Q: Is the piece that locks it in you ear removable or permanently attached?
A: It is not removable though you can cut or snip the piece off if it bothers you. My 6-month old Rottweiler did the honors to my daughter's set but also ate the small in-ear speaker as well, so I would advise using very sharp scissors or a small knife instead of deploying a puppy. (Yes, we bought her another pair [the daughter, not the puppy].)

Q: Does the design really allow for ambient sound to come in?
A: Yes, you can hear ambient sound, but would not recommend if you NEED to hear ambient. The ear buds do block out a significant amount of ambient, particularly the higher pitched tones.
A: The cord is a little over 17" long. Yes there is slack i wear mine on the front of my neck not behind, you can wear it behind but for me it's not as comfortable. Hope this helps!
Q: How would these be around loud machinery?
A: With them at full volume not only would you not hear anything around you, but you would probably lose some of your hearing....bottom line they rock! P.S. dont dangle them around your neck while walking or running unless you have a small neck width, the length from bud to bud is very short and has led them to slip off of my back at times without even me noticing. Luckily they have never hit the ground ☺
