Unable to back up file - "not enough space"

After several attempts, I may have to return this drive as the included backup software simply doesn't work. Before purchasing this, just google: “Unable to back up files to My Passport because there is not enough space”. This is a massive issue. I cannot comment otherwise on performance as I am struggling to get this to work despite different backup plans and formats. It has a decent price, but you lose that advantage in 1) it not working and 2) the time spent getting it to work. I've opened a ticket with WD, but as I have not heard back, I will return this to BB I'm afraid.

I am not tech savvy and purchased this late in 2017 because it was advertised as easy to use. I installed it on my Dell desktop and it wouldn't perform a back up as I understood it would do. I have been in contact with WD support at least 5 times - probably more like 10+ times over the past many months. They take several days to reply with an answer that is hard to understand and so far this drive is still not up and running as I understand it should. They have escalated my situation to their senior staff but then the communications with them just seem to have died. I wish I could return it to Best Buy for a full refund but I am long past the 90 day return window given all the time I have spent with WD Customer Service. It has been close to a nightmare. I'll never buy another WD product again.

i went to buy extra storage for my nydia player.. and had asked one of the people working there thier opinion of the storage drive.. if it would work with my player. he said YES OVER AND OVER.. well got it home and it is sluggish, does not work at all with my player. am stuck with this over hundred dollar storage drive. not sure if i will buy fromBEST BUY again. have bought products there many many times... im tired of poor service. had bought one of the big nvidia player pros.. and had problems with it from the start.. well more problems happened then changed it out and received a used one.. nah.. no more best buy for me.. im highly disappointed with this last buy.. if i thought i could get my money back i would.. thank you terry lumpkins

Does not work with older MACBook Pro

I ordered this seeing it was both MAC and Windoes comparable but when I plugged it in it didn't work with my older IOS . I needed to update my computer. So I updated the system and then tried it again, and it needs time machine in order to back everything up. On the box it says it's as easy as plugging it in and backing up the computer but instead it has been making things even more difficult and my stuff still is not backed up. So I returned it and I'm looking into getting a Seagate like my other older back up that I I have filled up already because that one seems more straight forward to use.

    Failed after 3 weeks.

This product failed completely after only 3 weeks from purchase, so I'd give a Zero rating if I could. The hard drive was never dropped or damaged in any way. All I did was transfer files and it sat on a table for three weeks until I needed it again. The company does not stand by their product and will not offer data recovery despite this failing after only 3 weeks. If I want to get the data back, it will cost $900. After all the positive reviews, I thought I was getting the best product out there. Not so much.

Not a good backup drive for a Mac

I bought this large external drive to use for Time Machine backups. It was advertised on the box as being compatible with Mac. It contained initial software that prevented my Mac from seeing it. After working with two friends who know more than I do about these things, I returned it. If it does not work with Mac, it shouldn't say it does, and if it does work, there should be more specific instructions included (perhaps in writing in the box) about how to make it compatible. I've bought backup drives from Best Buy before and they have worked, but not this one.

Originally bought on 8.26.2017 to use for my ps4 as an external, worked solid for 3 1/2 months until a couple weeks ago. While playing online I was removed from the game because the game software couldn't be found/ external HDD was not supported. Drive was corrupted. External was always shut down properly and never had any issues prior. Purchased while on sale, and now dealing with WD with their warranty. So if you do purchase buy the Best Buy protection that way you can exchange in store faster.

Yup. I should have waited a week for the 8 TB POJ for about the same price. I suppose I will find out in the far future if it actually saved all the 3.5 terabytes I put on it. Yup. not even close to 4 terabytes. Not even 3.5 if you count their bloatware. This should be advertised not to use in any serious application that you expect use directly other than archival back up. Oh, and cross your fingers that your data will be there if you are using it for backup.

WD Backup Software doesn't work with this drive!!!

WD has an excellent reputation for reliability, so after some investigation, I purchased this hard drive. The WD Backup software did not work as advertised,. Subsequently, I contacted WD and spoke with several techs. None could resolve the issue and the "bottom line" was that the software did not work with this hard drive and I should use Windows 10 backup software. I think that this is absolutely unacceptable!!

    Could not format for Mac

The box said you have to reformat the drive to use with a Mac but the very sparse instructions did not help and all attempts resulted in "error." WD's support site had nothing useful. I returned the first drive and bought another in case it was a defective drive, but got the same result. Took that one back and bought the Seagate equivalent which works exactly as advertised. Very satisfied with the Seagate. Would not recommend the Western Digital.

I brought home the hard drive and I plugged it into my IMAC (that uses a special read/write plugin for NTFS). It took a while to mount. LMOST Every file that I tried to copy to the drive just crapped out at the end off the copy and left me very frustrated. Bottom line, is that I returned the unit and chalked it up to a case of a lemon. I already have almost 20 hard drives from both WD and Seagate and they work flawlessly, so this is confusing.

I should have known whe this hard drive arrived with a cable that I had trouble connecting I should have sent it back. Not wanting to deal with the hassle I kept it. Now not even two years in, it died on me and I had to pay $600 to recover all my data stored on it. I deeply regret purchasing this drive

I bought this for my daughter who has a Mac Book laptop & it said it would work for Mac's but it doesn't. It would not format she try everything, we thought it might be defective so I took it back & got another one & it did the same thing so I took it back also. We found a different brand on the Best Buy website that an employee at the store ordered for us & it worked great!

The configuring for Mac OS was very technical and required an apple senior advisor. Then all was fine for a month until an Apple operating system update. Since then, the backups will happen ONLY after a restart. Best Buy will not replace it, saying I need to send it to Western Digital for a $400-likely repair. I think NOT!

This product do not work well with Mac as it indicates it does. This is the second time I have purchased this back-up hard drive, and the second time it has stoped syncing with Time Machine. I had used WD products for many years without issue until now. This product is going back and I will be trying another brand.

had a WD b-4 never worked right ,bought another and it still has a dificult time backing up files, causes my computer to run very slow as it seems to be always running in the background. the support ,while pretty good, is very difficult to understand \, so communication is poor at best.

So after doing the steps to set this thing up, my mac recognizes it as a "read only" file, so I can't drag and drop folders into it. After googling for way longer than I wanted to, trying a bunch of extra steps and eventually having to download a free trial of a program, IT STILL DOESNT WORK.

USB 3.0 port not manufactured correctly. Tried 3 cables none of which would fit. Called Western Digital who refused to support the product even though their name and telephone number is on the warranty card. Useless piece of junk since you cannot connect iti to anything.

Drive failed within 60 days after purchase. Was using it as a primary backup and primary storage (in some instances); So, I lost a significant amount of data. Returned it and luckily BestBuy allowed me to do so despite it being past my 30-day return limit (as an elite member)

In the process of working on a resolution through Best Buy as this product was barely used yet would no longer transfer files (just kept showing that it was in process for hours if I let it be) and the drive test failed. Bummer!!
