2nd TCL - great features

I bought this TV over the weekend and it was delivered yesterday.
I'm pretty familiar with the TCL Roku TV experience as I've upgraded from the 49S403. However, the item that is most confusing about this tv is that the corners are darkened. Particularly the bottom left, top left and top right. The bottom right seems alright - is this expected or should I be asking BB for a replacement?

When it works great, frustrating otherwise...

I picked up this TV from Best Buy on Black Friday. The color calibration/white balance stock is very meh. But once you calibrate it using the expert setting in the iphone Roku app, it is great. After that I tested out the in TV smart apps that come with the TV. It is all provided by roku and works really well. The problems arise when you use the HDMI ports on the TV. I didn't find out until about two months in to ownership when I finally upgraded my Xbox one to a One X. As soon as I tried to play 4K HDR content through the One X I was presented with a variety of problems, from the image being dim to completely scrambled. More frustrating was that it happened every ten or so times that you start them up. Now a quick solution as a band aid is to back out to the home screen on the tv and reselect the input. Usually it comes back up appropriately colored, or with the correct brightness at that point. But, that is really unacceptable for a brand new TV to not be making HDMI handshakes correctly and causing the user to do this considering that it is advertised and sold as an HDR/4K ready TV. I mean it is a huge selling point for this model, to not work well with HDR/4K means it is defective for its intended purpose.
In my frustration I replaced the HDMI cables with new ones, same problem, reset the TV, same problem, changed all the settings for the HDMI inputs in the menus, same problem, plugged the HDMI directly from the source into the TV, same problem, bought second 4K HDR source (roku streaming stick), same problem, I eliminated all the possibilities that this is occurring on the source end of it, same problem.
So I called TCL and they sent a technician, I repeated it for the technician and the TV boards were replaced (twice on separate occasions, each time the problem occurred again). I then sent in more videos of it and complained again. TCL sent a new TV, end of the day after it was installed, same problem. I called again, a new TV is being sent to my house to replace the last one. If I were to speculate and guess I would say they have at best a firmware issue (that will never be resolved as they have a new model coming out this year and so the efforts they will spend on the old models are likely nill), or at worst a physical design defect that can only be corrected by a new part, which again has even less of a chance of being worked on than the firmware.
So the review boils down to this. When it is working it is a fantastic TV for the price, good clear picture, great color representation, decent brightness, (not the greatest viewing angle or grey screen uniformity if I am honest), and great feature set. But I have yet to have it just work, like almost all other TVs that I have owned have (from Samsung, LG, even no name knock off brands).
I cannot in good conscience recommend this to people because it is so unbelievably frustrating to have issues like this happen. If I did it again I would just spend more on another brand that did not have these issues. It is too frustrating to be sitting here getting replacement after replacement and no solutions.
I am certainly not the only person with this issue, Redit has a thread dedicated to it where people just say I guess I have to live with it. I don't think that is acceptable, it doesn't have to be perfect, but it needs to work as advertised, and this model just hasn't.
To be fair to TCL their customer service has been excellent as far as taking the time to address the concern and trying to solve the problem.
If I were not having so many problems with it, I would give it 4 to 5 stars. But the problems knock it down. Look elsewhere for your HDR/4K needs.

4 Yrs then Screen went Black

This has been my favorite TV until the screen went black. You can control the volume and you can tell that the backend still works because if you click just right you can start a movie and hear it but no picture. For the cost point I should have known better. The Good: Great picture, Roku built in, easy to use, and works with Amazon Alexa. 3 HDMI ports with one that if connected to your stereo will turn your stereo on. Really an amazing TV for the 4 years that it worked. It is hanging on a wall and is a great family size.

Incredible TV, especially for the price. With Dolby Vision, HDR 10 and local dimming, you can't beat this TV. Watch the UHD version of The Neon Demon either on blu ray or streaming (I found it on Amazon) and be blown away.

Awesome TV for an amazing price. For $599 this TV offers great quality image and software. Super fast and never lags. At first the image might not look so great, but after using it for a few days it will improve significantly. You will not regret making this purchase!

I was looking for a new tv for the soon to be released xbox one x. This was a great value that has pretty much the lowest input lag I could find for a true 4k tv. Also you won't find anything comparable in this price range. It's a steal at this point.

