A photography enthusiast friend recently purchased the Sony NEX-6, raved about it and went as far as selling his DLSR and lenses and only used the Sony NEX-6. I found an Open Box special for a Sony NEX-6 and decided to give it a try. Glad I did, I carry this camera everywhere I go and use it more than my DSLRs. The menus are easy to navigate for the most part. Ergonomics are great and the image quality rivals many DSLRs. Like I've done, if you do have a lenses from your film or digital SLR camera you can purchase lens adapters for most lens mounts and use the lens on your Sony NEX-6.

Fun travel camera with DSLR capabilities

The Sony Nex-6 has a lot of features packed into a small body. It's size and light weight make it the perfect camera for travel and hiking. The ergonomics are simply unbeatable for such a small camera. You can hold it one-handed and shoot with confidence, even without a strap. I do think it's a bit expensive considering there are DSLRs (Cannon, Nikon, Pentax) sold at a similar price. HOWEVER, I bought it because I wanted a very compact, interchangeable lens camera with DSLR capabilities. And, the larger sensor is a no-brainer (for better image quality) . This camera takes excellent pictures, especially if you take full advantage of all its features. I don't expect anyone to spend this kind of money only to shoot in auto mode. If that's your goal, stick with a less expensive point and shoot. There are plenty out there that do a decent job. For someone graduating from a point-and-shoot, this camera is very easy to use. It tells you what each setting is for as you navigate through the menu. It's like having a built-in, user friendly manual. If you don't want this feature, you can simply turn it off. Concerning the pop-up flash, you can bend it back (carefully) to bounce light for a softer image. This is a also a cool feature. I love the DSLR-like mode dial at the top of the camera, with aperture priority, shutter priority and full-manual setting. You can choose between auto and manual focus, different metering modes and auto or manual white balance. Autofocus seems pretty fast with the kit 16-50mm lens, especially in bright light. I'm still pretty new to manual mode so there is a learning curve. Image quality is superb for such a little camera, thanks to the larger sensor which provides greater dynamic range. I mainly shoot in manual mode using jpeg setting. I like the raw option as well, although I haven't used it yet. It's good to know it's there as I do plan to use it. Raw will retain more detail in the shadows and highlights. This camera comes with its own photo processing software but I haven't tried it yet. I'm using iPhoto which is pretty simplistic. I'll have to buy Adobe Lightshop soon. The things I don't like about this camera (with helpful suggestions): - Cheap lens cap that has the potential to scratch the lens. It's also easy to lose. Buy a good UV filter (40.5mm,) immediately to protect it. In fact any camera lens should have a UV filter. The filter size is under specifications on the Sony site. - The cheap eyelets for camera straps jiggle, which will interfere with video sound. I recommend removing these immediately. If you need a strap, buy a Jobi. It will screw in where you'd attach the tripod. It's an expensive but excellent camera strap that doesn't get in the way of shooting. - In manual mode, the camera takes about 1.5 seconds to process between shots (especially in low light). So it's hard to capture fast moving objects...., unless you use continuous shooting or auto setting for moving objects. I'll have to play around more with different settings and features to see what works best. And, that's the beauty of this camera. It has a lot of potential once you learn to use its many features. I haven't used video yet or downloaded any apps so can't provide any feedback here. I've uploaded some bird pictures that I recently took in manual mode with jpeg setting and a little bit of cropping.

This is a great camera. We have gotten good quality pictures in many different conditions. Indoor, outdoor, macro, they all seem to come out looking very nice. We had the NEX-3 before this and the things that this camera does better is having the best electronic view finder I have ever seen on a camera, a mode dial for selecting auto, program, manual without having to go through the menus, a regular flash hot shoe and WiFi to send pictures to your smart phone / tablet. (using the Sony app). We also had a Canon T1i that we are ready to get rid of because this camera does so much more with much less weight and size. Having come mostly from the DSLR cameras, we are not big fans of the power zoom lens and mostly use the standard 18-55mm lens from our NEX-3 along with the 55-210mm zoom. It also does a very nice job recording HD video. If you are looking for something you don't need pump iron to hold, this is a good choice.

This camera does it all with high qualtiy. The small form factor means it is more portable than a larger DSLR. The photo quality is excellent, even with the kit lens. All the controls are easily accessible. I do not miss the touchscreen because fine-tuning shutter speed, aperture, and ISO is at your fingertips. It even includes focus peaking, which shows you a digitized line around the object when it comes into focus. This feature, along with the electronic viewfinder, makes for some crisp, clean shots. The battery doesn't last long, and Sony's pathetic attempt at apps is shocking compared to the high quality of this camera. These shortcomings in no way take away the NEX-6 from it's "best in the business" distinction.

