In-ceiling surround sound speakers are speakers installed in the ceiling as part of a multichannel home theater system. Most have recessed housings and visible grilles that sit close to the ceiling surface. Their channel assignments depend on the home theater layout and AV receiver configuration.
Most in-ceiling speakers are passive, meaning they require amplification from an AV receiver or a separate amplifier. For a surround sound setup, the receiver or processor handles audio decoding and channel assignments. Powered models have different connection requirements, so check the speaker documentation.
Surround channels carry audio assigned to positions beside or behind the listener, while height channels carry overhead audio in compatible formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. In-ceiling speakers are commonly used for height channels. The channel role is determined by the system configuration, not simply by the speaker being mounted in the ceiling.
Most passive in-ceiling speakers connect with speaker wire to the corresponding terminals on an AV receiver or amplifier. Each speaker typically has its own wired connection. A receiver with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth does not automatically make its passive speaker connections wireless.
Many in-ceiling speakers have paintable grilles that can match the ceiling color, but this feature varies by model. Some also have paintable trim, while others use trimless designs. Check the manufacturer’s documentation to confirm which parts are paintable and the recommended painting method.
