I bought one out of curiosity really. I am an apple guy so I was waiting for the connected home stuff with apple...But Siri is not so great and Google as a search engine is amazing so I went with the Google Mini and wanted to be able to say "Google turn on my coffee pot while I was laying in bed...IT DOES JUST THAT! I want more of them (The WEMO switch and Google mini's) The set up for the switch took a second and really is fun! I wish the price was a little cheaper, I would buy a lot more of them. I bought the insignia plug and had to return it...Set up was confusing and I could never get it to work. I am some what savy with tech but could not figure it out. Go with the WEMO! AWESOME PRODUCT!

I’ve got 11 Wemo product scattered through the house. Most are the light switch model. I added this for an Instant Hot Water dispenser in the kitchen. I watch the electricity costs on the water heater and have it scheduled to come on only during times we would use the water heater. So I guess this would be considered typical use for this product. The construction is solid. Fit and finish is excellent. Setup was simple as was for all of the Wemo products I have. Packaging elegant. I can’t rave about the product enough. If I had one gripe, minor gripe, it would be size. It would be nice if it was a tad bit smaller. It is a bit bulky but not terribly. I still love it. Thx.

I bought this one for my brother for Christmas after he commented that it was pretty cool that I could control my lamp from hundreds of miles away. I've had one of these for a year or two now and really like having it. The timer feature is pretty nice, so I can set it up to turn on and off on a schedule or manually whenever I want with the app. It gets 4 instead of 5 stars for a few reasons. First I think the price should be coming down a bit more on this. It's been pretty much the same product for a few years now, so I'm sure it's cheaper to make. Second, I sometimes wouldn't be able to connect to the device from the app. It would show as not detected and I couldn't do anything with it. Usually pulling it from the wall and plugging back in would help. Sometimes my wife could see it but I couldn't or vice versa. Most of those kinks seem to have been worked out now with firmware and app updates. Overall a great product. I love these and the in-wall light switches.

      Hi Mike,

Thank you for providing a review on this product. We're glad to know that you are enjoying the features of this product. For the challenges that you are experiencing, force closing the app usually helps. If you have an Android handheld device, try to clear the data of the app (phone Settings > Application > WEMO app > Clear data/cache).

Should you need further assistance, we'd be happy to help you via email at [email protected]. In your message, indicate also your full name, phone number, location, and the link to this post.

Bought this Insight switch to go along with my WeMo bulbs and other regular WeMo switches. The integration with my other products was seamless and I really like the extra features this switch has to monitor power consumption. Wasn't sure it justified the few extra dollars when I left the store, but after using it, I really wish all my regular WeMo switches and bulbs had the same power consumption monitoring. One of my favorite features is knowing how long my Insight switch is on everyday and then it averages that time into my daily, weekly and monthly use. Love it! The Insight switch also works with my Echo. With my voice, I can turn all my WeMo switches on and off. Really love it!!!! I love that convenience. The Echo is so quick and the switches are so responsive. Before I can even physically get to the switch or my WeMo app, the switch is on or off. That is very convenient, especially when you are in bed, or if your hands are full, if you are already settled into your chair, or if the room is dark. I really love all my WeMo products and love that I have control of my products from anywhere in the world. My one issue with Belkin, and they immediately responded to me for help, was the initial set up. It's a little awkward connecting your WiFi but it's because of their instructions and timing. It's easy to get around, but I know they would get even better reviews if they changed their set up instructions. After the initial set up, adding new products and changing things or combining lighting in the app is easy. Belkin makes a great product that doesn't physically take space up on my WiFi router like other products do, their products are well built and responsive, and they are much easier to use as compared to Philips. Love my Philips lights, but the WeMo app is much more straightforward and user friendly. Along with my Echo, these connected home devices from WeMo are the future and I am just so amazed at all I can do that I couldn't do before.

I have 3 of the regular WeMo switches and love them! I decided to try this WeMo Insight switch to see what the difference is and I love it! It is super easy to install, you just need to have Wi-Fi and plug it into the wall outlet and then plug in your item (lamp, clock/radio, coffee pot, etc) and follow the instructions. (Download the app for your smartphone in the App Store or Google Play) It was super easy and now it is set to turn my lamp on at a certain time every day so I don't come home to a dark house. I love the Insight switch too because it also shows you how much energy the item is using as well as the monthly cost to run it. I would definitely recommend this and other WeMo products. I have not been disappointed.

