This is one of those movies your parents will enjoy. It has actors they will recognize, an easy to follow story, and did we mention those guys with the arm bands and funny hats? It's slightly funny but not a laugh riot, looks good but not special compared to other World War films recently. It's easy going like a cold drink on a hot day, not many calories in this one but it will do the trick to entertain you for a couple hours.

We watched the Monuments Men for a second time as an after dinner, date movie. It has all the elements of entertaining movie where time flies by - the storyline, humor, glimpses of art and atrocities, adventure. Even the soliloquy about the importance of art in preserving humanity and culture was fitting and succinct. Very much worth your time and money.

Preserve and protect the world's greatest art

George Clooney directed this movie, and stars as George Stout, the man who puts a mission together to preserve, and protect the world's greatest art. The Group is named 'The Monument's Men' who are sent on an almost impossible mission as they risk their lives, in a race against time to avoid destruction of the art, and return it to their rightful owners. The art is trapped behind enemy lines, with the German Army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell. This movie is based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, as the artistic Masterpieces are planned to be rescued from German thieves. The movie portrays a dark spot in history that covers the screen with explosive action, as the tension increases during 'mission impossible.' Some of the team members gave a superb acting performance: Matt Damon; Bill Murray; John Goodman; and Cate Blanchett were fantastic. The entire cast grabbed your attention with the roles they played, and sound effects were excellent. The compelling story was informative and historic, with an incredible setting that grabs your attention immediately. Overall, this movie is packed with drama, and action until the end. Interesting, entertaining, great acting, and worth an Oscar. I haven't seen a good historic movie in a long time, one I could rave about. This intriguing movie filled the gap, and was totally satisfying. Highly recommended to all those who enjoy history movies, and war stories!

The movie's best quality is its willingness to be real about the heroes' prospects and illustrate how hard it is to make a moral or philosophical case for their mission when millions have already died. When a field officer informs Clooney's Frank Stokes that even though a particular church contains significant art, they'll still bomb it if Germans decide to use it as a hiding place, you understand in practical terms where he's coming from, because the lead-up to this conversation took you to the beach at Normandy, post-D-Day, then past many bombed-out cityscapes. "The Monuments Men" presents its heroes as mice skittering through the margins of history, trying not to get stepped on. They're mostly too old or out-of-shape to be effective soldiers, and they're aware that the combat troops they pass in the field would support their mission only to the point where they had to choose between saving a Picasso and getting shot.

This film is loosely based on the non-fiction book, "The Monuments Men", by Robert M. Edsel. It brings to light a part of history, which most likely, not many have ever heard about. But a TV series might have been a better vehicle for the "monuments men" stories than a feature film. The film is episodic and poorly structured and its good intentions are hampered by its lack of pace, direction, tone and properly fleshed-out characters. I would still recommend seeing the film - if for no other reason than to learn a little more history than you thought you knew.

Unlike some of the reviews that I read dissing the movie, "The Monument Men", I must say that I enjoyed the film and thought it was worth my purchase. Often times, I evaluate a DVD purchase on whether I will ever watch it again. I will watch this movie again. As expected, actor/director George Clooney is a solid lead. As always, I enjoyed John Goodman and Bill Murray and, even though it's kind of a throwaway role, I thought Matt Damon did a nice job with his character. One of the true stars, however, was the little-known (at least to me) British actor Hugh Bonneville who was a nice surprise. Based on actual events, war movie fans should find plenty to like in "The Monument Men".

Adapted from a richly detailed book about the Allied art preservation effort during World War 2, The Monuments Men struggles to decide the type of movie it wants to be. Having read the book, I was expecting The Monuments Men to be a cross between an adventure movie like The Da Vinci Code and a fun war movie like Stalag 17 or The Dirty Dozen but got a strange mixture of heist movie, 40s propaganda movie, and light war story. While enjoyable and worth a purchase for fans of WW2 movies or any of the actors within, the repeat watch value of this movie would make it a rental in my book. I would recommend this to a friend, albeit with the caveats of my previous sentence.

This film was a surprise to me in that it was not about six or eight adventurers and funny men, was not a World War II edition of Oceans 11, but is the several tales of art experts, acting alone or in pairs, commissioned as a group to locate and save art stolen. The individual actors play to form, the history was interesting, the writing was predictable and substandard. I'll probably not replay this, but, for those interested in World War II and its small stories, this is worth spending to see. Certainly it is not an epic or moving war adventure in the ilk of Saving Private Ryan.

I enjoyed the movie, especially due to learning the magnitude of Hitler's art theft, his willingness to destroy all if he couldn't have it for himself, and the heroic efforts of the Monuments Men to save as much as they could. Clearly, trying to cover their mission in a 2 hour and 40 minute movie was a challenge, but I felt there were some important details glossed over to save time that would have better explained exactly how they did their sleuthing to find the art. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable movie and glad they put their lives on the line for such a noble cause.

A Small Portion of Something Bigger

Film: I enjoyed the film and found it to be a very interesting and intriguing story. Unfortunately, the film feels like a small portion of something much bigger. Upon completion of the film, you feel like there was so much more that you didn't get to see; that this was almost a summary of a far richer and deeper story. It is a good watch, but could have benefited from some extra runtime. Product: The film looks and sounds great on Blu-ray. The packaging was in excellent condition and included a slipcover. No complaints.

True story that saved Europe's treasures for today

A riveting true story of the American program in WW II that saved most of Europe's treasures that we still enjoy today. When Hitler had Europe looted, the World almost lost centuries of renowned paintings and sculptures. "Give 'em hell" Harry Truman said NO, and the Monuments Men program was born. We all know about D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, and now you can bring this true story to life as well in a movie with an all star cast, including George Clooney and Matt Damon. A fine selection for the 71st Anniversary of D-Day!

This movies tells of the efforts to preserve pieces of art during World War II. Although I was familiar with accounts of art and possessions being taken from people in war torn areas, I was not aware of the efforts of many from multiple countries fighting to preserve the items and keep them in the hands of the correct owners. I found the book more interesting, but this is a good companion to own along with the book, The Monuments Men. I appreciate having multiple versions of the movie - DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital all in one package.
