It still seems unusual to be setting up a TV with nothing but a power cord plugged into the wall and still being able to view a broad selection of stunning images from all sorts of channels and sources. The Toshiba-Fire TV has a pretty, colorful, and detailed picture. And, it’s definitely a cord cutters dream. Of course, there’s nothing keeping you from adding cable or satellite or whatever.
SETUP: Out of the box I decided to mount my TV on a (robust) mobile stand because we’re likely to wheel this very flexible TV onto our sun porch, or into a spare bedroom, or even the exercise room. With so few wires needed, why not? I also added a Mohu Digital antenna, purchased separately (it’s amplified but can be powered from the TV USB port!!). From here I let the Toshiba-Fire Tv with its Alexa software take over which it did from a series of screen prompts.
The screen at start-up let’s you know what it’s doing, and what you need to do. The Toshiba-FIRE-Alexa software alternates between software/firmware updates of the TV, getting your Internet connection (wireless password or wired) setting, finding what Apps you want loaded, updating the remote control, searching for over-the-air channels (OTA) digital or cable channels or both, and finally providing some guidance on using the screen and the nifty remote. You can feel confident that you’re ready for some TV. It seems that the Toshiba’s digital tuner (with some help from the Mohu Antenna) is quite good, as it was able to get very stable OTA digital channels from locations around my house that could have been a problem. Nice. Its success with my high bandwidth wireless internet is not a surprise, but I had forgotten how many Apps are available from Amazon’s Fire software.
PERFORMANCE: I’ll say it again. This is a very satisfying TV with a crisp, very bright and colorful picture. It gets exceptional picture quality from OTA local digital channels (which can be shockingly better the same channels via compressed cable). The quality is excellent as well with online programming from Netflix, Amazon Prime, MLB, CBS, Smithsonian, etc., etc. Because I also have Directv services, my account authorizes me to access MANY of their channels directly, using APPS such as HGTV, PBS, ESPN, etc. with no need for any wires. This adds flexibility and the channels we like.
The remote uses ALEXA software. It has direct access buttons to your OTA digital channels, Netflix, Amazon prime, HBO, and Playstation. And, there’s that MICROPHONE button on the remote control. I tested this last, because I was pretty sure it would be frustrating. I was wrong. Completely wrong. I held down the MICROPHONE button, and said, “turn TV on”. Bingo! It was on. “Tune to NBC.” Done. “Lower Volume to 0.” Done. “Netflix App”. Done. “Stranger Things”, and that program became available. Good grief. This technology has come a long way. Do you need an Alexa device to operate this TV? Nope. it’s built in. Go ahead and ask for the weather.
Sound quality is as good as it gets from flat panel TVs. It intelligible and doesn’t try to add sound effects that often just make things worse. I always augment TV sound with a sound bar or more, but this TV isn’t rushing me to make that decision. Sounds nice as it is.
COMPROMISES and SUGGESTIONS: Let’s be reasonable. There are significant features and exceptional usability in this modestly priced Toshiba-Fire TV. Something’s got to give. I did a cruel comparison next. I set this TV up next to my premiere OLED TV, a comparison that would be unfair for many more expensive TVs. Compared to the OLED, the Toshiba-Fire’s image appears to get foggy/bluish as you stray off to the sides. Viewed off-center, the Toshiba loses black intensity and color accuracy. This TV looks best viewed straight on. If that isn’t always possible, I’d suggest not mounting it above the viewing area. If it’s on a wall mount or table-top, choose a mount or location that allows you to swivel the TV towards the main seating. Using an image from Netflix’s “Lost in Space” or Amazon Prime’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” on my reference TV and the Toshiba-Fire, the images were remarkable similar from straight on. Very sharp, very colorful and capable of wicked brightness. However, in this comparison, even from directly in front, the less expensive Toshiba Fire couldn’t get the blacks as dark as the comparison TV, but the images were not so different in every other respect.
I found selecting “NATURAL” PICTURE MODE in the settings and dialing back the BACKLIGHT to 75, and a few other adjustments got the sets much closer. A calibration disk is always helpful. As I wandered off to wider viewing angles, the differences became more obvious. Toshiba lets you set the PICTURE MODE differently for each input, HDMI 1-3, Antenna, or the online Streaming Apps. This is a nice feature, as it lets you customize a Blu-ray player for HDMI 1, and customize for streaming differently, and OTA channels also differently. This squeezes the best performance from the TV.
RECOMMENDATIONS: This is a great TV with very useful and easy-to-use features. Everything works. The Toshiba-Fire makes reasonable compromises and still delivers an enjoyable and compelling TV image. It has a detailed and richly colorful image that only pales (literally) next to the most expensive TVs if you try to view too far off center. The Toshiba-Fire TV is easy to recommend.

