Signs [DVD] [2002]

Disney's "Vista Series" DVDs were touted as the next big line of Special Edition discs, and titles such as Pearl Harbor and The Sixth Sense reflected that, so what's the deal with this release of Signs? Though certainly not a horrible disc, it falls short in many ways. The image, which is 1.85:1 and anamorphic, is good, but flawed. Grainy shimmering shows all to often, especially early in the film. Darks are solid though, with no sign of breakdown or blocking. Color, though relatively muted in the film, comes across pretty well. The 5.1 Dolby Digital EX track suffers also. For such a blockbuster, so much more would be expected. While dialogue is clear, nearly the entire track is focused up front, with little separation. Surrounds are only used sparingly at best and lack any real imagination. Where the disc really falters is the supplemental features. Not that what's offered isn't good, but for a Special Edition series, there just simply isn't much. The highlight is a very comprehensive 58-minute documentary on all aspects of making the film. Director M. Night Shyamalan extensively discusses everything from pre-production, to set design and visual effects, to the scoring of the film and it's world premiere. Interviews with composer James Newton Howard, producer Frank Marshall, and others flesh out the process of making this film. A real treat on this disc because it's so bad (and Shyamalan admits it himself in an introduction) is the inclusion of a minute from his first "creature" movie, Pictures, which he made as a teenager. It's simply awful, making it very funny. Rounding out this disc are five deleted scenes running about eight minutes and a storyboard-to-film comparison with angle function and multiple audio options. Again, what is offered for extras is good, they just don't reach far enough.

    Synopsis

    Signs
Following the smash hit The Sixth Sense (1999) and the under-performing follow-up Unbreakable (2000), directing phenom M. Night Shyamalan returns to the summer box office landscape that served as the backdrop for his cinematic breakthrough. In Signs, another paranormal outing for the writer-director, Shyamalan explores the eerie implications of a 500-foot crop circle that mysteriously appears on the Bucks County, PA farm of reverend Graham Hess (Mel Gibson). As Hess and his family (Joaquin Phoenix, Rory Culkin, Abigail Breslin) try to take stock of what the sign means, and how its message incorporates into their faith, they start to get the feeling they are not alone in the fields behind their house. Shyamalan re-teams with producers Frank Marshall, Sam Mercer and Kathleen Kennedy, and produces the project in association with his Blinding Edge Pictures banner and Touchstone Pictures. ~ Derek Armstrong, Rovi

Signs is a great sci-fi and suspense classic. When I first watched this film, I honestly did not expect the ending I got. Definitely not in a bad way though. Signs is the story of a father (Mel Gibson) who is trying to raise his family without his wife. After her death, his brother moved in to help out on the farm and with raising the kids. Life changes for him one morning when he wakes to the sounds of his daughters screams. Him and his brother run outside to discover giant crop circles in their corn. Was it the work of nearby teenage boys, or something more? Signs will make you laugh, cry, and realize what it is all about when it all comes together in the end.

As with most M. Night Shyamalan films, you love it or dispise it, you're either a fan of his or you're not. Most people that diss his films just don't understand him or his movies. My wife and I are huge fans, we have all of his films. This is a great movie with two storylines that come together at the end, geniusly written with a great cast. If you're not a fan of his or don't understand his movies, then don't bother. But, if you're a fan, as we are, then I highly recommend this movie. It's right up there with Unbreakable and Sixth Sense. Also, some of his more recently underappreciated movies are Lady in the Water and The Happening. Only if you're a fan, will you appreciate these movies!

      It Could Happen!

I prefer scary movies that are more realistic and that could actually happen over just blood and gore slasher films. But movies like this actually scare me more than those that are more overtly scary because it could actually happen! I also like that this movie makes you think about things like faith and your beliefs. A must-see, especially if you're a fan of M. Night Shyamalan.

Good to come across this blu-ray and for excellent price point when I got it. Maybe a bit of a "forgotten" movie given all the plethora of movies over the years, but smartly done I say, well worth watching, a different kind of "alien" movie. It's like it could happen in your backyard, and weird how the movie "feels" way creepier and intense than it "looks".

Their world comes to a standstill with the death of a wife and mother. A Godly man who is full a hattried to his God for allowing such a thing to happen. A brothter who gives up a career to help out where ever he can. Two kids who have all the answers to protect themselves from hostile invaders.

      M. Night Shyamalan made a definite hit with The Sixth Sense (intriguing storyline and excellent acting). Unbreakable was not as much of a success suffering from a rather hasty ending. However, Signs hits rock bottom. Almost every scene is snatched directly from another film (Dawn of the Dead comes to mind for several scenes), and the script is horribly written. It makes no sense that an alien cannot escape a closet. Come on!

I think that this is a great movie. It shows that a family eventhough they were struggling come together to defeat a common enemy. I though it was cool Graham Hess had lost his faith and regained it by the end of the movie. I thought that this movie was thoughly entertaining and kept me on the edge of my seat. This movie is a great movie to see.

Being that the movie took place in Pennsylvania not far from where I live, it made this movie even better. Most of this directors movies take place in Pennsylvania which I like. Aside from that the movie is a different take on a movie about extraterrestrials. It's one of my favorite movies and I would recommend it.
