When I first installed a blink system at my house years ago, I did have some challenges finding the perfect location for the sync module because its range was not very good. (I was able to figure it out, but it took a little creativity on my part.) As the system has evolved over time, however, some of these distance concerns have been addressed and the XR line of equipment, including this sync module, apparently addresses it. To begin, the installation was very simple. I was a little concerned that I would experience challenges given that I already had a blink system (and a sync module) installed. That was not the case. Just scan the QR code on the device in the blink app, follow the directions, and that was all there was to it. The replacement of the old sync module and installation of this one took only a minute or two. Very simple and easy. The unit does have a micro SD card slot that allows for local backup of clips. Personally, I am not sure how useful or beneficial that is, at least for my personal home use. From what I could tell, those recordings can be downloaded only for XR cameras and, if I understand correctly, it looks like only two XR cameras can be paired with this single sync module. Along those lines, the additional range when paired with XR cameras is of limited value if you need more than two cameras. My system has six cameras total, only two of which are "XR" cameras, so I fell within these constraints. If I were to purchase multiple XR cameras, however, I have no idea how that is accommodated. Would I need another sync module (in addition to this one)? Can all the cameras be used with this sync module, but I am limited to extended range with only two of them? That may be something to research and it is the reason why this sync module did not earn a 5-star rating. Thus far, the blink system has been plug-and-play, for the most part. Constraints such as the number of XR cameras that can be used with the XR sync module (when additional non-XR devices can still be used) creates confusion and does reduce the utility of the device. Still, if you have a smaller system or only need/have two XR cameras, going with this sync module (as opposed to a different or older version) definitely makes sense.

Great addition for the outdoor cam 4

The Sync module XR is a great addition to the outdoor cam 4. The house I have these installed in is a very large house with a lot of property. It allows me to place outdoor cameras much further away from module due to its extended range. The blink module only needs to be powered and within wifi range so it does not have to be in the same space as your router. The other feature that I like about the module XR is the ability to add an SD card for storage. The only downside is that it only allows for a 256gb SD card but as long as the cameras are not in a high traffic area this should not be an issue. I am currently in my 30 day trial window for the cloud service but my understanding is that you can store footage locally without cloud service. This was one of the main reasons I wanted this module for my camera. This is a great option for anyone who wants to place there cameras far away and still have connectivity. For example, placing them on a storage shed or detached garage. The cameras can be 250-400 ft away from the module depending on which mode you are in. As long as my assumption above turns out to be true, this is also a great option for someone who does not want to use cloud service and would rather their footage be stored locally.

Extra Range is Noticeable Over Base Product

This is the perfect device if your Outdoor 4 Cameras and Floodlight are spread over opposite ends of the house like mine are. I was having some slow connection issues and laggy app experience using the baseline Sync Module and this extended range module solved those problems. Now I have a much clearer experience from my cameras on all sides of the house. I also like that it swaps the flash drive port for a microSD. I have more of those laying around my house than I do flash drives. Setting this up was super easy. I had to disconnect my primary sync module first as this extended range model replaces it instead of supplementing it. This is also significantly more aesthetic than the other one with it's smooth white surface and rounded edges. It's pretty much just plug and play. The lights clearly indicate that the unit is powered on and the WiFi is connected so you can tell at a glance passing by that it is operating correctly. I also noticed a faster experience connecting via cellular data on my phone when I'm away from the house instead of on WiFi so that's a big win.

