Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), a Philadelphia boxer, is but one step removed from total bum-hood. A once promising pugilist, Rocky is now taking nickel-and-dime bouts and running strongarm errands for local loan sharks to survive. Even his supportive trainer Mickey (Burgess Meredith) has given up on Rocky. All this changes thanks to Muhammad Ali-like super-boxer Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). With the bicentennial celebration coming up, Creed must find a "Cinderella" opponent for the big July 4th bout -- some unknown whom Creed can "glorify" for a few minutes before knocking him cold. Rocky Balboa was not the only "Cinderella" involved here: Writer/director Sylvester Stallone, himself a virtual unknown, managed to sell his Rocky script (one of many that he'd written over the years) on the proviso that he be given the starring role. Since the film was to be made on a shoestring and marketed on a low-level basis, the risk factor to United Artists was small. For Stallone, this was a make-or-break opportunity -- just like Rocky's million-to-one shot with Apollo Creed. Costing under a million dollars, Rocky managed to register with audiences everywhere, earning back 60 times its cost. The film won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Rocky, the perennial underdog classic, finally got the glory with this terrific DVD release from Sony/MGM. The PQ/AQ isn't great, as such since this was a film from 1976 which film stock was mostly cheap, grain stock and only epic films released in 70mm had 6channel audio, but for what its worth, the grain helps the film with the whole Philly street vibe Stallone and Avildsen strove for. The mono sound is good but the included 5.1 Dolby and DTS remasters aid with the boxing scenes and Bill Conti's classic score tremendously with good spacing and decent bass. The extras are also top notch with 4 commentaries, tons of documentaries and featurettes, 8mm boxing footage and more finally grace a well-deserved classic in need of care.

    A TRUE CLASSIC

The Italian Stalion, AKA Rocky Balboa, is a nobody at this point in the franchise. Just an ameture boxer who has not so good luck, until Heavywheight Champion, Apollo Creed sees his stats in the local papers, and wants to give an "unknown" an opportunity in the ring. You also get to see how Rocky meets his future wife, Adrien, who at this time, is a shy petshop employee who has low self esteme. A great movie for anyone and an inspiration for those who believe they're not good enough. Bonus features are also good, You get trailers, making of, and commentary from Stallone and Shire. "Yo, Adriene, I did it!"

How Best Picture winners receive less than exemplary blu ray releases is beyond me. Yet, once again, the folks associated with MGM have seen fit to right any wrongs. Rocky is the perennial underdog story. The behind the scenes special features remind the viewer of how much heart and soul went into the creation of this classic. There are still a relative few who find fault in the new remaster but I don't see it. And at this price point for a catalog release, it begs addition to anyone's film library. "Get up you son of a ^%$#@ cause Mickey loves ya!"

Ok it's Rocky so if your over 25 and you've never seen Rocky then stand up and slap yourself in the face because you deserve it. This dvd is ok but for $19.99 you can get every Rocky movie on bluray with better extras, even the awful mess that is Rocky 5 (my goodness Rocky 5). So if you want to go really cheap you can't go wrong this (won a best picture Oscar for a reason buddy) but if you really have the Eye of the Tiger then go the full 12 rounds and get the Blu Ray set for a few bucks more.

Casual movie buffs and Rocky fans rejoice! If you haven't owned the movie or the entire Rocky Collection, this is yours to start. Now there were complaints of BluRay transfers for the film, but this recent 40th edition may appease consumers, providing rich 1:78 picture and excellent soundtrack from the violent punches in the ring to Bill Conti's iconic music. This copy comes included with a brief featurette of Creed and a UV Digital Copy for redemption.

What makes ‘Rocky’ such a resounding success is its heart, technical innovation and Stallone himself, who not only provides an Oscar nominated script but an Oscar nominated performance as endearing, down-and-out southpaw, Rocky Balboa. Filled with iconic and pop-culture defining moments, ‘Rocky’ is one of the greatest sports movies of all time.

I like the film "Rocky". Not my choice for Best Picture of 1976. That should've been "Network". But it's a very good, heart-warming film nonetheless. As for this blu-ray disc, it is superb. Several interior scenes that appear too dark in previous formats are clearer and less grainy. The surround sound is brilliant, especially Bill Conti's memorable music score. And the many extras are worth watching. Especially the tribute to Burgess Meredith.

The blue ray digital transfer for this release is so much cleaner than the blue ray copy of Rocky that was released prior. I bought last year the entire series on blue ray. The quality for the first two films were so bad that my old VHS tapes were considered better. This version is beautiful. PLUS the extra footage for the making of the film is a must for Sylvester Stallone fans, This is a must buy.
