Deprecated item but an alternative NAS

First off, this is a deprecated product because western digital no longer supports this hard drive. You can continue to use it for its intended purpose but this drive can also be jailbroken to run Linux and openmediavault like a NAS. Once that's installed, you can have docker containers running a server like Jellyfin to manage media. You can Google the following, "problem solved save my cloud home" and find the post on the western digital community. Check the attached photos as well.

I have 3 objectives with this purchase: 1. Store all my MP3's and then stream them to my phone via some 3rd party ap - full fail. It basically can't be done. 2. Use it as a cloud drive to store music projects so I could record from PC in the studio, then work on the file from else where via laptop (using the exact same programs) - full fail. I was able to get the PC side working but couldn't get the laptop side to even recognize the drive. Tried all suggestions. 3. Create folders that would allow me to share files with other musicians, granting them rights to download and upload in exchange. Essentially non-realtime music collaboration. I was able to achieve this from my side but wasn't able to test an upload from my counterpart because he lags. Unfortunately, this badboy is super difficult to get working properly, but worse, it died within two months. The hard drive stopped spinning, according to WD help site, and the unit is dead. Thankfully I have multiple backups and didn't go straight to the mycloud exclusively. My advice, don't buy it. If you do, have another physical hard drive that you use as a double backup...don't trust the MyCloud as your only source of data storage. Wish I'd just spend the money on an awesome USB stick.

Not bad but don’t bump it. There is a mechanical hard drive inside, not a solid-state so if you accidentally bump it you will damage it and lose all data.

Hard drive worked for about 4 months then the unit stopped working. Following the steps on WD’s website I was unable to restore the hard drive.

Worked fine for a while then it stopped working about 1 year after purchase. My advice is to stay away from Hard Drives with moving parts and instead purchase a good cloud plan. HD’s are a waste of good money. Most HD’s will fail - guranteed! Amazon, Google, Apple are good companies that have good cloud plans.

    Good, but not perfect, NAS

I am impressed with the amount of functionality I got for the cost, however, I feel that it is also missing some important functionality. Here's what I like: • It's very easy to set up - it just took a few minutes • The included software (that is compulsory) is decent and seems to work well syncing data across devices. This software will work on both macOS and Windows (I have used it on macOS High Sierra 10.13.5 and Windows 10) • I like that it will back up files from cloud services, such as Dropbox, Box, OneDrive, and Google Drive. • I like the included backup from mobile devices (iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android). Here's what I wish they would improve: • It appears that there's currently no way to back up the NAS, to a USB drive for instance. • While this does support both Samba (SMB, used primarily for Windows sharing) and AFP (Used primarily for Mac), this functionality is very limited, and you are unable to require authentication to access these shares. This means that anyone with access to your Network will have access to these shares. Therefore, if you want to use File Backup on Windows or Time Machine on Mac, you'll want to make sure that you encrypt your backups. This is more difficult to do in Windows than Mac (the option to encrypt the backup is given in the Mac, but Windows forces you to create a Virtual Hard Disk, encrypt it in BitLocker (which requires a Trusted Platform Module/TPM in your computer), and create a shortcut to this in your APPDATA Startup Items folder), This is in my opinion a major downside, because in Windows, if you are on a different network and restart your computer, Windows will give an error message when it tries to mount your virtual hard drive. If they had given authentication as an option, there'd be less need to do this. • There's no way to create additional AFP or Samba shares; you are stuck with the AFP share TimeMachineBackups and the Samba share "Public" and cannot create additional shares for additional usages. • I wish that it had additional services (that add functionality) that you could choose. • A Linux client of WD Discovery would have also been nice. • It appears that there's no way to replace/upgrade the hard drive easily in the 1 HDD unit. As long as you are OK with the limitations, this device is a really good value, since a competing system from a company like Synology starts at around the same cost, and doesn't include the hard drives. I had a coupon that made this less than the cost of a Synology. However, there are some significant limitations that I hope that Western Digital will address in the future.

Failed when I needed it to as Time Machine backup

Looked like it was working for Time Machine. Had to get my Mac wiped to fix a bug. Went to use Time Machine, and this hard drive would not mount. After hours both on the phone and working in store with Apple Care, the problem was the hard drive. Lost my backups (luckily had my files on iCloud. I bought it literally for this purpose and didn't need it for a couple of years, and then when I actually needed it, it didn't do its one job. Never buying Western Digital again.