I was looking for a bigger, brighter TV for my upstairs, window filled, sunny living room. I was already using my Amazon Firestick in my previous tv and loved that setup. When I found this Toshiba with Amazon Fire TV built in to it, it was a no brainer. While skeptical a tv this reasonably priced could be decent, I bought it anyway.
Love this TV. Clear, bright viewing from all angles, amazing sound and a beautiful picture. TV was light enough to set on my mantle and easy to set up. Love the voice controlled Alexa remote that is just like the Firestick remote. Also very cool that the HDMI inputs appear with the apps on the screen so switching the my Direct TV input can be done by voice or a quick app selection.
One last note, this tv powers on in under 2 seconds. It’s amazing. I might go back and buy a couple more of these to replace some other TV’s in my house.

I like the screen size., the colors, and the ease of use (after a little time). I, however, don't like how heavily dependent it is on the Internet or the default startup screen. I would have liked the option to start the TV from my previously viewed channel on live TV. I have to sometimes restart it due to errors. Twice, I have had to factory reset it due to system updates causing it to not function correctly.
I can live with it, but I will think twice next time before I get a FireTV.

Picture quality is excellent. Built in apps is great but I use my Apple TV. It's also echo ready but have not hooked it yet. The only thing I don't like is the 60 hz refresh rate, didn't noticed it when I purchased it. But for the price I'm ok with it. Great buy.

Received this a week and a half ago. Mounted very easily in my kitchen (can a TV ever be too big?:) and the rest of the setup was a breeze. I have a TiVo Mini and an Apple TV 4K connected on HDMI inputs 1 and 2 respectively.
Picture is clear and nice and bright. Very good contrast. Stock settings were decent and only minor adjustments for my viewing. Viewing angles didn't wash out like another TV I haven. For a relatively thin TV, the sound is very strong with good tones.
My main dislikes are the Amazon interface. I just don’t like the tiles and the way I cannot turn on the TV to the last used input (typically the TiVo). Even in the settings it only allows for last row. Hopefully they update this in future firmware. I prefer the Amazon interface through AppleTV and TiVo anyway and for my use, I am using the TiVo remote as my primary (which was easy to setup for power and volume and input selection).
If the TV was $30 less without the integrated Amazon interface, I’d have been happy as well. Very good bargain for a 4K for sure!

Brand response from Toshiba Customer Care

Hi!
Thank you very much for your review comments on our new 55" Amazon Fire TV Edition TV. We take customer's feedback very much into consideration so we have recently enabled a software update that provides a new feature that allows the TV to power up directly to the last input you were watching. This software will be automatically downloaded to the TV when your TV is connected to your home network. You can also check for new software updates from the Settings menu: from that menu navigate to Device & Software -> About -> Check for System Update. If new software is available it will then update.
To change the TV to power up directly to the last input setting, press the Home button on your remote control and select the Settings menu. Then select the Display & Sounds menu and change the Power On setting to Recent row. With this new setting, the TV will power up to the last input that was watched. Keep enjoying your new TV!

Wow what a great tv. Being a dummy when it comes to electronics and the ever changing technology that comes with it, I was torn between this Fire tv and a Roku.
I’m extremely happy that I chose the Fire tv. Toshiba really makes a nice tv. The picture is so sharp I couldn’t believe me eyes. I had to plug the old RCA tv in just to compare the two. Wow what a difference.
I have only had it for about a week now but it works perfect. I haven’t completely learned how to do all of the apps, free movies and free TV shows and all of that stuff yet. But I do know that I am “cutting the cable”.
I will have Internet service only and I will get all of my TV that way. Internet is only going to cost $50 a month for fiber optics. Plus I put up an old outdoor antenna outside. It’s really ugly and retro but I pick up around 60 free local channels with it. I may have to wait one day to watch my favorite shows on FX and AMC but I don’t have to pay $150 a month for A bunch of channels I don’t use.
Anyway, I really like this tv. Glad I bought it. If I could afford it I would buy one for the garage, bedroom, kitchen, the other bedroom, front porch and maybe a couple of closets.