I bought this to work with the Amazon Echo, and its worked well. Easy to set up, and very consistent. I had a previous Belkin WeMo switch, and just bought the light switch version, but the whole system seems to work well. I do like that you can track your energy usage, and gives some good stats. Very reliable when you turn it on and off, and seems to be the most compatible with other devices (internet of things). The only draw back is Belkin could use some help on making the app more user friendly and streamlined, but it's reliable and works.

This Smart switch is awesome. Last year I had it controlling my Christmas tree lights and another one to control the garland. Simple to set up. Name what it is controlling and control it from anywhere. Highly recommend this to anyone who wants a smart timer. It can turn on when the sun sets and turn off when the sun rises. It’s awesome! Forget about the old style timers, I hated those. They were kind of complicated to set up if you didn’t know what you were doing. But this takes the crown for timers.

Device is not bulky and very easy to setup. I use this to turn on and off small heater in the living room area using simple app. It has timer setup as well. You can create your own rule to turn it on or off at specific time of the day. Another good thing about this switch as opposed to the outlet switch is that you can use it without the app. You can just press the switch its kinda of touch switch and never have to care that it is a WeMo switch if you want. It works with Amazon echo as well, I haven't tried that yet but will sooner or later do that too. App is little lousy sometimes it loses the device if swtiched off remotely and will never detect until and unless you manully switch on wemo. Overall its a fantastic product for daily use and works pretty well.

    Privacy & Reliability Issues

    |

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I really want to say this is a great product, but I have some issues that prevent that. I am using about a dozen WEMO devices. One to periodically power cycle a Tablo, one to cycle network equipment, and the remainder to monitor and manage power in a crypto mine. I have been using WEMO for over a year. For context, I made my living designing computers and electronics, as well as developing firmware for these sorts of things, so I am not without a clue in using these devices. The Good: On the plus side, it is really handy to have the ability to restart equipment from anywhere, and the power monitoring is valuable as well. The monthly summary is very helpful. WHEN IT ALL WORKS. On the down side - Privacy Issues: Belkin's WEMO smartphone app is very intrusive, and I have to suspect that Belkin may be selling user data to data mining companies. The app has access to your contact info, cell phone number, and just about anything else to do with your phone. I see no reason for this access given what the app does. There is no functionality which relates to contacts, and the phone has a UUID for unique identification, so there is no reason for them to access your phone number. Far too many app providers feel free to steal your personal info, and we all need to stand up against it. I have solved it in this case by running the WEMO app from an iPod which has no phone number, and contains no contact info, but this sort of extreme measure should not be necessary in order to maintain control of private personal information. Reliability Problems: The wi-fi connectivity of this device drops all too often. I have even gone to the trouble of placing an additional access point in the vicinity of the WEMO devices, so it isn't a problem of signal strength. From time to time devices also seem to turn off for no apparent reason, although this hasn't happened enough for me to troubleshoot. It may be related to the poor decision by Belkin to use a touch sensor instead of a mechanical switch for manual power control. The touch sensor is an absolute nuisance, and has resulted in more than one inadvertent switching event. As in most engineering, simpler is better. I also find that the device setup process can be quirky, and (the annoyingly frequent) firmware upgrades break things more often than not, requiring that the device be set back up. The firmware updates sometimes require multiple upgrade attempts. Security: In February of last year it became public knowledge that the WEMO devices had serious security flaws. To be fair, Belkin came out with firmware to address the problem, but the nature of the mistakes in the original implementation were so fundamental as to shake my confidence in the development process at Belkin. It would seem that someone at Belkin has a lackadaisical approach to securing a device that has the potential to burn your house down if compromised. So why do I use these devices given the negatives, and the fact that I could roll my own solution with an Arduino, RasPi, or Beaglebone? That's easy. I'm lazy, and they are usable, just annoying. If you're okay with that (as I am) have fun!

Used it to control my lights at home and to view my pets when im away by turning on the lights near the internet wifi camera. The device connects to my wifi internet so the initial install is very important that you are able to connect the device properly. Don't upgrade the device software until you are sure the device can be controlled by your smartphone. The app will ask you to update the firmware before you are even able to test the device and settings. There is only one socket so it would be expensive if you have many appliance or lights to automate. The documentation is limited via app so it is important to check their website for more info. if you want to fully use the device connectivity to other apps and email support took a week for a response so do your own research via the internet and be patient.