Fantastic camera in a compact package

I initially purchased the NEX-5R because of all of the excellent reviews that I read about the camera. I was looking for a model that would take excellent pictures, but I also wanted something smaller than a standard DSLR. The NEX was perfect on a recent snowboarding vacation because I was able to throw it in a camera backpack and easily take it with me all over the mountain. In addition, I took it with me at night when we'd go out to dinner and it was nice to have a great camera in such a small size. After returning from vacation with the NEX-5R, I decided to exchange it for the NEX-6 primarily because the NEX-6 adds the digital viewfinder (which comes in handy when shooting in bright sunlight). The NEX-6 also feels a little more substantial than the NEX-5R. I've had the NEX-6 for several weeks and couldn't be happier. I took advantage of the promo that offered $100 off the 55-210mm zoom lens with the purchase of a NEX camera. The combination of the 16-50mm and 55-210mm lenses offers a ton of flexibility. Since it's a Sony, the interface is pretty intuitive and things work the way that you would expect. The PlayMemories website makes it very easy to install additional applications on the camera (e.g. my favorites are the bracketing app and the app that allows you to use your cell phone as a remote viewfinder to snap pictures from a distance). Down the road, I could see upgrading the lenses. However, the kit and zoom lenses will definitely do the trick for a while. Overall, this is a fantastic camera with tons of features in a small form factor. Highly recommended.

This is a fantastic camera for those who would like to get SLR quality pictures without having to lug around a bigger body SLR camera. Though weight wise these days its a wash, its just the size of the camera that makes the difference. I should say, having read other reviews I was a bit worried about the software and the lack of friendliness associated, but to my experience, it was a breeze. The GUI is pretty clear and straight forward, I did not have time to read through the manual, so pretty much figured out intuitively browsing the menu's. Picture quality is awesome up until you hit ISO1600, then it starts to get more and more noisy. But hitting that high an ISO in my case was rare enough not to worry much about it. Couple of observations I have made so far that's worth noting are 1) When using the wide angle lens 16 -55mm use low ISO speeds of no more than 3200 to avoid noise/grains in the picture. Low lighting conditions, its better to use the 18-55mm lens that doen't come with the NEX-6, I think that lens is a bit bigger and captures more light than the 16-55mm. Then again not bad at all, it's just an observation 2) Battery life is not as good. I went out on an Alaska cruise for 6 hours , with a few flash photography, some video's and ~100 still pics I ran out of battery before i finished my trip. I wish it lasted a tad longer. Maybe a spare batter is a must. 3) I still think Sony uses some sort of a picture touchup in the software that tends to make the pic's smooth & glossy instead of leaving it as is. When I shoot in raw i'm happy, but then I do not want to be processing all pics taken in raw, I rather prefer the camera to output the pics as is. I have a 8MP Canon HD camcorder, still pics from that device appears to be sharper and clear compared to automatic shoot on Sony NEX-6, raw pics however match the performance with lot more detail at 16MP

My husband and I decided on this camera after looking at many cameras with comparable specs. We needed a camera that would capture many pictures in a short amount of time for our fast moving toddler since we always ended up with blurry pictures with our previous camera. The things we love about this camera include the ability to shoot quickly, the way it takes clear photos even in dark lighting, and its small size. We are in no way professional photographers and this camera is way over our heads in most aspects, but it is still simple enough for us to use and be happy with our resulting pictures. I would suggest buying extra batteries as we used two full batteries each day on our last Disney trip.

Absolutely love everything about this camera. It is the most user friendly as well as smallest dslr I have ever owned. Takes amazing photos with out having to carry 20lbs of equipment around. Since I have owned I have yet to even uncase my nikon d7000. For me this is now a replacement and It is effortless to take everywere. Bravo Sony! I absolutely love this camera so far. There are many options with it, and I am a bit of a novice when it comes to the finer details of cameras. But, the great thing about this camera is that it gives you on-screen tips for what all the different options and modes will do. This is really helpful when trying to decide the best settings for a particular shot. I wanted something that would take good photos of my daughter flying through the air in her ballet performances, and sometimes in very low light. This one did an amazing job with that. I also do architectural artwork from photos I take, and it does a great job with that also. Because I got this camera as an open box deal, it was an even sweeter value. The Sony NEX-6 rocks!

Purchased this camera as an 'open box' for a great price. My expectations were that it would be a fun camera but wouldn't be a serious camera capable of replacing a Canon 7d, and I was wrong. After a few days shooting with the camera I realized the focus accuracy was really impressive. I was getting 85%-90% spot on focus with my son running and playing in the yard. I know the 7d should have beaten this percentage but it just didn't, perhaps the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens was just too slow or I didn't use the best auto focus setting in the 7d, as I am primarily a studio photographer. Either way, the Nex-6 impressed me right away. The first shoot with it was the nail in the coffin for the 7d as I shoot model videos (and photos). The Nex-6 shines in video work with it's auto focusing. I was tired of the extensive setup for the 7d for manual focus work, using rails and a follow focus on a big tripod with a large fluid head (Manfrotto MVH502AH), mainly because the auto focusing of the 7d is rubbish - for video. The Nex-6 delivers beautiful video and this won me over and a few days later I sold the 7d. The Nex-6 isn't perfect though. My one complaint is the menu system. I know it but still fumble around during paid shoots, when trying to hurry to change a setting. Thus I much prefer the new menu of the A6000/A7's. One aspect I thought I'd never use is the Picture Styles. I really like the toy car look and high contrast b&w. Granted these settings are not used for professional purposes but for out and about shooting, they are a nice addition. I haven't tried any apps but will get the time lapse app for my first one. In the end, this little camera makes me want to shoot again. I don't mind taking it to family gatherings. Just this past March at my son's birthday party I left the 7d in its bag until almost everybody had gone before I snapped a couple photos. I took the Nex-6 to my nephews b-day party and took photos & video, nobody rolled their eyes or ducked for cover, that is nice. Lastly, I'm tired of reviewers and others saying this is nearly like a dslr. The nex-6 beats the 7d for photo quality easily according to dxomark and my eyes. It has a bigger dynamic range and more color depth.

