings closed. I tried this unit in my living room, den, basement, bathroom, on my deck, and on the tailgate of my truck. Open wings modes is the way to go. The more space this has to breath the better. Everything I played sounded acceptable. Do not expect audiophile quality. This is not that device. I feel that the speaker falls apart at volume. The vocals remain clear but at the expense of the rest of the music. Maybe this won’t be as much of an issue at a collage party where everyone is competing with the music. But, for casual listening, this is best played at medium to low volume. The Mega Base option does increase the thump thump of rock, pop, and rap music. I found this feature put some authority into the music. It is not as powerful as a dedicated subwoofer but good enough for the garden and workshop. I think multiple PG10’s would be required to power an actual party like a dorm room gathering. Otherwise, the base from a single unit will be absorbed by your party attendees. Applications: The Sony Music Center application does a great job of controlling this unit. It will allow switching between inputs, gave me a quick launch button to Spotify and Fiestable, and EQ settings, and other options not directly accessible by the speakers control panel. I can also control the volume for each input. This is not a full remote control. For example, I cannot turn the speaker on or off using Music Center. I played with Fiestable for about five minutes. The app gives you motion controls over the PG10. It also allows you to use your smart phone as a microphone for Karaoke. You can turn up the volume up and down with a flick of your phone up or down. You can skip music tracks by flicking the phone back and forth. The last thing I want to do is flick my very expensive iPhone in any direction. I found none of these expanded features useful. Maybe you will. Portability: The unit is lite and easy to move around. There are built in handles located under the wings. Just fold up the wings, grab the handles, and off you go. Final Impression: Overall, I have mixed feelings about this unit. The sound is clear. The woofer will thump when Mega Base is turned on. I feel the sonic experience is too dependent on the EQ, volume, listening location, and the status of the wings. Sometimes it sounds great and other times it struggles. I will most likely use this speaker in places where I do not already have music such as the garden, my shed, and in my basement workshop. I did try playing this at party music levels and felt the unit struggled. The voicing was crystal clear at the expense of the rest of the sonic experience. I do like the look of the unit, connectivity options, its portability, and the mega base options. I hope to get many ears of service out of this. I hope you found this review useful.

More than loud enough for a backyard BBQ ! Sound quality is clear even at maximum volume. Great FM reception. Battery lasts a long time but obviously it will vary with how loud you keep the speaker. I read some don't like it doesn't have a handle or its too heavy. Its not heavy. I dont get it... just grab it on the hand "cut-outs" on the sides and go. Great purchase.