Lets start off with this isn't your high end Sammy, LG or Sony TV. Lets also ignore that the box says this is an HDR TV (HDR spec is really lose allowing things to pass that are questionable at best). But, lets look at the price and what you get. First, picture quality on this is pretty good. I picked this TV up after my samsung 50" failed on me 10 months after buying it. I was intrigued by the inclusion of Alexa and the well built Fire TV aspect. I wasn't disappointed. Along with the good picture quality, the Smart aspect of the TV is very well laid out with tons of selection in content. You can even sideload other android TV applications with a simple bypass in the settings.
As for the HDR. This TV doesn't have the contrast ratio to support proper HDR display. I honestly cannot tell a difference on this display between HDR on and off. I have even verified that it is in fact on. This is due to the very low spec that TVs are allowed to pass off as HDR. I wouldn't consider this an HDR TV. That said, picture is still pretty good.
The only issue so far I have seen with this TV is what appears to be a weird artifacting with streaming videos. I haven't found the cause but I assume it may be caused by drop in bandwidth or the scalar being unable to keep up at certain times. Its rare and isn't a deal breaker for me.

So my 2.5 year old Sharp Aquos 4k Ultra HDTV (alledgedly 4k ultra) decided to kick the bucket. About 5 months after the 2 year warranty was up. After much research I ended up with this TV. I've only had it 4 days, but I'm in LOVE with this tv! Awesome picture, good sound right out of the tv until I can get the cable for my sound bar. I love the apps and features... the FIRE TV is amazing. I ended up getting the 30 day trial for Amazon prime tv. The Alexa feature is amazing. "Alexa, switch to blu ray." "Alexa, play Monday night football." LOVE IT. I honestly never realized with the Sharp TV that I don't think I was ever getting the full 4k UHD effect. This TV is FAR superior. Hope it's reliable and lasts.

Easy set up. Outstanding color. I purchased this Toshiba 55” for our bedroom. After setting it up in our living room, decided to put our old Samsung 55” in the bedroom. The Samsung still has excellent color and was top of the line in 2015, but not a Smart TV. Televisions have come a long way in three years. With our Samsung, we had to sit directly front of the tv to get a clear picture. The Toshiba on the other hand, has excellent color and clarity no matter where we sit in the room. If I had only know how much we would love it, I would have purchased a larger screen size.

We have Amazon devices including Fire TVs all around our house and we love it. We tried to get my mother in law to use it on her old TV but switching back and forth between HDMI ports was confusing to her so she didn't like it. However, when her old TV needed to be replaced, I read the reviews on this one.
The main issue people had with this TV is that when you turned it on, it would default to the Fire TV interface every time which might be a problem for some. Then I saw a response from Toshiba that stated the latest firmware allowed you to have the TV start on the last interface. What that means is the main complaint people had has been corrected through a software update.
Advanced users might not care, but for some, this is a huge change. I installed the TV for my mother in law, updated the software which happens by default, changed some settings and voila! I had it starting on HDMI 1, so her cable would come on just like before. She loved it and didn't initially care that it was also a Fire TV... or so I thought.
The last time I went over there, she was watching her cable, but had no problem going back and forth and using the FireTV portion on her own. As long as it started on HDMI 1, she wasn't intimidated and started using the additional capabilities.
As far as the picture is concerned, we are very happy with the quality for the price we paid. I bought a 43' LG 4k for our bedroom and I wish I bought this instead. It would have integrated into our home automation set up much easier.
For someone that uses Amazon home automation and fire TVs, this is a great option for the money. Amazon Fire TVs interface is much better than most smart TV's.

I liked this TV so well that I went back and bought a second one. It is easy to install and setup. The color is great and the sound is really good. The price was fantastic. I can use it to access Dish network any where option and can use all my Amazon Prime offerings for free! It has plenty of options to use such as youtube and other free viewing options. These are all easy to use as long as you have an internet connection. It was easy to connect wireless to the internet. If I can set it up and use it, then almost everyone could do it quickly!

I read a lot of reviews for different brands and window shopped for months before making my final decision. The last and only tv I have ever bought was about 12 years ago and it has never gone out on me. The picture is still amazing as well, this was an LG plasma tv, however I was in search for a bigger tv that wouldn’t break my bank and deliver my needs just the same. After being an Amazon Prime member for a year, I have really enjoyed all of its benefits to including Alexa and Fire Tv. For someone who becomes an Amazon Prime member, you mostly fall into the habit of shopping online. However, I had to see the Fire Tv for myself before making my final decision, despite the 50/50 positive and negative reviews on it. I paid BestBuy a visit and I was impressed by the television instantly! I have to say that it definitely stood out amongst the rest, and I’m not just saying that because it was displayed on its own surrounded by all its gadgets. Took it home that same day and I have to say, I am very pleased with how easy it was to install, set up and begin enjoying! The picture quality is amazing! The sound is unbelievably crispy clear, almost sounds like a surround sound is built into it. I would definitely recommend this tv to everyone looking to purchase a 55” and is an Amazon lover like I am.
