    Synopsis

    Robin Hood
Robin Hood is one of the first animated films produced by the Walt Disney Company after Walt Disney's death in 1967. For the film, the studio's animators took the Disney tradition of adding human-like animal sidekicks to established tales (Cinderella, Pinnochio) a step further by making Robin Hood's legendary characters creatures themselves. Robin Hood (Brian Bedford) is a wily fox; Maid Marian (Monica Evans) is a beautiful vixen; Little John (Phil Harris) is a burly bear; Friar Tuck (Andy Devine) is a soft-spoken badger; the Sheriff of Nottingham (Pat Buttram) is a greedy wolf; and the scheming Prince John (Peter Ustinov) is a sniveling, groveling, thumb-sucking undersized lion with a serpent sidekick named Sir Hiss (Terry Thomas). The film begins after Prince John and Sir Hiss have tricked the true King into leaving the country on a phony crusade. With the help of the Sheriff of Nottingham, they tax the life out of Nottingham's peasants, leaving them all penniless but with the courageous Robin Hood as their only hope. ~ Aubry Anne D'Arminio, Rovi

Disney's Robin Hood has a rare universal accessibility, still able to charm new viewers while time and time again reinvigorating the enthusiasm of those who hold the film as an old favorite. What it may lack in historical significance among the pantheon of animated classics Robin Hood makes up for in pure charm, through its lovable characters, irresistible songs, and warmly familiar adventure. This Blu-ray release is at times disappointing, its video neither fully reproducing a tangible, textured piece of artwork nor possessing the kind of perfectly sharp line work and smooth veneer of modern animation. Instead, the screen can take on a forced, smeared appearance; grain and imperfections are removed, but sometimes at the cost of robbing detail from the edges of the film's scratchy artistic styling. While undoubtedly the result of hard work from talented individuals, this visual presentation is not quite ideal. Nonetheless, such a fine movie in a respectable presentation deserves an easy recommendation!

I am not going to review the plot or aspects of the actual film as you can go to much better places for that online. You are wondering if its worth buying this edition, no? If you are starting a new Disney collection where you must have BluRay then this is certainly for you. Or if you are like me and think that the added bit of cost to future-proof your collection is worth buying the BR+DVD combo, then this is for you. However, if you could care less on which version you buy, then I would suggest just getting the DVD or finding an older DVD edition online that would save you money. There is not a whole lot of new extras or greatly enhanced film quality of this editions compared to other DVD quality ones.

Errol Who?! Kevin what now?! THIS is the story of Robin Hood. To heck with Lion King and Phhhh to Frozen. This is the golden age of Disney when the House of Mouse could get top named actors in their films and looked to classic literature for their inspiration. In this case they used furry animals to do it which made the film even MORE fun! I doubt Frozen would have worked with the leads being Polar Bears in todays society...... Get this film. Sit down with your children. Show them how we entertained ourselves WITHOUT smart phones......ooo de lah lee!!!

The value of the package is excellent. It's a great bluray transfer, and the addition of digital copy and DVD is icing on the cake. This just leaves the movie....which is, admittedly, a mixed bag. No, it is not one of Disney's best. Yes, they do reuse animation cells from previous movies, which gives the production a bit of a cheap feeling. However, for young children or nostalgic viewers, these issues are easily overlooked or ignored. I personally enjoy the film enough and find there is more than enough here to warrant the $9 asking price.

This film was done of course, in what I would call ‘Disney’s Off Years”. Not up to their usual standards, was not a huge hit. Could have been if improvements in script & characters. It is only a good film. Bringing Phil Harris as “Little John” & making “Little John” a bear just because of the success with 1967’s ‘The Jungle Book” “Baloo” character. ONLY a 1 disc version of the film. Some extras but nothing major. No Making Of or anything like that. NOTHING special like information on film inside. And, something I HATE in DVD packaging. THESE HORRIBLE CASES WITH THE LITTLE OPEN UP FLAPS!! THESE NEED TO BE DONE AWAY WITH!!

Back in the day when Disney hand drew the animation and didn't churn out 10 movies a year including direct to video sequels (where's the quality control these days), they would do an animated movie every few years. I assume that's because it was much more of an undertaking then than it is now. This one slips under the radar when it comes to Disney Classics, but my kids enjoy it and I have to admit, the nostalgia factor is pretty high on this one. Must have watched it 100 times growing up (wore out the old VCR copy).

Robin Hood is the first Dismey film released after Walt Disney's death. So any issues one might have with the films story can attributed to the fact that they had to learn to make movies without Walt for the first time. Once that is understood the film is marvelous fun and a great introduction to the classic tale of Robin Hood. The Blu-Ray transfer can look very sketchy at times, but so does the animation. Special features also are not as plentiful as other Disney releases either. But overall definitely worth owning if this is one that you want in your collection.

While not the pinacle of animation for the time, Robin Hood is a fun adventure that is sure to be remembered. Disney animation of this era is fascinating, though this disc is a bit lacking in bonus features, which is a shame. There are a couple of deleted storyboards and some sing along songs, though it might have been nice to have interviews with teh animators. The movie itself is wonderful and at a good price for Dvd/Bluray/Digital copy. You'll absolutely have fun with Robin Hood.
