Roku Channel shows hundreds of free movies

      Posted
      modalsystem

I have used Roku for years, including several different models. The best new thing of note is Roku has recently released The Roku Channel, which has hundreds of free movies. It is ad supported.Roku has just about every app you can think of(YouTube/Pandora/Netflix/Amazon/Hulu/HBO Now) plus tons of more apps in many different categories. Here are some points to consider when deciding on which model of Roku to buy: 1)If you need to connect by WiFi in a room far away from your WiFi router,I would recommend the Roku Streaming Stick PLUS or Roku Ultra. 2)If you have a 4K TV,I would recommend the Roku Ultra or Roku Streaming Stick PLUS. 3)To search for content using your voice,go with either the Streaming Stick,Streaming Stick PLUS or Ultra. 4)If you want a wired ethernet connection,go with the Roku Ultra. 5)If you want to connect to an old TV with RCA/Composite audio/video jacks, you will need the Express PLUS 6)The Express models have a remote where it has to be pointed at the device, unlike the other Roku models. 7)If you are only going to buy one Roku device,I would recommend the Roku Ultra. The Ultra has many unique features that the other Roku models don't such as: -Gaming buttons to play video games -Remote finder to find a lost remote control -Ethernet port for a wired connection -Micro SD card slot -USB Port -Night listening mode (this lowers the volume of loud, explosive sounds and raises the volume of soft sounds like whispers.Very useful!) -Headphone jack on the remote for listening without disturbing others

I bought the + stick because my TV is in a large cabinet and the + stick has 4 times the wireless strength. Setup was easy, though I wasn't pleased with being required to add a payment method during account setup on Roku website. I set up the payment method (Paypal) and PIN (to prevent purchases that I don't authorize). I then logged in later and chose "change payment method"--didn't fill anything out but found in really small letters at the bottom of the screen "Delete payment method". I clicked on that and now there are no payment methods on file. I have Directv and for most of the Roku apps that are TV related, when opening them and going to settings, they automatically figured out that I have Directv and they activated themselves. For a few, I had to go to the website listed and enter an activation number from the TV screen. I don't like applications using up data when not in use. I've read that if you go back to the home screen when you're finished watching for the evening that data won't be used. I don't trust it so when I'm finished I unplug both the stick and the power cord. If you have a newer wireless router, your router has a 2.4 GHz frequency and a 5GHz frequency. Use the 5GHz frequency since it is much faster--even though the 5GHz frequency has less range, the + stick has extended range so it should work fine (and give you much faster speeds with the Roku). So far very pleased with the vast amount of free channels that are available. I'm still looking online for new channels, and they seem to be endless.

Best streaming device for the price. 4K HDR at 60 Fps. Streams extremely fast over wifi and I thought I would have to purchase the ultra for an ethernet but the dual band mimo advance wireless is superior. Got it with 30 days of sling TV for free and it also made sling TV look not bad for live TV when the other devices made sling look like crap. This made it look great. I can't even imagine how good it looks with live streaming TV with YouTube TV live, Hulu Live, and PS VUE. Direct TV now had great had great quality at 60 fps but when switching channels you would have to wait about 5 seconds... As for sling you don't but I can't compare it for the others. Don't waste your money on anything else lower than the streaming stick plus (+) and don't confuse it with the regular stick. The express plus or anything other than this is a waste of money. This gives you everything you need... Unless you want to listen to TV with headphones, unnecessary ethernet plug in since the wireless technology build in is superior, something Xbox and ps4 should learn from. A micro USB slot which is unnecessary imo. So if your in for the best bang for your buck grab this streaming stick Plus. 4K at 60 GPS True HDR superior wifi If you used any previous roku products I'd understand why you would hesitate because I did at first as well. Trust me on this and the Plus is like a completely whole new product its a completely whole new tier of the Roku line. Good job!

Have this attached to a 49" 4K Samsung. Plays standard definition to 1080P movies I have stored on a NAS over wireless. Picture quality is good. Sound is good. Runs off of USB power from t.v. Had no problems streaming from a MIMO wireless AC setup. 4K and HDR. Can move icons and add/remove them. Can change background. Same as the boxed versions, but smaller and without the outputs and Ethernet port. Remote can control my t.v.s on/off and volume. Recommend setting up a Roku account online prior to using. Will make entering data easier, otherwise you'll end up using the remote. You don't have to enter credit card information to set it up either, but you'll have to look at the bottom of the website to skip that part. Does not play the subtitles on movies I have on my server... whether remuxed in the file, or SRT and SUB/IDX files. Does not play alternate audio streams embedded either. My computer, XBox 1S and all of my very old WD media boxes can run subs and change audio streams. USB cable is a bit thick/short, but it doesn't weigh against the HDMI port. Hate having to register just to use it. It may be for streaming services, but it shouldn't be a requirement for basic functionality. Bought one for my guest bedroom and one for the parents as a gift to replace an older WD media player (and get rid of the clutter under the t.v.).