If you want the latest software update to 8.0 you are out of luck.. You have to buy - ready? - A separate Roku box..thst is correct. All of my Roku boxes have updated to version 8.0 with great new features that this tv does not get because it will not update no matter what. Don't even try to call TCL or Roku for help - TCL CS reps hardly speak English.. And apparently you have to pay for Roku help with a credit card.. So if you want a TV that will be current with its operating system buy a different one.. other than that nice tv but its being donated to the church raffle and Im going to buy a better TV. Would have given it at least 4 stars..but its already outdated do it gets 1 star for at least working for tv part..

TV Stopped working in 3 weeks! Bricked

Excellent picture quality on 4K content. Very dark blacks and most Netflix 4k content played flawlessly.
The TV worked great for about 3 weeks, then there was a message that "Device is overheating, check Roku". Switched off the TV and it never turned back on again! There is a always on white status light below center of the TV but it doesn't start anymore. Trying to return it to Bestbuy (don't know their return policy for online purchases but hope they are good) and never buy another TCL Roku TV again.
This is my first purchase of a TCL Roku TV as well as from Bestbuy itself (recently moved to the States) so it just leaves a bad feeling over the whole experience (without a TV during the Christmas holidays)

Value for dollar is unbeatable

The value per dollar spent for this display is unbelievable. Is it the best in the market? No. But for 600 bucks you won't find anything close. It's a great display, and the Roku interface is slick and fast. Highly recommend.

The picture is WOW. Blacks are great. The Roku interface it eh compared the Apple TV but it gets the job done and supports 4K. Light TV and the blacks are amazing! Looks far better than my brother’s 1000 dollar LG 4K TV.

Best 600.00 I’ve ever spent. There are a few areas where this set comes up short but it’s 90% as good as a Sony or Samsung twice its price.

Not so great

I really wanted to like this TV. Easy setup and Roku worked great. Picture was really good as well. The cons came when I sat down and watched a hockey game and I noticed what looked to be smudges on the screen when the camera panned over the white surface of the rink. Turns out, this TV has terrible gray uniformity a.k.a "dirty screen effect." If you never watch a hockey game, it's great; but now that's all I notice when I watch games. These smudges appear in the exact same spots and it's a distraction. I returned for a Samsung 55UM6300 and I am much more satisfied.

TV was great until it died...

I'm not gonna trash this TV because I was happy with it right up until the point it died.
It was purchased on 11/26/17 and worked great up until the last week of January when I started having black screen issues. The TV would power on and I'd get sound but no video. Unplugging it and plugging it back it resolved the issue the first few times this happened.
Yesterday 2/8/18 I powered it on to a black screen only this time the plug/unplug fix didn't work. TV was dead and never came back on so I returned it yesterday evening and went with an OLED.
"You get what you pay for" might apply here... or maybe I just got unlucky.
Right up until the TV died I had no complaints other than the remote sensors being located at the bottom of the screen. With the TV on a stand I had my soundbar in front of the TV and it blocked the remote so I ended up having to elevate the TV 2 1/2 inches to clear the soundbar so the remote was usable.
I'd recommend this TV as the best budget TV available but I'd also tell people that mine died after 9 weeks of use.
I got lucky though being an elite plus member... my holiday return period was thru 2/13/18 so at least the TV died now instead of later where I'd have been stuck dealing with a repairman and even more headaches.

T.V. essentially dead on arrival since the remote doesn't work. Roku has a phenomenal app to use to control this t.v. but you 1st have to connect it to the internet. This is only possible with the original remote or a universal remote. Neither in my case work as the IR sensor is defective. Here I am on a Friday night with the wife with no freaking t.v. as we donated our previous one when we bought this TCL. Wife not happy, I'm not happy and Best Buy/TCL should not be happy after the social media campaign I have waged against their customer service.

This TV is a must buy for ANYONE looking at a 4K panel with HDR. Dolby vision with 72 zones for $600? That's ridiculous. We may see some serious comp in the pipeline.

First off I wanted to say the picture quality looks incredible. Haven't had that wow factor with a hdr set at this price range! But sadly.. you get what you pay for. Me being a videophile made this suck!! May not bother most people but it wasn't for me. I played the panel lottery and lost twice. First time I had terrible dirty screen effect and a dead pixel. Second set had really bad backlight bleed and a stuck pixel!! I decided to return and save up for a better set. Just know what you will be getting yourself into before you buy! Risky.
