The center channel went out on my old AVR from 1996 and I wanted a basic surround sound system. Though I have never owned one, I've always trusted the Yamaha brand and was not disappointed. It turns out the Cinema DSP sound field effects, something I thought was going to be "gimmicky," is a game changer!
The Owner's Manual stinks, but the YPAO microphone makes optimizing the soundfield a snap.
If you are looking for a budget/basic surround system for a small to medium sized space, the RX-V385 is for you.

Purchased the Yamaha receiver to replace a broken 20 year old Pioneer. New unit was easy to install and works great. Still learning about some of the settings, but it is working great for cable, blu-ray, dvd recorder, and radio. My old pioneer did not have HDMI so I was able to eliminate a lot of cables and make it easier to switch devices. Yamaha receiver is well made and provides great surround sound. Well worth the money

I am using this RX385 to drive a pair of JBL ND310s
1st of all, this unit sounds really amazing with the 310's w/out a sub.
I just wish i had a little bigger room to setup the surround & maximize all of the 5.1 features this unit has to offer. My TV does not support e/arc which just limits me to using the optical.
Having said that now, great powerful unit that suits my needs just perfect.

I have to say up front I am retired and so do not have unlimited means, so price was a major consideration when I bought this unit. Bang for the buck it excels. I grew up in the sixties and seventies. A unit like this would have cost well over a thousand dollars back then, and half the features

Great unit for the money, sounds great, and has some great features. Have it paired with my Roku 61” and my full Polk audio Theater system, would highly recommend it.

Got this because I needed a new receiver with HDMI. This does 4k 60hz. The main reason I got it is for my new PS5 coming in a few days. The PS5 can actually do 4k 120hz, or 8K, but since my TV is only 4k60, this receiver was totally fine.
Anyways, it has been great. High quality build, lots of setting, sounds great, volume shows on TV screen (small in the corner).
I am currently using the setting called 5.1 Stereo, which forces the left and right channels to play out of the surround speakers as well. If you have it on normal surround setting, only the front speakers will play until you play something with actual surround mixing. YouTube for example does not support this, so I generally just keep it on the 5.1 Stereo setting unless I'm watching a BluRay or playing a video game that has been mixed for surround.
It took about 20 minutes to set up.
Have had 0 problems and def recommend, especially for the killer price.

This is my fourth Yamaha receiver. I've been updating them for about 15 years. This one is the best so far for a 5.1 configuration. The setup and configuration is so much better than in the past. I looked at the more expensive models but this was all I needed so why spend more money. This was a great buy. Thanks Best Buy.

My Denon for my TV sound system died after 10 years and it was time to get a new receiver. I only needed a 5.1 system and this Yamaha fit the bill very nicely. Inputs for my DirecTV, Apple TV, and Blue Ray. Easy to rename all the input sources to match those names. Slight difficulty in establishing sound options by source type but after an hour of plunking around figured out how to do it. Nice unit pushing clean sound. WiFi available but haven't used it yet. It's a keeper.

I'm picky on what I buy. I buy by brands then model #s. My last receiver was Yamaha - so I wanted to stick with Yamaha. I wasn't impressed with the new design with the "giant" nobs in middle w small display screen. Seeing the last model #, I started my investigation. Reading "reviews" on this model from different review websites. Then reviewed the model back another step, I didn't like it. I came back to this model #. I then decided this Yamaha was want I wanted to buy. Easy hook up of all my different gadgets. The display was larger than my last model that broke. The display is a bold white led display - which I love. Even my family said the display was much easier to read - to see. The sound is awesome. Great definition. Sound quality. Crystal clear. I also use only Yamaha maha speakers. Satellite & Yamaha tower speakers with all different speakers built in. I'll never get rid of my Yamaha towers. The sound from them is better now from my older Yamaha receiver. I Love this Yamaha receiver. I'm so happy i drove to another Best Buy to purchase this receiver. A Great Receiver....a Best Buy Elite member..

No bells and whistles, but straight power! Bought this for my son’s house at college. It pushes the speakers to their limits with clean, booming power! Low cost, how output!

I've been a fan of Yamaha for many years, guitars, keyboards, electronics... This amp is no exception. It's simple, user friendly, and the bass tones coming through my sub are full and deep! It has plenty of inputs as well. I would ask for a couple more old school RCA inputs if there was anything I can think of that I would want to change, I still use cassette decks, and a feed from my computer that is analog. But I was able to connect everything I wanted, but I have used all the analog inputs.

Product has fabulous sound. One quirky thing with my setup is that I cannot get my cable tv to play when hitting the TV quick button on the remote. I have everything set up correctly, but I have to use the HDMI 2 input. The TV button play nothing. All the other lighting/quick buttons work properly. But I am keeping the unit because the sound is excellent for the value.