To make it short, as there's detailed good reviews over here, I've been using a Nikon D90 for almost 4 years and loved this camera very much. When I decided it's time to update, compactness was my first priority but with minimal loss in the quality and the usability. Well, after almost 3 weeks with the NEX6, I can confirm that image quality is definitely there, especially in JPEG. With raw, as the kit lens has clearly visible vignetting and distortion especially at 16mm, you need either the Sony image data converter (excellent for automatic correction) or Lightroom with a profile. But IMO this is only needed for delicate situations (high contrast, use of very high ISO, lots of dynamic range). JPEG are really excellent for most occasions. (I know other people swear only by RAW, they probably should skip the 16-50). High ISO performance is good, 1600 is usable straight out of camera, and 6400 is not that bad after Lightroom correction. As for usability, it's not yet as good as an advanced/expert DSLR. I like how the rear dial can be used for multiple functions and replaces few buttons (ISO, exposure compensation and drive mode) but it requires a 3-step operation instead of 2 with physical buttons. AF speed and accuracy is good, almost as good as in a DSLR except for moving subjects and low light. But few seconds delay for focusing is not a big deal if you're not shooting action. The Fn button is a life savior to change a lot of settings (e.g. AF and metering modes) without diving in the awful menu. To sum it up, I would consider that what we lose in ease and speed of settings is largely compensated by the compactness of this camera when the 16-50 is mounted. It fits in large pockets, you can carry it on your shoulder a whole day and you won't feel it. If you need other lenses, you can put them in any pocket. I have the promising 35mm f/1.8 on order and I'm currently using the Nikon 50mm f/1.8G and the Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 via an adapter. Manual focusing is easy with focus peaking and magnification, although it requires several seconds to achieve. Ah yes, the EVF is really nice, and I'm already used to it. The image is as large as in a Full frame DSLR, and the possibility to preview the image that will be captured is a very convenient feature that compensates the lack of "reality" that is lost compared to an optical viewfinder. After all, what's the point of direct view through the optical viewfinder if the sensor will not capture it as we see it? Higly recommended for DSLR shooters that look for a compact and very capable camera.

Love the NEX6!!! Sony finally got it right with the NEX6. Great balance of features/performance, very happy. Came with the smaller 16-55 lens with power zoom which is awesome. Really makes the camera compact. I picked up the 55-210mm and very happy with this lens as well. Look out for open boxes, mine was open, it saved me some and it was in mint condition. From compares online with NEX7, unless you need the 24mp I would go for NEX6 which seems to have better low light performance and phase detect hybrid autofocus which is faster. This is really a great product. I had the NEX5 a year or so before and returned due to no view finder and price of lenses, but I changed my mind on NEX6 and I'm glad I did, it has everything that was missing from NEX5 plus more.

I bought this camera at Best Buy for almost half the original list price after price drop due to release of a6000. I love my Fujifilm X20, but the NEX 6 features an APS-C sensor which is much larger that the X20's 2/3" sensor. And, it also offers a much better feature package, including a superb EVF. I've purchased additonal lenses; 18-105mm f4 zoom; 50mm 1.8 prime, and Sigma 30mm. The kit lens is a great walkaround lens and keeps the camera very compact in size. However, it isn't a fast lens. My favorite lens on the NEX 6 is the 50mm f1.8. I've shot some incredible available light portraits with it in the few weeks I've had it. I used the 18-105mm F4 zoom to cover a school program in low light conditions and the results were fantastic. This is my first experience with Sony mirrorless cameras and I'm now a convert. I just bought the Sony a7 and will be selling my Canon bodies. I bought an EF to E-mount adapter so I can use all my Canon lenses. Sony's lens selection (for full frame a7) is sparse right now, but they are adding lenses all the time. If you can grab an NEX 6 at the low closeout price, do it! You won't be sorry.

Super little camera, full featured and easy to handle. Nice user interface with all the features one would expect in a prosumer dslr. As mentioned above this little beast integrates nicely into my existing kit. Was going to wait for the A6000 but best buy sale price closed the deal here! The little 16-50 zoom is nice too but only with JPEGs - it distorts badly without the Sony software. Sony has issued a new firmware update to keep NEX-6 friendly with new lenses.
