    Formatting for Mac or exfat

I deduct one star for lack of instructions--nothing written, no pdf on the drive. I’ll save you the research: here is what you need to do/know: Mine came formatted for Windows devices. If you first plug it into a mac, surprise! The default “install” icon does NOT set it up for use on a mac, it just installs some WD side programs. You must reformat it. This is easy to do -- 1. On macOS you must find “Disk Utility,” on the left side highlight the WD Passport drive, then Erase. You can choose to format it for mac OS only, or format it “exfat” to use it with both mac and windows. 2. There's only one "not so positive" thing about exFAT, and that's the lack of support for journaling. Journaling is a feature that allows the file system to keep records of changes made to files stored on it. That's useful when data corruption occurs because journals can be used to recover broken data. exFAT doesn't have this feature, and that means that data can be corrupted more easily when unexpected shutdowns occur or when the removable drive formatted this way is not safely ejected. (copied from https://www.digitalcitizen.life/what-is-exfat-why-useful/ ) Once it is formatted, you will love this small quiet drive!

I purchased as I need to back up my laptop now that I am working from home. It was simple to set up. Attach the cord and voila all ready. I did format to work with Apple an my PC. I downloaded the apps for security and was up and running in 10 minutes. It is quick and I did plug it into my Samsung tv to see how it played my HD movies. Worked flawlessly! I am happy with my purchase! I did purchase a longer cable for it as it was dangling from the tv. The customer service team was great and put it in my auto within five minutes of letting them know I was outside for curb service. They also price matched for me!

This Western Digital Hard Drive is fast and roomy. At 5TB there is lots of space for your largest files. You can save direct files or create an image of your hard drive. In either case, it will work will for backing up your important data. The price is good as will!

I love these little hard drives. Been getting them for years to use for backups for photos and videos. They are light, reliable (so far), and easy to store or move with. I like these mostly because of the WD name I trust (At least currently). Good little drives if you need something portable I would recommend.

Good capacity available among portable drives, and it’s one of the most affordable drives I considered with this much storage. It works well with Windows computers,

This drive works great for what it is. I recently upgraded from the WD Passport 4TB and this is not only 1TB more, but even a little thinner. It's not the fastest when it comes to transferring huge amounts of data but it's fast enough for occasional back-ups or file transfers. It's pretty light and easily able to fit into a backpack or laptop bag.

It is very easy to set up and to use. Comes loaded with its own installation software for both Mac and Windows users. Hold 5TBs of data. And the price at Best Buy was very reasonable.

    WD Passport 5TB portable drive

I purchased this as an upgrade for a 4TB version that was filling up with file transfers. I have found the 4TB versions to be reliable and fast and am expecting the same from this 5TB version. I have used them on gaming console for storage expansion and I carry one in my laptop back for very large files and backups. The drive is quiet even under read/write load and operates very fast when connected to USB 3 and works well on Usb 1/2 ports as well. It is also as vibration free as possible. When starting up you can barely feel the vibration when touching the drive and it certainly is not noticeable through your desk. The only visible indication that the drive is powered is a small LED which is bright enough to be useful but not so much that it is a distraction. To maintain the reliability, especially if this is a travel drive, I highly suggest getting a padded case to store it in. I have used both a padded case and the original packaging from the manufacturer for transport and both have protected the drive very well. This drive is a great purchase when it is on sale and not a bad purchase at regular price.

I like the WD My Passport portable storage. I have two of them now. My preference has been to keep files and photos in local storage devices as opposed to saving them online.

Having bought the 1tb version of this prior for games, and quickly running out of space, I had to upgrade. I thought I could get a better deal with Seagate so I sprung for one of their drives, but the write speed was so slow it was an immediate refund. So I came back to WD and got their 5tb drive for games and videos/photos. Works like a charm and I don't see myself hitting that 4.8/5tb limit anytime soon. Minor issue is that on booting up my laptop with this plugged it, it may not start up correctly, and I'd have to manually power down my laptop and unplug my drive to boot properly. In the included software, this could be fixed by disabling it from using the drive on startup, but it wasn't a huge enough issue considering how reliable this drive is.

What an improvement over the disk technology. This replaced a 1T disk backup. It took very little time to move the 1T to the 5T now I have plenty of storage and the backup program works again - much faster.

I've own several WD My Passport drives and have found them to be truly "plug and play", not only with my Windows laptop, but with my Macs as well. This drive is no exception. I was able to take a full backup of the data files on the Windows laptop, move the drive across to the Mac Mini, and access every single directory and file with no issue. Could not have been easier. I plan on ordering another similar drive to plug in to my wireless router as a network backup drive.

True WD reliability. I've been using this 5TB portable hard drive to back up all my files before upgrading my Windows 10 gaming desktop to Windows 11. The backup worked flawlessly. No issues. I'm pleased with this external hard drive.

I have been using this 5TB drive on my computer and have a 2TB one for my wife's computer. I use them as the primary storage for both computers as I bought new computers with the smallest solid-state drives, as there is no sense in spending the extra money on the computer when you can use these USB powered drives. They are flawless, silent, very dependable. I read the reviews saying they are junk, and die all the time, and all I can say is I think these people are likely trolls or chronic complainers. These are my first WD USB powered drives, but I had what was once considered large AC powered one for years. Never a problem with either.

The storage is very nice and transfer speeds are decent. It is pretty cheap as well. I always use WD My Passport and the only reason I need new ones is when I run out of space every few years, these have been very reliable for me in the past.