The unit works well and does everything it should in a small profile unit. It works perfectly well and does everything it should. There were a few surprises though such as you need to connect this to a long cord with a mini usb port on the end that plugs into the flash drive on one end and ac power on the other. I believe this acts as the antenna for the unit. I expected this to just be like a flash drive and not require any other cables. I didnt especially like this, but I can say it is at the farthest corner of the house and it picks up my router without any signal issues. I also originally bought the unit to work with my main TV and surround system and realized after purchase that since I use a logitech harmony remote the unit doesn't work with that all in one remote. So instead of returning it, I moved the unit to another tv in a bedroom and bought the Roku Ulitmate for the main Tv in family room. The Ultimate does work with the Harmony remote but some features need to be manually added to the remote to make it fully functional. Just be aware that the streaming stick+ does not work with Harmony remote. You will have to use the Roku remote to control the Roku box. Since the ROku remote has voice control you may want to use the Roku remote anyway. If you just want a great Roku device and will use the Roku remote to run it then you will be very satisfied with this unit. It is compatible with Direct TV Now also.

First time Roku user. This stick is currently on an old Samsung 19” LED TV 720p. It is powered through the TV’s USB port. Note: We have AT&T Fiber. User interface is pretty straight-forward. I like that you can rearrange your channels/apps in any order you like. Setup was simple. The only tedious part was setting up streaming channels individually with our DISH account (Food Network, HGTV, etc). Once everything was setup, we were able to watch on-demand and streaming easily. The remote can be paired with TV to power on/off and adjust volume; it cannot switch between TV inputs, though. As far as quality, on-demand stuff streams at a crisp 720p on the 720p TV (receives 1080p signal from Roku and scales down to 720p). As far as live TV, streaming is seamless for the most part. I rarely get true HD, but it doesn’t look like a potato, either. This all depends on internet connection and processing power of the Roku device. This device does not seem to overheat like my original Chromecast. Overall, I’m quite happy with our Roku experience so far. We wanted something for our guests to have in their bedroom entertainment wise, and this device fits the bill. We will strongly consider getting this device for our bedroom when we get a TV for it. It beats having to pay $7-10/month for extra cable/dish boxes.

This is my 3rd ROKU device, my main one is the ROKU Ultra, which I purchased for it's best Wi-Fi performance, picture and sound quality. This Streaming Stick + has the same Wi-Fi performance as the Ultra, with the best available speeds using the ac standards. It, like all ROKU's is really easy to set up and use, it couldn't be any easier to use, and it's available suite of apps is wide and deep. I feel it's performance is the equal to the Ultra, and with fast Wi-Fi, it's performance is as good as it gets. The really sweet thing about this little stick is it's not another box, but hides behind the diaplay, plugging directly into it's HDMI slot, even getting power from the USB port, if so equipped. We recently took it with us on a short trip to the Coast, and ROKU has made it so easy to set up, even on the Hotel's Wi-Fi, with it's extra passwords, ROKU thought of everything. We were able to watch Amazon Prime, Netflix just like at home, albeit with the caveat of the hotel's Wi-Fi connection, which was less than stellar, so a bit of buffering was experienced there. At home, the images and sound are superior to the Xfinity X1 cable box, when using the best quality apps, like Netflix, Amazon, etc. A solid recommendation!!!

Purchased for the primary reason of having not to pay my Internet Provider for additional boxes. Set-up could not be easier. I used the AC power supply instead of the USB for improved power. There is a difference although minor. Picture quality is phenomenal and greatly exceeded expectations. Comcast has a Roku App for existing customers and it works great. Some functions such as setting up recordings on the DVR or deleting recordings are unavailable but that would be a nit pick. I would like a remote that is a bit more robust in size and buttons visible in the dark. Voice command works perfectly. After (3)three days I purchased a second unit for my wife's office to replace the Apple TV that was very cumbersome. She loves the one remote, one button for on/off and easy user interface. Compared to Chromecast I find this product superior for its simplicity of use. So impressed I purchased a third ROKU as a gift for a family member. Hoping for an upgraded remote as stated above but certainly not a game changer. I would recommend this highly to anyone looking for smart TV features on non smart TVs. Tons of available apps and it's great to hit one button to get to Netflix, Prime, Sling, and others.