Got this to control our lights from any smartphone while away and it works perfect for our application. The initial set up to connect to our wi-fi router seems tricky because it needs a firm wear update after the install, wish it was already updated before we got the device but after a few tries it was able to connect to our wi-fi router. When you have pets or baby inside the house that you want to monitor even at night, you can program it to light up at a certain time and can notify you if someone power up your lights manually because it detects any activity on the power switch. Combined this device with a wifi camera and you got yourself a security system that won't break your budget.

I like insight switches. I currently have 3 with plans to buy more. They allow you to work with your existing bulbs in lamps, or with stuff other than lamps. They provide energy usage information in the app which can be interesting, especially if you have one with a CFL or LED bulb and another with a traditional incandescent bulb. You can see a huge difference in energy usage. You could do the same thing with other things that use much more energy. Wemo devices work pretty good with IFTTT to set custom rules that aren't in the app. Downside to Wemo is their app and cloud service (both required.) They have a ways to go on the quality front of the app and cloud service. You have to accept that you will occasionally have issues that require you to reset the device or redo the rules. Having said that, I really like the wemo devices and have many of them and am confident that Belkin will improve quality over time as the IoT market matures.

I’ve been using WeMo outlets and switches for a few years now. Overall, they are useful and reliable. I use them to control various electronic devices that require an occasional power cycle. I have one controlling my block heater on my Kubota, so I can turn it on from my house a hour or two before I need to use it on a cold and snowy day. They are handy, My two complaints are my reason for withholding one star and depending on your circumstances this could either be a five star or one star review as a result of these issues. 1. The WeMo system only allows you to use one SSID with a user account. This means that if you have more than one WiFi SSID name in your home or if you have more than one home and they have different SSIDs, you can not remotely control WeMo devices on different SSISs from a single account. As IoT systems gained in popularity and maturity, many companies realized they needed to have the concept of “locations” as part of their underlying data model and in their software. So for example, I can pull up my thermostat app and see my home and vacation home then control thermostats in each home as logical groups. I had to buy a different brand of smart outlet to use on my other SSID or use a different account to remotely control WeMo devices on different SSIDs. 2. Firmware updates seem to often (if not always) leave the device in the off state after the update. I have experience some updates that required me to physically power on the device after the update. I couldn’t do it remotely or even locally through the app. I don’t know the exact circumstances, but I have experienced this enough to teach me to delay all firmware updates until I am able to physically touch the device, if needed, to bring it back online. Clearly not good for “remote control” situations. So I let those sit until I can be there. On my wishlist, is the ability to ask the WeMo to cycle the power off and on with some defined delay without having a network connection...and that last part is the catch. I can do a lot of things when I have connectivity between the WeMo and “the cloud”, but if you need to power cycle your only network device, once it is off, it is off until you can touch it, I work around this by having both DSL and Cable connections. I control one side from the other, so as long as one or the other is alive, I can bounce the nonresonsive side. Of course, this leads me to my 1st issue about SSIDs! I can only use WeMo for one side. Now that I have two other brands installed, I plan to gain experience with them to see if I could eventually get to a single vendor solution for all of my SSIDs.

This concept is awesome, product quality is great, does what it's suppose to do, but ONLY when the software (App) wants it to work. I has been over a year now since this product was release, and Belkin still hasn't update "Fully" their App. It's very slow, very buggy, totally unreliable and just simply doesn't work. There are other Apps in the market that does better job than Belkin, but that's unacceptable coming from such a big company as Belkin. Please Belkin, update the App once for all, we've been waiting a for worthy Update release, NOT those little incremental/small little buggy update. Your consumers will truly appreciate it and buy more of your WeMo products. Thanks.

You have to go through the setup slowly. The device is going to do what it is supposed to do, but if you think it is going to get online as fast as your tablet your in for a frustrating install. Slow down follow the steps and it is a really cool piece of technology. I do not like the apps ability to review and store my Contacts on my phone. I have three working like a world champ, and the control remotely from my phone is a huge convenience, I will never like the access to my Contacts. Living with it for now.