    Extended Range, But With Trade-offs

The Blink Sync Module XR is meant to address one of the biggest limitations of any wire-free security camera system — range. The Sync Module XR provides extended range for the Blink Outdoor 4 and Outdoor 4 Floodlight, enabling users to place up to two Blink cameras at up to 250 feet from the module (up to 400 feet in XR+ mode) This can be a real game changer for people looking to cover detached garages, large yards or other parts of their property that can be far away from each other. But in practice, while the concept is good there are significant downsides. Setup & Compatibility: If you already use Blink devices, configuring the Sync Module XR is easy. It works well with the Blink app, letting users control up to 10 devices per module. But only two devices can access the XR functionality, so if you need extended range features for additional cameras, you’ll need to purchase a second module (and only two Sync Module XRs are allowed per Blink account). Local storage, which allows recording clips to a MicroSD card (up to 256GB, sold separately) instead of ponying up for a Blink Subscription Plan, is another helpful feature. That’s a good start, but it’s worth noting that local storage was part of previous Sync Modules, and in this case, it comes at an additional cost. Performance: A Mixed Bag The Sync Module XR's calling card is extended camera range. Its effectiveness is hugely determined by environmental factors—things like walls, trees, interference, and topography all dictate whether or not the range gain is significant. Another major limitation is video quality. Resolution in XR mode maxes at 720p, which is lower than Blink’s default 1080p; in XR+ mode, resolution drops to just 360p, and two-way audio is disabled. That means that you may have coverage at distances longer than possible with your other cameras but the video is not likely going to be sharp enough to monitor finer details. Speed is another concern. Connected via XR mode I have noted some delays in the live view and loading times of clips seems slightly slower than cameras connected via a regular Sync Module. Price vs Value: The Blink Sync Module XR is a niche solution at its price point. If you have range problems with your Blink Outdoor 4 cameras, this may help—but only if your environment permits it. For those who need top-quality footage, the trade-offs in video quality and performance may be too great. If your cameras already work without disconnecting frequently, this module won’t add value. But if your cameras are having trouble connecting and you are willing to sacrifice resolution for extended range, it may be worth having. Final Verdict: Buy if: • You have large property and lose connection beyond 100 feet. • You want local storage without paying for Blink. • You don’t mind sacrificing some video quality for extra range. Skip if: • You have a reliable connection with your existing Blink cameras. • You want all cameras to have 1080p resolution, consistently. • Two-way audio requires extended range mode

    XR does it better

My blink home system consists of a sync module, a video doorbell, a Gen 4 outdoor camera, a Gen 4 wireless floodlight camera and 3 indoor cameras. Before changing to the sync module XR my Wi-Fi signal weakened as you got further away from the module and resulted in a lag in the real-time video loading-at times 10 seconds or more which can be very inconvenient when you are worried something could be happening at your home. I also noticed that my cameras that are plugged in and have a constant power supply have fewer issues than the wireless ones. Unfortunately, my outdoor cameras are in locations with no access to an outlet. I recently replaced my blink sync module with the 3rd gen blink sync module XR (Extended Range) in hopes of improving the connection and response time of my blink 4th gen outdoor cameras. I did not relocate any of my existing devices-I just changed out the sync module. I have only been using the new module for about 1 week and I have noticed a faster loading speed for real-time video in addition to improved picture quality with my outdoor cameras. I did have to reinstall my floodlight camera after changing the module because it went offline shortly after and despite using the troubleshooting guidelines from blink, I was unable to get it back up and running until I reinstalled it. Any reinstallation of an outside camera is a bit inconvenient for me since it requires climbing on a ladder to reach the camera. I was thinking of adding another Gen 4 outdoor camera to my system but noted that you can only connect 2 of them to the sync module XR while in XR mode (but can connect up to 10 while in Wi-Fi mode like my pre-existing sync module). Adding the additional camera will require me to reconfigure the location of my outdoor cameras or purchase an additional sync module XR. Thankfully blink products are reasonably priced and neither option will break the bank. I highly recommend the new sync module XR as well as all of the blink products when considering smart security for your home.

Reliable Extended WiFi Range for Outdoor Cameras

I am very much invested into the Blink ecosystem of security cameras, both indoor and outdoor, including our doorbell as well. I have found that for the most part, overall, they are a relatively good system, with clear pictures, videos/recordings, sound, and movement detection. We have a setup of some indoor ones inside our house, and Outdoor 4 ones in the front of our house and in our backyard. When I am away from home and access the app to look at the indoor cameras, it is pretty instantaneous when I tap on each of the cameras to when the live feed comes up on the screen. However, when I do this to access the outdoor cameras there is a bit of a lull and wait until the live feed finally pops up. This is why I decided to try out this system hub to extended the range of our home WiFi. The end result—it really does work, and it works well. Now when I tap on the outdoor cameras it is on par with the indoor cameras in that the live feed comes up almost instantaneously with no waiting. Setup is very easy within the Blink app; it is exactly like setting up the original (non-extended range) sync module. It took me only a couple of minutes from start to finish. I did not try out the local storage (which can be achieved with a MicroSD card purchased separately) because I subscribe to the yearly Blink Plus plan, mainly for the unlimited supported devices and unlimited cloud storage. If you have the Blink Outdoor 4 cameras (which are the only cameras that this sync module is compatible with), this blink sync module XR is well worth it.

    frequently goes offline

XR model keeps going offline and did not have this issue with old module. The only option is to reboot, not very useful when away from home.
