Synopsis

Run Lola Run
Tom Tykwer directed this German thriller in which Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu) handled a smuggling job, delivered the loot, collected the payment, left the bag on the subway, and now has 20 minutes to gather 100,000 deutsche marks or confront the wrath of his boss, local criminal Ronnie (Heino Ferch). Desperate, Manni phones his girlfriend Lola (Franka Potente) who immediately runs downstairs and through Berlin streets to the bank run by her father (Herbert Knaup). However, she's rejected and leaves minus money. When she goes to meet Manni, he's holding up a supermarket, and she's shot by the cops. In a destiny device familiar to readers of Ken Grimwood's acclaimed novel Replay, the story begins anew with different outcomes. In one version, Lola robs the bank and takes her father hostage; in another, there's casino cash to be won. All Lola-Manni scenes were in 35mm, while scenes without them were shot in video. Other cinematic techniques on display here include whip pans, jump cuts, slow and fast motion, split-screen, intercut color and black and white, segment titles, and animation. Shown at 1998 film fests (Venice, Montreal, Toronto). ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

I bought Run Lola Run on BluRay to replace my DVD version. This is an interesting movie with some very clever direction. The story presents a situation - then jumps through three causality scenarios where the possible outcomes are changed by a different alignment in the chain of events. I also thought it was pretty smart that the director also lets you see some of the causality for people that Lola may encounter on the street (rapid flash forward with still photographs). This is a lower budget German made film (English dub is on the soundtrack or use the native language and English subtitles for a better experience, especially on the 2nd viewing). This is a good flick to have in the library if you're a film collector.

I had previous copies of this movie, in both VHS and DVD formats, and the Blu-ray version is great to see. This movie really brought the German film industry into prominence. The plot is simple to follow. The only downside is that the dialog in German can be hard to follow. The actors speak quickly and often quite softly. The subtitles in English, in my opinion, don't always match the German; there are a few f-bombs in English that aren't in the German dialog. This was created for the MTV generation, but it's a fun and satisfying 90 minutes of film.

This is a live action pre-remake of the original featuring all of the same cast. The action sequences have real motion and the music has authentic audible sound with notes and tempo. Warning: Spoilers: When the protagonist overcomes the principle dilemma the story actually concludes with a resolution which is more than I can say for other narratives where this does not happen. It's not as good as that other movie, but it's better than that other other movie that wasn't as good.

This movie is awesome! Not only would I say that this is the best German language film, but I would even go so far as to say that this is the best foreign film, period. Director Tom Tykwer was a pioneer at this time. He (along with Quentin Tarantino) helped make shooting segments out of sequence in many different ways a popular part of cinema today. Watch this movie, and you will want to change your profession to movie director. Franka Potente (Blow, Bourne Identity) delivers a stellar performance. The techno soundtrack was also a revolutionary addition that I approve of. Great movie!

I'd seen this movie several years ago and when I saw it in the $3.99 bin at Best Buy I figured I'd pick it up and watch it again. The English overdubbing is tough to watch, as it is not very close to the mouth movements, which was a distraction for me. Other than that, it was an okay film, not great, but for a short independent film, it was okay. I recommend with some reservations.

What would you do for your loved one???In this case, RUN LOLA RUN until you get it right. Sort of like the old saying, "If at first you don't succeed, try try again."Brilliant visuals, colorful cinematography, a driving film score, and a stunning performance by Franka Potente(and don't forget her best supporting role by her fire red hairdo). Can't wait to see what director Tom Tykwer has up his sleeve next.......

When I first saw this movie I was in college- I was a German minor and figured it would help with my Deutsch, I knew it was Oscar nominated, but I didn't expect to get hooked on the movie. I've owned the DVD before, but it's definitely better on blu ray. For this price I'm contemplating buying 10 copies to hand out to my friends!

Mila Jovovich is famous for The 5th Element and the Resident Evil movies. THis is the movie she should be famous for. Lola has to run... literally... across the city to save boyfriend... and herself. It is the choices she makes on the way that determine whether or not there will be a happy ending.
